My opinions after playing the Wrath of the Druids dlc via Early Access, No Story Spoilers

    Posted: 12 May 2021 02:38 PM PDT

Thanks to the Mentors Guild, I was given early access to play the Wrath of the Druids dlc. I played on a PS4, and have fully completed it. I will not be discussing any story spoilers, so please do not worry.

Overall, it took me about 22-25 hours to complete the main story, fully explore the map, complete all the raids, loot all the treasures (including all the shiny dots on the map), complete all the trade requests, eliminate all the targets, and do all the side activities. I had a good time with the dlc, it plays very much how main game AC Valhalla plays. I was kept entertained the whole time.

The world is beautiful. As usual, Ubisoft knows how to present the worlds the games are set in. Some of my favorite areas were the very atmospheric druidic locations. There's a lot of mist and fog, and with peeks of sunlight, often feels very mysterious. The city of Dublin is big, but not too big, and is the only city in the dlc. All of the things you could find in your settlement back home - a blacksmith, tattoo shop, store merchant, and a place to read letters - are all found in Dublin. Some of the areas did feel a little too same-y with the main game, like some of the abbeys or forts, but there weren't too many of them to feel too repetitive. In some of the locations you will have to sound the raid horn to get a crew member to help you open up the big gold chests. Again, not a big deal, but sometimes it seemed silly when there was just one gold chest and I needed just one crew member to help me open it. And finally, be on the lookout for rainbows! They can be quite fleeting at times, but make for some really beautiful pics.

Some other side activities, like cairns, altars, drinking, and cursed spots make a return appearance in the dlc. The cairns are a lot easier for those who just groaned (I heard that!) about seeing more cairns. There are no world events, which is a bit of a shame, as I liked those little short quests in the main game. And be on the lookout for Irish fireflies. I did see 2 of them, but didn't manage to catch them. There is a spot to release them as well.

In Dublin, we're introduced to the new trade economy system, which is fun and pretty easy to do. Throughout the map, we can take over trade posts, build the requested buildings and help double the amount of resources earned. These resources are "sent" to our stash box in Dublin, which we have to remember to claim every once in a while, like the money chests in AC2 and AC Unity. There is a merchant in Dublin that has requests for these resources. The more you give them, the more rewards we can get, like armor and silver, and also the greater the renown of Dublin grows. Resources can be found all over the map, so there's next to no grind to participate in this trade economy. If you're thorough in your looting, you'll find it's very easy to participate in the trade economy. There are also pigeon coops to do Royal Demands, where we are rewarded with resources. And there are optional objectives tied to the Royal Demands, where you can earn some extra resources for completing the objectives. I did find the optional objectives a bit cumbersome. The stealth in the game is still not the best, so going into a camp and not being detected is too much of a bother when we're getting instantly detected. I appreciate the return of pigeon coops as a throwback to the earlier days of AC.

There are a few new abilities we can find by collecting the Books of Knowledge. I'm honestly very set in my ways and happy with the abilities I used in the main game, I haven't explored how the new abilities work. Speaking with others, the Smoke Arrows ability seems to be pretty well received. Feel free to play around with it.

The dlc very much feels like another "adventure with Eivor." I feel if you liked how the various arcs played out in the main game, you'll like the dlc. It has an interesting story, feels true to the setting. There is no advancement of the Modern Day story, nor is there any Assassins vs Templars story. The music is wonderful, though I feel it was underused at times. I encountered one crash, and a handful of bugs. In one boss fight, I had to die on purpose, as I experienced a glitch where the boss was taking no damage. Not a big deal, just something I noticed. Once I reloaded back into the game, it worked fine.

I thank Ubisoft and the Mentors Guild for allowing me to play early. In general, I enjoyed my time with the Wrath of the Druids dlc. I do wish it felt more "assassiny" but maybe the next dlc will allow me to feel that way.

    Critic Reviews

    Atomix - Sebastian Quiroz - Spanish - 80 / 100

Wrath of the Druids is a DLC that is responsible for delivering an entertaining story with a couple of changes to the formula seen in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

    Attack of the Fanboy - Brandon Adams - 4 / 5 stars

If you are still enjoying Valhalla then Wrath of the Druids is worth a gander. Hopefully the Siege of Paris expansion breaks the mold a little, but for now this first expansion acts as a serviceable excuse to revisit Assassin's Creed Valhalla, if nothing more than to tour about 9th century Ireland.

    AusGamers - Steve Farrelly - 7.8 / 10

Ireland may be a neighbouring stomping ground to England, but that doesn't mean they're like for like in the biome department.

    But Why Tho? - Jason Flatt - 8.5 / 10

"Wrath of the Druids" is an excellent DLC. It does everything right in setting the new locale apart from its neighbor to the east while delivering a strong new plot and set of characters. Not every new mechanic feels fully realized, but for what they do offer, I enjoyed them and particularly enjoyed the way they played into the greater mythos and context of the game as a whole. If the remainder of Assassin's Creed Valhall's major DLC—and future Assassin's Creed stories, for that matter—follow suit, I'll be very glad for it.

    Critical Hit - Darryn Bonthuys - 8.5 / 10

Ireland is beautiful beyond words, the hidden secrets make exploring the Emerald Isle more fascinating than the paint by numbers main campaign, and if you're looking for plenty of familiar bang for your Hiberno-Norse coinage, Wrath of the Druids certainly has all that and more.

    Destructoid - Chris Carter - 6.5 / 10

Wrath of the Druids is simply more Assassin's Creed Valhalla, with a few added twists and some of the same baggage. The benefit of not swinging for the fences is that you're getting more AC comfort food, even if it falls far short of a home run. For 25 bucks, you might need something a little more than that.

Eurogamer - Tom Phillips - No Recommendation / Blank

Wrath of the Druids is a meaty expansion which succeeds in taking Valhalla to new shores, even if the path sometimes feels familiar.

    Game Revolution - Michael Leri - 7 / 10

Wrath of the Druids has a lot of the same shortcomings as the main game. The story is too concerned with political intrigue that isn't that intriguing, the landscape is mostly barren greenery that's unexciting to traverse, and the overall game hardly hovers above the average baseline it rests upon, just to name a few of the overlapping problems. But Wrath of the Druids does leapfrog the base experience because of its relative focus that organically slices off the astounding amount of bloat inherent to a game that large. It doesn't magically make Assassin's Creed Valhalla a better game, but it does show that sometimes, a smaller serving can make a huge difference.

    GameSpot - Jordan Ramée - 5 / 10

Wrath of the Druids is Assassin's Creed Valhalla's first major post-launch DLC, though its story unfortunately doesn't tie back to the main game very well.

    Gameblog - Thomas Pillon - French - 5 / 10

Despite the prospect of discovering the green lands of Ireland, it's hard to get excited after a dozen hours spent on The Wrath of the Druids: this first expansion of Assassin's Creed Valhalla is content despite a handful of novelties to recycle the formula of the main adventure, which may quickly tire those who have already completed it. While waiting for the Siege of Paris, which we hope will be much more inspired, we will advise the conquerors to go quietly to their business, waiting for better, less misty days.

    Gamers Heroes - Blaine Smith - 90 / 100

Wrath of the Druids is near perfect in its execution, a flawless combination of challenge and accessibility that paves the way for a glorious adventure into the darker side of Irish mythology and legend. Everything has been carefully packaged with incredible visuals, worthwhile new endeavors, and a cast of characters just as memorable as the original game.

    GamingTrend - David Flynn - 75 / 100

Wrath of the Druids is simply more Assassin's Creed Valhalla, both for good and ill. For a paid expansion, it doesn't add much new or interesting and the main quest doesn't have much to deal with Druids. Still, more Valhalla is more Valhalla and it's enjoyable for what it is.

    Generación Xbox - Juan Lorente - Spanish - 9.2 / 10

‎It is true that there will be some players who may consider it continuing or who do not add enough content and novelties to justify their purchase, especially with some mechanics that may become repetitive or somewhat generic locations, but I assure you that that feeling will not last you if you give it a try. For me, ‎‎the Wrath of the Druids is a very good expansion that any lover of the saga and Valhalla should not miss.‎

    God is a Geek - Mick Fraser - 9 / 10

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Wrath of the Druids presents a good 12 to 18 hours of new story and side content, with loads to get stuck into.

    Hardcore Gamer - Chris Shive - 4 / 5

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Wrath of the Druids offers a sizeable amount of new content to an already huge game.

    Hobby Consolas - Daniel Quesada - Spanish - 66 / 100

It repeats the typical mistake of other DLCs from the franchise (repeating the mechanics of the main game with a coat of paint), but its simple, focused story is well developed.

    IGN Italy - Davide Mancini - Italian - 7.8 / 10

Wrath of the Druids is a solid expansion for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, surprisingly huge and well structured, but at the time quite self indulgent in terms of storytelling and a little bit unpolished. It brings an interesting variant gameplay loop and offers 15 hours of contents, so it's perfect for die hard fans of the main campaign.

    PCGamesN - Richard Scott-Jones - 8 / 10

A hefty expansion that offers up to 20 more hours of what Valhalla does so brilliantly, slightly marred by some half-baked side quests.

    PlayStation Universe - Simon Sayers - 8 / 10

Wrath of the Druids does exactly what you'd expect: more of Valhalla's gameplay with a new story arc. With a large amount of extra content for players, and a whole new region to explore that feels distinctly different from England, this expansion is a solid one for new and returning players. Just don't expect any major new gameplay changes or features.

    Press Start - James Berich - 8.5 / 10

All in all, Wrath of the Druids is a great addition to Valhalla's already well-bolstered package. Visiting Ireland, learning about its rich history and mythology is something I'd never thought that I would be interested in. But Wrath of the Druids is so engaging that it's hard not to recommend to people who enjoyed Valhalla. Just don't expect it to reinvent the wheel, but instead, bring a few more.

    Push Square - Robert Ramsey - 8 / 10

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Wrath of the Druids is one of the series' best expansions. In its beautiful but sombre open world depiction of Ireland, it provides an intriguing story that combines history and folklore to great effect. A range of new weapons and armour sets help sweeten the deal, while more engaging combat scenarios keep you on your toes. If you're already a fan of Valhalla, this Emerald Isle adventure is very hard to fault.

    SomosXbox - Daniel Villagrasa - Spanish - 7.5 / 10

‎Assassin's Creed Valhalla: The Wrath of the Druids is a remarkable expansion of Assassin's Creed Valhalla that nourishes the game with new content with its own history and that despite not adding anything to the main game leads us to an interesting and personality adventure, in a place of the most captivating.‎

Spaziogames - Paolo Sirio - Italian - Unscored

The initial DLC of the season pass follows in the footsteps both in terms of narration, something we would have avoided, and gameplay, of which it inherits strengths and weaknesses, and to which just a couple of additions have been made to embellish a playful picture already discreetly innovated by the basic game.

    TechRaptor - Nirav Gandhi - 8 / 10

I loved Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and so I loved my time with Wrath of the Druids. But after a 55 hour base game, a change of pace would have been very welcome.

Vamers - Edward Swardt - Recommended

As an expansion, Wrath of the Druids is extremely good. It adds so much wonderful content to Assassin's Creed Valhalla that it makes it extremely easy to overlook the few small oddities it brings along. The story is, without a doubt, the strongest facet of Wrath of the Druids. While it may feel a bit short (coming in at around fifteen hours), it does take Evior across the majority of Ireland by means of an engrossing story arc. It also lets players soak up all of the lusciousness of the green and rainy Irish countryside, and hosts a vast number of beautiful vistas to enjoy and get lost in. Lastly, The Children of Danu are a cool new faction adding much-needed flavour to a world previously dominated by the usual bandit or Dane infested roads of England – the new gear is pretty awesome to collect too. Wrath of the Druids feels like Ubisoft tried to one-up Fate of Atlantis, while simultaneously keeping unnecessary waffling in the narrative to a minimum – thus enhancing everything else the expansion has to offer. It is an absolute must-play for all gamers who enjoy Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

    Wccftech - Francesco De Meo - 8 / 10

Assassin's Creed Valhalla - Wrath of the Druids is a more than worthy expansion to the latest entry in the series, featuring a new beautiful map to explore, an engaging story, charming characters, new abilities, and plenty of other new content in the form of new gear, abilities and cosmetics. The new mechanics don't fundamentally change how the game plays, so those who didn't like Assassin's Creed Valhalla to begin with will not change their mind with the expansion. Everyone else, however, will love every second of their time in Ireland as they did with their time in Norway and England.

    Windows Central - Jennifer Locke - 3.5 / 5 stars

Wrath of the Druids is very much an expansion to Valhalla, for better or worse. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, but there are over a dozen hours of content in Ireland to experience. If you're looking for more of the same from the base game, this is it.

    Worth Playing - Andreas Salmen - 6.8 / 10

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Wrath of the Druids is a solid stand-alone story experience that takes place during Valhalla's storyline. While boasting a decent story, it never breaks the mold of the established formula, feeling more like "yet another kingmaker story" rather than an adventure that lives up to the potential of the setting. It has a few new ideas and spins a few old mechanics into a new form, but at the end of the day, it plays it way too safe, which causes it to feel uninspired. If you loved Valhalla, this DLC will give you more of that, but if you're already fatigued by its repetitive gameplay, Wrath of the Druids won't change that.

    Screen Rant - Rob Gordon - 3 / 5 stars

This leaves Wrath of the Druids as a decent if uninspired first major DLC pack for Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Its truly brilliant moments are worth playing, and those who enjoyed the core gameplay loop of the main game will be satisfied. However, elements like resource gathering and generic side quests could certainly have been cut to make way for more divergent design, to make use of Ireland and all its history.

Tom's guide - Marshall Honorof - No score

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Wrath of the Druids is an easygoing expansion with nothing to prove. It has basically all the same strengths and weaknesses as Assassin's Creed Valhalla, with just one substantial addition. I can't imagine that series fans will be talking about this one for years to come, but I also can't imagine that they'll walk away disappointed.

    Game Rant - Joshua Duckworth - 3 / 5 stars

Overall, Wrath of the Druids is not a bad addition to Assassin's Creed Valhalla. It's even a good one for those who want any reason to step in Eivor's shoes again. But for those who have turned their attention elsewhere, it doesn't do much to bring them back.

    PC Invasion - Jason Rodriguez - 8.0 / 10

Though there are a few minor issues, Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Wrath of the Druids gives you a lot of reasons to continue Eivor's journey thanks to a lush and vibrant land to explore. Fighting the druidic cult is also a treat owing to their usage of wild animals, poisons, and flames. The additional activities you can do, such as building your trading posts and finding collectibles, add more hours to the experience.

    Gamereactor UK - Ben Lyons - 9.0 / 10

Wrath of the Druids is a similar take on Assassin's Creed Valhalla that is bolstered with some exciting new activities and content. With the base game being as incredible as it is, an expansion that delivers more of what we come to love, except with a Celtic twist makes for a very enjoyable experience. Even though this DLC is much smaller than Valhalla, the more concise map keeps it from feeling bloated, and creates a miniature adventure that is much easier to digest.

Access the Animus - Sorrosyss - No score

All in all, it is a solid and enjoyable experience for an expansion, but its own self-containment also means that fans can quite easily bypass this content with no real impact to their main Eivor story. If you have always wanted to experience Ireland as a setting though, picking this up should be a no brainer for you.

The reviews for Wrath of the Druids are threatening me with a good time

    Posted: 12 May 2021 06:25 PM PDT

I realize that my opinion may be in the minority in this community, which is fine, but most of the things being labeled as negative in the reviews for WotD, I actually find to be positive.

"There's no modern day content, no Assassin vs Templar story, and no Isu storyline."

To me that's absolutely beautiful. I've never played AC for any of that, I'm just a fan of history that enjoys the worldbuilding and characters above all else, and would be perfectly happy if Ubisoft dropped all that and just released a bunch of standalone historical RPGs. Frankly, I think they should have done that after ACIII. I love the thought of just having a simple Viking adventure in Ireland with some political intrigue and elements of Celtic mythology thrown in, without all of that extra crap being shoehorned in. If the reviews are accurate, this will be a buy from me.

Can we have multiple games with one protagonist?

    Posted: 12 May 2021 11:33 AM PDT

Every AC game over the last couple of years has had a new protagonist and the story features their journey along with DLC expanding on that story. I wanted to find out if you guys would like the idea of 2-3 games with a single protagonists which show different chapters of their life, similar to the Ezio trilogy?

Personally I would love to see a sequel of Odyssey and play through Kassandras other life journeys due to the possibilities being endless as she lived for 2000+ years. It could be in Greece again at a more recent time and have a lot more opportunity for parkour or it could be somewhere completely different as she has to have travelled in that 2000 years.

This is just one example and a sequel to Origins/Valhalla or even an AC before the RPG trilogy could be good too.

Female Eivor speech sounds almost like a song or spinning a tale and I love it!

    Posted: 12 May 2021 04:45 AM PDT

I've recently started playing this game and I can't get enough of the female Eivor voice!

Her speech sounds almost like a song or like she's permanently flyting and she's so emotionally expressive, almost like there's a restrained rage behind every word, but then at times she sounds really kind and protective, the actress displays such a wide range of emotions. And throughout all of it, she still manages to sound like an honorable warrior and not just a brute. I find myself looking forward to literally every dialogue in the game!

Truly outstanding work! Ubisoft's Eivor and Cyberpunk 2077's V are real standout protagonist performances in recent times and I love it! Well done Ubi!

I'm just finishing up a few raids and side quests for the DLC release tomorrow, and I realize there are insanely few realistic weapons. Every weapon is so fantasticle now and I really miss realistic weapons. Today I have only seen one realistic weapon and that is the axe Eivor brings out of nowhere during some finishers. I want more of those, axes that doesn't 100kg and are made of 85% gold.

Personally i would rather see next assassins creed game take place in African country considering we have already seen so many games take place in European settings. From Africa i mean like southern part of African continent. One setting i would suggest would be the great Zimbabwe empire.

To anyone who was planning on downloading the Wrath of the Druids DLC early through Xbox, just now that the Microsoft Store won’t let you download it for free if you have the season pass

    Posted: 12 May 2021 05:40 AM PDT

UPDATE: To anyone that comes across this post, I have been made aware that this is an issue on Xbox's side. Please if you can spread the message, we need to get this fixed!

Edit: To anyone who comes across this post and you live in an area where the DLC is available and you are having this situation, report it to wherever you can. Because if this is a bug it has to fixed relatively fast and if it isn't a bug on the side of the storefront then we have a serious problem here.

For those of you who don't know, for a while now we've been able to play the DLC one day early if you change the systems location to New Zealand. This was great, especially if you had the season pass. Well, for some reason you can't download Wrath of the Druids for free if you have the season pass. The DLC is available on the store if you look for it, but you have to pay 40 DOLLARS for it! The dlc also doesn't appear on the My Games and Apps section on Xbox so unless you're willing to buy and then refund the DLC, there's no way to play it for free, and it fucking sucks.

AC must delve into bold historical events and political events of past

    Posted: 12 May 2021 12:17 PM PDT

I have read lot of posts in this sub about how AC should go back to old combat styles, map styles and focus more on stuff that made the series great.
I have no preference one way or another w.r.t combat style i.e. old way vs new way. I like both new games and old games alike for different reasons. I loved Odyssey, perhaps more than Syndicate or Unity for some reason. I loved Unity and wondered why it got the flak. My only "slight" beef with Unity isn't bugs or story or combat - I loved combat and assassinations - in fact my gripe was the "map filling icons" as soon as you open it. I preferred less of that and more of "organic" discovery of quests and events around the world - AC Origins style if you will.

Still, AC Unity was a better game than Valhalla IMHO. Odyssey and Origins are much needed "breaks" from old formula, but Valhalla felt like - neither here nor there.

For someone who loved Odyssey, I wondered why I didn't like Valhalla as much, "Is it big open world with huge empty spaces with nothing interesting to do?" - Perhaps, but I realize now after watching the "Wrath of Druids" trailer is that Ubisoft departed and/or shying away from "big political stories or historical narratives" of the past. Valhalla felt "safe" and too safe from the story POV. No controversial historical characters or events or interesting political threads to talk about.

What made AC games interesting story wise was weaving the "story" around the huge historical events (and political ramifications of the past) and making it much more interesting. AC Valhalla ultimately failed in that. Sure, we get to meet local rulers, make allies, enemies, but ultimately these aren't as interesting as huge historical events like burning of Library of Alexandria OR the Peloponnesian war or of course - the French Revolution.

When I was playing Unity, where events are around the French revolution, it felt like I was there and the story is life like - bigger than life like story as they say. Origins and Odyssey evoked same feeling. Valhalla on the other hand felt flat w.r.t historical narrative because we all know that these local dukes and rulers are not as interesting (at least to me) or perhaps Ubisoft picked one of the boring time periods.

May be Valhalla was/is interesting to people in UK and around, but to me, it wasn't. This is someone who liked AC Syndicate.

Remember Ezio killing Pope, that's the bold historical (and political) story weaving that Ubisoft should get back to in my opinion. Remember the Bastille fortress, that's the bold events I want to experience. Remember meeting Leonidas or Socrates - these are great historical characters.

We can all discuss different combat, assassinations and region settings - but I feel weaving story around interesting historical events and bold political narratives is the heart of AC to me.

I hope next AC games boldly goes to those big historical events and controversial historical characters, narratives.

Am I wrong? Did I miss any big historical stuff in Valhalla? Or is it just me that felt that way about Valhalla's story?

Read a GameRant article that came up with the American Civil War as an interesting historical time period. What would you guys think about that?

I bring this up because I found it VERY intriguing that the writer came up with Abraham Lincoln as a Templar. If the idea ever became a reality it would be very interesting to find out what the story would be like, as the Assassins would almost have to be Confederates for Lincoln's assassination to tie in to the story. Heads would surely roll given our current climate, but the daring nature of the potential story makes the idea enticing.

What are your 3 favourite AC games and why?

    Posted: 12 May 2021 11:36 PM PDT

    My list:
    1. AC II: I love Ezio's story in this game and how he develops throughout the story. This game always makes me feel a certain way when exploring that no other AC game has made me feel. The Cities of Venice and Florence are great.
    2. AC Unity: The story may have peaked at the Bastille, but it stays quite solid throughout. Arno is one of my favourite -if not my favourite- Assassin in the series, I love how he's doesn't have much faith in the creed in the beginning but works towards that trust throughout the story. I always feel sad for him knowing he doesn't have a happy ending and that he basically lost everyone and everything. Paris is a joy to roam around in and the parkour, combat and stealth are stunning. The variety in how you can approach missions really are great. Overall a very enjoyable game.

    1. AC Black Flag/Origins: I know I said 3 games but I honestly can't decide between these two. Both have fantastic protaginists, fantastic settings and left a very large, lasting impression on me. Honestly I love both these games very much. I feel like Black Flag would've been better but it has so many goddamn bugs that screwed me over in missions.

I'd love to hear the rest of the community's opinions
