[SPOILER] I seriously appreciate how much humor there is in Valhalla

There's always some funny things (no one forgets the first time you heard "Its-a me, Mario!"), but I've really enjoyed how much fun stuff is there just to be funny. Chasing chickens while drunk, the fact that no one can understand anything Bridgid says, the flyting competition where you wind up just babbling and still win, the guy who provides fertility "services," the nudists, funny notes people had; I just really got a kick out of how much little funny moments they included.

Game setting Idea: Asassins Creed - Thailand

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:47 AM PST

After doing some reading on the country's history, I can't stop from thinking how cool an Assassins Creed game set in Thailand would be. Imagine running through lush jungles, exploring Buddhist temples, fighting tigers, boating down crowded river markets, and riding freaking elephants, it'd be so different from other games in the series. So far I have two different time-periods I think would make for good plots.

    • 1670's/80's - under the rule of King Narai, the Templar grandmaster Constantine Phaulkon has rosen to incredible power in the kingdom of Ayutthaya, and opened it up to foreign influence, hoping to convert the king to Christianity and establish Templar Dominance. I picked this period because some historians feel the revolution at the end of Narai's reign and the following purge of French influence put the final nail in the coffin of Thai colonialism

    • Late 1700's - following the reign of King Taksin who rose from humble beginnings to becoming a war hero that helped unite the country and drive out Burmese invaders, but by the end of his reign had fallen into madness, believing he was a reincarnated god (sage memories?). This left the kingdom in a dreadful state of lawlessness and corruption. This would end in a revolution that results in the establishment of the Chakri dynasty (who still reign today) and a period of progress for the nation.

I see this game being similar in mechanics to Valhalla but with a combat system that encourages hand to hand combat, because the game wouldn't be complete without some incredible Muay Thai fighting. What are you guy's thoughts? I've seen a lot of people saying they want to see Asia repped in an AC game and just thought this would be a perfect fit.

[Spoilers] Assassin's Creed Valhalla Mission, Legendary Weapons, and Romance Guide

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:05 PM PST

Here is a full list of missions and arcs in Assassin's Creed Valhalla with their recommended levels and in the recommended play order to act as a guide if you don't know what to do next. This is not a walkthrough, which many other sites have easily available.Tracked missions are all main story and world events have replaced side missions. For questions on any mysteries, wealth (armor, weapons, and upgrade materials), or artifacts, please click on their links. We highly recommend completing the Mythical Arcs first, then the Hidden Truth (locations here), and then beat the game. Notes will be included only for MAJOR CHOICES, and at the end I'll describe how to get the legendary weapons. Obviously, beware of spoilers, though I will spoiler tag what I can.

Sigurd Strikes are decisions made during missions that will result in the "bad ending". 3-4 Sigurd strikes will give you the "bad ending", but can be reversed. The 5th Sigurd strike will always give the "bad ending".

Most of the game will only let you have one person Romanced, and breaking up with a Romance Option is permanent. A full list of Romances will be at the bottom.

    There are:

    • 21 Arcs containing
      • 138 Main Missions
      • 26 Missions without direct arcs attached
    • 2 DLC with
      • 2 DLC Arcs
      • 6 DLC Missions.
    • For a total of 170 missions

"Aha" moment about Valhalla's tease in Odyssey

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 10:42 PM PST

I just realized that Valhalla's location was teased in Odyssey. At the highest point in Odyssey's map, there lies a sword in a stone (Excalibur). This was a teaser that the next entry would take place in Dark Ages England and none of us knew it. I wonder what secret teaser is lying around in Valhalla's map and when we'll find it?

Assassin's creed games should have more realistic looking weapons

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:20 AM PST

Ever since Origins released I started to notice how big and clumsy the weapons in AC are.

Basic swords are big enough to be 2-handed swords. 2-handed swords look like they come straight out of Final Fantasy. Axes in Valhalla are massive, they look incredibly heavy and more like a toy you buy in the local shop than a proper weapon. Bows look like the come straight out of a fantasy game. And hilts of blades are as big as the actual sword/knife itself. Speaking of knives, they are huge in Valhalla.

I don't recall this always being like that. I have to admit that I'm a bit the history geek when it comes to that.

I heard that it was easier for the devs to make like this, but when you look at Ghost of Tsushima the weapons are generally regular sized and look amazing.

I have no issue whatsoever with a fantasy weapon in the game now and again. Or a weapon that looks a bit out of the order and bigger. I get that. But In Valhalla it comes so far that the only weapon that looks even remotely historical is the lvl1 raider axe.

Thoughts on this? Should AC remain with the big weaps or should they tune it down a little bit? If so and we get enough replies on this maybe Ubi will change things up next time.

Codex Transferendum: The English-to-Isu & Isu-to-English dictionary & language guide (plus a free Isu font!)

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:41 PM PST

Just as a previous voice once gathered the necessary talent, and a previous mother once compiled their designs, I now present you with mine: Codex Transferendum is now a full-fledged Isu language guide, from writing, to translating, to now even speaking every single bit of Isu text we see in Valhalla!

With a ton of credit due to the gang at Access the Animus and the diligence of u/bool0011 in the vocalizations for each character in particular, I've aimed to create a central resource for everything you'd ever need to know about the Isu language. (At least...till the DLC's come out...)

For those that saw my previous post, don't shy away, there's a ton of new content here! For those new to the Isu language, you're in for a much easier time than those who translated before!

    • My handwritten Isu Devanagari font is still free in newly-updated Window and Apple flavors, and is now in "alphabetical" order with 45 keystrokes - not following the sounds, but allowing for easy typing of your own Isu language study should you so desire.
    • The previous font is null, after finding an assumed character we never actually see. Instead, it still uses the keystrokes for a-v, A-V, and # for •, with the true sounds of each character now also accounted for in the font key of the Codex.
    • The dictionary's been doubled in size! I've now alphabetized the Isu words in an Isu-to-English section, which shed a little more light on a couple mistranslated words from the AtA videos! (ex: "Compile" and "Gather" naturally share the same characters, but AtA mistranslated the verb "Present" for "Compile", and I was able to unlock a word AtA never circled back to on my own! "The" conjugated as a title with an "of" suffix for "The Council"!)
    • Because of this new alphabetized Isu word list, I've been able to notice that 4 untranslated characters are strictly used to only represent hex#'s (hex2, hex7, 72...interesting hexC, and hexE), and as such should have a sound to them but I've left them as "hex#" in the character map. (They're likely an accented vowel based on similar characters that are translated)
    • "b", "p", and "ou/ow" are three of the newest character translations found by u/bool0011, and they have been added, however in spoken context I stick to "ou" (funnily enough, a lot of the words that use it sound eerily similar to their English counterparts! Ex: "Current" in Isu is "nou" like "new", and "You" is "æou")
    • The collector's edition word that AtA originally translated to "Family" has now been rediscovered to mean "Sword", and is reflected.
    • "Animals" and "Creatures" share the same characters, so I've eliminated "Creatures" as its own listing and added it to "Animals", same goes for "Gather" being added to "Compile" as stated above.
    • All Isu writings are now listed in 4 lines for each sentence: English translation, direct translation, Isu text, then what it sounds like in Isu. (Yes we can now speak nearly everything that's been written!!!)
    • After transcribing all of the text into their letters, I've found several "typos" in the AtA writings of the Canterbury file and in my own Isu writings that I've since fixed.
    • BIG CAVEAT: Certain translated characters, like "l m n r", have variants that in Isu are still written lmnr, but would sound like "ul um un ur" when spoken. I've included the u's in the spoken text just to help us nail down pronunciation, but know that if written as "subtitles" in-game the u's would be removed, unless represented by the 8 which is "u" by itself. This is reflected in the "alphabetizing" of Isu words. Hopefully that makes sense when you see it...let me know if it doesn't.

This all leaves just 2 characters untranslated, and 7 Isu words incomplete. Maybe my work can shed the necessary light on this? (My theory based on u/bool011's work is we're missing the "j" and "oi" sounds in Isu, I just don't know which could be which yet)

With all that I've come to understand in building this Codex, I also tried my hand at reverse-translating one of AC's most iconic lines into the Isu language at the back, let me know what you think?

I hope this guide not only gives the community a better understanding of the Isu language itself, but even more so of the sheer brilliance that came from Antoine Henry at Ubisoft Singapore. The breadth of the language he built here is astounding, and it's been an absolute joy sifting out each of the ingenious building-blocks he pieced together, while I've attempted to deconstruct them all here.

If you know of a word we could deconstruct further or if you think of one we could build, comment your logics below and let's discuss! Corrections are welcome as well!

I loved Valhalla, what about you?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:31 AM PST

So personally i love Valhalla. I got it at christmas and i've only completed about 2 arcs in England but it's already so good. I also think it's like a middle ground for both kinds of fans. It brought back features like assassinations and, well the Assassins. But it's also similar enough to origins and odyssey (in the rpg/gameplay way) to be loved from the new fans. What did anyone else think?

Enemies over 9 feet tall in Origins in Valhalla look extremely stupid and break immersion

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:41 AM PST

Overall Assassin's Creed Orgins was a decent game. One small but silly feature however that a lot of people seemed to ignored is how unrealistically tall some of the brute guards are. Comparing their height to Bayek they look over 9 feet tall. Not only is this extremely unrealistic (the tallest person of all time was 8 feet and 11 inches, and people who grow to such heights needed walking sticks and certainly couldn't fight with melee weapons without falling over) it also breaks the immersion, it feels this is some epic fantasy game with giants opposed to a grounded history based game which is supposed to be historically accurate.

Odyssey fixed this issue, the brute guards there are tall but not stupidly tall, but in Valhalla we have ridiculously tall guards again. The Goliath enemies are also stupidly fat looking as well.

I have no problem whatsoever with taller brute enemy types, however they should be at a realistically tall height for an Assassin's Creed franchise that prides itself in historical accuracy and is supposed to be more grounded than fantasy.

Why is cold water different between Norway and Northumbria?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:24 PM PST

In Norway, Eivor gets all icy when she is in water. Northumbria is similarly snowy, but Northumbrian water doesn't do anything to her. Why is this?

Water at similar latitudes hurt Shay in Rogue.

A small pet peeve that drives me crazy

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:48 AM PST

So many times in Valhalla, you can see NPCs in groups dancing and acting like there's a party going on ... with absolutely no ambient sound or music.

Imagine seeing someone dancing like that IRL.

    It breaks immersion so much.

Sound design is really lacking in the game in general...

Just beat Valhalla (I think) and I have some questions. MAJOR SPOILERS

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:33 AM PST

Okay, so... does the game not have an ending? I allied with every region, went to Vinland, killed every member of the Order until Aelfred, I did all the stupid Asgard stuff, I even went to the secret room Aelfred gave me the key to.

Is that it? I assumed Basim would DO something in the present. In fact, I'm not sure why both Rebecca AND Shaun went to personally get William Miles, instead of just... calling him and asking him to come in person.

But no, the game just sort of... stops after you have the conversation with Aelfred? Is that really it? I feel like I'm missing something!

Why is AC: Odyssey an awesome game [Spoilers]

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST

As a person who played various game throughout multiple years, I rank AC Odyssey as one of my favorite. I will start by listing my favorite parts and procced to staff redditors are not happy about. I played Kassandra so from now on I am going to refer to main character as K.

    Good parts of the Odyssey

Map is very similar to AC Origins map which is simple enough but at the same time have all the information you need for an enjoyable playthrough. I was completely satisfied with this map.

Quest system was clear, most of the quest were interesting even thought after some time, some of then started to ger repeatable. But these not interesting quests where mainly connected to clearing bandit camps and another points of interests.

    K. main quest is to find her mother, but I see this more as an excuse. I think K. wanted so explore Greece and find her place in this world. I took the main story as a backround and expolered interesting side stories of Greece. The main quest is done qualitatively and it takes you thoughtout the most of the Greece. (as it should looking, at you AC:Valhalla).

Deimos and Order of Cosmos were good opponents for K. Every time Deimos showed up, I tensed and waited for what happens next. Despite that the story ends suddenly and it is quite lame, all the other quests and storyline balances it out.

Armors are superior to AC Origins with its variety, perks and styles. Complete sets and Special weapons have good special abilities which made my gameplay more enjoyable. Upgrading my gear to my current XP level was not that hard and I welcomed option for choosing an additional Engravings.

Combat is good and it is better than in Origins and a way better then in Valhalla. But Abilities are the real specialty of this game. Making combos and calculating when to use what ability, was one of my reason why I love this game.

DLCs are the real reason I am writing this article. They made me love this game. The Fate of Atlantis was and amazing mythological story with cool locations, character and quests. I enjoy every second of it.

I like the modern-day meeting between K. and Layla and I hope we will see K. in the future games.

Most of the discussed Negatives from Reddit and YT community

    1. (Copy of Origins) They copied some features but that it. For many people it can seem similar because Greek and Egypt cultures can be look similar.
    2. (Lame story) The main story wasn't the best but, in my mind, all the other things do balance it out.
    3. (Map too big) Map is big that true, but nobody is forcing you to explore everything.
    4. (Modern day) Yes, the modern day is different, but it is a fine way to tie it to Origins ending and at the same time it was a good set up for Valhalla. I enjoyed interactions with ISU and seeing some what their culture.
    5. (not an Assassin) Lack of social stealth wasn't any disappointment to me. There is enough of stealth if you want it. The real reason why people are angry about it, is that I doesn't play any role in the main story.
    6. (RPG aspect) I think people were expecting more of a regular RPG then Ubisoft intended.

I hope I explained my self properly and I an open to any discussion about my points.

[SPOILERS] Assassin's Creed Valhalla - Odin runes and possible path to a solution

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 01:59 PM PST

Continuing another set of mysteries, several people found peculiar Odin runes in the game, which led to some theories, analyzes etc. (especially when Darby McDevitt confirmed "you definitely found something").

While others were trying to find other runes and find a solution with different approaches, I decided to take a step back and actually ask myself: why are these runes and what do they have to do with Norse mythology?

And my findings proved there might be an answer with this knowledge. It turns out that Odin runes from the game seem to be based on real mythology.

    Source: https://twitter.com/jayveeonYT/status/1355216072241242113

Yggdrasil grows out of the Well of Urd, a pool whose fathomless depths hold many of the most powerful forces and beings in the cosmos. Among these beings are the Norns, three sagacious maidens who create the fates of all beings. One of the foremost techniques they use to shape fate is carving runes into Yggdrasil's trunk. The symbols then carry these intentions throughout the tree, affecting everything in the Nine Worlds.Odin watched the Norns from his seat in Asgard and envied their powers and their wisdom. And he bent his will toward the task of coming to know the runes.

So, it's worth to point out that Well of Urd is actually in the game. Moreover, we have an entire quest with it. You may ask "what does Odin have to do with it"? Let me introduce you the next part:

Since the runes' native home is in the Well of Urd with the Norns, and since the runes do not reveal themselves to any but those who prove themselves worthy of such fearful insights and abilities, Odin hung himself from a branch of Yggdrasil, pierced himself with his spear, and peered downward into the shadowy waters below. He forbade any of the other gods to grant him the slightest aid, not even a sip of water. And he stared downward, and stared downward, and called to the runes.

He survived in this state, teetering on the precipice that separates the living from the dead, for no less than nine days and nights. At the end of the ninth night, he at last perceived shapes in the depths: the runes! They had accepted his sacrifice and shown themselves to him, revealing to him not only their forms, but also the secrets that lie within them. Having fixed this knowledge in his formidable memory, Odin ended his ordeal with a scream of exultation.Having been initiated into the mysteries of the runes, Odin recounted:

    Then I was fertilized and became wise;

    I truly grew and thrived.

From a word to a word I was led to a word,

From a work to a work I was led to a work.

Equipped with the knowledge of how to wield the runes, he became one of the mightiest and most accomplished beings in the cosmos. He learned chants that enabled him to heal emotional and bodily wounds, to bind his enemies and render their weapons worthless, to free himself from constraints, to put out fires, to expose and banish practitioners of malevolent magic, to protect his friends in battle, to wake the dead, to win and keep a lover, and to perform many other feats like these. - source

    Few things to point out:

    • Odin's action is basically a sacrifice of himself to himself - who could be a nobler offering to the god than the god himself?
    • All this is from a Poetic Edda. You know why is this important? Or maybe you've seen it before around marketing of AC Valhalla? Because right before release of the game, Darby himself recommended to read it!
    • You can actually find an Odin Spear too in the game! What if these two things (Well of Urd and Odin Spear) could be the keys to solving the mystery of runes? Maybe Odin Spear could be important in interacting with either Well or runes?

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the game due to some reasons, but I'm sharing this information with hope someone can advance and probably find the mystery.

(SPOILER) I don't understand the significance of what you read in Alfred's study

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:27 AM PST

I feel this is a question I should have asked sooner but I'm not exactly sure what the significance is of the information you find once you get Alfred's key. The game presents the whole thing sort of like it will reveal a huge chunk of information that will put certain events in a different light but it really doesn't, it just gives us the idea that Alfred was aware of our actions throughout the game and a general idea that Charlemagne might have been a member of the Order and gives motivations for why Alfred acted the way he did. Am I missing something important or is this just a little bit of lore and world building.

After 178 hours, I finally completed Valhalla! I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, here are my thoughts.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 01:55 PM PST

I completed Valhalla this morning after 178 hours, 35 minutes. All achievements completed, and a final level of 400 plus 61 mastery points. As background info, I started my AC journey with AC:2, and have played through to 100%: 2 (twice), Revelations, Brotherhood, III (3 times), Liberation, Black Flag (3 times), Unity (twice), Syndicate, and Odyssey. Odyssey seriously soured me on the franchise. I hated much of it, and was just ready to get done with it after only a few hours play. I eventually completed it at 128 hours. BUT, I actually really like Valhalla. Its definitely not one of my top in the series, but after Odyssey's bitter taste, Valhalla is a breath of fresh air.

    What I loved/liked:

-Complete assassinations of all enemies. Full stop, THE thing that actually made me interested in playing it again. With this, I can afford to go full stealth, infiltrate camps and castles with much higher levels and still get out alive. Add to this chain assassination, and I was nearly unstoppable so long as I could hide. I could upgrade my weapons to flawless long before I was levelled up where I could get tungsten ingots.

-Loved the puzzles aspect. Cairn stones, caves, anomalies, etc. It brought back the old Ezio days of having to actually figure out a puzzle, except with cairn stones, it was better since there was more than one solution.

-I actually appreciated the combat a bit more, mainly though since after about 80 hours or so, I was so absurdly over-powered as to make most fights easy, which brings me to my next great point…

-One of my favorite aspects of AC is that after a while, I enjoy being the greatest, almost invincible killing machine in the region. In Black Flag, I loved that I could single-handedly clear a Man-o-War in a matter of seconds. In Valhalla, I carried the original Hunner Bow (maxed out eventually), and carried Pappy's Ax throughout the entire game (until I was able to get Excalibur, which was disappointing honestly. I expected more blinding than I ever got). Occasionally switched to Predator or Light Bow if I ran out of arrows in a boss fight. Other than that, I literally never used other weapons except maybe in one fight and realized I like my ax better. I was still several regions away from the end and was well past level 400. I beat the daughters of Lerion without needing more than one ration by that point, and it was beautiful!

-Valhalla made me enjoy stealth, and actually allowed me to use it successfully. I could head shot a bowman, wait for his buddies to run check on him, then slip around and steal the loot before they even knew I was around. I liked that I could run into a town and blend into the environment. I loved using priests to blend my way past guards.

-I even like catching the tattoo pages. Brought me back to the old sea shanty days. Except this time, the page stops and lets me pick it up instead of having to physically outrun it.

-I loved the Viking atmosphere and terrain. I enjoyed the old castles, forts, rivers, etc.

    - I really liked that winning flytings helps in your dialogue choices. You can basically build up your charm.

-I. Freaking. Love. Orlog. I wish I owned an actual game of it. Its not defeating-Achilles-at-Fanorona happiness, but it made me very happy winning that game a lot.

-I loved that the hidden blade was used, and Assassins are actually in the game, even if they aren't called that by name. Seeing the symbol on the bureau walls was heartening.

-I also really kinda liked how it ended (with Sigurd and Eivor anyway). The Basim part of it, I was just more like, "Why would you do anything this guy says Layla?! You've already seen exactly who is he and he will always betray you. Its what he does!"

    What I didn't like:

-This game is freaking huge. Way too huge. I wasted a lot of early time trying to get all loot. I mean every chest and opal in Ledecestishire and Grantebridgeshire. Then I figured out they weren't necessary and that it was ok to leave it glowing on the map. That's hard for a completionist, but I did it. I definitely would liked to have had less space or things to get, like wealth. So much time is just riding to get somewhere.

-Yep, parkour is still terrible. I have yet to understand why Unity could have a "free run down" button and others can't. How many damn mountains do I have to leap off of when I could free run down it ten times faster without losing health. Also, back eject? That would have been nice to have on MANY occasions.

Edit: evidently everyone can back eject except me. I've tried it on rock ledges, in churches to get to ladders, you name it, its never made me jump straight back ever.

-Order of the Ancients needs to blacken or obscure the people better. Few times I could easily tell who the person was by their head shape and clothes before they were revealed.

-Maybe its just me, but I dislike the actual numbers used in the levelling. Level 380 just seems absurdly odd to me. Why not levels 1-10? Takes the same time to level up, still can use the skill tree, but you go up in number every 20 skill points used or so. That's a personal preference though.

-I wish we could use longships more than just transport. I know its not accurate, but it seems like an awful waste to have it sit there and just look cool.

-WHY DOES THE SONG STOP EVERY TIME THE RAID BUTTON APPEARS?! How hard would it be to let a song continue playing?!

-Like many, either make some modern day stuff to do, or don't. But don't half-ass it. I enjoyed the anomaly puzzles, but if you can exit the animus, have something to do more than read a new email.

Overall, I've put a lot of time into this game, and for me personally, Valhalla is a good game, and if it weren't so crazy massive, I'd call it a great game. But I definitely have enjoyed it, and it made me actually feel somewhat hopeful about the future of the series. Much as I hate the rpg-ness they have now, if they let me one-shot assassinate and hide in the bushes to do it, I'll be in for the long haul.

And truth be told, I got chills when the people of Ravensthorpe began chanting that haunting verse and beating their chests at me. "For those who fight, for those who fall…"

I'd love to discuss anything further. With this much time in, I'm anxious to talk to some people about it lol (none of my friends are gamers)

About how close am I to finishing AC Valhalla?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2021 12:27 AM PST

I'm pledging to Cent right now and am 32 hours in. I don't wanna seem like I'm not enjoying the game, but... please for the love of God tell me it'll be over soon or at least get interesting. I try to finish every game I play but if this one isn't over soon, I might just give up.

I cannot complete the side quest in Sherwood because Little John is dead. Tried fast travel, reloading, even deleting and reinstalling (PS4). It is the last thing I need for 100% exploration and nothing has worked. Can it be fixed or am I hosed?
