Assassin's Creed Valhalla General Discussion [Non-Spoilers]

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 01:10 PM PST

It's time for the release of Assassin's Creed Valhalla! This time, we're playing in the time of Vikings, complete with sailing, raiding, and exploring the beautiful world we know Ubisoft does so well.

This is the general megathread - meaning NO SPOILERS! This is the space to come discuss the game in a safe and spoiler-free environment. You can discuss your basic thoughts of the story, how you're enjoying the gameplay, or even what character you choose, just NO STORY SPOILERS. Not a peep about story spoilers please. And one more request - AC Valhalla has quite a few interesting puzzles. As a courtesy, if someone is asking for puzzle solutions, we're requesting you use spoiler tags to allow others to solve the puzzles themselves.

Our spoiler policy in this thread remains the same as it's been for the sub for the last two weeks or so, posting untagged story spoilers will result in a TWO WEEK, NON NEGOTIABLE BAN, MINIMUM There's no excuse for spoilers. If you're not sure about something, spoiler tag it. Just saying "spoilers" before the text of your comment is not properly using spoiler tags. If you see something spoilery either here or elsewhere on the sub (besides the spoiler megathread), please either use the report button or message the mods. Please keep things civil, and do not engage in spoiler disputes.

If you feel you absolutely have to discuss spoilers, then scoot away from here. Head on over to visit the Megathread for spoilers which can be found here. Don't make us ban you, we honestly don't like having to ban users. Especially over something that could have been so easily avoided. Keep your mods and fellow Redditors happy, and everyone wins!

Remember our normal subreddit rules, posts with spoilers in must be clearly tagged, include the word "spoiler" in the title, and please do not put actual spoilers in the title under any circumstances!

Use the following formatting to spoiler-tag your comments:

    Preferred method:

    >!Eivor is a Viking.!<

    Result: Eivor is a Viking.

DO NOT leave any spaces at the start or the end. You can also use the "Spoiler" function in Reddit's text editor.

    Alternative method (Old Reddit):

[Valhalla Spoiler](#s "Eivor is a Viking.")

    Result: Valhalla Spoiler

This method primarily works for old Reddit and may not work on Redesign. We encourage everyone to use the first, preferred method.

Interested in reading reviews? Head on over to the Review Megathread which can be found here. Please note, some reviews may have spoilers.

Having tech support issues? We have a thread for that as well which can be found here.

So, let's get into the Viking Assassin groove as we play Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

Thank you all for your consideration and cooperation! Happy gaming as we go a-viking!

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Spoiler Discussion [Spoilers Allowed]

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 01:12 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

Today is the day! Assassin's Creed Valhalla is now released (for some) and we can finally board our longships, blow our horns and go a-viking to explore the lands of England. Begin anew, grow a community, form alliances, discover ancient secrets, outdrink everyone or adopt a cat! It's up to you.

As part of our launch day preparations, we are creating this megathread for everyone to discuss their spoiler - filled first impressions of the game. Feel free to discuss the main story, world events, the present day, First Civilization, lore or anything else you may like.

The only rule around here is more of a polite request - please tag any spoilers for end-game quests and content. Some people may want to rush the story, others would prefer to enjoy the game and the world at a slower pace, so don't be that guy and please be considerate to your fellow readers.

Before posting on the subreddit, please read and follow our rules (especially those regarding spoilers, we mean it!) and make sure to add [Spoilers] to your title if you wish to discuss spoilers. And don't ever post actual spoilers in the title. Just don't do it.

    How to hide spoilers:

    Preferred method:

    >!Eivor is a Viking.!<

    Result: Eivor is a Viking.

DO NOT leave any spaces at the start or the end. You can also use the "Spoiler" function in Reddit's text editor.

    Alternative method (Old Reddit):

[Valhalla Spoiler](#s "Eivor is a Viking.")

    Result: Valhalla Spoiler

This method primarily works for old Reddit and may not work on Redesign. We encourage everyone to use the first, preferred method.

If you're looking for a more general non - spoiler discussion, then what are you doing here? Go over to the General Discussion megathread or catch up with the latest Valhalla revews in the Review megathread.

Thank you for your understanding and happy gaming!

I painted lady Eivor in anticipation for the release!

A short animation I made in Blender to mark the release of Valhalla. I was really proud of the photorealism I achieved with this piece. I can't wait to play it!

PSA - Norse Mythology and the Misappropriation of Culture by White Supremacists

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 12:00 PM PST

We all know that guy, the one who got way too into [a video game or movie] and it took over his personality. Naruto-running through the hall, looking like Neo on a hot summer day, stalking the local woods with a sword looking for Korok Seeds while speaking to his fairy. Some of us have been that guy, with our Skyrim and Mass Effect tattoos or our wardrobe influenced by video game characters. 99% of the time there's no problem with this – it can be a little cringe, but who cares. Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a special case, though.

Over at least the past decade neo-nazi/white supremacist groups have been bastardizing Norse religions and using them as sneaky recruitment tools, co-opting imagery to represent themselves and their values with. I have two (former) friends, both overweight gamers with beards who have been sucked into these Odinist groups, and I witnessed them alter their views to align with this new "family" and their slow descent into spiteful, bigoted husks.

As we play this game and search for content on Google our recommendations and targeted advertisements are going to change just enough that we're likely going to be shown local Facebook groups and webpages that fall into the above category. I'm not your dad, I can't tell you what to do, all I can do is urge you to do a little reading and figure out who these people are and what they stand for if you ever become intrigued – it may be more than you expect and a path you'd later regret. This isn't just about you; if you see a friend, that guy I spoke about in the first paragraph going down this path, intervene while they'll still listen to reason.

Additionally, I'm certain some of you will eventually go out and get tattoos inspired by ACV, just as some of you have done with other Assassin's Creed releases. If you do, please do some research on the iconography before permanently (accidentally) attaching yourself to a symbol of hate. As I stated above these hate groups have co-opted some of this imagery and they've created some of their own, which will get lumped in with your search results for tattoo ideas.

Don't take my word for any of this, go out and read about it yourself. I just thought this was worth mentioning while we're all super excited to play this new game.

Valhalla has addressed an issue I had with Revelations *SPOILERS*

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 06:00 PM PST

I always found it a bit jarring that Ezio destroyed Cappadocia (full of civilians) and didn't really stop to think about it. It was massively against the creed and also out of character. It was never really touched on again in Revelations.

In a modern day audio file in Valhalla, Desmond tells Rebecca about an experience of the bleeding effect where he felt Ezio's emotions on the ship journey back from Cappadocia. He tells her how he was wracked with enormous guilt and that it might even be the moment where Ezio decided he would soon be giving up the life of an Assassin.

There have been a few other moments that call back to previous games in a satisfying way that I won't mention, but suffice to say I'm happy that it's tying up some lose ends, even small ones.

High power level areas do not mean "wait till endgame before exploring"

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 06:22 PM PST

Just wanted to let some people know that it just means be careful around enemies there. There's a lot of content to explore in the 280 power level that does not require combat, there's towns to go to and abilities to find. Also the content in the power level 280 area at the begiinning of the game, actually gives you early game loot, if you wait till you're power level 280 before doing it you're going to find all the loot from it to be useless. The ability you get from there is freaking awesome too and there's no enemies protecting it. That area was definitely meant to be explored early in the game. You aren't going to die.

Feedback : A possible way to have a closer camera option for battles in Valhalla

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 11:18 AM PST

Guys, i am absolutely certain if we went to the ubisoft forum https://discussions.ubisoft.com/?lang=en-US and we make a post with at least a 100 or so upvotes and some comments we will definitely get an option in an upcoming patch there's already 2 posts in there, i noticed here that a lot of people are complaining about the camera distance during combat that sometimes it get soooo far away it instantly becomes non immersive less engaging and impactful and you can't see whom you're fighting. Ubisoft always listen to feedbacks and this is our only way to make this great game even greater.

Here's one over here https://discussions.ubisoft.com/topic/76749/feedback-optional-close-camera-setting-for-closer-fov-during-combat and another one over here https://discussions.ubisoft.com/topic/76783/feedback-the-field-of-view-option-should-be-in-consoles-as-well-also-a-camera-option if we could get one of those to at least 100 like i absolutely guarantee you that we would get an option Asap, the same thing happened recently with breakpoint and soon after they gave them 3 different camera sets close, far, and dynamic.

If you are on the fence and are afraid of a reskin, put those fears FIRMLY to bed.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 10:59 PM PST

Seriously, you don't understand until you are playing this. Watching footage is one thing, but then seeing and feeling it is another entirely. New assets everywhere, new movement, superior exploration and questing, huge leap in visuals, better voice acting and atmosphere that will leave you speechless. This has all the hallmarks of a 'special' game. I mean, I could tell I was going to love it, but it has far exceeded anything I was expecting.

Side note: For reference, I am playing on Xbox One X. And again, the game has just floored me. Like instant classic level of being floored.

I don't want to leave Norway

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 07:14 PM PST

It looks so damn good. The music, the ambience, the aurora borealis, the massive mountain peaks, the snow, the weird noises the ice makes, the norse architecture, the mystical feel. God damn, Ubisoft really outdid themselves on that one, it's so beautiful I don't want to leaaaaaaaave. I really hope Northumbria has the same feeling, because I want more of this.

The voice quality in this game is god awful

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 10:23 PM PST

I don't know what it is with Ubisoft and compressing the absolute shit out of their audio files, but god DAMN are the voices grainy as all hell. Does anyone know if they are going to release a high-quality audio pack for those of us who wouldn't mind the extra 20-ish GB for human-sounding voices? I'm tired of every character in Assassin's Creed games sounding like a robot.

Darby McDevitt Should Be the Lore Master of the AC Franchise Moving Forward

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 10:45 PM PST

Not revealing anything about the new game. No spoilers. Don't worry. But I think for the good of the franchise, Darby McDevitt should be made the lore master of the entire Assassin's Creed Franchise moving forward. It needs it. And it will prevent future entires from being inconsistent.

Ideally, he should keep writing future titles, but he can't possibly write every script in the franchise. It's not humanly possible unless Ubisoft delays the games by at least 3 years to develop. So instead? Have a Lore Master than can control the direction of the franchise. They can tell new writers important elements that NEED to be told and the rest is up to them. Like a guideline. This will prevent inconsistencies between games, especially the modern day. If they keep bringing in a new writer each game, it will just keep messing up the franchise story.

I like the direction Valhalla is going. It's setting up something awesome that I genuinely feel is a return to form for the franchise.

The camera in combat needs to be closer

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 08:44 AM PST

I have been playing a few hours now and this is my only gripe. There should be an option to put it closer so you can see better the gore and the details of the combat.

Interesting thing about Eivors voice before you select which gender.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 03:27 PM PST

If you listen closely to Eivors voice through the party scene it is slightly modulated.

I think it might be linked to the fact that the animus is picking up 2 simultaneous bloodlines at the same time, so imagine a boy and a girl speaking at the same time but in one body, it's a nice little detail.

What are some other little things you've found so far?

Ps4 pro is going to valhalla

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 06:55 PM PST

We all know the ps4 pro is a jet engine and it gets super noisy but I think Valhalla will send it to Valhalla.

It's already super loud with odyssey so I dread to think how loud it'll be with Valhalla! At least if it does die it will die fighting with honour!

Battle with Thor! Drink with Odin! Sit amongst the greats! To Valhalla, my friend!

Valhalla is the best game in the series to date - here's my review.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 03:58 PM PST

Here's my review of Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Honestly, I think it's the strongest game in the entire series. It's gorgeous, clever, and makes the modern narrative matter without compromising on the historical moment it's set in (which it nails). Excellent game that I think most AC fans will immensely enjoy.

Ubisoft, PLEASE improve facial animations in future AC games

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 10:31 PM PST

The game is visually stunning as always but the one thing that has been a constant issue in AC games is the facial animations and dialogue synch up. It just still annoys me that a billion dollar studio is still having this issue. It's time to break the bank and invest in some good MoCap technology.

How would people feel about a Medieval Assassin's Creed to follow Valhalla? And no, not like the original AC

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 08:39 AM PST

So I've seen this idea floated a few times, but usually they wanted to explore the Arthurian style myth, which is a bit ridiculous (although you could have a grail quest and tie the grail back to the Ancient ones). No I think a cool AC setting would be Medieval England and France during the 100 Years War. Your ancestor became an Assassin during the Third Crusade(from Assassin's Creed) and set up a chapter in England/France. You know are a knight fighting in the 100 years war, which could have a similar format to The Peleponessian war in Odyssey. Also, like the new settlement feature in Valhalla, you could have your own Castle, that you upgrade and develop.

    What do yous think?

You can use your hidden blade in combat.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 10:27 AM PST

Holding L1/LB will let Eivor use her offhand attack, If the player don't have anything equipped in their offhand and you've unlocked the hidden blade already, using the attack will allow Eivor to use the hidden blade on enemies in combat. It is a short range attack and also cost quite abit of stamina, but the feature is there and I love using it. I wonder if guaranteed assassination will also apply for this, so players that opt in for full stealth can still go combat with their hidden blade.
