Idea for a game, tell me if it sounds better than Vikings

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 10:15 AM PDT

I am very, very new to the AC world, but I am noticing that while some of us newbs just love the game play and storyline of Origins and Odyssey, those of you who love the series lament the loss of the true battle between Assassins and Templars.

I have an idea for Ubisoft to consider. The game would be called: Assassins Creed:Mayan Empire Conquest*. In 1511, a group of Spaniards was shipwrecked near Central America. Of the 20 or so survivors, all but two were captured and sacrificed by a Mayan Lord. This lead to the all out assault on the native people of Central America and Mexico.

Tenochtitlan fell in 1521. Soconusco in 1523, Q'umarkaj in 1524, Zaculeu in 1525. This is where the story starts. A father of two teenagers lives on the Yucatan peninsula and sees the danger coming. You can play as the male or female, as one decides to join a party of fellow Mayans to sail East West1 in a stolen Spanish ship to find help. The other, (The one you don't play) stays to protect the village.

Obviously, your ship sinks near Hawaii, but you make it to land and ask for help against the Spaniards. The Hawaiians can't help, but they know someone who can. They take you on a long journey to China, where you must find Shao Jun and train. While you are training with her, a message comes from Ezio that the Spaniards are, of course, Templars running roughshod through the new world looking for any First Civ artifacts they can find. It is your job to join the brotherhood and stop them. You sail back, and begin looking for artifacts as well, stopping Templars where you can.

This time period matches a stall in the Spanish attempt to take over the region, as Francisco de Montejo and his son, the cleverly named Francisco de Montejo the Younger, took 21 years to take the peninsula. The de Montejos would be your top baddies, connected to the top of the Templar food chain.

At the end, your character has to make a choice, continue defending the peninsula and risk First Civ artifacts falling into Templar hands, or give up her home, her people, and her land but keeping the artifacts away from the Templars, and containing them to that region. She chooses the latter, and hides the artifacts somewhere creative, never to be found again. Until they are.

    Your thoughts are welcome!

TL;DR: Mayan AC in 1520s, Spanish invaders are Templars, a kid becomes an assassin to protect her homeland and ends up protecting First Civ artifacts.

EDITs: *Hat tip to LaylaLegions for the improved title.
    1. Gpack418 pointed out that sailing East and getting to Hawaii makes no damn sense.

Replaying Ezios Collection and remembering why I loved AC

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 06:16 PM PDT

After just finishing Origins I'm Kind of maxed out on the huge world space with never ending generic side quests and collectibles. So I decided to fire up the old AC2 and it's funny how well I remember everything in that world.

Sure it's crude in some ways. Like the parkour mechanics are oddly slow and error prone, the combat is a bit one-dimensional with me being able to get through any fight just doing attack combo but it's just a lot more engaging overall for me.

I just love the whole Montereggioni aspect - collections of statues and codex pages and feathers. Although the feathers are kind of annoying. The sea shanties in Black Flag were better.

And of course the story line is just right up my alley with the historic thing. Meeting Leonardo is so much more interesting than meeting Cleopatra. I was so excited to get to her story part and then it was so simplistic and had missed so much opportunity. I could have been an interference aspect in so may more ways...

It just seems like the corporate success of the IP really sucked the artistry out of the franchise. According to a YT reviewer, Odyssey is the worst with grinding XP and a design that's all about making you buy helix coins.

What happened to the focus on more intricate puzzle platform type of gameplay. I am already looking forward to completing some of these crypts / tombs in Florence but in Odyssey I never felt like there were interesting challenges like that to do, where you had to use your noggin for a few minutes to work out how to traverse the place.

    Sigh.

I hope somehow, Ubisoft will chill out on maximizing profits at all costs and let studios go back to some true creativity.

And maybe also some better acting and writing. Even that is much more convincing in AC2 compared to later installments.

The failure to imagine a modern AC doesn't prove it can't be done, just proves said failure of imagination. It can be done. And the identity of the franchise could be retained.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 01:56 PM PDT

What defines, truly defines AC, or should define, is it philosophical struggle between assassins and Templars, with Sci fi elements, regardless of the weapons and time period.

First of all, there are examples of present day urban games that have fight combat as a primary form of combat instead of gunplay.

Sleeping Dogs allows for guns but encourages you to use your fists and most combat encounters are you kicking dudes in the face, not shooting.

So, we could indeed have a game that prioritizes stealth and fist gameplay with a modern setting. But, and I ask, what is the problem of guns?

Why does AC stop being AC if we get one in world war 1 or if we get cars and pistols?

As we witness in the new games, stealth has become a secondary thing, sadly.

The game incentivizes you, story and gameplay wise, to pick up your sword and become Warrior's Creed.

But it still has stealth so to a certain extent you could argue you still have a choice.

That same choice would be present in a modern game.

An AC doesn't stop being AC because it has guns. An AC stops being AC if it doesn't feature assassins, Templars, Isu and the creed in some sense.

Now let's talk setting. A modern day game doesn't have to be set in a city or just the city.

I think it could work best in that way but it isn't the only way to make a modern AC.

Look at The Saboteur set in Occupied Paris. It even has parkour. And a quest for a mythical object. Nails the AC experience despite not being AC.

I mean look at Tomb Raider, with stealth kills with a knife, jump kills, focus vision, ancient artifacts and a big ancient order as a villain. It's not set in a city.

But I hear ya, RPG fans. You want a big open world with some urban elements but mostly nature and all. To explore it.

OK. Why not set a modern AC in rural Europe or something?

Switzerland. Andorra. Vast mountains, villages. Medium sized cities. Can be done. In fact I don't think there are many games that do that.

A big, not just a city, modern map with European rural elements.

Watch Dogs is not a good modern AC replacement. And that's OK.

Watch Dogs has its own feel and gameplay structure. So let's avoid suggesting it could be.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that a more modern or fully modern AC can be done.

I believe what truly defines AC is its philosophical struggle.

And just like in the lore, any time period has that struggle.

And modern day gives it, in theory, or used to give I mean, a great spin to differ it from generic spy stories.

Opinion: The Journey of Desmond Miles content in Revelations was the last bit of good story writing in the AC series.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 02:50 PM PDT

People call it out for being too big of a departure from normal AC content during that point in time, but for me it provided context and closure. In fact, those six short puzzle maps had better writing than the entirety of Unity, Syndicate, and Odyssey combined.

It's just Desmond alone, working through a computer-generated reflection program, considering his place in this larger struggle between Assassins and Templars. Trying to justify the things he'd done, the way he was stuck in disbelief, wanting to escape a place that to him felt stifling and dogmatic.

How he had never been given a choice in this ancient war, that the words of the Creed were constantly drilled into him without his consent or understanding. And for a short while, his escape from the Assassin order was pure bliss, a paradise of freedom compared to his old life.

But when the Templars came for him, his life came into focus sharply for the first time. He realized that the stories his mother and father had told him were all true, and that he had a role to play in this struggle.

The last words he says at the end of the program are:

"My name is Desmond Miles. And I am an Assassin."

Powerful stuff. No side quest nonsense, no vapid half-baked appeals to historical figures or the grand fight. Just one dude, trying to find himself in the chaos and make sense of everything. And at the end of it all, embracing that chaos by reaffirming his position in the world.

It made a full circle back to what Altair had said to Al Mualim.

    "Do you regret this life?"

"How can I regret the only life I have ever known?"

Rest in peace, Desmond. Let's hope Ubisoft has the sense to leave your memory alone, instead of violating and resuscitating your dead corpse for future plot contrivances.

[SPOILERS] Help em understand something in Assassin's Creed 2

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:42 PM PDT

In The Truth you can see that after seeing the Apple of Eden and climbing on yop of that building Eve somehow got it in her hand. So I'm wondering how did she get it? Why is it not shown in The Truth? I may be asking something not important but I've olayd the first 5 installments of this franchise and I'm trying to analyze what's really going on.

How would you react if the next Assassin's Creed game is Odyssey 2.0?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:15 PM PDT

I think it's very likely that it is very similiar to Odyssey. Most people (sadly) liked the gender/dialogue choices and fantasy elements and the Vikings setting seems rather fitting to make another AC that isn't about Assassins (not to mention Norse mythology could lead to more over the top fights against monsters).

Naval combat seems like a safe bet as well.

The instruction says i have to lock on to the target and hold the attack key(on pc so my lock target key was set as F and attack as left mouse key). And heres the problem: no matter how i press/hold the lock target key it wont let me to lock the target. If simply pressing the attack key to aim i always aim for the wrong place. And i cannot tilt angle while im aiming. Have yall see this problem before and any ideas on how to solve this? Am i doing this right though ive stucked here for like a week

Finished AC Odyssey, here are my thoughts

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 08:40 PM PDT

Today, after 178 hours, I finally finished the Odyssey. By "finished" I mean main story, all "yellow" sidequests, all "blue" Forgotten Stories, both expansions, and Discovery Tour (tours & stations). I didn't clear everything on the map, and mostly ignored "black" sidequests - and I guess no one will be surprised.

So, here are my thoughts. Many points will compare Odyssey to Origins, sorry for that - but first, I played these immediately after (bought both in a big bundle on sale, along with Unity & Syndicate - and played consecutively, thanks to new PC which finally allowed that), and second, it was a previous game in series.

    WORLD & VISUALS

World: Origins was one of "jaw dropping" games for me. Sure, it was also one of first games I played on a new PC, but nothing further (so far) beat that. Ptolemeic Egypt is immersive and feels real, allowing to ignore size limitations (which are clear at second glance, especially Alexandria). When I moved to Origins, it was "more of the same", but with time I started to appreciate job done there. Procedural generation of terrain (hills, rivers etc.) is very neat, and hidden well. "Biomes" idea works. I was afraid of "too big statues", but thankfully there are only few areas where these actually feel off (although one of these is where we start the game). On the other hand, tombs are very repetitive - sure, it would be probably impossible to beat Egypt in this area, but... it feels like nobody even tried. Result: 2 points to Origins, 1 to Odyssey.

Models: people, clothing, weapons, armour, objects, nature - well, Odyssey looks better. Not much, but still. Nothing surprising, as it's simply newer game. Also, customization of armour look is a very neat idea. Two points given.

Discovery tour: First, I would like to praise the idea in general - it might be the best example of "edutainment" in video games in recent years. Great job, Ubi. Moving to details - on one hand, I like more deep tours in Odyssey, and quiz is a neat idea. On the other, I have a feeling that overall, less effort was given here. Origins' tours might be below quality of Odyssey ones, but they are still solid, and there's more of them. And IMO it's clear that some tours in Odyssey were "downgraded" to sets of stations (e.g. olives in Phocis or funeral near Athens). Also, there that infamous "male walk" of female avatars. Two points to Origins, one to Odyssey.

In future, IMHO Ubisoft should focus on voiced tours (few major ones with Odyssey depth, remaining Origins), using stations only for single topics (e.g. they could be merged with "eye" locations and "behind the scenes" - which is cool btw).

And of course, Codex should return anyway - these fulfill different roles.

    Result - 4:4

    AUDIO

Music: Generally very good. Menu track is a banger, and music in the game is nice. However, I have strong Witcher 3 vibes there (especially emotional cutscenes), maybe too strong. What Schachner did in Origins was more - nomen omen - original, and generally better - actually, one of three best AC soundtracks (along Black Flag and Syndicate). Point to Origins.

Voice acting: I played Kassandra, and her actor did great job, as well as Alexios-Deimos actor. However, mirrored combo (based on YT) seems "off", and doesn't work that well. Other characters were generally voiced well, nothing amazing, but also nothing below solid level. Still, it's hard to beat Salim's performance as Bayek. Sorry, point goes to Origins.

    Result: 0:2.

    STORY

Main story: Odyssey story is weird. It has some nice moment, but suffers from very bad pacing. Origins' had some problems (especially at the ending), but was generally much better. Point to Origins.

Protagonist: While they are very different, I liked both Bayek and Kassandra. Draw.

Villains: "Cult" system added in Odyssey is cool... but doesn't work well instead of regular "targets". I especially missed "departure" scenes. While I finished Odyssey later, I hardly remember various Cultists (except two historical characters), while I still can name some from Origins (Scarab/Taharqa, Hyena, Crocodile, even Flavius). IMHO in the future, Ubisoft should mix both approaches - use "Cultist" system for minor henchmen, but give major villains or "ringleaders" more personal touch, and departure cutscenes. Point here goes to Origins.

Sidequests: Liked these in both games, but Origins had clearly better (even if not significantly) writing. Again, point to Origins.

Modern day: Origins was mediocre, but still better than anything in previous games. I actually liked Laila there, and enjoyed e-mails etc. Unfortunately in Odyssey, first it's downgraded to next to non-existant, and later completely butchered in second expansion. Until that moment, Laila was fine to me. No longer. Two points to Origins.

And in general - modern day story needs heavy overhaul. Probably new protagonist (as Laila was ruined in Odyssey expansion), return of known and liked characters (Shaun, Rebecca, William Miles), base (Altair II would be perfect) with some lore content (talking to other people, e-mails etc.), some solid modern day missions.

Expansions: Legacy of the First Blade was OK, but romance felt forced. And anyway, it couldn't beat "brotherhood" story of the Sinai expansion. Second DLC offered us three various locations, and TBH I liked only middle one (also because of closure quests about Brosidas and Phoibe). Atlantis was... meh. In comparison, Curse of the Pharaohs offered us new area in Egypt, including some major historical locations (Thebes, Valley of Kings), and four "afterlfie" areas. Two points to Origins, again.

However, I'd like to add bonus point for dialogue choices in Odyssey. Even if only cosmetic, these felt nice and immersive.

    Result - 2:8.

    GAMEPLAY

Combat: Odyssey was more enjoyable, combat in Origins felt clunky in some areas. Assassination on one hand needed upgrading, but was quite satisfying when maxed (and Death Veil, while made no sense, was a very gameplay-friendly addition). Archery was better in Origins, however. Still, point goes to Odyssey.

Loot: it's good in Odyssey... but WAY too frequent. Origins' pacing in this area was a little better. Draw.

Character (skills etc.): Origins had it too complex, with many redundant skills. Odyssey is more simple, but in a good way. And combined with various loot, it allows much stronger focus. Only thing missing here is ability to quickly switch gear sets (w/o going into inventory). Still, point given.

Exploration: Odyssey is bigger... but also more crowded. I appreciated long rides in Origins - in Odyssey it was hardly possible. I think that game would be much better, if at least 30% of "question mark" locations (especially various camps) was deleted, and maybe even terrain in general a little (up to 120%) stretched. Point to Origins.

Also, I think that Fast Travel points could be placed better. There were some cases, where backtracking was painful (best examples - quests with "historian" guy in Boiotia; one of "blue" quests in Kechris). Every settlement (icon) in Origins was also a fast travel point, I don't know why it wasn't the same in Odyssey.

    Additional:

    • 1 point added for ability to save

    • 1 point added for Ikaros "remembering" spotted stuff (this was a pain in Origins)

    • 2 points deducted because of forced level scaling (not possible to turn off entirely).

    Result - 2:2.

Final result: 7:16. Sorry but Odyssey is overall a step back, mostly because of much worse writing - slight improvements in visuals and (partly) gameplay can't balance that. Still, it doesn't make Odyssey a bad game - it's simply worse than Origins, which was amazing. However, I strongly hope that rumours that it's Montreal, not Quebec, who is working on the Kingdom/Vikings (if you're interested on my thoughts about that one, check here) - are true.

Do I get to keep my purchased armor and stuff if I start a new game in AC Odyssey?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:17 AM PDT

Hi, so I haven't played Odyssey in quite a while now, and I want to start playing it again. I'd just like to know that if I start a new game with the same character that I used in my previous saved game (in my case, it's Alexios), will I automatically receive all the boosts, map reveals, armor, weapons, and ship cosmetics that I purchased from the store during my last save? And if so, do armor and weapons just appear in my inventory from the beginning or do I need to somehow reclaim them?

[SPOILERS] Help me understand something in Assassin's creed Revelations

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:52 PM PDT

In the ending when Jupiter shows you the end of the world (or the first cataclysm if that's how you call it) as you can see there's a woman holding a baby, and then there's a guy possibly running towards her who got dragged in the fire during the explosion of some sort. So it got me thinking, who are they? When I first saw the woman's face I thought she looks like Eve, so could it be Adam and Eve?

some ideas in had for combat system in future titles.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:50 PM PDT

i feel like AC has always had "realistic" and brutal combat (realistic in a way that all the characters do moves that real humans can do and do things in combat that you could kinda sorta pull off in real life). but there is an issue that has haunted this series for a long time, it's the number hell. it's when your sword does 1000 damage and your enemy has billion health. that shit ain't fun and i have been thinking about ways to get out of this number hell while retaining the brutal combat.

Odyssey and Origins took the right direction with the hitbox based combat, but i feel like this could be improved upon by introducing neck shots. these kill the enemy immediately just like headshot does in shooters. i know that this sounds like it could make the game too easy. but i feel like the neckshot could give AC's combat more tactical depth and make it more unique. but how would you pull off this neckshot? i feel like timing the hits in the right time could be a decent way.

Odyssey introduced elemental damage in AC which wasn't very well done IMO. but it can still be done better. i was thinking that there could be three damage types: regular damage which comes from damaging important organs, bleed damage which comes from destroying blood veins and stun damage which comes from concussion and shock when you're damaging your enemies. i feel like these types of elemental damage are way more realistic and would make the game more immersive than your character just magically making your weapon go in flames. all the weapons in the game are unique and expensive, they make different amounts these damage types but none are that much better than the others in order to avoid the earlier weapons becoming obsolete. so a dagger would do moderate amounts of regular and bleed damage, but it is faster and more accurate than other weapons which makes it easier to hit the neck, it is not very good for crowd control though. a heavy weapon would fare better against armored opponents and large groups but due to their slower nature they wouldn't be that good for duels as a sword for example would be. same would go for armor, they provide protection against different damage types but the end game armors wouldn't be that much better than the others. they just look better. also there wont be loot, you buy most of your weapons and find some unique weapons and armor from special locations. so it will be mostly down on what you'd like to wear.

i understand that this system i am suggesting is not perfect and could be improved by someone who actually knows about game design. but i feel like we can all agree that while Od/Or did some things well with the combat it still wasn't very good. i just want to find a way to retain this brutal combat from the older games while advancing with the game mechanics.

What bothers me most about Revelations is that it doesn´t have the track "Access the Animus" in it

    Posted: 30 Oct 2019 11:44 AM PDT

First Revelations had a great soundtrack but I think it is a little bit sad that the didn't use the chance to bring the track "Access the Animus" form the first Title Back because this fits Altair the most and was the best track from the first game.

At least we had a cool remix from Masyaf in the Library but I think it would be cool if Revelations would have featured more tracks from the first game like Brotherhood did it with ACII.

The outer worlds has multiple (many) open worlds that all look completely unique and they are big enough to still have a sense of exploration when you're wandering around. I think this allows the devs to make the regions more detailed and unique instead of having to fill so much space with copy paste buidlings and emptiness. I also think this would perfectly fit a viking game since vikings went to so many different places instead of having one big kingdom. There could be an england map, a spain map, a russia map and an iceland map that would all br connected by a large sea map. Sorta like Black flag.

Do I need UPlay for The Ezio Collection's DLC?

I'm doing a completionist run for each of Ezio's games and am currently on Brotherhood, but there are some secret locations and achievements tied to DLC in certain games in the collection, but I can't find where to access them.
