"Ubisoft is reportedly making developers pitch why their games are unique after the reception to Ghost Recon Breakpoint"

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:53 PM PDT

I don't see anyone talk about Assassin's Creed Revelations. At. All.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:33 AM PDT

    No, seriously.

I've not seen a single soul either here or someone next to me, talk about this game.

Not even as much as a mention in an unrelated post.

This is a crime and I won't stand for it!

Revelations is what I would say is probably the most underrated AC title in the entire franchise.

The way this game just answers certain questions, that the previous titles almost couldn't felt so satisfying.
To see old Ezio still moving forward, to solve a puzzle within this mystery of a world, where both Assassins and Templars are fighting for something, in which Ezio just keeps digging further into this chaos so he (and others) might understand things much better.

The Altaïr sequences felt so nostalgic and fascinating, as we kept discovering these sides of him that no one had seen before.

I will admit that the game did not contain the most memorable characters, but I don't think that puts the game even lower.

Also, the music, the music, is without a doubt my favourite. The main theme that plays during your first time booting up this game just screamed: "This is the last stop".

And that final scene with Ezio and Altaïr's corpse is goddamn, fucking legendary. Probably my favourite scene in the entire series, as Ezio understands everything and speaks to Desmond. That shit blew my mind back then and it will never leave.

This game deserves a lot more recognition, mostly for the fact that it's the last game for one of the best characters in this franchise and that it competes with other titles in which a main character concedes into their "Final Arc".

Ubisoft give up on things too fast

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:06 AM PDT

First off, keep in mind this post isn't another post that bashes origins/odyssey or RPG element and I don't hate recent games. I just want to say, is RPG element bad? No, was adding in RPG element the necessary answer? No.

I get it, unity and syndicate was disappointment for them. But that's really on ubisoft, the ones who were even more disappointed were us fans.

I mean just look at other games, dishonored, hitman, tomb raider, far cry, did they ever change their genre to fantasy RPG with flaming sword? Did we ever see naked agent-44 riding unicorn with magic spear?

They abandoned central genre assassin's creed had since the beginning of the franchise. Why not think of way to improve it instead of throwing it away? Changing genre away like that is not really an answer, it's more of running away from problems you don't want to directly face. That's basically what ubisoft did in origins and odyssey.

They didn't want to do anything with stealth/gameplay mechanic they had, they didn't know what to do with it so they just ran away to easier solution.

Open-combat that is dynamic and difficult at same time and good stealth mechanics that fits modern stealth games standard can co-exist, there already are games like that. Ubisoft just need to take example from them like they did with origins..

It applies same to modern day segment, there were lot of complaints about MD since AC1.

"Ubisoft : Okay, many people are complaining about modern day so let's kill our protagonist we have had for 5 games and is currently strongest assassin in modern day who has also gone through character development throughout games."

Normally I would think of ways to improve modern day segment so people would not complain, there are even people who want them just completely gone. But what ubisoft did after killing off Desmond meaninglessly, is not giving us any clear protagonist for 4 games.

Is there really no way to save modern day? There definitely is. There definitely is a way to satisfy both old fans and new fans, ubisoft just isn't doing it.

What convinced Shay Cormac that the Templars were better?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:51 PM PDT

Is he aware that the Templars want to dominate mankind and suppress free will with the help of the pieces of Eden (which Shay believed shouldn't be touched at all)? Sure, it's possible that what happened in Lisbon convinced him that absolute freedom can be dangerous, but the ideology of the Templars seems to contradict Shay's worldview.

I would enjoy Odyssey more if it wasn't an AC game

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:54 AM PDT

On it's own it's a good RPG honestly but because it's AC I expect certain things that just aren't there in the game and it affects my judgement of the game

If Ubisoft wanted to make a Bethesda/Bioware esque RPG they should have just started a new IP

Syndicate on Switch would make me so happy

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:03 PM PDT

Syndicate got a good amount of flack (and I could understand it) for being more of the same. That being the case if that more of the same was your cup of coffee Syndicate was fantastic. And honestly, my favorite current gen AC (since AC4 was a cross gen title I beat on 360)

With the announcement of the Rebel collection i realized Syndicate is a great candidate for a Switch port. Unity proofed difficult on PS4 and Xbox one (so Ubisoft probably doesn't look super fondly on it) and the newer games might be too big to run smoothly (at least not without a noticeable downgrade)

The Ezio collection would be great as well but I'd hate for it to be a "download voucher for other game(s) included" scenario.

I guess it's up in the air for which AC we will get on Switch, if we're lucky to get another port but my hope is on Syndicate.

    AC Unity - Second Time's The Charm...Mostly

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:55 AM PDT

A while ago I posted a thing asking if there were any big fans of Unity out there, because I personally never was one, in fact for me it matched AC3 in levels of what I wanted it to be being far, far more than what it actually was. For anyone who's curious, you can read that post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/assassinscreed/comments/ddrqmb/ac_unity_the_gem_that_never_quite_was/

Lately I've been playing through some of the old AC games just as a bit of fun, and eventually and inevitably I came to Unity. And, for a while, I was hesitant. I wasn't sure if I wanted to put myself through a game I knew I wouldn't enjoy. However, I had just put myself through AC3 again for reasons that I'm still not sure about. (The word 'Remastered' may have had something to do with it) But due to everyone's surprisingly optimistic thoughts on Ubisoft's massive next-gen misfire, I decided to give it a go. And, to my surprise, I found myself actually...really enjoying Unity. I'm gonna put these as bullet points so it saves some room, but fair warning this post is probably still going to be quite a long one...

I'll get my more negative thoughts out of the way first.

    - The story is a lot better than I remember, but it's too damn short. Each Sequence is only two or three missions long and the game has way too many subplots for such little actual storytelling, especially as most of them don't go anywhere or have any consequences. If each Sequence was somewhere between four and six missions long, a good amount of the problems with the story would be gone, instead having enough time to grow and evolve properly, much like Dead Kings does, as that's a sequence in its own right.

    - It's this point that leads into my next one: Because the game has so much going on, Arno's big change of character doesn't happen until the final two sequences of the game. And trying to pack his entire character arc into this space simply doesn't work. Just focusing on the main game, and not the Dead Kings add-on, Arno's character arc remains weirdly unfinished. We NEED to see how Arno evolves and changes after Elise's death and what finally makes him decide to control his impulses and return to the Brotherhood, not just a short cutscene at the end of the DLC. If the story is to end with Germain's death, which it should, the solution is simple. Have him kill Elise much, much earlier in the story. Have Arno go through that whole Nomad/Down in the Dumps part of the story just after the half way mark. That way, the final third/quarter of the game can be Arno's redemption. Building himself back up, fixing his mistakes. Yes, Dead Kings should be the next chapter of Arno's story, but it shouldn't have to finish the character arc the main game didn't have time to.

    - It often feels like the story completely misses the actual Revolution. Robespierre is in two campaign missions, and beyond that is shifted to co-op missions. Danton I don't think appears in the campaign (he is in co-op missions) at all. These guys where, for better or worse, the figureheads of the Revolution and they barely appear. Every so often someone will mention France is splitting at the seams, but we hardly see it in terms of story telling. There needs to be Revolution figureheads in both Assassin and Templar camps to connect the story and the history. Have Robespierre be a Templar. Have Danton be an Assassin. They were friends for a long time before Robespierre had him executed. Have him find out his 'friend' Danton is actually on the other side of this centuries old conflict. It's an easy fix that would vastly help Unity feel like it's using the history that's there, not waving at it as it sails by. (Imaginary points for anyone that got that movie reference)

    - Why, for the love of all things good, is there no French accents in this game?! Unity's playground of a map is so damn immersive its insane, but the moment someone talks that immersion is broken. Arno sounds like he went to Oxford and all the Templar guards and foot soldiers sound weirdly northern. We're in France, and I honestly can't think of a character that sounds like they've spent more than five minutes there.

Okay, that's my negative stuff out the way. All that ranting aside, I honestly did like the majority of the story and its subplots. They just needed a lot more time to develop, and none of them really got the chance. On to positive stuff...

    - I finally get the love for Arno. Yes, early on he seems like an slightly more HD Ezio knock-off, (Civilian outfit and hairstyle included) but as the story progresses the differences really start to show. I love that Arno joins the Assassins for his own reasons, as opposed to actually believing the things they do, it makes him one of the most interesting characters in the series, and he's jumped quite a way up the list for me. He's cocky when he needs to be, but that constant under-tone of him doing what he needs to do for revenge above everything else really makes him a good character for me.

    - Gameplay-wise, I had a great time. I've said several times before that Unity's parkour, in both function and animation, has always been my favourite, so naturally I've had a lot of fun free-running around Paris. But more than that, I've come to the conclusion that the Unity engine, at least a version of it that isn't riddled with bugs for months after release, is the engine that I think all AC games should run on. (I personally have never had any huge glitches like other people, guess I was just lucky like that.) The graphics are insanely good (better than Odysseys?) and Paris as a playground feels both alive due to its bustling crowds and the fact it's so detailed I often just stopped mid free run to look at tiny, pointless things like moss growing on walls and roofs. Unity truly is a beautiful game and thanks to the outfits usable in it, you can get a brief glimpse of how good other previous titles would look if they were remastered - properly remastered - on the Unity engine. Just imagine how insanely good the Ezio Collection would've looked if it was remastered on this engine.

    - On a minor side note, combat was also a lot better than I remember. AC3's still has the most cinematic moves in my opinion, especially its glorious double counter kills, but Unity's combat was still a lot of fun, and the Phantom Blade quickly became the most useful and most fun tool in my arsenal, and I wish it returned in other entries. However, the lack of using human shields in combat and the lack of whistling in stealth does ruin the flow of the game a bit too much, especially coming off the back of a trilogy of AC games that have them both.

    - Customisation is wonderful, that much I thought back when the game came out, but there's a couple of things I still desperately wish it had, minor and ridiculous as they may sound. First off, I wish you could choose which wrist the hidden blade is used on, especially as in the trailers Arno has it on his right arm. (Also I kinda always hoped Arno's twin gloves/bracers from the trailers would make it into the game, still a bit bummed they didn't) Secondly, I wish Arno's outfit, you know, the one in the trailers/cover art etc. also had a Legendary set version. It's my favourite outfit in the game, maybe even series, and it sucks having to wear low level gear especially on higher difficulty missions. (Also an option to put your hood down would've been marvellous)

    - Personally I was always a fan of the co-op element as well, even though it caused problems for a lot of people, because it was at its core a good idea, just one riddled with glitches. The only change I would make is to make the whole game a 'drop in/out' system for co-op, as opposed to the handful of co-op missions and, I think, normal free-roaming. That way you could team up with your friends whenever you want, to do whatever you want. In terms of having it make sense for the story, do it like Halo Reach. Each person's version of Arno shows up in their cutscenes. Simple.

So yeah, those are my thoughts having played through Unity again. Sorry it was a bit of a long read, I tried to cut it down as best I could. I kinda get the love now. It's not perfect, but it's a damn sight better than I remember, and if nothing else it's made me a bit more positive about going through Syndicate again. Admittedly, I don't really dislike Syndicate in any horrible way, it just seemed fairly bland and forgetful back when it came out. But if Unity can change my mind, what's stopped Syndicate doing the same?

    - TLDR: AC Unity is a damn sight better than I remember it being the first time round, but its biggest flaw is its story and how quickly it jumps from one plot point to the next without time to let things breathe.

I’m re-evaluating the AC series all over again...from the beginning.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:58 AM PDT

So out of a innocuous conversation with a friend about Black Flags GOAT status, I got stuck thinking about my relationship with the Assassins Creed Series. It's been awhile since I've played the series from the very beginning...Was AC1 really that bad? Was AC3 really that underwhelming? Is Black Flag really my favorite? Only one way to find out. Play them all over again...it's gonna take some time but I can't rest until these questions are finally answered so if anybody is interested, heres the first video of my journey.

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

It is weird feeling in such a minority, but I honestly never liked the Ezio Trilogy

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:36 AM PDT

I get it, it's the peak of the series, everything else sucks, all that jazz. But I never really thought they were good. No I should say they're THAT good. I just thought they were ok.

It suffers from early series controls where it just feels clunky, I know people prefer this but I don't. I don't like how 1 dimensional the villians were. And the tower defence in Revelations speaks for itself. Revelations is definitely the best of the trilogy but I only liked that for the Altair missions.

I approach the Ezio Trilogy the same way I approached Ocarina of Time. Is it good? Yes. Is it the best the series had to offer? No way in hell.

Also don't ramble on a subreddit in a bar drunk because then you'll get random garbage like this.

    Ezio trilogy. It's ok.

If Alexios or Kassandra founded their own mercenary company, what would they name it? Also some thoughts on the merc system

    Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:10 AM PDT

Very random question, I realize, but I figured it might be fun and I'd imagine it hasn't been asked before. I recently played metal gear solid 5, which blew me away and has by far the best stealth mechanics of any game I've played. much as I love the AC games, playing Odyssey right after mgsv unfortunate, because the latter really does point out how lacking the former is in the stealth department (though there are many things that are wonderful about Odyssey). That said, while playing, I was struck by the influence that Odyssey obviously took from mgsv, in terms of recruiting NPC's. It unfortunately is kinda barebones in Odyssey, but I do love the idea. And it actually makes me wish that Alexios or Kassandra could start their very own full blown mercenary company, Diamond Dogs style. I was thinking about how in my "headcanon", Kassandra probably doesn't do every single thing alone, but would bring a few of her lieutenants along when storming forts.

It'd have been cool if you could design a logo for your company, and if you'd like, wear it on your armor, or make it into a flag and use it as the sail on your ship. Would make sense how all these damn lazy villagers instantly know that you're a mercenary, and therefore the perfect person to fetch them some wine or whatever. And I'm sure Ubisoft, being Ubisoft, would throw some form of online competition thing in there, like all missions you do gets your merc company "points" or whatever, and there are weekly leaderboards. And while I'm throwing out ideas, I think it'd have also been cool to extend the mercenary system that's already in the game to a "friendly/ally mercenary" system. In theory, it would be fun if you could pay other mercs in the area to aid you in missions, and maybe if you work with them repeatedly, their price drops, signifying that you've become "friends". I say it would be cool "in theory", though, because the Odyssey AI is hilariously, bafflingly bad at times, and any friendly AI would probably be more hindrance than help. Again, Ubisoft could be Ubisoft and work a coop option in there, with other players being able to drop into your world as a mercenary that you've hired.

I love the merc system as an idea, but it's fairly shallow in game. Would love to see it be given further depth in later installments. The idea of building something like that over the course of a 100 hour game sounds very fun for me, and ties right into Ubisoft's philosophy of neverending content. Hell, taking further influence from mgsv, it'd be fun to be able to go full Golden Company and get elephants and trebuchets in the place of tanks and helicopters

Anyway, back to the original topic. just for fun, if they did found a merc company, what suitably Greek name would they give it? First thought was Cerberus. maybe a bit cliche. Or maybe they'd have gone for The Eagles (I hate the fucking Eagles maaan) or The Herons or something assassins creedy. And if it had been an option, what would you have named it? Considering how the endgame content has been going for me lately, I'm thinking The Damage Sponges would be a good name. maybe Prometheus' Fire if we're being lore friendly

I feel like I have killed so much more mercenaries than the ones that appear on the list. I have definitely discovered more than what appears on the list. In fact, looking at it now, it shows that I have no defeated mercenaries when before it showed that I had defeated quite a few. Does it change up every now and then? And if so, how does it change?
