Positivity post; While everyone else is arguing about 'old Assassin's Creed Vs. new Assassin's Creed', I'm just here loving my favourite game series.

    Posted: 22 May 2021 10:37 AM PDT

I'm aware it's not perfect; I have issues with all but two of the games, thought the movie was just OK and Odyssey REALLY pisses me off in a lot of ways, but I don't hate nor will I ever hate and abandon Assassin's Creed. I love the characters, the worlds, the lore, the themes, the music, the stories, the games, the novels, the comics, the films etc.

If you wanna call me a shill go ahead.

"I've been reading the calculations" - Ubisofts maddening microtransaction practices (no spoilers)

    Posted: 22 May 2021 10:23 PM PDT

So I opened Valhalla again today after a few weeks of not playing, and was greeted with yet another character pack, the "modern day pack". This in itself is another greater issue within the assassins creed franchise, but not the one I'm focussed on in this post. Something I've never seen people do before is calculate every single item they have for sale on the helix store. So I got to work.

14 character packs total, 2 mythical weapon packs, 16 naval packs, 12 settlement packs, and a single tattoo pack. None of these items contain any duplicates, so each is required to buy if you want every single item Valhalla has to offer. And I have no doubt there is more to come.

This costs a total of 42,500 Helix credits, which equates to buying the Extra Large Helix Credit Pack 7 times, or the Large Pack 10 times and Basic Pack once. A total of $539 is contained inside valhalla's Helix store. Not to mention the $80 price tag for the game with barely even close to that many gear sets available for free, and the $40 price tag for a dlc which is basically copy pasted game design set in a new location, with minimal extra content.

So the biggest question is, why does ubisoft, a billion dollar corporation, need $660 for a player to experience everything they have to offer. The answer is simple... corporate greed.

Look at any other single player open world game in recent years: The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, The Outer Worlds. None of these games come even close to to this, with the maximum amount for any of them topping at $80 (plus whatever the dlc costs, which if TW3 has anything to say, won't be much) with Cyberpunk 2077.

You may read this post and think "just don't buy them" but that isn't relevant. Ubisoft will keep shilling these products, regardless of if people buy them, because there will always be some fools who do. They boost ubisoft's sale numbers, and they simply won't stop adding them. This needs to stop. When did "$40 for a full experience" turn into "$80 for part of the game, and $600 for the rest"?

Finished my Eivor drawing in Graphite, 2021

    Posted: 22 May 2021 12:40 PM PDT

Eivor should of been a Villian Protagonist or have a Redemption arc

    Posted: 22 May 2021 09:23 PM PDT

For Christ sakes, your a viking that raids innocent villages and burns down peoples homes as they scream and cry. The story tries so hard to make you this hero and villanize the English at times when all they are doing is trying to get you out of their land

I also do not know why the Assassin Brotherhood take any interest with being allies with you and setting up camp at Ravensthornpe. You literally are what the Assassins despise

You compromise the brotherhood and your clan literally kills innocent people.

"Stay your blade from the flesh of the innocent" Assassins Crees Tenant

Now, I don't mind this narrative, and being a murderous viking. But just be real with who they were and who you are. Make us know we are not honourable people, let us feel guilty for our actions. Have us conflict between our viking urges or the brotherhoods principles. There is so many potential routes this story could of went...but instead we get Sigurd being buttburt that his Dad maintained a peace union throughout Norway and cant be king anymore, so lets just fucken raid England...

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Black Flag were great examples of playing a none honourable person. Edward Kennway was a cocky and greedy man not caring about anything but his loot, only until he realized his actions had consequences. He changed for the better, and I enjoyed that transition of character. Arthur Morgan as well, he is in a gang and its not honourable work but he is written so well that you still route for him. Arthur does what he has to do to provide for his gang but never oversteps or goes beyond his personal morals.

Assassins Creed Valhalla could of taken this route, I can keep going but my point is this

We play such a dishonorable character and its sometimes hard to connect to Eivor because she obviously does not deserve the positive and hero complex narrative this game is trying to shove into our mouths. Eivor could of been a conflicted character between two sides of viking or assassin. Or a redemption arc and the creed making her realize her foolish ways of raiding and pillaging

Valhalla's story is brilliant in many ways but I can't help feeling it's held back by ubisoft demanding a RPG grind.

    Posted: 22 May 2021 08:14 PM PDT

Let's be honest. I am 99.999% sure that in Darby McDevits original vision for the game he had Eivor become an assassin, he probably also wanted more assassins in general and for the assassins templar conflict to be more ingrained in tbe narrative. With respects to the narrative I really think it feels like Darbys desire for a real "assassins creed" narrative conflicting with ubisofts desire for a game catering to RPG fans.

I have no problem with a viking fantasy, in fact blackflag is my favorite game in the series in large parts for it how it meshed a pirate fantasy in the assassin fantasy. The only "mainstay" of assassins creed are the ISU present. And even they are presented in a fantasy way (personally I think the execution was awesome but it's still obvious why we got it in the way it was)

It's just sad that valhalla feels in many ways like Darbys Swansong for assassins creed but it feels like he had to compromise a million times over. So much of the game feels brilliant in theory but held back by/between hours of only slightly meaningful missions.

In Unity ,how does the defense rating of clothing relate to the defense skills you can spend with skill points?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 05:14 PM PDT

There's 4 defense skills, each one making Arno more resistant to damage. But each section of clothing, belts and hats and such have an armor rating, and the higher rated outfits the better the defense. So how does this work? Like does the defense skills just stack with the defense afforded by your clothes, or if you have clothes with a high enough defense rating is that as good as the defense skills?

My take on a modern style assassin.

Where did Lucy get Ezio’s Blade?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 10:27 PM PDT

So I was replaying ACII and I just finished it, and I noticed that the Hidden Blade Lucy gives to Desmond looks Identical to Ezio's.

Did Lucy actually get Ezio's blade and if so was it ever explained how? Or is it just a reused asset that they overlooked?

Why aren’t there more spin-off games with different genres? Like the chronicles games?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 04:50 PM PDT

Am i the only one that loves the world off Assassins Creed, but at times feels a bit burnt out on the formula? I would love to have more games like chronicles, that explore different genres and give different angles to the story.

Give me an Assassin's Creed base builder were I establish an Assassin's cell in a new city. Give me a strategy game a la xcom, where we defend that base and reclaim a city and rid it of the filthy templars.

Give me puzzle game, where I explore different isu dungeons and need to collect important artifacts.

    Give me more chronicles games

Give me a survival game where I play a Templar who's base is overrun by those filthy assassins and he needs to escape and survive being hunt down in the wild.

Give me a classic Multiplayer Shooter a la Rainbow six siege in the modern day, Templar vs assassins. Could even do the cash grab and do a Battle Royale (an in-animus training for Templar agents could be the setting).

Give me a movie-game like Heavy Rain or the telltale games.

I'm just spitballing here, but it baffles me that so few spin-off games exist of this franchise. It would be great if we saw a few more different takes the the story than 3rd person action games (even though these are fun too of course)

Just a little Assassin's Creed rant.

    Posted: 22 May 2021 06:19 PM PDT

Ive been replaying the series recently since my city is under lockdown and its made me realize that I dont really enjoy the new games. I enjoyed Origins a little bit, but the lack of verticality for parkour ruined it for me. I did not enjoy odyssey, the story was too long. And I havent even finished valhalla cuz wth I feel like im playing the witcher instead of an Assassin's creed game.

I'm glad the series is alive and new players are coming in everyday and enjoying a series I loved growing up, a series that I poured so many hours of my time in. But where its going is really worrying me. I enjoyed all the games up to AC unity. I know a lot of people dismissed that game because of the bugs but I genuinely think thats the last game where I felt like an assassin.

Templar vs Assassin's is no longer at the front of the story. I loved the narrative of every game from the first all the way to unity. Desmond's story was great, and I know theyre trying to do the same with layla but its not cutting it for me. I dont want another desmond.

I never wanted Assassin's creed to be a witcher like rpg. I know a lot of people are enjoying this direction but the games are becoming so convoluted in its gameplay and what made Assassin's creed for me distinct is no longer there. Parkour, historical setting, stealth(debatable for a lot of people), modern day plot, templar vs assassin's. Its just not there. you can argue that they are but for me theyre all downgraded versions of their previous counterparts.

Anyways this was just a rant about AC. I prolly wont be purchasing any AC games moving forward unless its a cool setting or something. Im getting tired of western settings, I want something from Asia. But I got ghost of tsushima for that I guess (big f*ck you to ubisoft who thought feudal japan wasnt a good setting btw)

If i want my ac fix I'll prolly just replay older games every now and then.

I found Thaletas Helmet after the quest...can I still give it to him?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 11:58 PM PDT

Hey everyone, so I'm replaying Odyssey currently and I'm doing the Mykonos/Delos storyline, I currently haven't romanced either Kyra or Thaletas because whenever I did in other play throughs it never ended well. I just did the quest where Thaletas wants you to destroy 3 Athenian ships but I forgot to look for his dad's helmet. Now I'm onto his next quest where you have to kill the 3 commanders, but I found his dad's helmet...my question is, is it too late to give Thaletas the helmet now that I'm on to the next quest? I tried to look for him at the Spartan beach camp but I couldn't find him. Has this happened to anyone else??

When does the quest "A Little Problem" appear?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 11:46 AM PDT

Hey, so for the life of me I cannot figure out when this quest unlocks. Any and all Google searches and articles related to the quest never specify when, they only just say "talk to Knud in the longhouse to do it", which is entirely unhelpful because Knud does not yet exist in the Ravensthorpe longhouse for me, and I simply wish to find out at what point does Knud actually show up? Is it tied to story progression (I'm fairly early in, only just done Ledecestrescire) or is it random? Just wondering how long I'll have to wait to get my wolf buddy. 😔

The importance of consequences and failure

    Posted: 22 May 2021 05:32 AM PDT

In general, failure in games is important because it forces the player to engage with the mechanics and rules the game set up, therefore the player has to learn to play the game methodically. In other words, the player is forced to be disciplined and thoughtful, which ultimately makes the game way more enjoyable.

To be clear and avoid misunderstandings, I'm NOT comparing this franchise with from software games or anything like that, this has nothing to do with those kind of games. Secondly, this is not a post to bash recent games, since these problems are present in older games too.

Traditionally the games along this series have been quite forgiving, and I understand why: Ubisoft don't want the players to feel frustration when playing their games. Making the games more accesible is always good; however, making the gameplay systems having the depth of a shot and having no consecuences after failing, is not a good design, and makes the games boring.

So, the core gameplay systems in AC are stealth, combat and parkour; I'm going to point out some of the most apparent design mistakes, IMO, and offer some solutions to give the gameplay more depth and therfore more enjoyable:

    • Stealth

Getting detected while being sneaky only leads to an open combat scenario. Which means that the only reason to try the stealth route is to save some time, so there is no real consecuence or punishment for playing sloppy. In the same way, in all games games there are missions, that tell you "recover this item or kill this dude without being detected otherwise we could get in trouble", but being sloppy leads to nothing.

Solution. Remaining undetected and avoiding unnecesary kills while gathering info about a target for example could lead to a way easier assassination mission, with unique assassination opportunities where the target is unguarded and unaware in more accesible zones.

Meanwhile, being sloppy while gathering info, like getting detected and leaving a trail of corpses, could cause on key targests and surroundings an "alerted state" (something similar to ac1 alert after killing a target), so they are aware there is an active assassin in the area, guard presence is reinforced in that area and assassination targets are heavily protected in a fort. Remaining undetected for a while could be a way to revert this state.

As one of the 10th commandments say: assassins are not ruthless killers, they kill but have principles and avoid collateral damage as much as possible. A fleshed out notoriety system, and some non-lethal gadgets would be great for this purpose.

    • Combat

As I said before, getting detected only leads to an open combat scenario where you can still murder everyone with relative ease, moreover, you can enter a restricted area through the front door with weapons unsheathed, facing dozens of soldiers... and you have to fuck up so badly in order to die. Some people may enjoy this power fantasy, but to my eyes, this is dumb, not fun.

Solution. Assassins are skilled fighters, but they are not unbeatable superhumans; fighting one suard should be easy, two or three should be harder but feasible... but engaging in combat when you are surrounded by enemies shoul result in an inevitable death.

Obviously there should be some mechanics to disengage in case you get detected, like traditional smoke bombs, but these tools should be tweaked to not be used as a way to cheese combat, so if you hit a guard while being stunned inside the smoke cloud, the other guards in the smoke are aware of your position again.

    • Parkour / Platforming

There are three problems tied here.

First one.The downgrade in parkour mechanics has been progressive through several games by removing player agency and skill expression. An automated movement system where you just hold forward and sometimes jump is not interactive or fun.

Second one. Being able to climb any surface is not fun either, this directly related to world design. In the same way the rope launcher was introduced in syndicate because buildings were woo tall and streets too wide; a massive open wilderness with cliffs and rocks that you can not climb would be a problem, so they gave the character the ability to climb everything, just for being convenient.

The third problem and consecuence of the other two is fall damage. The punishment in platforming is always falling off and dying. Fall damage has been quite forgiving since the first game, falling from the roofs will hardly kill you unless you are missing health upgrades. Lately, this problem has been more pronounced, since you can fall from an absurd height and walk away like nothing. Again, this problem is directly related to world design, for the sake of convenience.

Solution to first problem. Cancel animations, cacth ledge and manual jump (this includes back and side ejects) were the three big actions that gave player control, these have to return somehow. Give the player control over the character actions, let the player think about how to approach a platforming section in order to reach a point that at first glance look unreachable. In other words, let the player engage with the system and discover new moves.

Solution to second problem. Reducing the map size, having a more compact but dense map and reaching a good balance between urban environments and wilderness , where the player looks around and discover available routes that allows to reach a higher advantageous positions...

Solution to third problem. Very simple, let the player die when falling off from certain (and reasonable) heights and introduce a maunal rolling mechanic to avoid fall damage from reasonable heights.

TL;DR - Games could be more fun and engaging by having deeper gameplay systems and letting the player fail for playing sloppily and not respecting the game rules, but at the same time, this does not imply that the game has to be harder.

I've tried to divide sections clearly to make it easier to read; thanks for taking the time to read and of course feel free to give your insight below.

In AC:Origins, how many Hunter Master Skill points needed for 1 Hit Kills...?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 08:53 PM PDT

I'll explain here: I love using bows in the game, (Hunter and Predator bows ftw, light bows with health on hit for boss fights) but I feel like the Hunter Master Skill isn't adding to the damage. I'm at 25 skill points in that skill, 5 on Warrior, and 0 on seer (screw seer). What level do I need to have my hunter master skill to do a 1 hit kill (body shot) with a maxed predator bow? And just out of curiosity, how many for a 1 hit kill with a light bow?

How would the community feel about a invasion mechanic?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 08:49 PM PDT

How would you feel about a system like in Watch_Dogs? A random player appearing in your AC game. There could even have player assassin contracts. A player accepts a pigeon coop contract to hunt a Templar and is plopped into another players game. The host player is informed that a assassin hunter is on their trail. Imo I think this system would be a great addition if they bring back co-op

Just played my first AC game and here are my thoughts

    Posted: 22 May 2021 12:57 PM PDT

Recently AC Origins was on sale and with little knowledge of the game, I decided to pick it up, and well after finishing it I feel like discussing what I enjoyed about the game and what I didn't. (idk if this subreddit minds posts like this but oh well).

Main Quest/Story: The opening of the game is quite poor in my opinion, presenting Bayek as disinteresting and dull, however, the more I played the more you start to appreciate his character, and after you start uncovering the Order of the Ancients. While on the topic of the Order of Ancients, killing some deemed to be more satisfying and rewarding than others, for instance, The Sacrab and The Hippo are great examples of this and how their quests felt a bit rushed. Going back to Bayek, his relationship with Aya is complex, which makes it so special and even though I didn't like her character much, their desire to avenge their son's death (albeit in different approaches) is enjoyable to experience. Others characters within the game never seemed to make a strong impression on me (with Cleopatra being an expectation) and I disliked how Julius Caeser was introduced and as someone who loves a game being historically accurate, his and Cleopatra's character are far from that. As I'm writing this off the top of my head I can't quite think of anything else rn but I'd happily like to be reminded of other key parts of the plot.

Side Quests: Now where do I start with the side quests... Well for starters, I absolutely hate them. Most feel repetitive and they struggled to grab my interest where it got to the point were I'd be skipping the cutscenes. From the countless sidequests I played, I can only think of 2-3 that I enjoyed and found interesting and that's a damn shame because the way the game is structured you are forced to grind them out for XP just to progress in the story. Now many may argue that most open-world games you need to play the side quests to progress in the game but the fact is with this game fighting an enemy that is 3-4 levels above you will just lead to death so you either grind out the side quests or do what Ubisoft want's you to do, which is buy Helix points.

World/Map: I feel like I just ranted about the game for quite a while, but for the world and map in this game, I have little to no complaints. Exploring Ancient Egypt was one of the most fun things I've ever done in this game. From the beginning at Siwa, to first seeing the riches of Alexandria, then witnessing the poverty of Memphis and the racism that runs through Krokodilopolis, I can come to the conclusion that AC:Origins might have some of the best cities I have played in a video game. And I nearly forgot, PYRAMIDSSSS

Combat/Weapon System: The combat system is well very simplified. For the game it's trying to be, you'd expect a roll mechanic and more customisation for weapons but that never comes, and in my opinion for the scope of this game it's a little embarrassing how simple and basic the combat and weapon system are.

Well, I think I'm done with my mini-review of the game and I'm not someone who typically likes to rank a game out of 10 so I won't. But did I enjoy played Origins? Yes, I did. Do I still think the game falls short in quite a few aspects? Absolutely. Would I be willing to play another AC game similar to this again in the future? I don't think so, I had fun but I don't believe another 40 hours of my time should be spent playing a game like this. Now, that's all I have to say and if you read all of this, thank you and if you agree/disagree with anything I said, I'd happily discuss it. :)
