Assassin's Creed 1 is still good game

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 05:02 PM PST

It was my first playthrough and I've never thought it could be amusing to play it. Doing collectibles(flags) and saving people was really boring, but but the basis of the main story is pretty good. 100% synchrozination is only for strong fans :). Amazing game, for 2007!!!

    What do you think?

Assassin's Creed Unity and Syndicate were very underappreciated.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 03:41 AM PST

Let me just begin with this: I understand that opinion is a personal preference and u cannot change someone's opinion just like that, but I am here to kind of ask all of u, do we still hate these games so much? I am a lifelong fan of the franchise, and by far my favourite games are the most hated ones. Other fans seem to address technical things and not the things in gameplay or the story. Also, especially Unity and Syndicate were a step back to the original vibe where assassinations mattered and were fun to execute. So many fans want AC to go back to more stealthy gameplay but don't give a real shot to games that did just that. Fans of the franchise let technical difficulties overshadow substancial stuff in these games, especially Unity.

Edit: I love how some people have actually resorted to the "This is the 1000th Unity/Syndicate appreciation post this week". And it is true. But listen. We do this only for the sake of other people trying things that are against their behavior atm. We preach Unity like you should do to human rights too. Preach what you love babes, keep on the Unity appreciation posts!

Ps. Just try to add your own views pleeeeeeaaaasssse!

What do you do when you’re exploring in Valhalla?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:06 PM PST

In odyssey, you could hunt mercenaries, do side quest chains, some of the quests to kill cultists were pretty awesome (like the Mykonos and Obsidian Island quests), take part in naval combat, hunt mythical beasts, take part in conquest battles, do legendary gear quests, etc. I've spent like ten hours in England and I find there's little to do other than raid and collect chests. Will more activities open up as I play through the main quest? I like the World Events, they're better than the hundreds of boring fetch and kill quests in Odyssey, but they're worse than a lot of great side quests. IMO, I wish they hadn't gone in the direction of completely getting rid of them.

A capeless hood would be nice

The clipping of the cape on eivor especially male eivor really annoying so a hood without a cape would be nice to have or the option to hid the cape without hiding the hood

Sharing the EVA Foam Tomahawk I built!

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:08 AM PST

Just started my second play through of Origin. Wow, what a game it is.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 09:48 PM PST

First time I played Origins was almost straight after its release. Then came Odyssey, followed by Valhalla.

When playing Odyssey, I somehow always felt it was grander, with many choices to be made and play styles to try.

Then came Valhalla, and even though it introduced a very cool setting and some great features, I personally had a hard time to really enjoy it for several hours a day.

Yesterday, I reinstalled Origins, just for fun, and choose to try a second play through. Glad I did, cause WOW. The character, and ancient setting were so much better than Odyssey (sure Kassandra was nice, but Bayek...) and Valhalla. Personally, I just feel some of the world's details and the fact that there is a limited focus on endless crafting are allowing me to better enjoy the overall journey.

I just played the Hundred Years’ War mission in Ac Unity and shit it would be cool to have a game set in that.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 12:43 PM PST

It's such a cool setting and the short bit we got to see was amazing, with knights, castles, cities, swords, all that stuff. Of course it would be best if they went back to an upgraded version of Unity's engine, art style and systems. What do you think?

The fanbase need to stop ruining the potential that new games bring to the picture

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 02:53 PM PST

Following the criticism of this video: https://youtu.be/W6ztv7L6vjY

I think the assassins creed fan base is destroying itself, we didnt see the potential of unity and syndicate and ubi as a corpo was indeed forced to ditch the formula. What I do not like about the RPG triology is the disregard they have on a lot of cool features on the old games that added much depth, however i love Origins as one of the best games of the franchise, Odyssey a fun experience and Valhalla a balance of both, and now here comes another over the top criticism.

Here it is criticized that Valhalla has less replayability compared to the Odyssey brand, to which I agree with a lot of points, however what is a big nono for me is that it is said that odyssey had so many builds and so many things to do etc etc, to which i agree, but at what cost?-the brands Identity, the Assassins Creed Identity. Now valhalla is trying to restore that, which i respect even tho its far from what i truly want, however when talking about an Assassins creed game, Stealth and Assassination Mechanics combined with the Parkour(which is very much lacking in style in the later games) should be the main mechanics that should feel better and help the player best at traversing the world, but giving people the choice to be whatever they want feels more like a witcher or cyberpunk. Moreover you cannot give a person the choice and design levels that have no risk to it or dont have much different content. I feel that valhalla doesnt have the proper content befitting every style and diversity. For example Origins had a great balance in the open world and design, not too complex but diverse, it had fortresses which i would gladly traverse stealthily rather than open combat due to the new RPG elements making it harder, whereas the game would pretty much force you itself in situations where you had no choice in stealth, and that to me is preservation of identity gameplaywise, because stealth is the main choice of traverse in the level as it is the most rewarding experience compared to the annoying slow hard combat, and you had a clear choice, if you could take em on combat do it, if you dont go to stealth, and this choice has always been with the games, what i wouldnt like was if stealth was just not necessary at all and Odyssey encouraged it through builds, where if you choose a non stealth build you would feel always the better choice was combat, which takes you further from the games identity(amongst other things). I accept that valhalla is just okay compared to my expectations but you have to admit and respect the improvements it did over its predecessor, otherwise if you dont, more games like odyssey will come up as AsSaSsInS cReEd.

Moreover it mentions replayability and i feel, personally, that a good game does not need replayability, as the only replayability you had in witcher 3 was to start the game over or just change up your skill set but once you did one quest that was it, no more of the same dish, new content is always welcomed, but never copy paste, and the roadmap shows promise for valhalla, but the ingame Odyssey replayable things just feel dull after a while, just like the nemesis system in the shadow of mordor which was pretty impressive yet got boring after a while due to no end of it. I feel as every good thing should have a proper ending and its only replayability is to uninstall the game and replay it after 1 year or so just like i did with the witcher, and a game worth 60bucks with 100 hours of content and more to come does not seem like a big disappointment to me. I think that the changes that were made to the RPG are on a good start, they are not great, but they are on a good start and we should not praise odyssey for risiking the identity of the brand for good gameplay, we should praise valhalla for trying to make the best of a certain balance and appreciate the potential, not like we did with unity.

I would also like to mention that it is greedy to always want more and more and more, cuz thats how the fan base is right now at the moment, more this more that, we all know that ubi wants money and will satisfy whoever opens their mouth about one of their products, but if you want more all the time even tho you have a 100 hour long game ubi wont give you a good game as their tactic is pull out a new game every year and once in a while every 2 years, therefore more cannot fit the deadline and ubi needs the money so it wont obey, it will either fit more and make it low quality or just do less and do it better and maybe add along the way with these roadmaps which i think are great. Look at hellblade, it is an indie game and it fullfills its purpose perfectly, look at brotherhood, it had less and it was very polished for its development time. And therefore more replayability could result to ubi getting back to the grind systems, making them important. See we complained about the grind being too hard and annoying which it was, yet now that we have something that does not need it we are complaining about it again. See we need to make up our minds otherwise they will ditch everything good that came wih these games too and someday ditch the entire brand.

In conclusion, make up your mind and think about balancing things out as everything comes at the cost of something when you speak out about constructive criticism as it affects the brand and the games that are to come. Ubi is a shitty company with a beloved brand on their hands, do not give them reason to take everything good thats left. I think that what we got in valhalla was good enough, even if it was at the cost of replayability.

To JorRaptor I have nothing against what you did, you were on point and objective on what you said, but what I saw in the comments of the video of people praising odyssey as the better game just because of replayability really made me think what the actual fuck are these people doing again and again.

[SPOILERS] How to improve the Valhalla Formula for the next game

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 08:00 AM PST

With Valhalla now several months behind us, the general consensus seems to be that while not a bad game and has interesting moments, it had an overly bloated story and lacked the assassin's creed elements people desired, and those that were in the game felt half baked. While it told an Assassin's Creed story through and through, it lacked the assassin fantasy, so today I wanted to discuss things that need to be done for the next game, be it Champions or China.

    1. We need to play as an actual assassin no matter what in the next game, for the majority or all of the game. The past 3 games you weren't an assassin at all (except Origins DLC), and before that Black Flag and Rogue have you play as a Pirate or Templar for the majority of the story. This means of the past 7 games that launched since the Xbox One and PS4 launched, you haven't played as an assassin for all or the majority of the game for 5 of those games. That's 42% of the series as a whole! Nearly half of all the games NAMED Assassin's Creed you don't play as what the box tells you! This is unacceptable, and we need to be an assassin. We need the Assassin iconography like the hood, hidden blade, targets, and importantly we need conspiracy back! Valhalla did far better than origins or Odyssey did on this front, but still felt so lacking at delivering that Assassin fantasy.
    2. It appears the choice between male and female characters is here to stay, and allegedly Darby (the narrative director of Valhalla) felt pressured from up above to have such a long and drawn out story to fit the size and scale of the map, likely due to criticism of Origins and odyssey not using much of the map. While the idea to then make the long story feel like a Viking Saga was interesting, for the majority of us, it failed to capture our attention all the way through, largely because of the near 100-hour length. If this idea that the game has to be a certain story length to utilize the world is true, then rather than having one drawn-out story, I'd propose two shorter stories. When you pick Male or Female, you pick one of two canon characters who have weaving and intersecting stories that explore mostly different parts of the world. This would be extra work in some areas, but it would not double the work. Rather than having 1 story that's 100 hours, you have 2 stories that are 40 hours. Side quests can be split evenly among the two characters, or they don't even have to be, same with PoI. They can be easily written off as the DNA in the animus merging due to poor recall of the events, and thus both characters can do the same side quests, but maintain different stories. There's plenty of different ways to do this, and it's far from impossible, having been done in 2016 for Dishonored 2. While not every mechanic from other games works well in another series, if we're forcing gender choice, there are better ways to do it.
    3. Stealth needs love for the next game for sure. In Valhalla, it mostly felt unviable. For a period around launch, killing all the guards and starting a raid would respawn the guards, there was no option for stealthy raids despite having been an actual tactic used by Vikings, social stealth felt inconsistent due to strange guard noticing and near-instant guard detection. Bringing back social stealth was a good move, but we need it to be more consistent with guards, have moving social groups, maintain the ability to enter into blending animations. Guard placement also makes it nearly impossible to get by unseen, and killing guards will always alert others due to proximity and thus inability to attract with arrows or whistles. However, social stealth shouldn't just be used as a substitute for bushes to get closer to guards to kill them, but provide an opportunity to reach targets and locations without killing anyone, and truly adopting the blade in the crowd fantasy. TL;DR: Combine AC1, Ac2, and Valhalla stealth and give better AI with more intuitive and stealth-focused detection.
    4. Cities used to be the heart of Assassin's Creed, placing the majority of the game in a city and having the ability to travel the entire city on the rooftops. Since Origins, that hasn't been possible. Valhalla did better with parkour than Odyssey or Origins, having only a handful of unique parkour routes that allow for fun tricks. Though most of the time they're simple routes for catching papers in the wind, and can't be used for travel. Since Unity, a grid system has been employed for parkour, and it often makes Eivor snap to objects strangely. A common issue related to this is where Eivor will jump down onto a ledge rather than onto the next pole or roof. While this can definitely be partially user error, it remains a system error as well, feeling clunky and like we're not in control. This issue combined with the lack of back eject, side eject, and animation canceling while not even having parkour routes in the cities means AC1 and AC2 can often be seen as having better parkour than Valhalla. A larger focus on dense urban environments, with level design that facilitates parkour from both a vertical and horizontal perspective, needs to be fundamental.
    5. Finally, we need to have some more set-piece variety. Valhalla has one major set-piece at the end where you enter the Yggdrasil Temple, which is better than odyssey which I often blast as having no true set pieces. I think the best definition of a set piece is a moment or section of gameplay that delivers a unique experience. So this can be taking you to a unique area or introducing unique mechanics. Think about Ezio going to the Vatican, the Flying Machine, Leonardo's War Machines, the Siege of Viana, or the Tomb missions. Odyssey uses the conquest battles as set pieces, and after doing them for regular gameplay and several story moments, they no longer are unique. The same happens with Valhalla using raiding-like mechanics and a battering ram and calling it assaults, then making us assault like 15 different castles and forts. It was cool the first few times, but by Arc 15 when you've done this exact same setup 14 times before, it feels boring and stale. Like if the next game is the hundred years war, we should only participate in Poitiers and Calais for example. Let the one or two big battles stand out. Give us more one-offs like visiting London during the Black Plague, have a flying machine, use the Apple of Saint-Denis to control rats, and spread the plague, just something more than generic big battles.

There's a ton more that I can go into, but these are just a few ideas to improve on Valhalla. Ultimately, the series needs to be re-evaluated and systems need to be made deeper, not wider. But that's a conversation for next week.

A proposal for newer AC style fans and older AC style fans.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 06:50 PM PST

Fuck the toxicity and feuds, the comparison between characters, leading to negativity. Every character in the series has been memorable somehow to everyone. Comparing them on a list isn't as productive as playing as them.

So newer fans who have played only Odyssey and Valhalla, boot up the Ezio Trilogy, Black Flag, Unity, heck even AC1. You'll understand why old time fans adore them so much.

Old time peeps, try a hand at Origins and the other new titles. As one among you, I still enjoyed both Origins and Odyssey, and I hope you will.

Shield breaker in AC Odyssey - How can I make this ability more consistent on opponents?

Would you be opposed to permanent companion characters?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 10:11 PM PST

Most AC protagonists are lone wolves because this is the nature of open-world games. This has the downside of making each game feel weirdly isolating as you only interact with characters in cutscenes and then go off to do your own thing.

But what If we had 2 or 3 named characters who are always at your side for the whole game? Something like the party systems in old Bioware games. Fully fleshed out characters with backstories who are involved in the entire main story.

I had the idea because Eivor has a whole crew of nameless Viking dudes who just sit in the boat. It makes it impossible to have a story like the Last Kingdom where Uhtred has a small following of loyal crew who are very involved in the story.

Gameplay-wise it could be something like the brotherhood feature from uh.. Brotherhood. But more balanced around multiple characters. AC3 let you have named followers but like a lot of things in AC3 it could have been executed better.

New to the franchise, struggling with combat

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 02:33 PM PST

im super new to the assassins creed franchise and im loving it so far, but im finding that i really struggle with the combat. i usually just end up spamming the attack/deflect/grab/move buttons until i manage to finally finish whatever it is i need to do. it makes a lot of the end mission type things extremely frustrating, especially when i get 10 people thrown at me when i can barely candle 4

if any of you have any personal tips or links to resources that helped you get better at combat i would super appreciate it!!

i play on pc with keyboard and mouse, and so far ive been playing ac1 and 2 because my older computer can handle them better :')).

ive seen stuff about how theres more combat in newer games, and seeing as im enjoying the franchise so far id love to get better before it becomes too much of a problem :)

    What makes the 'ideal' character?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 01:46 PM PST

Something which always ends up being a topic of debate with every AC release is the 'quality' of a character - pretty much ever since the Ezio Trilogy came to an end (with the exception of Edward, who I think we can agree the vast majority enjoyed playing as).

So I was curious about what traits and character perks people look for, to find a protagonist particularly engaging? What did past characters have - or didn't - which you enjoyed?

*SPOILER WARNING* Ubisofts biggest mistake in valhallas marketing, was saying both genders are canon

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 09:09 AM PST

I wanna start of this post by saying this isnt meant as an attack towards players that prefer male eivor. I myself prefer playing as male eivor and will probably do so in every replay of this game. (Ive played my first run with let the animus choose and am currently on my second playthrough and I picked male)

Every day while browsing on this subreddit, I see at least one person saying that both genders are canon in the sense that you can choose whether the historical person Eivor Varindottir, was male or female. I also see alot of people referring to eivor as "him/he". Both of these things are wrong. Eivor was, historically speaking, a woman.

This minconception mainly comes from the fact that darby and ashraf, leading up to the game, said multiple times that both genders are canon. And in the end they didnt lie when they said that. People just misunderstood them.

When it comes to AC, we never had to deal with canon genders pre odyssey. When people refer to odyssey most people nowadays know that kassandra is the canon protagonist and they know alexios is canonically deimos. Odysseys approach of canon gender was completly different from valhalla. In odyssey you basically change the past by picking a gender. (As is proven by the fact that Alexios appears in the modern day if you chose to play as him )

The idea in valhalla was that canonically, the animus could have represented eivor as a female aswell as a male. That is because Eivor is the reincarnation of odin, a male isu. The animus detects a female, aswell as a male memory stream within eivor (because she has odins dna within her) and therefore canonically lets layla choose whether the animus simulates eivor as a man or woman. Both versions of the simulation are canon however what actually happened in the past was that eivor was a woman

And no this isnt just a fan theory, as some people seem to think, this has been confirmed multiple times on twitter, by narrative director darby mcdevitt (the person that started the whole canon gender debate) and since thats for some reason not enough proof for some of you. Here are some facts from the game itself:

-Eivor is literally a female only name

    • She is referred to as varinsdottir in the letter from aelfred and again this has been confirmed to not be a bug. It is intentional

    • Basim always sees her as a woman no matter what gender you picked in game, as is confirmed by the bonfire scenes where he smiles at eivor when you play as him

-lastly leading up to the game it was also stated that the "let the animus decide" option is the canon option to play the game and when you pick that option you play the whole game as female, except for the asgard and jotunheim arcs where eivor relives odins memories

AC storyline in a hand full of games

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 06:24 PM PST

If I was to complete 5 AC games what 5 would I play to get most of the main storyline?

I have played some here and there

I have played ac1 on release AC2 and brotherhood on release AC black flag And origins

And about an hour on the rest of them I own all the games I just don't have the patience to play through all of them

I think I'll start with AC2 and brotherhood.

I'm playing revelations now and the gameplay is not holding me 🤔 I feel like the story is important but I don't like the feel of the game!

What 5 games are must plays? What games can I skip and not miss too much?

Getting bored of the series. suggestion?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 10:04 PM PST

Hi all, since covid started and I was able to finish my work at home early everyday with some time to spare, I made a mission to catch up on old Assassins Creed games that I never got to play before.

I started from AC2 as it seemed a popular opinion to skip AC1 due to boring/repetitive game mechanics. I was blown away by AC2 and couldn't believe it was over 10 year old game graphically and gameplay wise. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I tried to complete all the side quests and finding all the treasure boxes, but kinda gave up being a completionist after realizing that I don't enjoy going all over the maps finding every feathers.

I finished the Brotherhood and liked it (though not as much as AC2) and got right onto Revelations. I actually got bored about 2/3 into Revelations but just followed the main quest line and forced myself to finish it (couldn't wait to just be done with it). I was going to take a little break, but ended up starting the Black Flag (I wanted to do AC3 remastered but only BF was on Steam sale at that time).

I initially didn't like AC4 Black Flag but half way through it, I found myself enjoying the game once again.

When AC3 and AC5 Unity were on sale, I ended up picking up both. I was averaging about 2 weeks per game and perhaps back to back was a bit much.

I started AC3 about 2 weeks ago with 3 more sequence to go but I am bored out of my mind at this point. I am just wondering if I am feeling burned out or what.

The thought of playing Unity after this is just dreadful. But I was told there's quite a bit of game mechanics/combat system change from Unity so I am thinking maybe it's worth it to continue.

Does it get better after AC3/AC4? Should I take a break from the series and go play something else for awhile?

What does everyone think of an AC set in ancient Mayan/Aztec times?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 10:04 PM PST

So, I was thinking of possible future AC plots/eras they could explore, and I thought of one that I personally feel is underrepresented. That era to me would be ancient Mayan/Aztec empires. I've expressed this idea previously on an Assassin's Creed post on FB, but didn't exactly get the feedback I'd hoped for. Someone said how they'd be too primitive, (which they definitely were not!) and watching sacrifices would be too disturbing.. (which one could just not do those missions/skip them)

But honestly, I think there's a lot of history they could play with there, and I can't remember at the very moment, but I believe they dabbled a bit in it in Black Flag, albeit very briefly.

    What do you think?

[ACV SPOILERS] About that Odin Sight/Eagle Vision....

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 07:05 AM PST

Am i fatally misunderstanding something in the Game, or is the Moment (shown through the mythological veil) where Odin sacrifices his Eye for the access to the mead indeed how humans got the ability of Eagle Vision/Odin Sight.

Yeah, the mythological veil, but how i understand it, the well of mimir seems to represent the human genetic pool, and a sample of it was necessary for Odin and his gang to be reborn at a later stage. Humans are created by the Isu after all, thus the existence of a quite literal "genetic pool/well" seems at least thinkable.

And when asked for the price of permission to get a genetic sample for his own needs, Odin had to leave something in return, thus giving up his eye, throwing it in the genetic mix and thus enhancing humanities genetic pool by the ability to have Odin Sight. Depending of how much (if any) Isu DNA a human has in itself it can be available from the get go or acchieved through training by any human, as Kidd explained in AC4.

Or am i just interpreting too much into that specific scene?

I still can't complete Challenge 8 on the DS Game AC 2: Discovery after years of trying

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 09:44 AM PST

I booted my DS yesterday after a year and scrolling to games I remembered that I still have AC 2: Discovery on my 100% pending list. Challenge 8 is the only thing preventing me from getting 100%, not that it bothers me to much but it's crazy how it seems impossible to achieve. The only video completing it is this one and I roll 3 times like in the video but I never get the boost to reach the other platform. Has anyone else been through this like me??
