Why do you guys act like the old games had such deep stealth mechanics? Posted: 01 May 2020 11:34 AM PDT The stealth in the old games was the bare minimum compared to Hitman or Splinter Cell The social stealth was cool but it lacked depth The games didn't even have a crouch until Unity People speak so highly of Unity but that game doesn't even have the option to whistle or hide bodies which the new games have I always felt like Assassin's Creed game were action adventure games with light stealth yet this sub makes it like the old ones were some premium stealth games [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 May 2020 09:05 AM PDT Before you think this is a shitpost rant, please have a read through. I started the game franchise with Black Flag, and played every single one afterwards. My playstyle is complete stealth. I scout the entire fort, pick off enemies one by one and only do silent stealth kills. Or if I'm really feeling up to the challenge, only silent assinate the caption, loot and get out. I had a lot more fun playing this way than just barging through the front door and killing everyone. This worked only up to Syndicate. Origins introduced a new RPG skills leveling system which killed the complete stealth. Now, before you tell me to level up more to match the enemies' level, let me tell you I know how the level system works. Normal "weak" enemies, sure, they can be easily killed by a stealth move. But "captains" or "leaders"? Oh boy.. a giant spear through their frikken neck only tickles them and forces me into a full-on fight. Even a sleeping captain that just had a blade through their heart wakes up as if it was just a mosquito bite. In Odyssey, my skill tree is based on Assassination and Hunter (because that's my play style - silent kills). Most of the enemies are easy to deal with but when it comes to captains or leaders, it's a nightmare. I am always forced into a 1v1 duel battle with them after impaling a spear through their brains and pulling it out the other side. Since I have very little points allocated to the Warrior tree, the fight takes unnecessarily too long and don't get me started with the Nation Battle. (Yes, I know I can still use the bow and arrow and the poison skill that reduces enemy armour etc but that's besides the main point). All in all, it's very difficult to enjoy the game using the playstyle I loved to use for all the previous games, because it simply doesn't work. In the new Assassin's Creed games, can you please bring back the 1 shot stealth skill? Instead of having Assassination skill tree that does "20% increased assassination damage", maybe be more tailored around "stealth", such as becoming more difficult for enemies to detect you, sneak around faster per skill level etc. However, this should not mean that I can kill a level 50 target at level 1. Give higher level enemies a significantly higher ability to detect you so I won't be able to sneak up to a level 50 captain at level 1. Remove ranged assassination bullcrap (the one where you throw your spear at a ranged target, then teleport next to the target and pull the spear out for an assassination kill). Also, please keep stealth kill animation as minimal as possible. The animation on Odyssey is just cringe. Sneak up behind, dagger through the heart, trip them over, another dagger puncture, slicing motion, neck twist... all of that for a single stealth kill? Really? It's way too excessive, to say the least. The whole point is stealth, not rambo. Please just leave that for the "Warrior" kill cam animation. Please just leave stealth kills to a quick blade to the heart then back to sneaking position. Not everything has to be a super cool flashy wombo combo move. Some of you will hate this post and downvote this with all the alt accounts you have. Some of you will feel like I am speaking your mind. Regardless, let's keep discussions civil. If you have better ideas or ideas to add on top, please speak your mind, as I have spoken mine on what I personally feel the game is lacking or aspects I don't like. Afterall, we're the ones buying and playing their games. Thank you for reading. [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 May 2020 07:36 PM PDT The biggest issue IMO with the new RPG-like Asassin's Creed is not the fact itself that they have these types of RPG elements; it's that they chose to use this insane exponential level scaling, as if it were an MMORPG. Exponential scaling means that as soon as the enemy is a couple levels higher than you, you stand absolutely no chance because their health and damage will be such an extreme magnitude higher than yours. Look at Shadow of War, for example. It is one of my favorite games of all time, and it vastly expanded the RPG systems compared to it's predecessor Shadow of Mordor too. And yet it did not subtract from the gameplay and lead the players to feel the franchise has lost its identity and become too much of an RPG, even though arguably, there was a bigger jump in RPG elements from Shadow of Mordor to War than say from Unity to Origins. Why is that? Shadow of War has gear and attributes too, it has player and enemy levels. But even at level 1, you could kill a level 60 Orc. It won't be easy, because they'll probably oneshot you and you need maybe 8-10 executions on him. But those are still reasonable, doable numbers. Like, a level 1 sword in Shadow of War has 30 damage, a lvl12 sword in Shadow of War would have 42 damage, a level 25 would have 56 and the max level (65) would be 150 damage. So essentially at max level you're doing five times as much damage as level 1. Comparatively, in Odyssey, you start with like 22 Warrior damage... And end up in a range of several thousands. So you don't end up doing 3 times as much damage, but well over 300 times as much. Another consequence of this exponential scaling is of course how quickly you need to replace your gear. 3-4 levels later, and that armor you really like with good assassin perks on it? Yeah, it now has 80% less armor rating than the new items you find, so unless you wanna be oneshot you gotta replace it. This also leads to the fact that it's just not really "worth it" to make an actual build until you're max level - and I personally finished Odyssey's main story long before that, and the side content was not interesting enough to keep me playing. Because of the few pieces of information we have about Valhalla, however, I am hopeful that they went with a more sensible scaling system á la Shadow of War this time around. Since every piece of gear is supposed to be unique again (Like in Origins), and that you can use them from beginning to end. [link] [comments]
There will be more than 25 different types of enemies, each with a special ability. Posted: 01 May 2020 12:37 PM PDT Probably the most exciting news on AC Valhalla, 'cause the bestiary in the AC has never been the highlight of the series. Confirmed by Julien Laferrière, Valhalla's lead producer. [link] [comments]
Eivor may be the one to ‘create’ social stealth. Posted: 01 May 2020 01:45 PM PDT Anyone else think that Eivor may be the one to create the 'hide in plain sight' tenant? Seeing as prior to this the hidden ones never really used social stealth (as far as we know), the fact that it's making a comeback could suggest that this is also the game where we see its birth. It would be quite interesting how the loudest warrior ends up being the most silent, perhaps this is what Ubisoft is aiming at. [link] [comments]

[SPOILERS] A Comprehensive Analysis of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s info dump Posted: 01 May 2020 05:23 AM PDT Over the past 24 hours, Assassin's Creed Valhalla has had a CGI trailer officially released which has since brought on a colossal dump on information and speculation. This post will be succinctly rounding up the big information, along with having an in-depth analysis of several gameplay screenshots and the CGI trailer. Please be aware that the official news comes from Ubisoft interviews, trailers, and websites. Due to the volatile nature of game design, some of this could change in the coming months. Primary news Sources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0Fr3cS3MtY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_nb_YECQoQ&feature=youtu.be https://www.gameinformer.com/2020/04/30/25-things-weve-learned-about-assassins-creed-valhalla https://www.ubisoft.com/en-gb/game/assassins-creed/valhalla/news-updates OFFICIAL NEWS: General
Gameplay
Story
CGI TRAILER ANALYSIS There's not a lot that hasn't been said about this, so I'll keep it brief. We see anachronistic architecture for Vikings and Saxons. We see Alfred (Spelled Aelfred) and a potential Templar behind him that I speculated may be Aethelwold, son of King Aethelred I of Wessex who was Alfred's brother. When Aethelred died the throne passed over Aethelred's heir, to the chagrin of Aethelwold, to his brother Alfred. When Alfred died in 899, Aethelwold tried to usurp the throne from Alfred's son Edward. I wouldn't put it past Aethelwold for being a Templar who was using Alfred. We see English rolling hills, harsh nordic environments, sailing across the sea, and so on. During the battle sequence we see Eivor switch weapons a few times to dual axes and so on indicating the weapon system, and even see Eivor throw an ax like one of their skills is. There's also some brutality and dismemberment like the new combat overhaul introduces. The fight with what Ashraf called a "ringleader" shows off tougher enemies and fights, and the enemy weakness system that is the biggest departure from previous combat systems. We also see some Norse religious imagery of Odin on the battlefield, a raven flying overhead, and prayers to Odin, which again shows there's likely a story-related element to this. Last big thing was that we see Eivor explicitly not kill innocents, perhaps implying the raids he conducts are more focused than other Viking raids we may see or hear about. SCREENSHOT ANALYSIS I won't be going over every screenshot, just the ones I can get decent info from. The first screenshot is this one: Here we see Eivor blowing a horn during a raid on a town. The shields have a small bird on them which was the symbol for Sussex, a small kingdom in the southeast of England that was overtaken by Wessex. It actually is a key site for several historical events, such as the Battle of Badon Hill where King Arthur allegedly killed 900 men in a single day, the Battle of Hastings in 1066, and houses a few cities, including Swindon and Chichester. The cathedral that's on fire looks somewhat similar to Chichester's cathedral, though obvious artistic license and mild changes due to differences in architecture styles throughout time when buildings could be renovated. If this is Chichester, the first house we see on the left looks to be 1 story tall, while a building in front of the church appears to be 2 stories tall, again showing off the mildly anachronistic architecture. Next, we have: This is just a shot of Norway with the Aurora Borealis above, which may imply northern Norway, but it may not with the liberties being taken. Once again we see a Viking temple which, while beautiful and looks okay for parkour, is historically inaccurate. This is an interesting one: Here we see the female Eivor leading a longship in stormy waters to a fort or castle on a high cliff island. Above the head is what it likely your bird. Here it does look a bit like an eagle, but other images look like a raven. Perhaps we can customize it's skin too. Next to the ship, we see some Puffins on the rocks, which are common birds throughout the British isles. The really interesting part is the fort though. Examining the image we can see a light source coming through the clouds at the top right of the image, and this is illuminating the right sight of the fort and casting a shadow to the left. The sun is obviously east-west facing, and as a result, if the right side of the fort is the part being illuminated the most, it too is likely east-west facing. This actually narrows down a lot, because while England's southern coast has the famous white Dover cliffs and is a bit rockier, the east coast is far lower, and back in the 9th century was a lot of swamplands and alluvium as well, But since the light source shows that the castle is likely east-west while the character comes North-South, we're most likely looking at the east or west coast of England. Then I found Dunnottar Castle, which is on a similar island-like outcropping, is fairly famous, has the right east-west alignment as well. See a picture here. The problem with this castle is that it's not in England, it's on the coast of northern Scotland. Do not take this as Scotland being confirmed. Historical liberties can always be taken. Inb4 these aren't the same because Valhalla image has an arch and the real-life image has a natural path down, obviously, this can happen over the course of 1200 years due to mudslides, rock slides, torrential downpours, and different weather patterns than erode the earth and soils. This appears to be England in the autumn, though I believe it's actually a regional boundary. See, Southern England is fairly flat with a few rolling hills. Even middle to northern England is pretty flat and the hills are not craggy (rocky and unsmooth) until we enter the Strathclyde or wales. So with that in mind, we're likely on the border of Scotland or Wales. Once again we're facing the sun which implies we're facing west (or east), and we a large number of mountains to the west and north. I do believe this is North as well because of the snow. Eivor is standing on Autumn like mountains at a similar height an a few hundred meters away is snow. Similar biomes were separated based on regions in Origins and odyssey and help make every area feel unique. At the foot of the white mountains, we can make out some colors and shapes of wooden buildings similar in color to the buildings near us, implying this more mountainous area is playable. This is the final image I'll be analyzing for now: https://www.unilad.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Assassins-Creed-Valhalla-Screenshot-4.jpg Here we see a castle or fortified town on a mountain, surrounded by tall craggy mountains next to a large body of water. I'll be honest, I went through a lot of encyclopedias to see if I could find a castle similar to this in England and the best I got was Dover castle or Rochester Castle, both of which are right next to the sea and don't have mountains like that. Then I looked at Scotland and I have two decent contenders. The first is Urquhart Castle which is a castle on a hill/ outcropping on Loch Ness. The Loch itself is surrounded by tall mountains and the castle dips down fairly lower requiring a bridge to enter it, where a moat or medieval river could have run through like we see in the image. This also would allow a large amount of water to be surrounded by mountains. And once again, this image really shows off tall craggy mountains, that really isn't in Southern England where Ashraf has explicitly said the game will take place. The most rugged place like this in modern England is the Lake District in what was Cumbria and Strathclyde and not controlled by the Saxons at the time. What was controlled by the Saxons was Edinburgh, which has a castle on a tall cliff like this, is near a large bay, but the bay has mountains that come down a bit so there's a U shape in the river where we may not see the entrance to the sea like in the image. Again this in no way proves anything. Ubisoft world designs could just be very liberal with the mountains when they shouldn't be, but it does make for interesting speculation. [link] [comments]

I sincerely hope that Valhalla is going to be the start of Ubisoft's renaissance Posted: 01 May 2020 09:08 AM PDT If you think about it, Valhalla (and Watch Dogs Legion) are the next big games from Ubisoft that are post-GR Breakpoint. Breakpoint was pretty much its namesake, the breaking point, for a lot of Ubisoft's practices. Nothing major has been out from them since, as they only have been trying to just support the current stuff (GR Breakpoint, R6 Siege, For Honor, Division 2, etc). This is also going to be the result of them not rushing AC games on an annual basis to try and compete with games that do this, too, like CoD. These changes could herald a new Ubisoft, and I am eager to see how this will be shown with Valhalla (and Legion)! That and I'm a sucker for Vikings and Norse Mythology in general, so this is probably my dream AC finally coming true! [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 May 2020 07:47 AM PDT "The Norse beliefs and the Norse mythology was an everyday part of the culture. And this is the way we're approaching it, from a sense of the grounded history of the Vikings and the Norse people," Ismail said. "We also, we're telling a personal story of Eivor. So Eivor's perspective of the world, this is sort of what's hinted at in that trailer, how Eivor will take a sign or see something and put their own spin on it." This might just be for the trailer but, if this is the case, why does he actually see Odin? Is he real? Is Eivor hallucinating? This is completely without evidence and with plenty of wishful thinking, but could the hooded figure actually be a Hidden One, whose skill and wisdom (and weird relationship with birds) leads Eivor to believe he is actually Odin? We don't actually see the figure change into the raven and assassins seeming to disappear or appear from birds has been seen in AC trailers (AC1 and AC3). Ashraf says in the trailer commentary that when Eivor sees the figure he "believes that he is recieving some kind of favour" but he does not confirm whether this figure is actually Odin. The shot is also quite reminiscent of the AC Revelations when Ezio 'sees' Altair but obviously that could very easily be a coincidence. Darby has hinted towards making sure that Valhalla is a Viking game within the AC world and having this connection between the Hidden Ones and Eivor's sense of a greater purpose would be a quite an interesting idea. The hidden blade being a gift from "Odin" would certainly make Eivor show it off. I'm not sure whether I really believe in this theory but let me know what you guys think. I'm cautiously optimistic about this game, especially with the people involved. Even if this is primarily a Viking game, I'm still excited to see what the team have come up with. We gotta change something about the Modern Story with Valhalla Posted: 01 May 2020 09:47 AM PDT I have played and beaten every single AC game and all of their DLCs. Super excited for Valhalla. However, we got some real things to fix. Specifically, the modern day storyline. Since Desmond died, the whole modern story has felt kind of pointless. In Black Flag and Rogue it was kind of interesting, but not nearly to the same degree. I could give a shit less about Layla or whoever the agent was in Syndicate and Unity. Not to mention that William showed up in Origins and then totally disappeared in Odyssey? I'm not sure what their plan was, and I'm still unsure what the deal is with Juno right now. Long story short, they either need to totally redo the modern storyline or, honestly, just totally get rid of it. I could go either way at this point. That's it lol, I'm not here to start an argument I just wanted to say my peace. [link] [comments]

My favorite passage regarding the Norse outlook on life, and their relationship to the gods Posted: 01 May 2020 11:35 PM PDT The following passage really sums up for me the place that the gods held for the people in the Norse cultures. I hope this rather mature outlook is reflected in AC Valhalla. "In spite of this awareness of fate, indeed perhaps because of it, the picture of man's qualities which emerges from the myths is a noble one. The gods are heroic figures, men writ large, who led dangerous, individualistic lives, yet at the same time were part of a closely-knit small group, with a firm sense of values and certain intense loyalties. They would give up their lives rather than surrender these values, but they would fight on as long as they could, since life was well worth while. Men knew that the gods they worshipped could not give them freedom from danger and calamity, and they did not demand that they should. We find in the myths no sense of bitterness at the harshness and unfairness of life, but rather a spirit of heroic resignation: humanity is born to trouble, but courage, adventure, and the wonders of life are matters for thankfulness, to be enjoyed while life is still granted to us. The great gifts of the gods were readiness to face the world as it was, the luck that sustains men in tight places, and the opportunity to win that glory which alone can outlive death." -- from "Gods and Myths of Northern Europe" by H.R. Ellis Davidson, 1964 [link] [comments] |
