[OC] Viking Alexios - Digital paint-over

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 01:44 PM PDT

The Templar cross was convenience rather than connection to the church

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 05:49 AM PDT

There is no proof saying that the cross was their only symbol or that they found the church of God unlike the assassin's who have always used the eagle skull(origins), so I'm thinking that they only used the cross after the rise of Christianity to help paint themselves as God sent and before they just used the symbol of the major religion in the region for the same reason

The next AC game is going to make or break my continued interest in the series as a long-time fan.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:04 PM PDT

I know many of you will just say bye bye and good riddance, I'm just one measly fan lost, etc. and that's fine. But based on what I have seen on this sub and in the greater AC community at large, I do not believe I am alone in this sentiment, and I think that if Ubi really wants to sever ties with their most loyal fans by abandoning everything that this series was founded on, they are making a big mistake.

I won't go into too much detail because I know the topic has been discussed to death on this sub, but I'll just say this firmly for clarity: I do not like Odyssey, in fact I think it's the worst game in the franchise (when it comes to main entries, anyway), and I utterly despise the half-assed RPG direction that Ubisoft Quebec has steered the series into. As someone who loves the things that defined the older games (compelling protagonists, thoughtful and well-written stories, excellent parkour mechanics, dense urban environments, fun and fluent combat and an engaging MD), I feel utterly abandoned after Odyssey.

With that being said, Montreal is lined up to make the next major entry, and to their credit, they have been responsible for my favorite games in the series (AC1, Ezio trilogy, AC3, Unity, Origins). Considering this, and how good Origins in particular (their most recent project) was, I am certainly willing to give them a fair chance to salvage what remains of this desecrated franchise.

However, I have my concerns. Firstly, if the rumors about the Viking setting are true, I am going to be immensely disappointed by that fact alone. I think a Norse setting has been done to death in games already, and I really don't see Montreal bringing anything new to the table. Furthermore, I think that a setting known for colossal, loud warriors with horns on their helmets and war paints on their faces, screaming and wielding massive axes is about as far removed from ASSASSIN'S Creed as I can imagine.

Instead, I am begging for Bayek to return in a sequel set in Ancient Rome some time after the events of Origins. There is so much potential to tie into established lore there. And Montreal has proven to be far more careful and deliberate about worldbuilding than other Ubi studios. Bayek is the best main protagonist since Ezio, followed only even closely by Edward, and to miss the potential to continue his story would be criminal.

If Montreal blows it and makes a hideous wannabe RPG in the vein of Odyssey but with Vikings, then that will be where it's time for me to check out of this series, and it will be a very sad day for me.

At the end of the day, I'll always have Ezio, Altaïr, Desmond and the other greats, and I guess I'll have nothing left but to be grateful for their stories and their games. But please, Montreal. Please don't let me down just yet.

I'm surely not the first person to think of this, but a game set in India under East India Company rule would be absolutely fantastic.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 07:52 PM PDT

India is a beautiful country, and a perfect setting for the new style of AC games.

A Templar infested East India Company would make a fantastic opposing force. Going up against a corporatocracy just feels very "Assassin's Creed".

Just thinking about it makes me want to watch the Sharpe's Rifles movies where Sean Bean goes to India.

Why I’m tired of reading emails

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:46 AM PDT

Let me start by saying that I love these games, and I love the lore, which is exactly my problem. I'm the kind of guy who plays video games for the cutscenes. Which leads me to my gripe with one of the less honored but consistent aspects of the games: reading emails outside the Animus.

Emails have been a consistent source of additional lore since AC1. Whether sneaking around as Desmond (while in clear view of security cameras) or finding Assassin slander material as the nameless Abstergo Entertainment worker in Rogue, sticking our nose into the digital footprint of other characters is a time honored AC tradition... that I'm tired of. I have two main gripes: inaccessibility and grinding.

I just finished the main storyline of Brotherhood the other day, and I was stupid enough to fall for this for about the tenth time since playing this series. Desmond is unable to leave the Animus at the end of Brotherhood, which means that you're unable to read the latest emails. It's of no major consequence, but if you enjoy reading them, it's incredibly irritating that you've just lost access to them. This is a consistent occurrence throughout the games, but I've fallen for it time and time again. In perhaps the most egregious offense, my understanding is that you can only read the emails in Odyssey during the very first instance of leaving the Animus, despite the computer just sitting there every other time you leave. I find this simply infuriating. To remedy this, simply make it possible to read emails in the Animus. It's the 21st century, and we can watch Netflix on our toasters. It seems silly Layla has to get out of the Animus to read emails (even if it's good for her).

My second gripe is tangentially related but nonetheless important to me: no lore should be doled out as reward for an unreasonable grind. The Christina missions in Brotherhood come to mind as a typical example. While I absolutely love the lore, they shouldn't have been rewards for reaching certain levels of synchronization, even if 75% for the final one isn't an excessive burden. (And while admittedly the idea of repressed memories was genius, it's based on a psychological myth.) Perhaps a better example is the feather collecting in AC2, where there is no map with the location of the feathers in game, and you get a ten second cutscene as a reward for collecting them all. If you really want to reward players for synchronization, give us weapons or some other gameplay advantage, just not anything that could be broadly defined as lore.

I know this is a relatively minor gripe, but please understand I don't say this as a troll who "hates" any of the games. In fact, I adore the series and can't get enough. But it's time to end emails and grinding for lore.

Are We Really Hiding In Plain Sight in These Games?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 02:54 PM PDT

Anyone else find it funny how the assassin's main point is "Hide in plain sight" yet when we play the games we're doing everything that goes against that like we're hanging upside down from ladders and jumping off bridges in public and shit?

Where would u guys rank Origins among the series?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:39 PM PDT

For me it's number 1, i'm a relative new player since Origins came out, tried to get in the older games but can never finish them unlike Origins, imo Bayek stories can rival Geralt's plus all the myths, as a history buff this shit was amazing. Damn masterpiece. Players might prefer the older games but like Mass Effect Series, i think 3 was the best and 1 was boring, it's subjective.

Is there missable quests in Origins?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 07:50 PM PDT

I want to finish the story quests one after another so I don't forget anything but do side quests disappear if I don't do them right away and save them until after the story?

    suggestion for future games

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:59 PM PDT

let us build our own town with defences please. recruit our units (from quests and by just attracting settlers) and give them a place in the town, defence or farming or scouting and gathering resources. with a it's own economy and defense uprades. like fallout 4 settlement system.also give the settlers better armor etc. basicly fallout 4 settlement system. just an area to create. in odyssey the recruitment sysytem was a beginning. but you can see only 4 at a time. a little viking stronghold/settlement.

Assuming the modern day had excellent writing and quests, what would be the ideal runtime for MD content in this new AC era?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:47 AM PDT

What would be the ideal percentage, or hours of modern day content in the new games. Assuming that content was fantastic, how long should it be in your opinion? Taking in consideration also the overall length of the current games.

[Spoiler] Is Layla truly chosen one?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 05:39 PM PDT

So in Fate of Atlantis episodes.. we don't really see Layla controlling herself well with the staff, she is awfully obssessed with staff and already showed she can't control it by killing Victoria.

Aletheia also doubted whether Layla is actually chosen one or not

They say staff could corrupt the one who wields it, if Layla was affected by that abillity, I am not sure if Mistios made right choice by handing the staff to Layla.

My view on AC:Origins and AC:Odyssey after having played both for 70+ hours.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 07:16 PM PDT

Ok so before we start I want to say that I enjoyed both games quite a bit, and they both had their positives and negatives. In this post I'm going to compare a couple of things from Odyssey to Origins, and that's mainly because Odyssey was the newest game in the lineup so you'd hoped they would have taken the good and moved it forward and then polished some of the bad

Combat: Let's start with combat. Odyssey definitely improved on the combat from Origins in more ways than one. There were more skills, more specilization specific skills. Overall the combat was better, except for one thing...

Why does the main character never have the option to use a shield. Who's genius idea in the dev team was it to not have us be able to use a damn shield.. in that time period of Greece... really? I get that it's a design decision but I honestly think it was really really dumb. Warfare in that time period was DOMINATED by the use of giant shields and spears, phalanx formations, etc. Why was there no option at all given to the player to use a shield or not?

This is something I don't understand, we had that choice already with Bayek, you could use a shield and sword or spear, or you could dual wield if you wanted to, why take that away?

think of all the badass spartan shield+spear or shield+sword combat animations we could have had..

Look at the first half f this video and tell me that style of combat isnt badass

Map/immersion: This is another point where I feel like they dropped the ball a little, maybe the game was rushed, I'm not sure but I'll explain why.

The map in Origins (atleast to me) felt way more immersive and alive. It felt more varied. There were giant deserts, there were forests, oasis areas, swamps, farmlands. Graphically the game just looked better, there was a lot of variety in colors and environment design. It just looked better.

Now compare that to Odyssey, there's definitely more content packed together, but it's like 90% the same kind of environment. Forest, forest and more forest. There were a couple of standout islands that looked nice but that was about it. The color palette is mostly the same with little variety. Areas 70 hours into the game look the exact same as the areas 2 hours in. They could have done so much better in my opinion.

Origins was also a lot more immersive to me, you had sand storms, you would see mirages and hallucinations in the desert, it had a lot of smaller detail polish things in it.

I'm reinstalling Origins as we speak to play through it again, but I honestly don't think I can say the same about Odyssey even in a year or two. I've just had enough of generic forest environment.
