Stealth is BROKEN in AC Valhalla! (Discussion/Showcase)

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:58 AM PDT

So I've seen plenty of threads on here, claiming stealth in Valhalla is fine or works as intended. However, mine and many others in the stealth community's experience of this game is anything but that. This is a showcase of the many issues that currently plague Valhalla. As the issues are so widespread and numerous, that consistent stealth is nigh on impossible, even in the current patch.

A complete street map of Unity's Versailles and Saint Denis, based on in-game signs

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 06:04 PM PDT

A complete street map of Unity's Versailles and Saint Denis, based on in-game signs

A year ago, I posted "TIL Every street in Unity's Paris has a name", upon discovering that - barring a few exceptions - every street in Paris has a blue plaque somewhere in it giving it a name. I spent some time exploring every nook and cranny of the city, searching for these blue plaques, and turned them into a map, which I uploaded here in a post titled "A complete street map of Unity's Paris, based on in-game signs". Like these, this map showed the streets, with their names overlaid.

(Cool fact: that map is now the 6th result on Google Images for "AC unity map". I am VERY proud of that. Makes me feel like I did a good thing.)

Only thing is, though, I didn't do the whole game. I left Versailles and Saint Denis untouched (even though it was in Saint Denis that I first noticed it). I wasn't ever going to come back to it, but I was looking at the post again last week, getting some good vibes, and I noticed a comment asking for maps of the two other locations. I thought, "why not?", so over this weekend, I did it all over again with Versailles and Saint Denis.

Below, you'll find the result: four maps - two with street names, and two without, for a "clean" map of each area. The Versailles one is 2000x2000, the Saint Denis one 2400x2400. I've gone for a broadly similar aesthetic as my earlier map of Paris, that of Google Maps (and, as many commenters pointed out in those earlier posts, GTA). However, I've done things a little differently. Despite knocking these out quite a bit quicker than my Paris map, I've gone into much, much more granular detail.

Instead of a grey background clearly highlighting the playable area, I've decided with these to leave the background a similar grass colour to the grassy areas within the locales, but darker and with texture. I've also used shading to show raised or lowered areas, as opposed to the boxy darker areas of the Paris map. Furthermore, where my last map lacked them, these maps now also show the city walls. Doesn't functionally change much, but I like how it looks to have them alongside the coloured surroundings.

I hope you find this helpful, interesting, informative. I encourage you to play Unity and explore using these maps however you can. Hunt down these blue plaques yourselves, tell me if I missed any (considering I did these in a weekend, I probably did - when I was doing my Paris map, I found an uncharted street on Ile de la Cité at the last possible second by accident, and I spent 2 weeks on that).

    Valhalla vs Odyssey vs Origins

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:36 AM PDT

Valhalla is a great game but I liked the weapons mechanics in Odyssey better, it encouraged to more to try different weapons. Also I feel like Odyssey's locations were more varied the characters were epic (so many real historical figures). As for Origins, I'll never forget the feeling of reaching Giza for the first time, having studied ancient Egypt.

They really had a challenge to make such a good game after the history rich Origins and Odyssey, but they did a good job. Thoughts?

Does AC Syndicate have one of the best stealth systems in the entire series?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:29 AM PDT

It seems to have everything you'll need for a stealth playthrough. It has excellent black box assassination missions, unique kill opportunities, numerous infiltration points, effective ranged stealth items, whistling, cover and crouching, and different types of bombs (all of which are useful). Another reason why I think it might be one of the best in terms of stealth is because it uses the same stealth mechanics as Unity but it made things a bit more difficult. That's just my take though. Unity is a great stealth game in its own right but I can't rank it above Syndicate because it was just way too easy. Unity is one of the few AC games where I was able to breeze through the missions without entering open combat. A lot of stealth missions in Unity felt like tutorial missions from Hitman in terms of difficulty. Smoke Bombs are OP, Berserk Darts can clear out entire rooms by making 1 brute go crazy, and guards are deaf because you can fire pistols/rifles out in the open without anyone noticing. I found Unity to have the easiest stealth system in the entire series. I even found stealth in Black Flag & Rogue slightly more difficult than in Unity. Syndicate on the other hand, gave me more of a test than Unity. The kidnapping missions were fun because it made me plan and select the safest path in order to escort my target outside the danger zone. The child liberation missions were great because it felt like you had to sneak around in an enclosed factory while saving groups of children. Thoughts?

The problem is not the direction of AC, the problem is Ubisoft

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:50 PM PDT

Yes, I get it, the direction AC is headed to with AC Infinity is not a pretty one for most people here. But, consider this, if devs want to invest their time in this franchise where they know Assassins and Templars, Isu, Modern Day, Stealth, Parkour are the main focus... Obviously Assassin's Creed will turn out to be good.

But the thing is, Ubisoft won't let them.

This is evident by high profile people like Darby McDevitt, Raphael Lacoste, who were with the AC franchise from it's golden days leaving Ubisoft. People constantly bring up the huge sales of Odyssey and Valhalla into factor but never consider why these passionate folks left this company. This all also factors into the abusive workplace culture of Ubi but that's another topic.

The point here is, Ubisoft is so blinded by money and cashgrabbing as much as they can from their audience, that they don't even care about the core of this franchise, the developer's visions, and not turning every single player game into a live service model. All they want is a generic open world RPG games with Vikings and Spartans which have no resemblance to Assassins, where people will log on to it after a month or two, just to do a timed quest in a day, or a week, then shut the game for months.

Devs like Darby, who I'm sure had so much in mind for a Norse story with Vikings and Assassins both, was made to dumb down the lore for bloating the game with mythical shit and filler content, leading to people buying microtransactions to level up fast..

Tbh, I'm more excited for what Haven Studios and Illogica will develop rather than get hyped for a new AC game. Peace

Tl;dr: AC is never getting to it's roots because Ubisoft doesn't care about dev's visions and is too busy with cashgrabbing their fans with shit that has no resemblance to an AC game.

New mechanic for parkour, should the series return to Pre-Origins parkour mechanics

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:28 PM PDT

Hi all, this isn't a rumor or anything, I was just kinda brainstorming a random mechanic I thought would be cool for parkour in like a perfect marriage of the Unity/Ezio game mechanics, just to add a new element to parkour that could provide an interesting mastery/learning curve and a new element of environmental puzzles.

Essentially, this boils down to giving the A/X/Space input another use of the jump. So obviously, providing full sprint remains just R2/RT, X/A/Space would be hold to parkour and press to jump. Now, the new mechanic would essentially be a horizontal, straight wall jump. Think of it like a manual hookblade that can double the distance of a jump, but using your legs, so long as you are running close to a wall. So the character would jump, and then the next time you press A/X/Space, the character would use the wall as a foothold to jump straight ahead. So think of Prince of Persia wall running, but just a manually triggered jump along a wall, that you can activate at any point. So even if you fall quite a bit and still jump, but of course it would be less distance if you do so, so you would jump at a lower angle. So I'm thinking puzzles that require you to perhaps time a jump to a ledge/pole that is further away than usual, timing a jump to a lower ledge that is further away than a normal jump would take you. And of course, the open world traversal opportunities it would give.

Furthermore, holding A/X/Space would start the diagonal wall climb introduced in Unity, but again you could jump further if you press it again to further the distance you can jump. I'm imagining the animation would look like a hybrid of a wall run and the climbing in Unity. Maybe even if you press B/O you can skid down the wall, such as if there is no foothold for the character to grab to reduce the damage of just grasping while free-falling (I guess a new mechanic to introduce consequences to just yeeting yourself off the side of buildings? lol. Could maybe force players to think of every action they make while parkouring?).

This is 100% a half-baked idea that I just thought of, so I probably haven't thought of the obstacles to this or the problems this could create, or heck if it's already in one of the games. I'm imagining an engine that combines the speed and responsiveness of the parkour in the Ezio games with the fluidity and flourish of Unity.

What do you guys think? Sorry for rambling so much XD

The New AC Trilogy have gorgeous maps, what are the best locations in them?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:11 PM PDT

I've recently replayed Origins and I'm currently replaying Odyssey before playing getting back into Valhalla for the DLCs. As I'm playing through them again I'm totally blown away by how incredible the maps all are. Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla all have very distinct settings and yet they all manage to look great. Odyssey might be my favorite with the gorgeous blue water and Greek islands but I also love the deserts of Egypt and the dark forests in Valhalla. It makes me curious, what are some of everyone's favorite locations in the games strictly for aesthetics? I think Memphis and Athens are both incredible and I also really like the Northern Lights in Norway.

Auto aim bug with the bow

Has anyone else had this problem since release? Whenever I aim the bow when an enemy spots me and it auto aims to them the bow immediately aims somewhere else and if I try to aim it back at them it just does the same thing again.

Does the Public in Assassin's Creed Know What an Animus is and that they're Used for Making Videogames?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 10:41 AM PDT

I haven't played AC 4 yet, but from what I've heard, Abstergo takes the memories you live through with the Animus, heavily edit them to make it seem like the Assassins are the enemies, and release them to the public as video games. However, they still include the Templar vs Assassin story, right? Also, does the public know that Abstergo used the Animus to make the video games? If both of those are a yes, does that mean that the whole public now knows about the battle between the Templars and Assassin's throughout history? This is still supposed to be a secret, right?

How big will Siege of Paris be?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 02:53 PM PDT

How big is Siege of Paris supposed to be compared to Wrath of the Druids? I know its download size is essentially double the size of the Irish DLC but does that mean it will necessarily be bigger in scope and content?

Why is no one on AC4 Black Flag Multiplayer?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 05:42 AM PDT

Honestly, with the way today's battle royals games have been lately, I just want to bring this unique game mode back into the spotlight. The gameplay elements in this multiplayer are some of the most unique and interesting, with the art of deception and stealth being the main skill set rather then pure mechanical skill.

It sure is an old game and has it's flaws, but all the abilities can be unlocked via leveling up your profile, and the ability systems are simple and really fun to use!

If you guys haven't tried multiplayer in AC4 and own it, personally I recommend at least giving it a go. Very strong Among-Us vibes

Is the DLC of Odyssey Necessary?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 06:51 PM PDT

I finally got the platinum for Odyssey, so I've explored Greece plenty. For the overarching story, are the DLCs of Odyssey necessary? I played episode 1 of the first blade; while the story is cool, I'm pretty sick of Greece and odyssey in general and I'm itching to move on to Valhalla. Are there super important story beats that I'll miss out on and be behind for in Valhalla if I skip the rest of the DLCs?

Valhalla - Does weapon alignment have any effect on stats?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2021 07:28 AM PDT

As the title says, I'm confused by the way gear alignment affects stats. E.g if I have The Way of the Raven passive I should gain +1 attack, but it seems like I get this bonus regardless of gear type. In a similar way, if I get "Bearded Axe" passive skill, I get the bonus regardless of gear type, as long as it is a Bearded Axe.

Also when looking at the character stats it's not clear how those passive skills and/or weapon alignment affect bonuses.

Any clue how does this work?

My question is why did Desmond have to kill Lucy I understand or remember hearing that she was going to betray you or something if someone could give me a explanation that'd be great I don't think it was ever brought up as to why.
