Why Constantinople Would be a Perfect Location for an Assassin's Creed Valhalla DLC

Why Constantinople Would be a Perfect Location for an Assassin's Creed Valhalla DLC

By the year 873, Constantinople was the heart of the Eastern Roman Empire (commonly referred to as the Byzantine Empire), but the empire itself was weakened from all fronts; the Bulgars had occupied lands in the Danubian region, the Arabs threatened the Anatolian provinces, the Lombards and Franks continued to threaten the Roman Empire's last remaining holdings in Italy, and most importantly for this post, Norse raiders began sailing down the Dnieper River and heading toward Constantinople itself. The Vikings knew Constantinople by the name, "Miklagard," or the Great City, mostly because it was the largest city they had seen yet (and rightly so)!

The Roman Empire in 873 AD

Constantinople had a population ranging between 500 to 800,000 inhabitants, making it Europe's largest city during this era. By comparison, the city of Rome had only 30,000 citizens, and London had even fewer, roughly at 12,000. Constantinople was built at the crossroads between Europe and Asia and at the connecting point between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. As a result, the capital (and the empire as a whole) became wealthy and were exposed to new cultures ranging from the Arabs to the Slavic tribes, and especially the peoples of Scandinavia.

The Imperial City of Constantinople - Antoine Helbert

First contact between the heirs of Rome and the Vikings began in the 860s, when Norse raiders attempted an assault on Constantinople itself. However, this raid (and all other future raids in the following decades) would fail. After all, Constantinople possessed the impregnable Theodosian Walls, which had already proved effective against Hunnic, Germanic, Sassanid, and even Arab armies. Adding more to the capital's defenses was the Roman Navy, equipped with flamethrowers that spewed Greek Fire on enemy vessels. Even though the Vikings failed to capture Miklagard, the Roman Emperors provided them trading rights, their own merchant districts, and even the right to settle near the capital. The largest impact the Vikings had on the Eastern Roman Empire was the formation of the Varangian Guard, an elite unit of Norse (and later Saxon) mercenaries tasked with protecting the Roman Emperors and participating in their wars against the empire's many enemies.

Constantinople was one of Europe's most culturally and economically prosperous cities, with such monuments like the Hippodrome, the Imperial Palace, and the Hagia Sophia dominating political, cultural, and religious life in the city. The city's architecture was largely influenced by the style of the empire's Greek and Roman predecessors. Byzantine culture and art had such an expansive influence that buildings like Aachen Cathedral in Germany were built and designed in a Byzantine manner; Many churchs and cathedrals in Italy maintain their Byzantine influences (including San Vitale in Ravenna and San Marco in Venice); and Orthodox iconography/art are still widely used in Orthodox nations like Greece, Russia, and Georgia.

    Potential AC Lore

We know that in the base game, Eivor's brother met the Hidden Ones in the city of Constantinople, which by then was open to Norse traders and mercenaries. If Constantinople was added to AC Valhalla, it would be a strong setting for the conflict between the Hidden Ones and the Order of the Ancients. By 873, the empire was still reeling from its loss of territory, but the recent ascension of the Macedonian Dynasty would prove fruitful for the Romans in the following centuries. With Constantinople being such a politically and economically important city, it would be no surprise that the Order of the Ancients would have already had influence in the city. However, perhaps the Macedonian Dynasty feel that their position are threatened by the Order, and could ask the Hidden Ones for assistance. With Scandinavia already connected with the heart of the Roman Empire, Eivor would obviously join the Hidden Ones in crushing the Order's power in the capital.

Now, of course, the city would be HUGE compared to London and Winchester in England, and a DLC with Constantinople could only involve a city-only map like in earlier Assassin's Creed titles to account for the capital's large size and population density. There could even be some new armor sets that adhere to Roman and Varangian styles, and even a FLAMETHROWER (remember that the Byzantine Empire used Greek Fire to burn enemy ships, and they even designed flamethrowers [especially hand-held ones] during the 7th century to make the use of the Greek Fire more effective. Plus, it would bring back more memories from AC Revelations)!

Ezio Auditore Using Greek Fire against a Templar Blockade - AC Revelations

    Conclusion

Constantinople during the rise of the Macedonian dynasty would be a fascinating city to visit in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and it could potentially breathe new life into AC Lore during the Dark Ages and add an exciting/memorable experience for those who play AC Valhalla. For Miklagard!

(Spoilers)....ok so a few things to note from the part 3 leaked trailer...I watched it and these are what I derived from it

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:34 PM PST

    1. Cloak physics is fixed

    2. The social stealth is not a niche thing they added for old fans to be happy and it's actual thing. It's taught to eivor by basim during his first assassination

    3. The world looks downright beautiful and Ubisoft shot themselves in the foot not showing Norway and showing boring ass East anglia

    4. Lot of particle effects noted compared to odyssey and origins

    5. Swimming in ice cold waters of Norway will get u killed as eivor says something like water is cold it'll freeze my blood

    6. Cut scenes look polished and far better than whatever the fuck we saw in July and October

    7. Facial animations are still kinda weak but it's better than October build and miles ahead compared to July. It's on par with odyssey and sometimes better than odyssey

    8. When eivor walks the camera zooms in and he is placed on the left side of the screen (not sure if it's like this but from what I saw it happened). It reminded me of origins. In odyssey this shit wasn't there and eivors walking animation is also dope and far better than alexios or kassandra who walked like they had to take a mondo duke

    9. Modern day spoilers shaun and Rebecca are in the game and they look older and Shaun has a beard and Rebecca doesn't look like a baby faced girl anymore. She looks like a grown ass adult. Layla looks like a drug addict and it seems she is one from the looks of it as she smokes and takes pills and shit

    10. You are in some cottage in the middle of the forest during modern day I think it's Vinland as eivors remains are found and Layla says "you are quite far away from home eivor" so maybe it's Vinland or it's England

I really wish we got a game that brought back Arno, Connor and Shay to finish up the story from their three games

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 12:07 PM PST

Rogue has some of the cringiest moments in the franchise for sure, but one thing that game handled masterfully was combining the elements and left over story threads from IV and III while also being a very good prequel/ set-up for Unity.

Shay ends up being a HUGE part of Arno's development and it seems completely logical to assume that Arno would find out about and then pursue Shay later in Arno's life, plus at this point Shay had learnt about how all his work in the colonies had fallen apart due to Connor.

Back in 2014/2015, I would have assumed that the franchise was heading in the direction of a final game for these three characters, one that brought them all together where Shay is chasing Connor while Arno is chasing Shay, it could have been awesome but then we just went in a completely different direction with Synidcate and then the franchise changing completely for the soft reboot.

    What does everyone else think?

[Spoilers] To the surprise of no one Valhalla will have microtransactions identical to how odysseys were.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:32 PM PST

During a livestream a player managed to get a peak into what the helix store offers, the pricing and contents are very similar to odyssey's helix store. we all knew the helix store would be included, now we know for sure exactly how so. hopefully its possible to reliably earn them in game but im not getting my hopes up.

thankfully it seems as though time savers are not present which is a good thing, although the utilities tab is concerning.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:35 AM PST

I feel like I'm the only one that wants more and more present day stuff in the new games.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:34 PM PST

I see all the time nobody cares about the present day stuff so they're happy that they rely more on the historical time gameplay but maybe you don't enjoy the present day stuff because Ubisoft are so lazy that they can't even find an interesting way to do it since Black Flag because you complain about it being boring. It's a terrible cycle, the present day is already shit so people complain so they make it more shit and don't even try anymore. I've played every game except for Syndicate and Rogue, and one of the most interesting things for me the entire time was the Desmond stuff and even the fake Ubisoft first person stuff they had for a bit. Now it's just Layla, this boring ass character that literally does nothing the entire time.

I just beat the Odyssey DLC only because I wanted more story of the present day but man was that seriously disappointing. I just think it's terrible that this game was built on the fact that there are two interesting stories going on, one in the past and one in the future, yet they completely abandoned it. I don't find it really believable that these developers find it that hard to make another Desmond type story where the present day self can be just as important.

As far as I know I'm the first person to do this and I think it aligns well with Ubisoft's vision for "Let the animus decide". I hope Ubisoft sees this, because personally I think this is how the original trailer should have been. Enjoy! (PS YouTube link in comments)

Please, please, pleeeease add one-handed swords post launch in Valhalla.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 12:25 AM PST

I have been so excited for so long with this game and last week I learned that there will ONLY be two handed swords... WHAT??? that really dropped the hype for me big time!!

I was really looking forward to dual wield one handed swords and just go berserk and slice everything in my path.. I am just not a fan of axes and maces so this was quite annoying..

It is just so weird, EVERY other assassins creed game has had one handed swords, this game lets us finally dual wield and they take it away?!? The hell is wrong with the devs...?

Please add it in a future update or dlc! I want it so badly!

When the animus switches us from male to female (or female to male) will we keep all of our equipment, weapons and abilities?

The worst thing about Syndicate for me was the robe physics: a serious downgrade from Unity

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:47 PM PST

The title really says it all. I was so hyped from the cinematic trailer and couldn't be more disappointed with the actual gameplay. I mean half the point of getting the game is so you could fight bad guys atop trains/carriages with your robes flowing in the wind (also while ziplining). I mean it was fine in Unity, what the hell happened? Hell, even Ezio's cape was better. Origins nailed clothes physics too.

Another thing, the trains were too damn slow except the runaway train mission. Even if it crossed realistic boundaries, faster trains would have been better for gameplay.

SPOILER - New interview with the Valhalla voice actors with some spoilers for the early part of the main story.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:50 AM PST

I am replaying the first game and I have some questions.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:05 AM PST

1.How are confessions supposed to work?

After every single Assassination you are exposed since, the target is always surrounded by guards. When do the confessions take place? Do the guards just wait 3 minutes while Altair is done talking to his victim. Is the animus automatically correcting the scene to the "real" event in which the target is killed when he is alone? Why not let us actually do the events the "real" way? Have the target go in a secluded area every now an then to allow for the canon assassination.

    1. Why do people on this sub insist on saying that the series "abandoned its stealth roots by forcing you into combat" when every single game in the series did this?

I am going to get downvoted to hell for this, but AC was never a pure stealth game. Even in the first one you are forced to fight enemies, and if you want to get 100% sync you have to do a LOT of fighting, since there is no way to stealthy way to save citizens harassed by guards.

Stealth was significantly altered yes, instead of social stealth and "hiding in plain sight", they moved towards more "traditional" stealth mechanics where you must avoid getting seen. I think that it is a downgrade, since the social stealth was unique to AC, but saying that stealth is no longer there and it is not viable is simply not true.
