Assassin's Creed Valhalla Spoiler Discussion [Spoilers Allowed]

    Posted: 09 Nov 2020 01:12 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

Today is the day! Assassin's Creed Valhalla is now released (for some) and we can finally board our longships, blow our horns and go a-viking to explore the lands of England. Begin anew, grow a community, form alliances, discover ancient secrets, outdrink everyone or adopt a cat! It's up to you.

As part of our launch day preparations, we are creating this megathread for everyone to discuss their spoiler - filled first impressions of the game. Feel free to discuss the main story, world events, the present day, First Civilization, lore or anything else you may like.

The only rule around here is more of a polite request - please tag any spoilers for end-game quests and content. Some people may want to rush the story, others would prefer to enjoy the game and the world at a slower pace, so don't be that guy and please be considerate to your fellow readers.

Before posting on the subreddit, please read and follow our rules (especially those regarding spoilers, we mean it!) and make sure to add [Spoilers] to your title if you wish to discuss spoilers. And don't ever post actual spoilers in the title. Just don't do it.

    How to hide spoilers:

    Preferred method:

    >!Eivor is a Viking.!<

    Result: Eivor is a Viking.

DO NOT leave any spaces at the start or the end. You can also use the "Spoiler" function in Reddit's text editor.

    Alternative method (Old Reddit):

[Valhalla Spoiler](#s "Eivor is a Viking.")

    Result: Valhalla Spoiler

This method primarily works for old Reddit and may not work on Redesign. We encourage everyone to use the first, preferred method.

If you're looking for a more general non - spoiler discussion, then what are you doing here? Go over to the General Discussion megathread or catch up with the latest Valhalla revews in the Review megathread.

Thank you for your understanding and happy gaming!

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is 10 Years Old Today!

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 12:32 PM PST

    Hello fellow Creed fans!

Today is the 10th anniversary of my all time favourite Assassin's Creed game: Brotherhood. I'm sure many others love this game as much as I do! The characters and their personalities within the game are pure art. We see Ezio as a matured young man after the events of Assassin's Creed II, who is beginning to settle down in Monteriggioni. Only for this to be shattered by the sudden arrival of the Borgia, which was lead by my favourite antagonist of the series, Cesare Borgia who is driven by power and greed. Unfortunately Ezio loses another close family member due to this encounter as well as the apple, forcing him to travel to Rome to retrieve the apple once more. The City of Rome is extremely beautiful in this game, the map size may not be the largest, but there's the same attention to detail nonetheless, from the Colloseum to Castel Sant'Angelo, both hallmarks within Roman architecture! Throughout his time in Rome, we see Ezio hunting down many of Cesare's close allies and family members, a lot of this is gathering information and tailing targets, which to me is true AC. The ambience of Rome is amplified by the beautiful sound tracks, composed by Jesper Kyd. The scenic buildings and famous sites add to what I love about AC: Brotherhood. The storyline is by far one of my favourite, AC: II is very close to it! I also love the combat mechanics, cleaner than AC: II but still simply beautiful. As for the final battle between Ezio and Cesare in Vienna, this was an amazing climax to the game, which certainly made all of the build-up from the game feel worth it! This was the final page in regards to Ezio's journey for vengeance, as far as I can tell!

Just wanted to share my love for this amazing game on its 10 Year Anniversary! Hope everyone is having a good day!

    Loyal AC Fan!

Valhalla: Why on God's green Earth aren't there any viking swords in this here viking game??

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 04:27 AM PST

I was annoyed before release at the sight of severely inaccurate greatswords in the 9th century, as well as flails and "simply never existed" Dungeons and Dragons-style double-bitted axes... but I was willing to overlook it. I was just going to stick to the historical weapons for the sake of immersion.

But my viking simply can't have a viking sword?? The staple weapon of every AC game so far except for Syndicate??

Can someone explain the reasoning behind this?

This game is more amazing that it seems (and actually a lot better than what people talk about)

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 10:17 AM PST

I am 35h ingame so far, and at 12% progression (according to ubi connect). And i can just say this is my favourite AC. Here I am just gonna talk about the positive things and not about the flaws, which I think are minor compared to the greatness of the game. First thing, SAY GOODBYE to the repetitive stuff. You can feel The variety of the quests (including the side « mysteries »). And I mean real variety, like some investigation on some quests, massive action on other ones... Exploration is also rewarding and very fun, with some puzzles and the fun (or not fun haha) difficulty to find the entrance of the treasure cave. Globally, I can confirm that AC Valhalla deserve a place with the great modern rpg's and open world games.

[Spoiler] Interactive Map for Assassin's Creed Valhalla UPDATE - Full England and Norway map with all collectibles and locations

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 05:01 AM PST

Map zooming in Valhalla is terrible on PC

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 01:22 PM PST

Is it just me experiencing this, am I doing something wrong?

If I zoom in on the map, look around a bit, zoom out, the centre of the zoom is completely reset, it isn't centred on the mouse cursor or anything as far as I can tell, and it just means zooming in and out you lose your bearings as the X and Y axes just jump all over the place.

If anyone can point me in the direction of what I might be doing wrong, I'd appreciate it.

Can we get a little change that shuts up our raiders if we're passing a "raid location" we've already done?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 07:02 AM PST

I feel like I've never been able to hear a full story or full song because EVERYTIME we pass a raid location our raiders or Eivor are like "yo... a place to raid, shut up! I know it's still on fire because we just raided there about 5 minutes ago but still... shuuuus" and this happens... every time.

I love there's a lot of places to raid, enemy camps, churches ect. but... why have stories or songs if they are constantly being interrupted? Give us the option to set it to just have call outs when we pass one we HAVEN'T raided yet.

I wouldn't mind chasing the flying pages if the rewards were worth it.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:49 AM PST

In Black Flag, the flying pages could get bothersome but the rewards were a blast - I adored the sea shanties and discovering new ones! But in Valhalla, where the unlocks are just tattoos, I dread having to do it every time - it's a clunky chore that I often need to repeat for a reward that I'll never use.

At least the pages respawn immediately. That's a welcome relief.

Am I missing something or did they actually remove the ability to swing your weapon while on horseback?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 04:12 PM PST

Why does Eivor give the weakest kick known to man when he could bash someone's face in with a flail or dismember them with a Great Dane axe. This would also make running down foxes and "shhh I'm hunting wabbits" much easier.

(No Spoilers) Is it possible to have grouped "region spoiler" threads instead of one week old megathread?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:24 PM PST

Similar to how Red Dead Redemption 2 subreddit had spoiler threads for each chapter of the game. Maybe so there isn't 20 threads, just group two together based generally on power level needed for the region. It would be nice to talk about individual areas and plotlines even if the story beats are not super lengthy. Or any other way of dividing up game spoilers if anyone had a better suggestion.

Something that would have made this game 10x more fun

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:23 PM PST

I think they missed a huge opportunity to put in the system they had in brotherhood. It would have been awesome to recruit and send your Vikings on raids to level them up and get resources. Also a trading system like in AC3 would have been awesome to help build up the settlement. It would have made both feel more meaningful.

Ubisoft got it right (no spoilers)

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 11:44 AM PST

I am 50 hours into Assassin's Creed Valhalla and just wow, Ubisoft finally found their footing with this game. They listened to us, almost every complaint we had with origins and odyssey has been addressed in Valhalla. There is little to no grind, dialogue choices actually matter, the story is beautifully written, it has the best optimization in any AC game yet, I could go on and on. If you're on the fence about buying this game, do yourself a favor and get it.

{Spoilers} Why is no one talking about the fact that our favorite merchant is back?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 06:52 PM PST

I'm talking about reda. I was super surprised to see him return since the last time we saw him was in ancient Egypt. How he's still alive is beyond me but I'm just glad he's back. Even though he didn't have a major role In origins, in my opinion he's a pretty memorable character.

So after 40 hours I barely finished 4 out of 16-ish areas

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 09:35 AM PST

Wow, this game must be the biggest AC to date content wise. Sure, Odyssey was big too, but many areas were entirely skipable aside finding a few artefacts. I think Ubisoft's decision to create a main, meaningful arc for each region was genius - not only it gives reason to explore each area, but it also connects you to very interesting local characters, some of which end up joining you (another great decision).

Btw, this is not even counting the....dream arc (not to spoil it), which is an entire thing on its own...

    Need more 'Viking' looking armour

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 04:39 AM PST

Here are some small improvements I would love to see:

    - Too much of the armour looks like it was designed for the Asgard portion of the game and not for England and Norway. I'd love to see more traditional viking armour.

    - Another amazing addition I think would be able to have the cloak covering without the hood and vice versa. More player choice is never an issue.

    - More weapon slots would be nice so we can have the shield on our back and swap between using two axes and axe and shield on the fly, for example.

    - We should be able to remove the cape as well just like the Jomsviking.

    - Adjustable camera options like RDR2, this is incredibly easy to implement. The camera feels like a top down strategy game sometimes in combat, it's far too zoomed out (of course this is preference).

Small quality of life upgrades could make this game phenomenal.

Tip for breaking weak walls in Valhalla

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 10:18 PM PST

If you unlock the ability that allows you to fire explosive arrows you can actually use them to break weak walls instead of having to find an oil jar to throw at them.

Major progress lost, please save your game.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:40 PM PST

Hey guys, just as a warning to you out there, SAVE AFTER EVERY SINGLE MISSION.

I just played through an entire arc, beat the arc and then went through a crash. Found myself losing all progress in the arc, which was around 3+ hours.

Overall enjoying the game but stuff like this is reaaaaaaly demoralizing and makes me lose interest in playing any further.

Who is responsible for the tomahawk choreography in AC3?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 03:31 PM PST

I'm a martial artist who loves tomahawks. In my opinion, AC3 had the best depiction of tomahawk usage in any media I know of. Who designed it? Who did they consult with?

Additionally, I feel it had the most realistic depiction of battle axe combat in general (though I haven't played Valhalla yet; don't have any game systems right now.) In real life, one-handed battle axes tended to be very light and fast weapons like Connor's tomahawk. This was true across numerous cultures. They were merely shorter than swords and lacked a point, but were not any slower or more difficult to handle than swords. They weren't these sluggish brute weapons as depicted in most games and movies; that stereotype probably emerged from early fantasy writers handling their parents splitting axes, which would have had heads weighing three times as much as a battle axe head or more, and having that be their only frame of reference as to what it feels like to wield an axe. A battle axe is like a thin, light meat cleaver on a stick.

Valhalla’s social stealth should be revisited.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 06:53 AM PST

We can't hide among people, only with few dudes that rarely spawn, other things like sitting or faking something might not work because of the input problems. Sometimes inputs don't show up or they don't work at all.

Not sure if a cool homage or sad reuse of assets, but a specific weapon model in Valhalla has now been in 4 Ubisoft games

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 09:30 PM PST

Slight spoiler ahead. Nothing story worthy.

    Weapon: Sepulcher Axe

Description: Golden axe of Nordic design with a wolf head engraved.

    Link to this axe here

Games found in order of most to least recent.

    AC: Valhalla - "Sepulcher Axe"

    AC: Odyssey - "Golden Axe"

    AC: Origins - "Sahalin Axe"

    For Honor - "Sahalin Axe"

It looks practically identical in all these games.

What do you think? As the title states, cool homage or sad reuse of assists?

Why do I have to reassign Bjorn over and over?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 06:58 AM PST

So I've done the Berserker mission with Bjorn and now I have the option to Assign him to my ship however for some odd reason whenever I respawn the boat or go away and come back he is not assigned and I have to do it again

[SPOILER] Frustration regarding a certain outfit/armor set

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 02:16 PM PST

Anyone else here agitated that they couldn't wear the Native American outfit after the Vinland Saga? Is it just laziness on the devs part to not include it in the entirety of the game or what? You spend so much time building it up piece by piece only to have to leave it behind in Vinland.

Unless there is a way to get it to England/Norway that I don't know about!

Valhalla PSA: Manual saves override on console; I lost a 60+ hour save.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 07:58 AM PST

    Title.

I've been playing Valhalla since launch. Last night, my spouse wanted to start a save. I completed a manual save of my game, he started his. Before exiting, he also manually saved into a NEW SLOT. I could see my previous save in the list below. All was well.

Today, I open up the game, and my save is totally gone. Nonexistent.

There is a warning when you start a new save that your Autosaves will be overridden, which is fine, allowing players to just continue from the main screen without selecting a game to load.

With some googling, I discovered this is a common console issue. Any new manual save you make automatically overwrites the last one, even if you select a new game file.

TL;DR - use a separate account if you don't want your save deleted.

Also, yes, we just use one account on our console because I see no need to pay for 2 online memberships.

    EDIT:

Thanks for the heads up about not needing two memberships! I'm not sure why I thought we did, maybe a holdover from back in the day.
