Assassin's Creed Valhalla's settlement explored: your new Viking home

How Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Settlement Pulls You Into Everyday Viking Life

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 07:14 PM PDT

"The great purge" of Assassins by Abstergo would have been way more impactful in a game than it was in the comic.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 09:39 AM PDT

Basic details on the purge: In 2000, the Templars got a sleeper agent whose mind had been wiped to join the Assassins. He then climbed their ranks until he met with the mentor, when his training kicked in, killing the mentor, and returning to Abstergo, giving them valuable data on Assassin hideouts. The Templars at Abstergo then used this to raid numerous facilities, killing or capturing everyone they found. This is the reason that modern day assassins are in hiding during the games, as most have been captured or killed, and the rest are underground.

It feels like that scene could have had a lot of emotional impact, especially if it came at the end of a game, or as a surprise. Watching characters we've seen and worked with be killed, and the home base we've been using be destroyed could be super impactful, especially if they used a mechanic similar to that of "The Tyranny of King Washington", where you're forced to fight an endless horde of enemies as your allies fall one by one, until your health bar hits zero and trigger a cutscene.

Not to mention, it just seems like an exciting, dramatic scene. In most modern day segments, you do a basic mission, or walk around a blank area with one or two people. One of the most interesting, shocking, emotionally charged scene in the series gets a few pages of a comic, and that's it.

AC Unity’s World My Honest Opinions

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 12:13 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I've been a huge gamer. Both AC and non-AC series, but does anyone feel like AC Unity's world was actually one of the most immersive, alive game worlds of all time?

Now you might not believe me right off the bat, but taking another look at this game. Walking through the actual streets of the city, going inside the buildings. I mean the citizens are packed to every inch of the city and there's certain spots with lots of rioting civilians.

The population density of this game was phenomenal, and people are seemingly always doing their task.

I've played games like Witcher 3, but the city doesn't feel as alive. I'm a huge fan of open world games like Farcry, Skyrim, AC series, RDR2 etc, but honestly Unity's France just seems so alive! And this is coming from someone that's played the games from start to end. I even thought France was more alive than ACO because I feel like odyssey have these woodlands where there's absolutely nothing for miles and miles and then cities.

Valhalla’s Settlement Sounds Really Good and Gets me Hyped

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 09:55 AM PDT

    https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-10-12-assassins-creed-valhallas-settlement-explored-your-new-viking-home

I just read this article and it sounds better than expected. The different amount of buildings sound so diverse and cool. And we even have a hidden ones bureau! I really hope it feels alive and we feel connected with every person that lives in it. There is also a seer hut who makes soups and stuff. Asgard is confirmed location and I think maybe the seer makes a soup we can drink and we faint and wake up in Asgard. The marketing is quite a let down and I still probably won't buy on launch because of cyberpunk. I'll still be getting it in December 100%.

I’m most excited about the gear system for AC Valhalla. Is that odd?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 09:20 AM PDT

I absolutely love the gear system that is going to be introduced in Valhalla.

Instead of levels and rng, we have unique weapons and armor that we upgrade through 5 tier levels. We upgrade these through the blacksmith at our settlement with resources we find through missions and out in the open world. Those 5 levels are fine, refined, superior, flawless, and mythical. As we upgrade, the weapons and armor "evolve" and change appearance to become more ornate and intricately designed. So a piece of gear that can look completely basic at fine, may end up being an amazing piece of gear in the end at mythical.

In addition to the upgrade system, instead of weapons and armor having levels they have a power score. So we can essentially use and upgrade any armor and weapon and not have to worry about if it's high level, we can upgrade it to become high level from the beginning of the game.

This gear system really excites me as is gives me more reason to find every weapon, every armor, and upgrade them to the highest tier. It also allows me to maybe find my perfect weapons and armor and bring them with me through my journey.

As if that was not enough there are set bonuses for finding and equipping weapons and armors of the same set.

Weapons and armor are also color coded to be in sync with either the bear, raven, or wolf which represents different playstyles which are melee, hunter, and stealth respectively.

This is the best gear system I have seen in an Assassin's Creed game and could be one of the best gear systems in any RPG in a long time.

The time period of 1150 to 1200 set in Persia needs to be explored more!

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 03:13 PM PDT

If you didn't know, in real life there were 2 main assassin strongholds, the masyaf castle in Syria and alamut castle in Persia (Iran).

A game in this setting would be perfect! We would get crusader action again, we would get to be the people that WERE assassins IRL, and we could even get an Altaïr cameo!

I don't know why Ubisoft won't explore this time setting, maybe it's because Ubisoft turned into ubi$oft, and the time period won't sell as well as Vikings or Spartans. But still the time period would be great!

Cult system is nice, but shouldn't be like Odyssey.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 12:26 PM PDT

I like the cult system, but it shouldn't be done like Odyssey. The members didn't have any personality or anything memorable, just text for padding.

I would rather like to have a system like origins where the cult had limited members but each having a story to tell.

Most cult members in orgins were actual characters with their own back story and some were even friends.

In orgins majority of the cult could be killed in anyway the player desired, they could be seen sandboxing in the world.

Odyssey cult system was just boring, with so much padding and they all felt same with more bloated HP bar. Only few people like kleon, Elpeon, guy in messinia etc were great.

I hope Valhalla is a more crisp and concentrated experience rather than usual crappy padding.

Quantity is not quality nor does it improve and fun factor.

I recently bought the Ezio trilogy for my ps4 and decided to turn it on since it has been a few years since I've played revelations. My goodness i forgot what a vibrant and beautiful work it is! The atmosphere, colors, factions etc. I would love for the series to revist Constantinople in a future game!

I did not enjoy Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The game played out like an AC 2 DLC instead of a fully fledged game on its own.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 11:08 PM PDT

1- Story/Characters/Location:I felt like there really was no engaging story and the characters especially the villains were forgettable. We barely saw Cesare before we were expected to assassinate him. We didn't form a strong enough bond to hate him to make his death satisfying. With the exception of Ezio of course, the other protagonists were forgettable as well, they had no strong presence in the game. I really can't remember much of the story or the characters. The were no satisfying assassinations the way there was in AC 2 because I simply could not care for the villains. Not to mention Rome is an extremely dull and boring city in this game compared to the diverse locations in AC 2. Shades of beige and brown with nature here and there. I felt like it was extremely bland to travel across.

2- Gameplay/Mechanics:The parkour did not age well. Ezio would jump in random locations and in the process either killing himself or altering the guards to his location, which made the "do not get detected" sequences extremely frustrating to complete. Ezio can't grasp on to a ledge that is very clearly within distance. The combat is clunky and very bland and simplistic. There were countless glitches in the game. The only thing I enjoyed was sending off Assassins on missions and somewhat the Tower missions. Rebuilding Rome was also fun, too bad game-Rome is bland.

Overall, I don't see why this game holds such a dear place in the hearts of many fans, completing the main storyline was struggle, I didn't care to continue playing post main story. Nothing was appealing about it, not the story, not the gameplay. They should have released this as an AC 2 DLC instead of a full fledged game on its own.

Is there an abundance of ship battles in AC: Odyssey?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 05:12 PM PDT

Really considering buying this game, but very concerned about the sailing and ship battles. I got my fill of them in Black Flag, and the few in Origins weren't enjoyable. Are there many throughout the game? Are they concentrated in a few chapters? Is there any way to avoid them? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Too many players ruin the sense of surprise, discovery, and mystery, by consuming any and all content about the game before release.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 12:45 PM PDT

Assassin's Creed fans are selling themselves short of the full experience by reading and watching all of the information that players and media outlets dig up about the game and it's world. I understand the excitement and the motivation for wanting every detail possible before release, but hear me out.

It is 10x more rewarding, satisfying, and mind blowing, the less you know about the game going into it. I see the hype and information being shared amongst the sub Reddit and other outlets and I avoid it. I try my hardest to not read or see anything that would spoil that sense of discovery and mystery that going into a story/game blindly gives me. I'm not saying you're wrong for wanting to see all of it, but I'm saying you are indeed selling the experience short.

"That stealth kill animation that looks bad ass? Meh already saw it in a video detailing all the Stealth animations."

"That settlement upgrade mechanic? Yeah I know everything about it already, no surprises here, I learned about this in a player demo video on YouTube"

This is going to be your experience.

Why throw away that feeling you get when you play a new game for the first time?

Only reason I even know about those things is reading titles from this sub. Where as the lot of you will already have studied all these game mechanics in great detail. Not saying you'll enjoy the game less than any other person, but you certainly have lost any sense of discovery or surprise when it comes to all of the content you've already seen and others continue to dig for and make videos on.

The idea of "Vikings go completely against the creed"

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 11:54 PM PDT

I see this get thrown around pretty often on here, which is weird since a lot of those same people are okay with Black Flag. Vikings are literally pirates.

I just don't understand how Pirates and Vikings, are viewed so differently on this sub

I just finished Odyssey and decided to read some posts on here afterwards

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 09:56 AM PDT

I played through and beat the game as Alexios. I originally started a Kassandra Play through, but corrupted data hit me about 20 hours in and I had to restart.

Honestly, the amount of valid points being made for both voice actors and how there isn't really one consensus is a testament to how well done this game is. I really enjoyed both Alexios and Kassandra as my character and I enjoyed both as Deimos ( I had to watch the rest of Dei-lexios scenes online) and it's just so great.

Alexios is such a goofy and commanding character who contrasts Kassandra's cold and calculating Deimos so well and I really enjoyed this playthrough.

And what I played of Kassandra, I really enjoyed how real she felt compared to how brutal and crazy but cartoonish Alexios's Deimos is.

Also, I freakin love Daddy Sokrates in this game and I think he stole every scene he was in.

Actually, I loved all the characters. Barnabas and Herodotos felt like real friends and I loved how everyone came together in the end to reunite Athens. Everything just felt so well done in this game and I am really glad that, after two years of playing, I've finally beaten it. totally worth it.

Russian Influence on the Central Asian Khanates - Mildly Obscure Setting Discussions

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 10:00 AM PDT

A common trait Assassin's Creed groups have is the constant theorizing about future settings, because historical tourism is one of the best parts of the series. Many fans want pretty cliche settings such as the American Civil War and Wild West, World War 2, Ancient Rome, and Feudal Japan. Most of these popular settings will be discussed in my series on commonly suggested settings. The common thread between all settings in this series of posts is that they have not appeared on a Ubisoft poll or survey that can be easily found (China, Japan, Rome), they are not overly requested settings by the fanbase (see wild west and world war 2), and they all are relatively known enough to be marketable to a broad base. In each of these posts, I'll be discussing map areas, cities, architecture, culture, wars, historical events, historical characters, broad conjecture on how AC could work with this, and any existing lore in this area.

In my posts about China, I have made it clear that I feel the Yuan Dynasty would be the perfect setting for Assassin's Creed, which is when Mongols invaded China, leading many people to have speculated about how interesting a Mongolian AC could be, with a focus on horseback archers and fighters. While Mongolian conquests of China could show a bit of Mongolian Culture, I'd rather focus on Chinese culture and how the war affected them and well-known characters like Kublai Khan. The Mongolian Empire at its height actually controlled the majority of Asia and is the second-largest Empire in history. At the heart of this was the Golden Horde, a Mongol-Turcic khanate that controlled a large part of Central Asia and Siberia. As the Khanate crumbled from external pressure after conversion to Islam, it created two new wings, one that controlled Persia and modern-day Iran, and one that controlled Siberia and most of central Asia. These broke down further into the Timurid Empire that would go on to invade India and form the Mughal Empire, and the Kazakh Khanate that was losing land to wars with Russia, the Nogai Horde around the Caspian Sea, and the Timurids.

The Confederation of Aq Quyoniu reclaimed most of Persia (modern-day Iran) leaving it just in the southern half of central Asia, modern-day Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. The emperor of the Timurids then left his sons 7 khanates which were entirely taken over by two sons forming the Bukhara and Khiva Khanates. Around this time the Kazakh Khanate was doing well but descended into civil war for 15 years over who the next Khan would be, splitting the country between three brothers who ruled successively until Haqnazar Khan won for good. With the Khanate's interior now secure, Haqnazar took an expansionist policy to his neighbors. The Nogai Khanate to the west secured the land from the Volga river over the north of the Caspian Sea, the Moghuls has invaded eastern Kazakh, the Sibir controlled a large part of the northern border and Siberia once again to the Volga River, and Bukhara to the south was in constant competition with Iran, doing whatever needed to stay ahead.
I'm not sure an assassin in the region actually would be in favor of the Kazakh Khan, but the lack of historical records would allow for easy manipulation of historical characters during these wars in the 1550-1560s. In 1560 Abdurashid Khan died allowing the conquest of Moghulistan to the east. In 1552 the Russian conquest of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible brought the border of Russia to Kazakh and Sibir. Sibir, as a result, sought friendly relations which it had and began raiding south to the Kazakhs. AC Lore does not state that Ivan was a Templar, but his son was a Templar Affiliate. It may make sense that Ivan was a Templar and began his conquests to the east for control. The Khan of Sibir died in 1563 and was replaced by Kuchum Khan who then began raiding Eastern Russia who was expanding upon the Volga River. Perhaps this was an assassination to place an Assassin affiliate in power to stand up against Ivan. The Kazakhs kept pushing against the Nozai who was now also at war with Russia and Crimeans until the Kazakhs got to Astrakhan where Russians began pushing back against the Kazakhs in 1568.

At this point, Ivan had begun going mad. In 1565 he instituted the Oprichnina as political police to begin executing and oppressing Cossacks and Boyars. Attacks began increasing from the Tartars (the Russian name for the Mongol-Turcics), and moving up the Volga River. In 1569 the capture of Izborsk by Lithuanians made Ivan fearful of traitors and rounded up 150 Boyars in Novgorod and had them executed. This created further discontent and so he marched on the city with his army and had a barrier constructed around it. He then brought in 1500 riflemen to enter the only entrance and besieged the city, killing thousands. After a month he marched back to Moscow leaving up to 27,000 dead. The arrests and executions intensified as a Tartar Army of Nogoi and Crimeans, along with possible others moved up the Volga River and then west to Moscow. In 1571 an army of over 20,000 including 7,000 Janissaries from the Ottomans who were also at war with Russia arrived at Moscow. Suleiman the Magnificent had just died in 1566, but since he was an Assassin affiliate, so too may have been his successor Selim II. In May the Army set fire to Moscow killing up to 200,000 people and exploding the gunpowder reserve under the Kremlin causing everyone within to suffocate. Allegedly it took a year to clear the city of the bodies. Ivan the Terrible lived and went on to defeat the army at Molodi a year later, but I would love to see this event as a climax for the game, with the assassin character using the fire to attempt to kill Ivan but being injured or unable to.

In 1580 Ivan ordered the invasion of Sibir and had largely conquered Siberia by 1582. The Sibir Khan would continue to fight for 16 more years but ultimately lose. During this invasion, Haqnazar dies and is replaced by Shygai Khan, who is then killed in 1582 and replaced by Tauekel Khan. Finally, in 1584, Ivan the Terrible died of a stroke while playing chess, but perhaps it was actually a little more violent?
Personally, I'd really like to see this setting explored in a unique way other than it just being western Russia. Let us spend the majority of the game working as a Mongol-Turcic Assassin fighting to kill Templars amongst the steppes of Central Asia only to learn that their goal has been tied to that of their leader, Tsar Ivan IV, at which point the fight moves North to help combat him as he grows paranoid and begins executing civilians in fear of the assassin(s) dismantling his secret power structure in central Asia. The unique locale, culture, and still ability to have famous characters like Ivan the terrible combined with a fair amount of freedom in the primary region could make for a very interesting game. And yes, these tribes did focus on Equestrianism and were called the Golden Horde due to potentially Golden Tents, but they also had rich cities for parkour, based in part on Islamic Architecture such as Qasliq, Turkistan, Astana, Tashkent, Ashgabat, and Bishkek along with the major cities of Novgorod and Kazan. Personally, I'd prefer it if the game focused more on Central Asia around Kazakhstan to showcase the region's amazing mountains, grasslands, and deserts and then contrasted with the cold forests in Siberia and not going further west or north than Novgorod, and having most of Siberia fairly condensed.
