The lack of cinematic cutscenes is hurting the execution of the narrative

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 03:02 AM PDT

With the AC Odyssey we see Ubisoft moved towards the RPG elements meaning most of the conversations are happening ingame. My issue is this process often hinders the gravity of the scenarios. In odyssey we often had emotional conversations where facial expressions really helps to solidify the situation. But since the conversation is happening ingame the characters most of the times suffers from dead eye like the ones we saw in Mass Effect Andromeda. The gravitas of the voice often don't match the face. This really puts a bad taste in my mouth as I often can't connect with the scenerio.

I loved Origin as the main plot and important conversation took place in cutscenes that helped the narrative of the game.

It seems like AC Valhalla is going the route of Odyssey and I'm afraid this game will also suffer from dead eyed faces.

    What do you think guys?

Ubisoft NEEDS to show stealth gameplay on the 12th

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 06:01 PM PDT

I think showing new mechanics they teased like using mud or snow on your face and new type of social stealth will bring the hype back to Valhalla. Just some assassin gameplay would get me excited again.

How many times does Kassandra say maláka in Assassin's Creed Odyssey? @ilikedetectives & @misthiosvp replayed the main game + DLC's to find out. I counted 61 in 88 seconds. Enjoy!

So what exactly does it mean to be "weighty" and "floaty"

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 08:04 PM PDT

I swear I've seen these buzzwords 1000 times since the gameplay leaked. I want people to clarify once and for all what a "weighty" combat system means and what "floaty" means, and how the former can be achieved while the latter can be avoided.

Combat, like it or not, has become a big part of the recent games and its important that You-Be-Soft get it right.

The old combat system still have great potential

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 07:45 AM PDT

I don't understand why people think making 200 side rolls and kick 500 times while he can kill us in one shot because the enemy is 10 levels above us is better. And the reverse (10 levels above the enemies) is not better : we can kill all of them spamming the kick button in 10 seconds.

The old system had the benefit to be spectacular and dynamic, while everything is ugly in the new one. It had a unique style that inspired many other games in it generation with the counter attack system (Batman Arkham for example).

The old system lacked difficulty but it was mainly because Ubisoft didn't want to make it hard enough to make some players ragequit. So the timing to make counter-attacks was large and spamming counter-attacks became a solution while this system offered much more than this. We could attack in perfect timing to find a breach, knock enemies, break legs (yes, yes, AC1 offered many unpopular animations).

I remember in AC1 that the timing was way more difficult against Templars and Assassins as they were excellent soldiers and fights were much more difficults. You can see it at 3:00 : https://youtu.be/sGxVIc_Nr4s

Also, introducing the combos in Brotherhood was a bit overcheated (but also rewarding the player taking risks) but by improving the timing requirement to make the combo would be great.

Another annoying point is the fact that the enemies were attacking one by one. Well in Unity and especially in Dead Kings it kind of correct that : in the catacombs of Saint-Denis, the raiders were attacking collectively and it was really hard to fight them all (but if we killed their boss they all ran away). For the first time in AC the AI was smartly using collective power and this should be used again. https://youtu.be/HMmAHRfHOBw

To conclude the old AC combat system is for me the essence of AC. It had a unique style that influenced many video games and it lack of difficulty can be worked by Ubisoft to be more balanced, especially working on the timing requirements and the collective behavior of AI.

Can we have blackbox style mission in AC: Valhalla?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 11:55 AM PDT

I know they're probably never going to stray from the open world style due to how profitable it is but It'd be nice to have dedicated stealth missions back even if they're just side quests. Those were my favorite part in Assassin's Creed. I miss the unique assassination scenarios and the synchronization objectives. Those missions that fail you If you're spotted was difficult but it felt awesome when you finish them.

Will YouTubers Be Uploading Gameplay From The Time That They Spent With The Game Right After The Ubisoft Forward Event?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 12:58 AM PDT

I recall seeing somewhere that right after the Ubisoft Forward event, YouTubers who got to spend time with the game earlier this week, will be uploading snippets of their gameplay sessions online. Is this true?

We fooled ourselves in believing that the bossfight leak looks much better than the first 30 min leak. Here is why

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 12:18 AM PDT

First of all, this does not say anything about how the final game will look, I am not judging, just observing.

When the first leak appeared, a lot of people were disappointed and called it a Odyssey reskin. When the bossfight leaked people talked much more positive about it, because the animations are weightier, the camera is closer, the fighting looks better. A lot of people said it looks more polished so it must be from a newer build and that was also my first impression.

But I compared both videos and came to the conclusion that they must be from the same build and we really just wanted to force our mind to believe it's a newer build. Here is why:

    1. Camera: We get the impression of the closer camera in the bossfight, just because we see the horse riding without the auto-follow the road function. During the horse riding of the first leak you see the line which follows the road and also in Odyssey it zoomed the camera out quite a bit when we used that auto follow function so it must have been active in the first leak. But the default camera setting of horse riding will be the one that we see at the beginning of the bossfight video, which is pretty similar to the Origins camera. Same thing applies for the fighting camera. In Origins and Odyssey we could press R3 to focus on a certain enemy and also in that case the camera came closer, that's why we have the impression of an overall closer camera, which makes the game look more weighty and less arcade than Odyssey. Therefore the third person player camera is somewhere in between Origins and Odyssey, but more like Origins and shifted to the right so that Eivor is not centered in the middle. In direct comparison it's identical in both videos and also the running animations are the same.
    2. Fighting: In the bossfight the player hits less frequently and more thoughtful, so that gives us the impression of a more weighty and personal combat. The attack on the castle is quite chaotic and the player hits more often and randomly to attack and it's only in that video that we see the floaty Odyssey fighting style with spartan kicking enemies half across the battlefield.
    3. Both videos must be from the same player or leaker. They are the same questline and both on level 4. Quite a coincidence for two leaks which happened within three days. The bossfight video takes place before the events of the 30 min leak, because at the time of the bossfight and the beginning of the long leak Oswald is still believed to be dead and then it turns out that he is still alive and captured by Rued. Yes the player level does not show up on screen during the boss fight but you can still see it in the abilities section of the menu

Buuut. Does not matter at all, because on Sunday we will see how the real deal looks like

We exist in a world where more and more story driven games are using motion capture and the lack of it in AC is jarring.

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 08:11 AM PDT

I get it, when you have so much dialogue it is hard to have everything motion captured but when you lip syncing tech sucks and your animators don't have the time to properly animate the scene this just completely takes me out of the game.

Odyssey was the worst for it imo.

why is everyone's hair blurry in cutscenes?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 10:55 PM PDT

I just started Brotherhood and everyone's hair is blurry in cutscenes? See here: https://i.imgur.com/dt9HQvK.jpg

it's very weird and distracting. is it my settings? I have most of them turned up...is there something else I need to mess with or is it just how it is? also having major stuttering skipping issues. My system isn't terrible, but not the highest end. It ran AC2 just fine. Even on low settings with V sync off it's just stuttering and skipping

Again meditating? Please replace it with sleeping.

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 10:12 AM PDT

The new leaks show that the ability to skip time is meditating....again. Why not be a little more immersive and make it sleeping? It was already out of place in assassins creed Odyssey. Origins was the only game where it made sense because Bayek avoided it due to a promise and nightmares.
The new game should make it more immersive and let the player rest and sleep instead of sitting for a bunch of hours.

So these are some facts and confirmed things about Valhalla. What theories do you guys have about the game.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 12:20 AM PDT

I'll state the confirmed facts: 1) Layla's journey continues.

    2) Both male and female Eivor story is canon. In odyssey, Kassandra as misthios was canon.

    3) Layla probably finished alethias simulations and has become the heir of the staff.

    4) Laylas staff changes laws of physics.

How does both male and female story be canon? Im assuming it's either male or female and only one of them is present in the story unlike odyssey where both Kassandra and alexios are present in the story.

My theory is that Layla used the staff to look into eivors memories instead of going into animus. I really can't make out much about the story. What do you guys think? Any theories you would like the share? Also, since Kassandra is alive for close to 2400 years, do you think she played any part in all of the major games or affecting the storyline?

Assassin's Creed: From the Holy Land to Valhalla

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 11:53 AM PDT

    https://www.ign.com/articles/the-evolution-of-assassins-creed

Just read this article and thought it was a nice read, basically a little trip down memory lane and some input from the devs.

At the end there's an unsurprising but interesting mention about how there's no "formula" anymore. AC will continue to change and change to not be left behind in the industry. It's safe to say that the game following Valhalla, especially since it's next-gen by nature, will revamp the series once more. Personally I doubt it'll let go of the RPG route, but perhaps the execution will be vastly different.

Ideas on the next settings for Assassin's Creed

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 08:28 PM PDT

I would like to see the devs dives into a relatively unpopular ancient kingdom such as Srivijaya kingdom or Malacca sultanate. I mean, SEA has many folklore, it could be an untapped gold mine for the devs, story and game wise
