Darby's tweet regarding the Hidden Ones and AC lore in the game

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 03:48 AM PDT

This guy looks like he's wearing Masyaf style robes, I really hope we get similar looking Assassin robes and gear for Eivor

Reasons why Valhalla isn't just an Odyssey reskin

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 05:13 AM PDT

    1. Stealth, although we saw very little of it in the official gameplay is not taking as much as a backseat as before. One hit kills are back as well as social stealth. You even can put up your hood to reduce detection. Events like raids can also be completed by stealth alone. Eivor can also feign death. Here's a link to a video of Jorraptor doing stealth. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r2vINdTUB6k
    2. Modern Day is being done completely different. In an interview Darby said that they're doing something called "Animus Anomalies" where instead of yanking you out of the Animus they're apparently bring the Modern day to you. Darby said that you'll be playing as Eivor then all of a sudden you'll be playing as Layla (I was hoping they would kill her) in the simulation with some of Eivors abilities and doing modern day stuff. You can still leave the Animus whenever you want. Link to interview (skip to 22:12): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9z2q6ypTYh4
    3. Exploration is a lot more dynamic. Instead of the map being cluttered with icons wealth ( raids, places to loot etc.) will be marked with gold blips mysteries with a blue blip and secrets with a white blip. The only quests that are tracked are main quests. When exploring the world you won't be told how to do everything, for example.if you see a locked house you won't be told how to unlock it. You might have to parkour inside, or shoot the lock on the inside from a window. Raids can be done instantly whenever you want, by yourself or with your jomsvikings.
    4. Upgrades/Abilities are treated differently. Abilities aren't obtained with skill points. You have too find books in the open world which give you abilities. Passive upgrades like Damage increase or being able to shoot your arrows faster if times right are obtained with skill points in the skill graph.
    5. Controlling your raven will be different from before with the raven only being able to find items and Eivor using "Odin Sight" which allows them to permanently mark enemies.
    6. Eivor's gender can be switched on the fly. Darby says that like the choice of a female name there is a narrative reason for this which will be uncovered throughout the story.
    7. Combat is more challenging this time although its familiar. Eivor loses more health and now there's a stamina bar which stops you from spamming dodge and making you think a bit more strategically. There are less weapons and armour in the game but they are all completely unique with you being able to use the the same gear from start to finish if you want to. You can dual wield weapons and your fighting style will depend on which weapon is in your primary and offhand slot. The game also has the largest amount of enemy types in any assassin's creed game to date.
    8. The tool wheel is back although in a different capacity. You can call your drakkar, your horse, put up your hood, fish, whistle and some other things.
    9. The Settlement is something that will be a big part of the game. This is where you'll be coming back to alot of times during the game to do things like get tattoos, visit Blacksmiths, rest play minigames etc. As well as that upgrading your settlement will also give you passive bonuses.
    10. More Choices actually have an impact this time. One example being where you can decide whether or not to kill a character depends on whether or not the next mission is peaceful and fun all the way through or whether they come back for revenge.

Parkour looks to be the same as before but according to Game Designer Jessica Maher there will be plenty of opportunities for complex parkour.

EDIT: You can recruit cats on your ship

At 8:16 u/JorRaptor says that Layla is talking to Reb when you activate the Animus Anomalies. He also mentions that Layla looks "tired and older." Hopefully we also see the return of Shaun and William Miles in this game.

I don't know about you but I'm hyped for Valhalla

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 04:56 AM PDT

I know there's a lot of mixed feelings about the direction AC has been heading since Origins, and I agree that this could have been a separate "History Simulator" series but nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed both Origins and Odyssey. Valhalla does look like a reskin, and I'm OK with that. The combat looks crisp and enjoyable, and we get to play as freaking VIKINGS!

I played AC:Odyssey on release but just recently played the 2 DLCs. Atlantis and all the mythological stuff was simply amazing, and I hope to see similar stuff in Valhalla with Norse mythology.

I'm more excited for this than Cyberpunk 2077; I'll be playing this first.

I truly believe Unity was buggy not out of laziness, but out of ambition.

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 10:17 AM PDT

Does it excuse the horrible launch? of course not.. But you can't deny the vision that they wanted to create. I still believe that Unity has the best animation. I know Valhalla is work in progress, but you can't deny that Arnos face is more detailed than Eivor. The City, Paris itself, is incredible. The game is almost 6 years old and I still parkour through Paris and enjoy it the same as day 1.

What I want from an Assassins creed game is just one thing. To feel the ambition they had when I turn on the game. And since Unity I did not feel it.

The variety of enemies and how they all have different fighting styles is severely under appreciated

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 05:58 PM PDT

Finally there are multiple factions which all have unique strengths and weaknesses to make combat less stale after many hours of play. After playing Odyssey recently I've realized how stale the combat gets since all enemies essentially fight the same.

So it seems that parkour is actually worse than before.

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 05:08 AM PDT

Things Valhalla fixed/improved over odyssey for me:

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 12:41 PM PDT

-Less Meaty Enemies, Combat feels better now because enemies die in 3-5 hits.

-One hit assassinations, no longer struggling to stealthily play due to over-leveled enemies.

-Shield combat is back, allowing for multiple play styles over the dual weapon combat from odyssey

-The camera is closer to eivor, it feels like origins now, and this was a major complaint of odyssey for me.

-The running animation no longer looks odd, looks more natural.

    -Actual assassins in the game

-Chain assassination instead of teleporting double assassinations

    -Hidden blade is back.

-Better dialogue options and memorable faces (besides the mediocre facial animations)

What I wanted to be added/changed/fixed:

-More weighty parkour, slower and more like origins/unity.

    -Better facial animations.

There is a sprint button is Valhalla

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 10:58 AM PDT

Eivor doesn't auto run everywhere all the time, does sort of a jog instead and you toggle sprinting. Not sure if you just press it once or hold it down though. Eivor will walk instead when the hood is up instead I've also heard.

Why I believe Valhalla will be an awesome game, and don’t understand why people are complaining so much

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 05:49 AM PDT

Just to clarify, I haven't played the game, just watched the gameplay and reviews. So, I have been seeing a lot of comments saying that this game will be a copy of odyssey, that the developers reused most of the content and etc... but I really don't get why people are saying this. Although the gameplay is similar (specially the way the character moves) there are a lot of different things and improvements. The thing that most bothers me is enemies flying away, but still, this is one of the only things that remained the same. So I will list the combat differences bellow. - No more enemy levels. The enemies now have different archetypes, using different abilities, weapons and fighting styles. - More weapon variety. Weapons no longer have levels and there is quite a diverse holster of them, allowing for many character builds. - Stun system, which helps to make combat feel less monotonous and adds a way to kill enemies faster by playing strategically. - More finishing moves, more brutal than the ones in previous games, adding more weight to combat. - The stamina system. - Health no longer regens automatically. - Enemies are no longer massive damage sponges due to lack of levels. By the look of it, the more common enemies take like 4 light attack hits to kill, which is the same as it took in Black Flag (if you just attacked the enemy instead of doing the counter stuff). And you can still kill them faster by other means. - Bosses don't take 1 hour to be defeated. Even though they can absorb a lot of damage, it's not as near as the bosses in Odyssey. The ones here are relying more on their move and attack sets than on massive health bars. - You can one-hit assassinate any enemy (except bosses, I believe), the stronger enemies requiring an timing minigame to be insta-killed

I understand that combat is not completely remade, but it still changed a lot, and for the better. And not just combat changed. My major criticism of Odyssey was the massive, but empty world, with a bunch of BS sidequests and forts and camps to clear. In Valhalla, instead of enemy forts to clear, there are the villages to raid, which you can still clear out by your own using stealth. But this time, instead of doing the same thing over and over, you can raid the village with your raiding party, which looks to be quite fun. And now, instead of the boring sidequests, there are the new world events, which reminds me of RDR2 a lot. They seems to be very diverse, fun and short, adding a whole new layer to exploration. The developers also added a lot of side-activities. There is fishing, flyting, drinking games, pilling stones and probably a lot more. While exploring, you are able to enter most houses, as they have openable doors, some of them making the player find a way in as all doors are blocked and there is wealth inside.

So, in general, the world doesn't seems to be empty, giving the player plenty of reasons to explore every bit of it, instead of adding multiple "?" on the map with boring stuff to complete. And even if all of this is not enough, there is the settlement managing and plenty of ship, character and raiding party customization. So, I don't get why people are complaining that this game is more of the same. The only reason I can find for it is that they are not aware of what the game is going to have. I know there is some clunky animations and stuff, but they are still better than odyssey's, and the new features are more than enough to justify the creation of this game (alongside money-making).

Fighting style in new AC games

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 09:48 PM PDT

Since the release of origins, i truly haven't enjoy AC as much as i use too, I've been playing the games since i was 5, and have loved them since, I've played every game apart from the little sidegames and rogue because i didn't like the idea of being a templar. I never saw a problem with the fighting mechanics nor the parkour mechanics, but since origins i truly have enjoy the AC games as much, i enjoy playing the old games more and honestly wish they'd change back to the old mechanics.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla lands prequel comic with Dark Horse

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 11:49 AM PDT

Tomorrow (Tuesday) I will be playing 3.5 hours of Valhalla. What do you want to see more of?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 08:09 AM PDT

My session came in later than all the major content creators, but it gives me a chance to look for things that most others didn't. What is some stuff you'd like to see from my play session? I'll be posting as much as I'm allowed to YouTube and will be sharing it here later this week!

Origins useful mechanics that are never explained

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 04:22 PM PDT

I noticed that there is a lot of shit that is never mentioned by ubi as far as I can search, or even by players. Like I figured out that dual swords have a special combo when you do light-light-light-heavy. So kinda in this thread I want people to comment with obscure mechanics and maybe they can be not so obscure.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla combat is built specifically to make you feel like a Viking, not an Assassin

AC Valhalla will have almost no side quests

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 03:39 AM PDT

The problem I have with Eagle drones in Assassin’s Creed.

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 09:25 AM PDT

YOU should be the Eagle, above everyone scoping out targets. I've been looking at footage of ACV and the Eagle basically acts like a way to scope out distant landmarks and points of interest, which is made easier once you're looking down on everything.

But why should I need to telepathically warg into a bird to do this? Remember when running along rooftops and climbing tall structures to mark things on your map was a crucial part of AC's gameplay loop and not just a tokenistic way to implement fast travel?

Yes I'm aware of the Unity-jerk and have tons of problems with that game myself, but the high ground feature was a good first step in expanding on that style of gameplay. Hell, games like Breath of the Wild already feature something like this where you're incentivized to climb large mountains and towers so you can more easily spot hidden shrines or landmarks.

It would be really cool if you could climb up a tall cathedral and then use Eagle Vision to zoom into the surrounding landscape and spot points of interest, like a scuffle happening in some markets, or actual secrets that have to be looked for and aren't just vomited onto the map/compass.

I'm glad the open-world/exploration side of AC is getting some more love but it should be done in the AC fashion.
