AC Unity: I have never been so positively surprised by a game

    Posted: 28 May 2020 05:56 AM PDT

Ok, so as a long time fan of this franchise I steered clear of unity for years, heeding the warnings of all the haters from here to Timbuktu who insist that it's the worst assassins creed title ever. I used to only own an xbox 360 anyway. During those years I played AC1, AC2, AC3, brotherhood, revelations, black flag and Rogue many times. All of those games tend to rank higher on people's lists than unity. Finally I got a new gen console and the first game I bought was Odyssey. I got enjoyment out of it for the first 30 hours or so but eventually got bored and disenchanted. It doesn't feel like assassins creed at all. It's fine as it's own game, but I don't understand how you can call it assassins creed. Despite all the warnings about unity I was always curious about it. Odyssey led me to yearn for a more classic AC experience. I wanted rooftops, historical buildings to climb, my hidden blade back...man I got what I was asking for! When I bought unity I had a feeling I would appreciate it. And I was blown away to find that it looks better than Odyssey (better lighting and clothing textures etc). The parkour blew me away. First thing I did was find the Ezio outfit and it nearly brought a tear to my eye, hopping around feeling as if I were playing a new gen remake of AC2. What I really can't believe about this game is the world. I was prepared to be severely underwhelmed by the map size after playing Odyssey (which is honestly so big it adds an element of monotony). But my god, Unity has a much denser, more intricate world. It has more authenticity to it, as if someone involved actually cared. The game does a great job at staying true to its roots, leading to a new gen AC experience with an exceptionally classic feel. Done raving but I guess my main point is don't always listen to people. Sometimes great games catch tons of hate, and sometimes it warps franchises into completely abandoning their roots. Origins I'm assuming is alot more like Odyssey, and syndicate I've never played either although I'm developing curiosity about it.

What do you think abou AC Syndicate

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:50 AM PDT

I just bought Syndicate and Im loving it. I dont know why people hate it so much. London is beautiful, the gamepley is good, the combat is fun, the soundtrack is a pure masterpiece and the best thing are the twins. They have so much chemistry together. Jacob is fun with his jokes and Evie is more serious and competent. I just think its underappreciated.

God handling in Valhalla - With the talk of god encounters in the game being more like origins and using “dreamlike sequences” to not break emersion, I’m hoping the devs take the route through the ritual taking of magic mushrooms as this was a traditional Norse custom in the Viking era.

Just thought it may be a great way to handle it, anyone else got any interesting suggestions?

Theory about King Alfred in Valhalla after Darby MCdevitts interview

    Posted: 28 May 2020 01:59 PM PDT

After reading his interview, more and more do I think that King Alfred will go through what Eivor goes through, just from the opposite side of things.

We know that Eivor meets the Assassins/Hidden ones early on in the game.

What if King Alfred meets the Templars, and has his own conflicting thoughts and ideals wether he should join/help them or maybe even use them.

I dont think he will simply be a puppet fot the Templars.

I truly think he will have his own well written story arc about what to do with/about them throughout the game.

And he wont just be a villain we assassinate and thats it.

I cannot wait for this game.

Hope we can pet animals in Valhalla

    Posted: 28 May 2020 11:57 PM PDT

We should be able to pet our tamed animals and other non-hostile animals such as cats, dogs! (or even goats lol)

It's just so satisfying when we were able to do this in Black Flag.

It is a minor feature so you misters and missus' developers can still add it if you haven't already haha

If you add it, Valhalla will be rightfully nominated as Game of the Year lol

Assassin’s creed unity’s team when adding artifacts:

    Posted: 28 May 2020 04:56 AM PDT

    AC unity be like

Ubisoft: okay so in this game we have a new collectible which you need to collect to get the Altair outfit... they're called artifacts.

    Me: okay sounds easy enough.

Ubisoft: yeah but half of them can only be found in a type of mission, helix rifts.

Me: sure, a little challenge, no problem.

Ubisoft: you need to get a certain amount of points in these missions.

    Me: okay, sounds pretty good

    Ubisoft: within a certain time

    Me: okay...

Ubisoft: the bonuses are sometimes double the amount you need to collect.

    Me: Uhu...

Ubisoft: ow and there can be a tornado, boulders falling, an enemy plane,...

    Me: great..

Ubisoft: ow yeah and only ONE Artifact spawns per run

    Me: why?

Ubisoft: AND most of the time, the one you already collected spawns!!

    Me: WHY

    Ubisoft: 🤷‍♂️

Bonus: I understand it used to be worse? With the companion app and so on? Thank god I wasn't a trophy hunter yet when this game came out

What mission from the Assassin's Creed series do you think was illogical or stupid or didn't make sense gameplay or story wise?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 07:03 AM PDT

Mine was in Ac4 where you go to meet James Kidd in Tulum. You're telling me that highly trained Assassins can be easily knocked out by one pirate with no repercussions after that?

I really hope the side quests are more meaningful in Valhalla than they were in Odyssey (and maybe Origins)

    Posted: 28 May 2020 09:50 PM PDT

Note: I haven't played Origins in quite a long time, so I'm unfamiliar with just how involved the side quests got.

Seriously. Odyssey and Origins are riddled with nothing but fetch quests. "Help me with ABC and I'll give you XYZ". I want to actually do something meaningful that impacts the world around me in some way! I want to feel like I made a difference in some regard! Not waste 15 minutes rescuing someone or investigating a love triangle or whatever. So pointless.

I need something different for Valhalla. Otherwise, I might just walk away from the series for good.

So which Assassin was the best melee fighter?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 02:44 PM PDT

Skill-wise, I mean. Because if we just drop all all of them into a fighting pit with their full kit, then obviously Jacob and Evie take it due to having revolvers and grenades.

I'm not the biggest AC scholar, but I feel Edward should at least make it near the top, what with using two swords, which apparently is almost impossible to do effectively in real life, and all the pirate boarding action he canonically took part in.

    What do you think?

    Historical Characters in AC: Valhalla

    Posted: 28 May 2020 03:34 PM PDT

So, I compiled a list of historical characters that I believe we will meet in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. I strongly believe that one of the surprise areas will be Dublin, which is why some of the last Vikings I mentioned are on the list. I think that their inclusion would make for some interesting stories.

Note: I know that many sources state that Halfdan, Ivar and Ubba are sons of the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok. However, I don't think that these three characters will actually be brothers by blood in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Instead, I believe that they will be three people from very different places. I think that they will call themselves the Sons of Ragnar Lothbrok as a way of inducing fear into their Anglo-Saxon enemies, because they know that the Anglo-Saxons fear the name Ragnar Lothbrok. However, throughout the course of their campaign in England they develop a strong bond and basically see themselves as brothers. By doing it this way rather than having them be actual brothers, it becomes much easier to explain the whole "Is Ímar and Ivar the Boneless the same person?", which I have seen other posts discuss.

    ---

    English Characters

Alfred the Great, King of Wessex
The only king who managed to withstand the invading Danes. Became king in 871 after having successfully fought off the Vikings in their first Wessex campaign. He eventually defeated them in 878.

    Odda, Ealdorman of Devon
An ealdorman who was forced to choose whether to support Alfred or the Vikings in 878. Ended up siding with Alfred, gathered an army of peasants and defeated a Viking force at the Battle of Cynwit.

    Wulfhere, Ealdorman of Wiltshire
An Ealdorman who betrayed Alfred and sided with Guthrum the Old in exchange for royal titles. After his Viking allies were defeated in 878, he was stripped of his role as Ealdorman by Alfred.

    Ecgberht I, King of Northumbria
Ruled as a puppet king and tax collector for the Vikings from 867 until 872 where he was deposed by the Northumbrians and fled to Mercia. He died in Mercia the following year.

    Wulfhere, Archbishop of York
Worked very closely with the puppet king Ecgberht I and fled with him to Mercia in 872 when he was deposed by the Northumbrians. He was called back to York the following year to continue his work.

    Ricsige, King of Northumbria
Became king after Ecgberht I was deposed but quickly lost Southern Northumbria to the Vikings in 873 or 874. He ruled Northern Northumbria in his own right until he passed away in 876.

    Ecgberht II, King of Northumbria
Became king after Ricsige when passed away in 876. Like his predecessor, he only ruled the northern half of Northumbria and did so most likely until 895.

    Burgred, King of Mercia
King of Mercia for over twenty years. After successfully paying the Vikings to leave Mercia in 871, he was overwhelmed and forced to flee England when they invaded Mercia again in 874.

    Ceolwulf II, King of Mercia
Ruled Mercia as a puppet king for the Vikings between 874 and 879. He was mostly given control of the western half of Mercia since the Vikings themselves took control of the eastern half.

    Oswald, King of East Anglia
Ruled East Anglia for a few years as a puppet king for the Vikings after they killed Edmund the Martyr in 869.

    Æthelred, King of East Anglia
Succeeded Oswald as King of East Anglia at some point during the 870's. Like his predecessor, Æthelred ruled as a puppet king for the Vikings until he was replaced as ruler by Guthrum the Old.

    Donyarth, King of Cornwell
Ruler of Dumnonia between 865 and 875. Collaborated with the Vikings in 875 when they were raiding coastal towns in Wessex. He is believed to either have drowned or been executed for his scheming.

    ---

    Scandinavian and Irish Viking Characters

    Halfdan Ragnarsson
A Scandinavian Viking and a commander of the Great Heathen Army who participated in the conquests of Northumbria, East Anglia and Mercia as well as the failed conquest of Wessex in 871. Ruled Southern Northumbria as king from 876 to 877, and potentially Dublin as well between 875 and 877. He died in 877 while trying to reclaim Dublin from Bárid mac Ímair.

    Ivar the Boneless AKA Ímar
An Irish Viking and a commander of the Great Heathen Army who became King of Dublin in 857. He participated in the conquests of Northumbria and East Anglia after which he returned to Dublin and continued his rule until 873 where he died of illness.

    Guthrum the Old
A Scandinavian Viking and a commander of the Great Heathen Army who invaded Wessex on multiple occasions between 875 and 878 where he was finally defeated at the Battle of Edington. He became King of East Anglia in 879 on the condition that he would be christened and renounce his pagan beliefs.

    Ubba Ragnarsson
A Scandinavian Viking and a commander of the Great Heathen Army who participated in the conquests of Northumbria, East Anglia and Mercia. He aided Guthrum the Old in his campaign against Wessex between 875 and 878 but died during the Battle of Cynwit.

    Oistin mac Amlaíb
Became co-king of Dublin in 873 alongside his cousin after the death of his uncle, Ivar the Boneless. He only ruled Dublin until 875 when he was killed by Halfdan Ragnarsson who wanted to claim his "brother's" (Ivar the Boneless) kingdom for himself.

    Bárid mac Ímair
Became co-king of Dublin in 873 alongside his cousin after the death of his father, Ivar the Boneless. After losing control of Dublin to Halfdan Rangarsson in 875, Bárid then reclaimed Dublin in 877 and defeated and killed Halfdan when the latter returned to reclaim Dublin again. Bárid himself ruled Dublin until he was killed in 881.

    Harald Fairhair, King of Norway
Ruled as King of Norway between 872 and 930.

Let me know if you have some ideas for other historical characters that we might meet in Valhalla!

Are tailing and eavesdropping part of Assassin's Creed

    Posted: 28 May 2020 01:54 PM PDT

I hated these missions, they were tedious and annoying but do they still have place in assassin's creed? I think AC has lost a little identity and is focusing on being a warrior in the assassin's creed world rather than being an assassin in the world. Part of an assassin is being able to sneak around, use the shadows, hide in plain sight etc to get information and achieve kills. So could and should they return?

I think they should. Not the amount they used to have and maybe reworked a little but I'd still like to see it back. Hopefully it'll add to being an Assassin. To those who don't like being an assassin go play a different game.

Assassin's creed is about being an assassin and working in the shadows to protect people from templar/order of ancients, not some overpowered public warrior who announces themselves to the world.

    History Timelines and Memory Sequences

    Posted: 29 May 2020 12:12 AM PDT

So this is something that just needed to get off my chest.

Considering Darby has stated that Valhalla will be more grounded and take a more historical approach, I hope the time periods and memory sequence system from the older games make a return. In that system, each set of plot and historical events took place within each 'sequence' made up of multiple memories (Origins had this to some extent with its 'Acts') and these sequences actually made sense lore wise as you had to synchronize with the ancestor/PoI's memories from the last stable one in proper order in order to be able to access their later memories.

Speaking of time periods, this is another one of those sins of Odyssey... the time period is all over the place. We only get one timeline tag, that is 431 BCE, and are forced to piece together the game's timeline through in game events which if I recall correctly, there are only 4.

    Game start - 431 BCE.

Plague of Athens - 429 BCE (Wasted as it was only used as a means to set up Perciles' assassination instead of being an entire Act in itself).

Battle of Sphacteria - 425 BCE (Wasted, not depicted in a proper manner and felt like a generic conquest battle).

Battle of Amphipolis - 422 BCE (Wasted, same as above).

Persian advances and involvement in the Pelop War - Between 420 BCE and 410 BCE, LotFB. This one was fine I guess but it's vague.

Odyssey story is all over the place and even feels contradictory at times when you factor in the DLC and other stuff.

I sincerely hope Valhalla will have a proper cohesive plot structure with proper time and historical even representation.

Settlement location in AC Valhalla, hypothesis

    Posted: 28 May 2020 10:14 PM PDT

I've been pouring over various maps of England, keeping in mind which Kingdoms existed at the time (Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia, and Northumbria), was well as what Darby said about the settlement being a hub. With the idea that a hub is usually centralized to its "spokes" I'm guessing our settlement will be in NE Mercia, somewhere between present day Nottingham and Leicester. This region has access to riverways that basically run every direction, and connect both to the North Sea, and the Atlantic. Additionally, we know that the Nottingham area was conquered by Vikings in 867 (game starts in 873).

Here is the map of rivers in England. It's kind of mind boggling that they ever managed to fight off the invasions with how many rivers there are. https://www.wwf.org.uk/uk-rivers-map

Valhalla and Eivor's link to the brotherhood

    Posted: 28 May 2020 07:15 PM PDT

I have this crazy idea that Eivor's link and narrative to the future brotherhood is two-fold, first the way they talk about him and his philosophies with the hidden blade, being conspicuous but at the same time we will see some form of social stealth return, I think Eivor will set the foundation for unseen but feared and will reveal the hidden ones to the order of ancients officially, anyway that's the idea.

Leonardo Da Vinci's flying machine in AC iii

    Posted: 28 May 2020 08:06 PM PDT

Was doing a Homestead mission with Leonardo's flying machine, ended up in the lake, and couldn't figure out what went wrong. Then I remembered one mission from Assassin's Creed II and realized it had bonfires and that there were no bonfires to support Connor's flight on the frontier.

What are your thoughts on Assassins Creed 2?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 09:48 AM PDT

For some context, I've just just finished AC2 for the first time through the Ezio collection. I've come back to the series after only playing through the first game not long after release and the opening of AC3 which I lost interest in quite quick.

I was a fan of AC1 and enjoyed getting back into the series. Florence was stunning and Ezio was an appealing protagonist. I like the new features added and the early story was intriguing.

However, even with so many positives the gameplay became really repetitive and I was disappointed with the mission design. This became apparent especially in Venice even though again it was a stunning place to visit. I just wanted to finish the story and it became a bit of a drag.

Then came to the homecoming to Florence...

Assassinate 9 lieutenants!? Are you kidding me! To be fair, at least some of these made you sneak around a little before assassinating the target.

Anyway, I mostly enjoyed this game and I'm looking forward to find out what the Hell is going on with that ending in the Vatican.

What are your guys thoughts on this game?

My thoughts on Syndicate after beating the main story.

    Posted: 28 May 2020 07:48 PM PDT

Haven't done the WW1 missions or the Last Maharaja or Jack the Ripper dlc yet but will get to it. Personally I loved the game though my main problem with it is the story mostly how the Twins are handled. I like that Evie having to clean up Jacob's mess after his missions but what bugged me is that there never was one for Evie. If her whole character was to stop being so ridged with her father's teachings and denying all personal attachments then there should have been quests where Evie's actions cause Templars to crack down on allies forcing Jacob to save them. They could have done this when Henry gets captured but instead we get her being pissy while she drives Singh around. Another work around would be the ability to switch between them during missions and giving them more diverse skill trees. Maybe Playing as Jacob decreases Templar presence in a zone but increases their level or amount of snipers in another while Evie would decrease the presence less than Jacob but enemies in other zones would be more lax or something. I'm also a fan of Starrick but he should have been in the game more I mean we only see one clip of him at the beginning then we don't see him till after we kill Elliotson. At least his boss fight was interesting.

I actually like the modern plot in this one but what annoys me is that I found out after this game the Juno plot is resolved in the comics and Shaun and Rebecca are just gone. Is the new protagonist for the modern day plots any good or is she like a blander Desmond?

Overall since I'm a huge fan of the Victorian era my bias towards this game might be showing but still I feel this game is good. I plan on playing Origins next and might get Odyssey if it's on sale but I may skip it like I did Unity.

Just starting the first game...some questions?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 10:49 PM PDT

Just started the first game. I'm at the mission where you need to get to Damascus to talk to someone...

Am I supposed to go to each viewpoint to complete it and then go? Also, why do the guards care who I am if I ride by peacefully in this section? Isnt this like right near where I live with the assasin's order or is that all top secret even among people who live there?

I just killed 2 guards at a viewpoint because they saw me and I couldn't get away. Does it matter?

Assassin's Creed Syndicate is the worst game of the whole Franchise.

    Posted: 29 May 2020 01:00 AM PDT

I have played all the games in the franchise, from the first to Odyssey and looking forward to Valhalla. I still think that Syndicate is the absolute worse game of the Series. - Boring and forgettable story - Really bad protagonists - Forgettable secondary characters - The whole map is so bland. It's filled with roads and concrete. It has no colors, no flavor, it's always dark, rainy, cloudy... this feels nothing like a great Assassin's Creed setting with beautiful cities, tiled rooftops to parkour on, and memorable places - Grappling hook... Seriously ? - Lack of side activities or side missions - Lack of Swords... I mean, AC without swords. Ok. - Combat is bad - Parkour is a downgrade from Unity, it doesn't feel the same - Too modern for an Assassin's Creed game I guess stealth is the only good thing in this game...
