I wish the current games would focus on the story a bit more

    Posted: 18 Oct 2019 12:58 AM PDT

Tonight, I decided to reply AC2 to see how well it aged. (I wasn't aware this sub was doing the same, what a funny coincidence) Although the gameplay isn't anything AMAZING, I began to realize what made this game blow me away when I first played it a number of years ago. The story, the characters, the mysterious atmosphere. You worked from the shadows, hiding in plain sight as you searched to uncover this deadly conspiracy and assassinate those behind it. Every target feels unique and memorable, and somehow important to the overall narrative. You infiltrate a Templar meeting and see this guy there that you recognize, so you head off to find him. You kill him, but it turns out his family is planning to murder the Doge. You kill the guy sent to kill the Doge but fail to stop the plot, and they appoint a Templar as the next Doge. Basically, every mission feels connected, with plenty of buildup. In the current games, they just kind of introduce a target only to have you assassinate them right away. No real buildup, no involvement in the larger conspiracy. They all feel the same too. What happened to soaring high over the rooftops of Venezia as music swelled up? What happened to infiltrating a carnival full of fireworks and entertainers and shooting a dude using a miniature arm cannon? What happened to confronting your family's betrayer in the middle of a crowd and going ham on his ass? I miss the cinematic flair these games once had.

And where are my memorable side characters? We all remember the likes of Uncle Mario, Bartolomeo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Caterina Sforza. We do get some, but they hardly appear enough to make an impact.

Basically, what I am trying to say is, it feels like the main story is neglected nowadays in favor of creating an open-world playground. I am not saying the new games are bad, far from it. The gameplay is solid, the environment is gorgeous and fun to explore, and the protagonists remain likeable. I just wish they brought back that extra 'oomph' the old games had. Sacrifice a few dozen boring sidequests to create an epic, atmospheric story full of mystery and intrigue. AC2 (and many of the other games) made me feel like I was playing an interactive movie. I miss that feeling.

    More classic assassins robes please!!

    Posted: 18 Oct 2019 01:43 AM PDT

I get that the ACO and... ACO are set before the assassins properly started and they are trying to go outfits commonly used in those time periods but I want more classic looking robes for the next game! I like being the only person in the streets outlandishly dressed yet somehow still incognito! It also makes me feel like I am part of the order when I have the robes! Anyone else feel like this

    The World of AC Vikings

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 07:40 PM PDT

We still don't know, what period, map or (rough) story will be in the AC Vikings game. Heck, we even don't know how the game will be named, or even confirmed it's going to be about Vikings (although we can assume that, knowing high credibility of Jason Schreier). Still, we can discuss what it could, and should be. And this post of mine is an attempt in this area. Hope you'll find it interesting.

    Wide gaps

Period - start: 790s, beginning of Viking raids (including Lindisfarne in 793); end: 1066, death of Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge. Area – from Newfoundland to Kiev Ruthenia, and from Nordkap to Andalus and Constantinople. This (790s-1060s) is a gap we can work with – and which need to be narrowed down. And that's what details below should help with.

    Locations & Cultures

We can't have AC game without historical locations, so let's list possible (or even, obligatory in my humble opinion) ones.

Another issue is various cultures. I'm afraid game limited to Vikings might be too niche. Odyssey worked with single culture, because it was a very rich one, and actually diverse (even if limited only to Athens vs Sparta). But Origins were enriched by inclusion of three cultures, and IMHO this is the direction Vikings game should go with.

    PS. Scenarios are explained below.

    Scandinavia (culture: Viking/Norse)

Norway: Kaupang - major trade emporium, used since 780s-810s until 960s-970s; Skiringsal - nearby, estate and burial place of first Norwegian kings, abandoned ca.900 (ruin could be used in late scenarios); Nidaros - founded in 997, viable for very late scenario; Kungahälla - also viable for late scenario.

Denmark: Hedeby - major trade emporium, extant between 770s and 11th century, viable for every scenario and IMHO a must; Roskilde - inhabited since 6th century at least, in late 10th century become center of Danish state. Viable in every scenario, but best for late ones; Ribe - oldest extant town in Scandinavia, since early 10th century also location of first Christian see. Viable for every scenario; Arhus - another town with long history; Jelling - first royal seat; Lund - early Christian centre, established in 990s - viable only for very late scenario[ various ring fortresses

Sweden: Uppsala and Sigtuna - major political and religious centres; Birka - major trade emporium, abandoned in 970s; Paviken - minor trade outpost at Gotland; Kopingsvik

I guess map would have to be cut somewhere in the (not inhabited) north, although these could be included for wilderness only, and maybe some Isu locations underground.

South & east coasts of Baltic (cultures: Slavic, Norse, German, Baltic/Prussian, Esto-Finnic)

Jomsborg – seat of Viking "warrior order". Very interesting and useful storywise (IMHO a must), but established only in mid-10th century (destroyed in 1043). Would move period gap to 960s-1040s.

Truso - major, multi-cultural trade emporium, declined in 11th century. Viable for every scenario.

Arkona and Radegast - major religious-political centres of Polabian Slavs.

Gniezno - first capital of Poles, viable in late scenario due to historical reasons (Piast dynasty being involved in conflict).

Rerik - Germano-Slavic trade emporium, destroyed in 808. Viable for very early scenario, but ruins could be included in later ones.

    Ruthenia, Rus' (cultures: Slavic, Norse)

Great Novgorod, Izborsk, Old Ladoga - mostly established in mid to late 9th century, so not viable for earliest scenarios.

Kiev - in my opinion, way too far for inclusion.

South coast of North Sea (culture: German/Dutch)

Hamburg and Magdeburg - major political and Christian centres of northern Holy Roman Empire since early 9th century.

Dorestad - major trade emporium in modern Netherlands, declined after Viking raid in 834. Viable for early scenarios.

The Isles (cultures: Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Norse)

York (Jórvik) - major city in western England, controlled by Vikings between 860s and 954. Viable for every scenario.

Plenty of other locations. However, inclusion of whole British isles (including London) would be IMHO too difficult.

Ireland: again, plenty of interesting locations, including Norse Dublin.

Orkney islands - a Norse earldom there since 890s. Shetland and Faroe could be included in the map as well.

Additional cultures: Latin (Christian clergy, monks, missionaries) and Arab/Muslim (merchants in trade emporiums).

Iceland, Greenland, North America (cultures: Norse, Inuit, Native American)

Iceland was settled in 870s, but organized itself only in 930, with establishment of Althing. Greenland was settled by Norse in 980s, and Vinland (Newfoundland?) around 20 years later (more here). If we want to include these in the game (even as DLC, see below), it won't work with early scenarios.

    Raids?

One of players' expactations about AC Vikings are raids, which are symbolic for the period. Thing is, I'm really not sure how they could be included (well) in the open-world game, where protagonist mostly travels (by land) solo. Also, to include raids in open-world, Ubisoft would have to include many areas outside direct Norse influence, like north-west coast of modern France, or deep into French & Dutch rivers. Not even mentioning coasts of Spain, or Constantinople. I don't think it's possible.

That's why in my opinion, raids should be included as hand-crafted missions in separate areas, like in pre-Origins AC games, especially AC 4/Rogue. These would be mostly linear, although best with some more binary choices (e.g. take out guards by stealth, or storm gates face on).

    Scenario choice

In my opinion, possible scenarios come down to three major options:

Early - sometime 9th to early 10th century, focused around peak era of raids (close to Vikings TV series, see Ragnar Lothbrok) or Great Heathen army. Map would include south Norway & Denmark (maybe also Sweden) and British isles (all?). However, it could be difficult to work as single map, because there would be a major empty space (North Sea) in between. Also, this scenario would exclude Iceland or further Norse exploration west.

Late - mid to late 10th century. Best choice in my opinion. Perfect setting would be circa 965/970 to 985/990, around wars of Eric the Victorious with Harald Bluetooth and Styrbjörn the Strong. (more here), involving also Jomsvikings. This period offers a wide choice of historical themes (final end of Viking raids, establishment of states, and Pagan vs Christian conflict), which IMHO could end in a very interesting story in game. Core map would cover Scandinavia, south coast of Baltic (see above), northern part of early Holy Roman Empire, maybe also part of Ruthenia (Novgorod). Some part of England (Kingdom of Jorvik?) could work as a separate map. Also, Iceland & Greenland etc. would be perfect for a DLC (at separate map), with a slightly older protagonist (assuming we would e.g. start in 20s around 970, he/she would be in 50s around time when Vikings came to America) accompanying Erik the Red and/or Leif Eriksson.

Very late - 11th century (e.g. around Cnute the Great empire, or Norman conquest of England and war of three kings). However, this is after the era of raids, and with paganism in clear decline. IMHO least interesting / unique of three. Also, some of locations mentioned above were no longer in use.

PS. Scheme of various possible maps.

    Question: AC Japan setting

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 09:00 PM PDT

As a hypothetical, wouldn't it be good for the story, such as it is, to have a setting in Japan on the cusp of the European footholds made? As I recall, there was a massive issue with anti-Christian sentiment, and civil upheaval. It occurs to me that the setting in that time period could produce some excellent gameplay results.

Assassins and Templars go to Japan to establish bases of operation amidst the internal turmoil the nation was having. Ninjutsu flavours picked up along the way for the Assassins.

SPOILERS Is Ubisoft going to do something about That person being a descendant of that other person?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 09:57 PM PDT

This conteins sopilers from the end of the first dlc of Odyssey.

So in the end of the Dlc, we see that Aya/Amunet is a descendant of Kassandra, meaning that she also has a lot of Isu blood in her veins, this can make a interesting game in Rome, after the end of the civil war (after the comics as well) why a more mature Aya, or maybe even with Caesarion, imagine playing as the son on Caesar and Cleopatra. Are we really never going to ser a game in Imperial Rome??? To me thats stupid.

Or Ubi just did that for the shit and giggles trying to connect the two games?

What is currently the goal of Modern Templars/Abstergo?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 08:03 AM PDT

It used to be so clear in the Desmond games, they wanted the Apple to put it in the satellite and then shoot it into space to control minds of people on global scale. But that didn't really work out, since they lost the Apple, although... it seems werid that they were unable to find another one, since it seems like there are hunders of them lying around. Then, in Black Flag and Unity, it was all about sages, although Unity's moder day stuff was worthless. Anyway, in Syndicate we learn that their new plan is to reconstruct an Isu, they needed Shroud for that. And after that I'm lost. What do they want in Origins and Odyssey, seems like they're just trying to get Layla for stealing their tech or something, but... what is their big goal?

How significant is Liberation to the overall story?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 08:54 PM PDT

Still playing AC3. Already own Black Flag(+ Freedom Cry) and Unity. All the AC games except Liberation are on sale on Steam and I'm thinking of buying 1 or 2 more. I'm aware that Liberation is a fairly short game but I do want to play it eventually. Should I skip it and get Rogue?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 10:56 AM PDT

Or where would you think you'd survive the longest?

I'd love to live in AC2 Florence and Venice, though I'd probably read and marvel about the arts more than anything else.

What did Altair see when he used his Apple of Eden "one last time"?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 09:26 AM PDT

I think the title is self-explanatory. I'm slowly replaying the Assassin's Creed games and I noticed that the last codex page in Assassin's Creed II implies that Altair used his Apple of Eden one last time before his death. Do we know what did it show to him? Was it just the Mayan End of the World, or something else?

My curiosity is probably getting the best of me now, but I'd really like to know if that's a known piece of information, rather than hoping that one of the games I've yet to play mentions it.

    Thanks!

    AC Unity help memory 12-1

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 08:44 AM PDT

I desperately need assistance with the last mission before I get to Germain. I have to investigate Robespierre and make him look like a madman. The problem is that every guard in Paris surrounds the area that I need to get to. If I were to fart in their general direction, they ALL surround me and I'm dead in the blink of an eye. I watched RadBrad do it and he got it first try by pure dumb luck. Any advice on how I can make it work? I tried berserker darts on guards and that has not worked for me at all. Thanks in advance!

What makes a good AC setting for me

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 04:58 AM PDT

Last year, I marathoned every AC main game, after only dabbling in the series with AC 1 and 2. It got me thinking about why I thoroughly disliked the setting of AC3, AC:Unity, AC:Rogue, and AC:Syndicate.

I think it's the idea of two historical layers. To elaborate - Modern day is boring. It feels like we've plundered every treasure and explored every corner of the world. A historical period can be equally boring if it lacks an undercurrent of ancient secrets.

This was my biggest gripe with AC:3 and Rogue. They were set on a giant barren rock called North America where no great ancient civilizations have lived. No offense to the Native Americans, but finding old arrow heads and maybe the remains of a leather tent is NOT an exciting proposition.

By contrast, AC:2+B+R were all set in old civilizations built on top of the ruins of an even older civilization. They had an air of secrets and cool things to uncover in every city. In Origins, most of the Egyptian ruins were already 2000+ years old before the game set 2000+ years ago had started. Even AC:4 had a very nice layer of Mesoamerican ancient history underneath the layer of Caribbean colonialism.

AC:Odyssey barely managed to squeeze enough Thracean and Minoan ruins to make the setting compelling, but it could have done a lot more with it.

To close out this post - Assassin's Creed is a *secret* history franchise. When they put out a plain old history game (i.e. giving you a fairly accurate blow-by-blow straight from the history books), it is a fairly boring game.
