Assassinations are ALWAYS better than boss fights

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 09:31 AM PDT

Assassinations are what made the series special, and boss fights are generic and boring. Missions where you have to sneak and assassinate somebody are always better than when you fight them head on. Thoughts?

Give me the RPG elements of Assassins Creed Odyssey, the parkour and animations from Unity, a story like Brotherhood, and exploration that feels like Blackflag

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 05:24 PM PDT

I dont care what era the next assassin's creed is set in but I want the best parts of all of its predecessors. There is no reason for the recent trilogy to have worse parkour than Unity. Also, give the character a fixed gender and less useless dialog options. Gender roles are historically relevant and add flavour to characters. An abundance of dialogue options makes the protagonist less defined. Also, give us a character that's actually in the assassins or Templars for most of the story. Please and thanks ubisoft.

I am a woman and Magnus Bruun/Male Eivor was the Kassandra of this game and is the best Eivor.

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 12:34 PM PDT

So much depth put into the role with his tones, and energy alone. I tend to like to play my own gender/sex in games and loved Kassandra because she was the better protagonist, not just because she was the canon one. But I started out as female Eivor, I felt like I was playing a chain smoker who didn't know what she was doing. Switched to male Eivor and haven't switched back since. Bruun is Eivor for me!

(NO SPOILERS) Wealth/Mysteries/Artifacts are excellent change! :D

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:15 AM PDT

I know this subReddit is usually for hate and regrets, but I'd like to slow down for a moment and appreciate that creators turned "?" (mostly filled with garrisons) into W/M/A (full of various activities) and three additional mini-games :D

I like how the game does not hold your hand and that many of these activities require at least a little mind-use. I know that they are often limited in some way, but they are still much more interesting than ordinary garrisons from ACOr and ACOd.

I also like the return of the cinematics during killing the targets from the Order, and the fact that each region has its own unique personal story. Even if you get bored with England, in the meantime, the game gives you access to other interesting regions (no spoilers).

In fact, the only thing I would expect from the next game in the series would be to improve parkour, also a significant improvement if someone prefers stealth (to make it as sweet as is combat), also improvement of the movement itself (because the character seems incredibly heavy and sluggish) and some bigger armor variation (because as in ACV, weapons are found quite often, armor is a real rarity).

That's it for me. I know many of you do not share my opinion, but I'd love to hear your arguments. ;)

New games aren't bad games their just different games.

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 04:55 PM PDT

What made the original 4/9 games (depending on your opinion of 3 and up) great is completely different than the newest trilogy and that's what frustrating to long time fans. For example imagine if mario kart turned into a forza style simulation driving game. They might be just as good but what made the original games what they are is missing.

    Bring Back The Hitman-Style Assassinations

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 12:05 PM PDT

This is my first post in this forum, but if there's one thing I wish Ubisoft would bring back to the Assassin's Creed world are the unique assassinations from Syndicate. Syndicate is in my opinion an average AC game in the franchise, but if there's one thing I appreciated the most from it were the unique assassinations on the targets within the game. Overall the way you'd gather intel in the Assassination missions felt very Hitman-like and it was a fun experience besides having to run around a location just to stabby stab someone in broad daylight then it cuts to the confession scene. I wish they'd bring back that kind of style when it came to assassinating the key enemies and the overall intel gathering in those locations. One event comes to mind and that would be when you had to assassinate the psych-ward doctor and one of the key intel you gather, places you on a gurney to assassinate the doctor.

I'm so glad they got rid of "full sync" objectives. Replaying Syndicate right now and they're so stupid and rage-inducing.

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 11:35 AM PDT

"Oops, you finished the mission but you didn't kill 20 guards in under one minute using only air assassinations and without being detected! Full sync failed!"

Currently replaying Syndicate's "Soothing Syrup" mission and one of the bonus objectives is to steal some documents off a guy without being noticed. Never mind that he's constantly moving, surrounded by guards, and the "steal" button doesn't even work half the time, so you end up trying to kidnap him instead.

So you think you can approach a mission in multiple ways? Nope, if you want full sync you have to do these exact things, no matter if they're stupidly hard to accomplish and bring no logical benefit! If you don't do them, you are punished with a less than perfect score and, depending on the game, a big loud "FULL SYNC FAILED" message.

I don't mind the idea of bonus objectives for people who want a challenge, but they were so badly and frustratingly implemented. I'm glad they were phased out.

Exploring Southeast Asia in Assassin’s Creed

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 09:00 AM PDT

Having previously discussed the Khmer, Pagan, and Majapahit Empires during the medieval era, I wanted to take some time and focus on this region once again in the early modern period and a bit later, for other potential settings.

    First Toungoo Empire

The city of Toungoo rose in status during the decline of the Pagan Empire and continued to rise in the successor state of Ava, which by the 15th century had seen multiple rebellions in Toungoo. Rebellions in the 1490s, something that could even be a game unto itself, would be a major stepping stone to the leader Tabenshwehti being able to take power around 1530 and declare independence. He was assassinated by his advisors on his 34th birthday in 1550, having built the largest Burmese Empire since the Pagan Empire, the assassination caused a large collapse of the empire, only to be reformed by a former ally and military leader under Tabenshwehti, Bayinnaung.

Bayinnaung is remembered as one of the three greatest kings Burma ever had, a large part due to the Empire building, but also for administrative and social reforms that unified the empire. But first, Bayinnaung had the arduous task of fixing the empire. From 1550 to 1553, he retook the majority of the empire that had been lost, with the new rulers of the small kingdoms that sprouted up mostly being killed as he conquered them, allowing him to take major cities like Toungoo, Pagan, and Pegu. Following his success and crowning, Bayinnaung went on to one of his greatest achievements, his 10-year campaign in the Chinese Shan States in modern Thailand. From there he moved south, conquering much of Siam (Thailand) by 1564, and in 1565 moved east to Lan Na and Lan Xang (Thailand and Laos). These regions were further solidified through war as being conquered over the next 15 years, creating the largest southeast Asian Empire, ever. Honestly, I think an AC game with the main character allying with Bayinnaung following the (likely) Templar's assassination of Tabenshwehti, and the assassinations of Templars that control the small kingdoms around Burma in 1550-1553 would be great by itself. DLC could easily focus on the Shan Chinese States, though the game could also easily shown the vast expanses from 1550 to 1565 or even 1580 if they wanted a 30-year timespan for a game, which so far was only close to that with AC2. If Thailand was included, I'd suggest a game set during the:

    Siamese Revolution of 1688

In the 1680s the French had entered Siam (Thailand) and convinced king Narai to allow them to set up fortresses at Bangkok and Mergui, considered to be key ports for the kingdom (though Bangkok was a small fishing village at the time). At the behest of his Greek Counselor, Constantine Phaulkon began open relations with the Dutch and Portuguese. When Narai fell ill in 1688, conspiracies of a coup began taking hold.
Phaulkon, fearing for his life amidst nationalists in the capital of Lopburi who hated the European interference, called upon the French for aid led by French general Desfarges, who upon reaching Ayutthaya and seeing the uproar, retreated back to Bangkok. Realizing his death was imminent, King Narai named his foster brother, Phra Phetracha regent while his daughter Krommaluang Yothathep came to age to rule. This then put Phetracha's plan for a coup into place, and in May of 1688, he had King Narai arrested, his family executed along with Phaulkon (who'd probably be a good assassination). Narai died, likely of poisoning in early July, and on August 1st, Phetracha became King with Krommalaung as his wife.

During this, Phetracha, allied with the Buddhist clergy and controlling the military began attacking French forces. By late June, they forced the French to withdraw from Mergui. The French captain escaped with a warship, only to be run aground and stranded for 4 months on a desert island. With this, the Siamese launched the Siege of Bangkok with 40,000 men and 100 cannons, aided even by the Dutch, they held the siege for 4 months, stopping reinforcements in September as well. After 4 months, the siege was won, and Desfarges was forced to withdraw from Siam, and with this, the new king Phetracha began expelling all foreigners from the kingdom. A good follow-up DLC for this could be in 1690 when Desfarges took the island of Phuket only to be forced out a month later and die on his ship.

    Spanish-Moro Conflict

So the idea here is that it could be a bit like Black Flag, but with Chinese pirates in Taiwan and the Philippines. At this point in the Philippines, the Spanish had conquered much of the land, but had been at war for about 100 years with the Moro people, primarily Muslims from the Sultanate of Sulu that controlled the Sulu Archipelago. All of this ties together with a legendary Chinese pirate, Koxinga.

In 1644 the Ming Empire was defeated by the Qing, and with the former's collapse, the former Ming general turned pirate to combat the Qing. By 1661, he amassed a large force and took the Dutch fort of Zealandia with help from the local "Formasans" and negotiated for their surrender and retreat from Taiwan to Batavia (which would make a great DLC where the Dutch formed a new government in 1664). This allowed Koxinga to form the Kingdom of Tungning also known as Formosa, as a way to help congregate allies to fight the Qing. Thus, he sent his Italian Friar and advisor, Riccio, to Spanish-owned Manila to ask them to pay tribute, threatening to invade should they refuse.

Unsure of what to do, the Spanish stalled Riccio only for the citizens of Manila to grow unhappy due to the threats of the city being taken by a pirate king. This growing unrest made the Spanish think the Chinese residents were plotting to take the city and enforced a crackdown on its citizens. The citizens entered into open rebellion, and the Spanish massacred 22,000 citizens, then withdrawing many of its troops from across the Philippines, and out of their southern fort, Zamboanga. This was a major loss for the Spanish, who were unable to go back south to Mindanao for nearly 50 years as the Moro raided and conquered the islands. Riccio was allowed to return to Formosa as the Spanish fortified their walls and canons. Koxinga was enraged by their actions but died of Malaria before he could launch an expedition. However, another 3,000 Chinese managed to escape Manila and reach Formosa. The Chinese invasion never came, and the Spanish embarrassment and loss were all the bigger for it.

    Pacification of French Indochina

In the 1850s and early 1860s, the French were allied with the Spanish to control much of Vietnam, with the French taking Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) in 1859, giving them access to a vault, and granting French control of southern Vietnam by 1867. Fast forward 16 years and we have a great setting for a game. The French start their Tonkin Campaign, a year-long campaign to conquer the rest of Vietnam. The success here, though, brought the French into war with China for a year before allowing the generals to return to Tonkin and resolve to pacify Indochina of all anti-French resentment, notably the Can Vuong movement.

Cambodia became a French Protectorate following a 2-year struggle in 1887 and by 1893, Laos would also fall into the control of the French and join the Indochina union. In Vietnam, however, there were three main regions of Tonkin, Annam, and Cochinchina. Annam, the central region, was home to the Can Vuong movement, an anti-french Insurgency dedicated to restoring the boy emperor, Ham Nghi to the throne following the Can Vuong edict asking all Vietnamese to rise up for the King. Henri Roussel de Courcy was asked to take care of the uprising, though his failure and a massive increase of Anti-Christian violence led to him being removed from office in 1886 and dying in 1887 in Paris. His absence allowed for the Siege of Ba Dinh on the border of Annam and Tonkin led by the Vietnamese rebels, though this loss was devastating for the rebels. Taking on Guerilla tactics, the Rebels soon faced opposition from Cochinchina as well, and in 1888, Ham Nghi was captured and deported to Algeria, effectively killing his resistance. The rebels fought on for another 4 years, aided by the Confucian scholars, the Van Than insurrection, though their loss in 1892 made many of the insurgents flee to China. With this, the primary threat to France's control of Indochina was defeated.

Following their pacification of the Union, the French went to war with Siam. A breakdown of communication caused French forces to be besieged on a Siamese island around May of 1893. The French thus sent Inspector Grosgurin to investigate Vietnamese and Siamese capabilities, and Siamese firing on his company in June of 1893 led to further French Intervention. The French demanded reparations and invasion of Bangkok, and Britain, having a vested interest in Siam and having British in Bangkok, sent three warships to the mouth of the Chao Phraya river should they need to evacuate British from Bangkok. In July, without permission, they sailed upriver to the French fort of Paknam where they open fire against the French, who in turn returned fire and marched on Bangkok, seizing the capital and storming the palace. Three months later, with no help from the British, the Siamese concede Laos to the French. Personally, I think this would make an awesome DLC, though, unlike many AC games, I think a character and/or the assassins here should be somewhat neutral, instead, just trying to stop Templars and help stabilize the region

Maybe Ubisoft needs to listen to what its designers are saying

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:57 PM PDT

I am sorry this post might sound a bit rambly, but I have some thoughts I was keeping among my disappointment with AC that I want to share and discuss with you.

So I recently watched a video that was shared here by a Ubisoft lead designer - their critique of the first Assassin's Creed (https://youtu.be/qY773hNptRg)

I am not going to discuss the video, but if you haven't seen it give it a watch, it is amazing, shows what made AC1 great while being objective about its flaws.

I want to discuss Ubisoft, people who work there, and AC brand. People like the author of that video GET AC. Darby gets AC. Many people who worked on Valhalla get AC. Even though I am disappointed with Valhalla, you can feel the love of people who made it. And they are WASTED at Ubisoft.

AC is an inconsistent brand. It is inconsistent not because sometimes it is an RPG, sometimes it is not, sometimes it is urban, sometimes country. All those are surface elements. The problem comes from lack of clarity, direction. You CAN make an AC RPG, but you have to TRY to keep it AC.

I was thinking at one point that maybe there is nobody left at Ubi who care about the brand. But then I listened to the Farlands guy video. There are those who care. The way they think is fascinating, encompassing, holistic. You can feel how there are many people at Ubi like that. There should be.

And you know that people like Farlands would never take the decisions we as a fanbase dislike greatly. They wouldn't focus on quantity over quality. They wouldn't focus on Vikings in marketing. They would cut stuff like assaults to polish raids and social stealth, not try to cram in more Vikings stuff than needed. Keep it balanced. Keep it true to the core.

So if Ubisoft has people that would know AC... why is the brand so problematic? Well the answer would be Ubisoft themselves. Somebody from management, marketing, HAS to push for those weird decisions and override whatever the designers and directors wanted to do. Somebody HAS to say "don't focus on fixing broken Valhalla stealth, fix combat for marketing even though combat is fine"

But maybe Ubisoft should listen to what their designers think and have to say. We don't hear from them often. But when we do, like with Farlands on YouTube, like with Darby on Twitter, we know that they are smart, have what it takes, and will know how to make a mainstream game that encompasses many different tastes different AC fans have while keeping it true to the core, the spirit.

Ubisoft, listen to the people who make your games. They have this job for a reason.

I think it's really lame that part of the armor set is completely covered by the cloak and you can't see what it looks like underneath without buying it. What if Parkour is the core gameplay mechanics of Assassin's Creed?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:53 AM PDT

We love RPG games and stuff but let's admit it, we have tons of other games if we want that. The only thing that makes AC different from other RPG games is the history part of it, and the assassination, which is also becoming generic in rpg nowadays.

What if the future AC titles can focus on parkour mechanics instead? Like destructible roofs and scaffoldings, jump momentum, inertia, perfecting your jump timings, using walls to push yourself up, etc. like a physics based marathon game coupled with air spins and stuff. Imagine some difficulties like wooden floors that breaks 2 seconds after you walk on it so you have to carefully plan your steps. Or imagine using rope darts to swing from one building to another with physics guided momentum. Wouldn't it not only refresh the feel of the entire game but also introduces a lot more replayability since you develop player skill the longer you play? This will also straight out shoot back the assassin's creed where it used to be, parkouring and assassinating stuffs.

I just notice that there are no "exceptional AC players". I know it's because the game's entirely designed to be story driven rather than actual player skill but imagine watching a stream where one player gets so good at parkouring that he can perfectly and seamlessly jump across miles of buildings with almost impossible layout. Much like how players can git gud in fighting games or some arcade'y games like monster hunter where players can really get famous for perfecting the environment and the enemy movement, imagine that being in assassin's creed title except this time it's all about the perfection of parkour and how seamlessly you can assassinate and get out of the area like a true assassin would be. Coupled with stealth mechanics and simple weapon choices, there can be lots of potential ways to play the game. This also opens up possibilty for multiplayer since player skill will be involved. I think it will not only strengthen the core value of the game but would also increase watchability for streamers since no matter how beautiful the world is, it gets pretty uninteresting to watch after a couple of minutes when the streamer you're watching is always either running hours across the fields or talking to npc.

I hope that it somehow get there sometime in the future because I can't think of other game more suitable for that kind of mechanics except AC.

Edit: Imagine instead of just holding down climb button while sprinting (which is like holding two buttons while waiting for your character to do something), you get a stamina bar that depletes but makes you faster and faster the longer you hold sprint, then when about to hit the wall you press the jump button to use that charged momentum to push yourself into the wall and run upwards gradually losing speed until you reach the top and climb. There'll be more work to do for a simple climb but that's where the gameplay comes in. Now imagine yourself in a place like Paris (AC Unity) where you need to chain your movement from one jump to another and use that momentum for perfect seamless parkour. great assassin players will be the ones who can keep their speed to maximum while jumping from one roof to another while other casual players (like me) would be slower and probably might stop and fail quite a lot. Suddenly, watching a streamer with Godlike parkour skill will be extremely entertaining and I'll be there trying to do what he does, which adds more game time for me and for many others like me.

Historian’s Take on Why AC Unity’s Paris is so Immersive

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 07:31 PM PDT

Loving Assassin's Creed Unity so far, it really is a much better game than its initial release claimed. What's been captivating me the most is how detailed the open world is (lighting, textures, basic building design*)

I decided to look into the creating of Unity's Paris and found a wealth if historical knowledge that went into this. Warning: if you click the link you might actually think ubisoft got some of the history right/ you yourself may actually learn something too.

How do you feel about exploration in AC:Origins?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 10:39 PM PDT

I currently just started playing Origins, and the only other open world game I've played is Breath of the Wild. I'm about 10 hours in, and I wish the exploration in the game was more enjoyable, so I just want to hear what others think about this. I feel like there isn't as much exploration in the game because of map markers, so it feels more like just traveling from one objective to another.

Is this a common complaint about the newer open world AC titles, or do I just simply prefer explore your self type of games?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 01:51 AM PDT

I've heard most of the community hates the capes and frankly it looks like Ubisoft agrees with the community to a degree. In most of the marketing material and even some of the pre-rendered cutscenes they specifically removed the cape from Eivor's outfit, they kept everything including the furs and hood, they just got rid of the cape.

The original “canon” roles in Valhalla according to Darby [Spoilers]

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 09:34 AM PDT

So in a recent interview with Darby the original idea was to have the male protagonist be the historical choice, while his counterpart would be Layla's presence inside of the Animus. That sounds much better than just being Odin reincarnated, I never liked that idea.

He didn't bother explaining what made him change his mind, but the first idea of female Eivor being Layla's avatar would've been the route me and many others would've preferred.
