The title says it all... Sure feels a little bit like cheating, I guess it is. Anybody else do this?

Remember the Target Videos from ACII?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:58 AM PDT

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzB2ru025Ic

They where a really nice detail and gave your targets trough the game an nice background and explanation. You always get them in the Database before an Assassination, I nearly forgot them because they never appeared again after ACII.

Anyone else liked these target videos? And would you think a return of them would be great?

    *SPOILER* Assassin's Creed 3 and Haytham's "Betrayal"

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 06:11 PM PDT

    Spoiler ahead.

When talking to Duncan Little and he reveals he was there during the intro in the theater, Connor mentions Haytham's betrayal. But who did he betray? I can't figure that part out.

Eivor / Eivarr, name written in runes. New video from Dr. Crawford

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 10:33 AM PDT

Dr. Crawford (the language consultant for AC Valhalla) just published a new video where he shows what Eivor (and Eivarr) looks like in the alphabet known as Younger Futhark, which is the runic alphabet used during the era in which AC Valhalla takes place.

He also confirmed what all our Scandinavian friends have been saying, which is that Eivor is a female name. There is a male equivalent name - Eivarr. He also goes into what the name means, but I'll let him explain it. Link is below, or if you don't trust links, just go to YouTube and search for "Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Eivor in Runes" by Jackson Crawford.

Specific missions need specific methods ?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:45 PM PDT

Hey guys, pretty new to the Assasins Creed mythos and I wanted to start playing it by getting the Ezio Collection (PS4). I was looking to try and complete it 100% as a sort of a challenge, and I was just wondering do some missions both main story and side missions make you complete them using specific methods ? Or can it be done in any way as long as you complete the mission. Also are there collectibles that you can only find whilst in certain missions and if you miss them that's it or can you go back to them ? Sorry for the long question guys. :)

What are the odds Valhalla gets delayed?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I would absolutely hate for the game to be delayed as I'm a huge AC fan. It's only 2 months away, but how can this game not be at the Ubi Forward event?

It's also sandwiched in between Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War and Cyberpunk 2077 all three games are within 5 days of each other (I believe). So it has some very stiff competition.

As much as I would hate to see Valhalla get delayed, I just feel as if it's coming.

    What does everyone else think?

Can't pet the cats in Origins

I am deeply disappointed. I heard that if you crouch next to a cat, you'll pet it, but I can't pet them at all. PC is my platform of choice, for those wondering. Thanks in advance.

Missed Opportunity in the Revolution Era [Spoiler Warning for Rogue/Unity]

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 08:40 AM PDT

This is my first post to this sub so sorry if formatted wrong.

Back in June I decided to spend my quarantine playing through all the AC games. I only played up to Black Flag when they were originally coming out so everything past that has been new to me. I finished Unity this week and honestly I was disappointed with it. Not because it was necessarily a bad game but it seems like they missed a great story opportunity. I'll explain.

I absolutely loved Rogue. It may be because it was my first new game in a long time but I just found it very gripping. To see a character knowing they are doing the right thing betray all that they knew and be sucked down a rabbit whole until he becomes the thing he had fault against. I mean, it wasn't a breaking bad level transformation but it was believable and very enjoyable to experience.

Maybe this is just because I like Shay so much but my problem is with the last mission of the game. It places Shay in Paris just years before the French Revolution which you find out in Unity is guided by the Templar's. He kills an Assassin at Versailles and mentions that they will "start a revolution of our own." Already knowing what the next game was centered around, I got really excited. Holy shit, Shay is the main villain of Unity!

Then I played the next game. It opens how Rogue ended and you find out that you are playing as Arno, the son of the assassin Shay killed in the last game. It was here I started giving the writers props and was very eager to see where this was going. As everyone on this sub probably already knows, the plot of Unity follows a mystery of trying to hunt down this mysterious Grand Master Templar that murdered your adopted father. Shay is never referred to as a grand master but in the time gap between the two games, it would be possible.

The pieces were falling into place, the foreshadowing was wonderful. Arno is a flawed man in many ways, only really seeing the Brotherhood as a means to an end and is eventually exiled from their ranks. Much like his target, he has a strong since of right and wrong even if that puts him at odds with his allies. They both are sympathetic to the Templar cause while in the brother hood and both have Assassin blood on their hands. The parallels are not perfect but they felt similar enough for me to note them while playing.

Then I got to the big reveal. The one pulling all the strings is.... the Sage.... I was baffled. I don't understand why they would lay the ground work for Shay to be the villain and then him not be in the game at all. Why go through the effort of connecting the two characters if it was for nothing?

Sure the end of Rogue could just be a nod to players about what the next game is about. But I looked back and both games came out on the same day. Rogue is suppose to be a footnote then? Just a prequel to 3 that explains how Achilles ended up alone and crippled? It just seems weird to me.

Am I grasping for things that aren't actually there or was this a completely missed opportunity?

Finding the new games uncharacteristically violent?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 09:53 PM PDT

Obviously the premise is killing people, but there was a humanity placed on even the villains with characters like Ezio closing their eyes and what not. I liked that, it made it feel real.

Recently I decided to get back into the games after really struggling with two instalments that I didn't enjoy. I just finished Odyssey and started Origins; both had extremely unexpected scenes that put me off. Origins has Bayek taking a mask with a knife through it and stabbing it through someone's face, Odyssey had Alexios bludgeoning a man to death and having to repeat the scenes if you clicked "I don't want to do this."

I don't know, maybe it's just me having rose tinted glasses but I feel like these kinds of scenes are incredibly out there and not usual for this universe. I just bought Syndicate, I'm hoping it lines up a bit more with what I liked in the games.

Why so much romance in Odyssey?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 08:48 PM PDT

I never had a game push this option so much in your face like this game. Coming from AC Origins it was an incredible experience and changed everything. Was hyped to play this game and chose Kassandra and the sexual undertones just take me out of the experience. Who asked for this option? and I hope it's toned down in Valhalla.

Assassin's Creed Gauntlet on YouTube (Playing every AC Game)

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 10:49 AM PDT

Hey, I recently started a YouTube series where I'm going to play through every assassin's creed game from 2 through odyssey hopefully before Valhalla releases later in the year, I've only just started approximately 2 1/2 months before the release but I have played the games before and got a platinum trophy on every single one on PSN, and those I don't have on PlayStation I've done on PC. I thought this challenge would be a fun idea for me to try and I encourage anyone else to try it as well. any advice/support is much appreciated, a link to my first video is below

    AC Valhalla PC or console?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 11:20 AM PDT

Valhalla is coming out pretty soon and I've got a dilemma. So far I've played all AC games on console, but I won't be upgrading to next gen for a good long while so I'm considering getting Valhalla on PC since it'll be more capable than my PS4. I probably need to wait for the release of the game to see a graphics comparison but I'm sure the difference won't be huge.

I'm more curious as to how you guys go playing the games with a keyboard and mouse and if it is in fact better or worse with a controller? Purely from a gameplay/enjoyment/immersement perspective

Game Design Tidbit: Why Enemies Need to Attack in Turns

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 03:49 AM PDT

Hi, everyone! While I will be working on anonymous reviews of all AC titles from a game design lens, I was thinking I could share from time to time some tidbits why things work a certain way, based on my experience in the field. Hope this will be interesting as a discussion for you and as something to think about.

One thing that AC has often been criticized for was enemies attacking one by one. Now, while that certainly makes combat sometimes too easy, that's not the core issue and there is a certain reason enemies would behave that way.

That reason is AI. The reason most of the first AC games have a limit of 100 NPCs in total is not because the consoles of those time wouldn't be able to show more graphically, but because the amount of AI interactions would make the consoles explode. Even PS4/X1 titles, there was a GDC talk I have seen a number of years ago that has explained that on Unity there is actually only 60-80 real AIs, the rest are fakery of different degrees.

Real AI is an entity that needs to have a decision tree. "A person pushes me -> I play appropriate reaction", "I see a dead body -> I get scared", as some examples of what would be within that decision tree.

So how does this relate to combat? Well, the game regularly needs to process the decision trees of 100 AIs around, but you need a really powerful rig for that to happen all at the same time. Consider that also any number of these 100 AIs could be enemies or civilians... That's a lot. And combat behavior is usually more complex to boot.

So what do games do in this situation? Well, there is usually some sort of combat controller that switches between different enemies, allowing each one in order to go through their decisions. This leads to a situation where a bunch of enemies wait while only one/two attack.

Technically the next generation of consoles will be powerful enough to not need a combat controller like this and let a lot of AI go through decision trees simultaneously... but we would still need combat controllers that would not allow more than several enemies to attack at the same time.

Cause outside of the technical reasons, there are design reasons. We as players would just not be able to process efficiently a barrage of attacks and it would not be enjoyable. So we would still need enemies to attack in turns, and in most games with combat system that is considered awesome they do actually.

So enemies attacking in turns is largely a necessity, both technical one on older consoles, and a design one forever, really. That is not however what defines difficulty or combat quality on it's own. AC has had other problems that affected difficulty and engagement, and attacking in turns is not one of them.

Hope you have enjoyed the read and do tell me if you would like to see more kind of these posts from time to time!

Most irritating troop in assassin's Creed Origins

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 02:17 AM PDT

I've completed origins and I've fought everykind of soldier in the game.... In my opinion the most nasty aren't phylakes or brutes but the archers.... firing continuously from distance. They really made the fight hard ...

    What do you think?
