Gameplay footage of clearing a camp with stealth

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 02:15 PM PDT

This is the kind of gameplay that gets me interested in the game. An interesting note, eivor says the guards here are Vigilant. Just like bayek did in Origins haha

Petting cats in Origins is so awesome because game doesn't tell us that we can do that. I need more features like this, less question marks, more discovering!

one thing I hope they fix before the Valhalla release

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 06:38 PM PDT

    Clothing physics, specifically the capes.

I was watching some stealth gameplay videos, and personally the sort of solid look to the cloaks and capes stick out like a soar thumb.

They don't really react to the player's movements or the environment, and it makes it immersion breaking.

Just a small thing but I do hope they fix it.

I think at this point, we need a story option that allows for a canonical playthrough

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:58 PM PDT

What I mean by this is simple. Before starting the game, you can be given the option for canonical playthrough, or 'choice' playthrough.

When you begin a series as narratively driven as AC, it becomes difficult for some fans to switch to a completely different kind of narrative direction that involves multiple different options and outcomes. I get that it's ubisofts choice and AC has moved on or whatever, but an addition like this wouldn't hurt the game, it would only improve it.

I have no idea anymore what is and or was supposed to happen in these games for the overarching narrative, or whatever is left of it.

It'd just be nice to have the option to play a story with 1 outcome etc

    The Animus Interface of ACV

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:07 PM PDT

I've been an AC fan ever since AC1 in 2007. As a graphic design aficionado, one of the things that really made an impression on me was the refreshingly novel way the game presented of blending a historical setting with a sci-fi interface that made for a delightfully eclectic combination. Pretty much all AC games ever since have implemented this combo and in many cases the abstract manifestation of the animus interface has subtly mirrored the historical and/or modern day setting. I posted a review of all the animus interfaces just before the release of ACO over here:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/assassinscreed/comments/6ikacu/a_brief_history_of_the_animus_interface/

Now with the release of Syndicate, Ubi implemented something I found somewhat odd - the "Press any button" title screen lost all semblance to a digital interface and took a turn to skeumorphism instead by showcasing a stylised metal AC symbol against a backdrop of steampunk mechanisms. I decided to look past it, even though it bugged me. Then with Origins they did the same thing by showing the AC logo against a wall of hieroglyphs - OK, I thought, no biggie. At least the rest of the interface still looks like a memory sequencing device (mostly).

Then Odyssey threw all that out of the window. The only time you are reminded that you are in the Animus is when you enter and exit the machine and you get the Stargate wormhole effect (or when Ikaros flies far away and the world has to reload). All the menus have physical ancient Greek statues behind them and texturing that looks like marble tiles and bronze. How banally literal.

Valhalla seems to be deepening this issue by throwing in serifs for all the fonts (because, you know, for the old-timey look) and pretty much copying the interface look of the Witcher 3 or any run-of-the-mill medieval/fantasy strategy game. The eclectic charm of the sci-fi scaffolding holding up the historical simulation is completely gone and I feel like this is yet another symptom that AC is losing its identity. I'm pretty sure Ubi won't alter the interface drastically before release, but here's hoping future AC titles bring back this little detail that makes AC unique.

Has there been gameplay in a snowy environment yet?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 09:06 PM PDT

Talking about Valhalla. From what I can tell, the demo section was just that rainy Woodland area. But I wasn't sure if anyone had seen gameplay in snowy environments yet.

I Played Assassin's Creed Valhalla for a couple hours, any questions?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:58 PM PDT

    Hey!

I was one of the content creators invited to Ubisoft Forward to try out Assassin's Creed Valhalla for approx. 3 hours. I did as much as I could. Got any questions?

I made a video about the game, which you can see here.

I tried to keep slightly away from the story so I could see the world around instead. It was somewhat limited to an island though, but still a pretty big one.

[SPOILER] Regarding Valhalla's connection to the Hidden Ones

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 02:54 PM PDT

    MAJOR SPOILER

It seems the Levantine Brotherhood will feature to some extent in this game. I won't be surprised if Eivor's supposed "public and grandiose" killing methods bleeds into their ideology.

The camera view from Valhalla gameplay videos

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:25 PM PDT

I watched a bunch of gameplay videos after the Ubi forward event. And I noticed that the camera view is almost always over the shoulder now (or skewed to the left?), whether it's during combat, shooting arrows, or simply moving around and exploring. Maybe it's not a really tight over the shoulder view since it's pulled back a bit but it's definitely different from placing the character in the middle of the view.

I don't know how others feel about this but I personally HATE this. I prefer having the character in the middle because it just looks much nicer. And in some games, the skewed view gives me headache, or they simply don't look good.

I'll use Origins and Odyssey for comparison just to show how the camera view looks different.

    Origins free roam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7q4oowfqnY

    Odyssey free roam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7nb65xwq7s

    Odyssey clearing a fort: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnxFP4OY3zQ

    Odyssey conquest battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3ZanvnZsso

    Valhalla 30 minute gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW1HNqoAGeE

In Origins and Odyssey, the camera view clearly places the character in the middle, whether in combat or exploration. Over the shoulder view only occurs when using a bow or throwing torches. This is good. This works.

In every Valhalla gameplay video I've seen so far, Eivor is always placed to the side of the view, regardless of combat or exploration.

I really hope Ubisoft will change it to middle, or at least make the option available.

will Desmond's son Elijah eventually play any important role at all?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 05:59 PM PDT

will Desmond's son Elijah eventually play any important role at all? I'm asking because you think the son of Desmond Miles would have a bigger role in Assassin's Creed, but he doesn't, which is strange to me.

Do other people think Eivor doesn’t sound like himself?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 05:43 PM PDT

I don't know why but I feel like Eivor (the male version) should sound different. His voice should be deeper or have a little more grit to it.

Eivor is and has always been a girl's name

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 11:43 PM PDT

I'm Norwegian and super hyped for AC Valhalla, but Eivor (Norse: Eyvǫr) is a girl's name, and it has always been. It's like if Connor was named Michelle in stead. It's just really strange, because no male viking would ever have that name.

AC Unity was an absolute banger

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 09:57 AM PDT

People didn't like unity because of the bugs and arno was not particularly enthralling, but now that the bugs are patched it really is a masterpiece. The swordplay is the best in the series, mainly because syndicate had the same headbutt and knee in every dilemma. The world is immersive and very fun, the engine made freerunning the most smooth and fluid it has been. The graphics are still very good, and the customisation was a perfect balance of interesting but not overdone. Sure there are a few things that could have been added or improved but the overall game it top 5 ac.

    I would say 1 - ac rogue 2 - origins 3 - unity 4 - ac 2 5 - ac revelations

Top 5 based on how much I enjoyed playing them. Rogue was just so fun and interesting, in my opinion just an improved black flag, and Shay was cool af.

I really hope Valhalla will be the game to unite the fanbase a bit.

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 11:12 AM PDT

The AC fanbase has been pretty fractured these past few years. Regardless of how you feel about the new approach its clear the AC franchise isn't what it was before for better or worse. I just hope Valhalla can find a way to bridge the two style of AC games to something that everyone can enjoy. I am sure there will still be people not satisfied, which is fine of course, but even if the game can make you feel like a real assassin again and bring some of those classic elements back I am sure many, including myself, will be pleased. Its gonna be a good day for AC fans today.

Assassinations in Valhalla are going to be QTE's

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 03:24 PM PDT

EDIT: ONLY SOME Assassinations in Valhalla are going to be QTE's

Basically the (misleading, sorry) title. It was to be expected, given Ubi anounced "timing based" assassinations, but here's how it looks like in game:

    https://giphy.com/gifs/cjKZbUviv7DJupzu8Y

It seems to be limited to bosses and "high-level" enemies. (So the NPC's still have a level?)

My biggest "concern" is the big unimmersive circle flashing in your face everytime you have to do it. Perhaps they could have relied on the animations instead, like pickpocketing in AC1?

How does everyone feel about that?
