But holy hell is the gameplay beyond infuriating. Running from someone and trying to get on a ladder, nah Ezio is going to jump around and land in the water. Trying to follow a route of wooden landings that you can jump from one to the other nah Ezio is going to jump onto the wall. Trying to do a leap of faith nah Ezio is going to jump to his death. The combat on the other hand is great and I wish we had it back for the modern games. I know this has been covered to death I just had to rant a bit because I'm replaying it right now.

HUMOR: JOHN MARSTON is an ASSASSIN.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 12:10 AM PST

A few Red Dead Redemption details which are possibly connected to AC franchise:

    1. John Marston has a scar on the lips
    2. Dead Eye is simply Eagle Vision but with Focus mode
    3. Marston doesnt have HB because who tf brings HB in a gun fight but he has a KNIFE tho.
    4. He searches and assassinates one by one his former partners just like in AC games did with Templars.
    5. Pinkertons/Bureau of Investigations are basically a Templar branch which wants Order because if the outlaws are given the freedom they will rob, killing uncontrollably.
    6. Money is a piece of eden that everyone wants in this game. So powerful that could bring the world to CHAOS.
    7. We can ride horses just like Altair and Ezio.
    8. Marshall Leigh Johnson is a possible descendant of Templar William Johnson.
    9. We basically got Assassins Creed: Redemption, AC that sets in the Wild West.

Jesper Kyd's scores were so much better than all the others AC composers.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 02:06 AM PST

Basically every song from AC2 and Brotherhood, for me at least, are so evocative, iconic, and original. I feel like the music that was composed for 3, 4, Unity and so on has been so Hollywood-action generic. Sure there's some neat tracks but overall they're all just action orchestral music that fills the background.

I feel like Kyd's work made use of many different motifs and instruments experimenting with traditional orchestral but adding electronic elements like synth sounds or weird effects/distortions used on the operatic vocals. It fit the historical/sci-fi vibe so much better in my opinion and really made the world seem better built. I also think he may just be more talented and imaginative with making some great melodies and atmospheres.

I'd say tracks like Venice Rooftops, Sanctuary, Dreams of Venice, Home In Florence, Borgia Tower, City of Rome, and Flags of Rome are examples that highlight the iconic sounds and motifs I think that gave AC:2 and Brotherhood the magnificent atmospheres I feel have been lacking from the newer ACs.

Bayek is, in my opinion, the best main protagonist we've had since Ezio. What other protagonists were underappreciated/underrated?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2020 12:18 AM PST

Assassin's Creed: Origins was one of the best AC titles we've seen and I think that a big reason for that is Bayek. I thought he was a brilliant character with a wide emotional range and he had a reasonable explanation as to why he was killing his targets.

I am interested in hearing what other protagonists deserve more respect and appreciation? I think that there are a few characters which are a lot better than everyone thinks and there are some who are still good characters but are a tad bit overrated.

AC1: More than a decade later

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 09:29 PM PST

I'm playing through AC1 a second time after playing the original on my Xbox 360 over a decade ago. This time I'm on my gaming rig and appreciating details I didn't notice the first time through. While there are repetitive elements, it's noticeable how much care went into the pilot game of this series:

Graphically the cities still look great and they come to life as you go through them. I definitely acknowledge that I have nostalgia from this time period of gaming (I had just started college when this came out), but I still feel that the immersion holds up. It's impressive how well they executed considering the ambition of the project. Three thematically distinct medieval cities in the Holy Land with roads in between. The artistic direction and quality of execution is commendable.

The combat is criticized as being repetitive, and there's no disputing it can be, but the nuances they've included in a first gen game are indisputably impressive. Instead of countering every enemy, it's rewarding to mix up dodges/defense breaks/ combo kills or testing your skill with the hidden blade in open combat. Speaking of the hidden blade, I love how during open combat, you can only counter at perfect moments, or attack targets of opportunity (enemies who aren't paying attention by body language or who are on the ground). Details such as these are overlooked by 99% of the player base, but they're in there.

Let's not forget how darn good the kill animations look; good lord! I think there's also something to be said for how easy the combat is to use for the layman to have fun while the hardcore fans are rewarded by becoming flowing death personified. I never get tired of it.

I could go on on other aspects but it's an absolute privilege to replay this game in 1440P 144 FPS glory. I've played most of the subsequent titles and had concerns; however I had no problem going back in time to enjoy this one.

One word of warning though, I haven't gotten the game to recognize my Xbox one controller's triggers though. Fortunately I also have a wired Xbox 360 controller still, which works natively but if anyone has experience getting the former to work that would be helpful!

All in all, Ubisoft needs to remaster this one. The creed demands it.

My hopes for the upcoming Vikings game!

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 10:35 AM PST

I am thrilled for the Assassin's Creed Vikings game that is on the horizon. I've wanted an open world Vikings game for as long as I can remember. If AC: Ragnarok delivers and manages to include the best parts of the previous open world games and adds innovative features with awesome world building and atmosphere, it will compete with Black Flag for my favorite AC title. Next to pirate history, the Viking Age is one of my passions and I love studying and learning about it. "Vikings" is one my most loved TV series so having an AC game to pair with it is my dream, similar to how "Black Sails" is like a companion to Black Flag.

While I think Norse Mythology is great, I'd like the game to be gritty and grounded in reality rather than magical. Sort of in the same vein as the Vikings actually lived, like believing thunder was Thor beating his hammer on his anvil. They lived their lives trying to earn respect from the gods and a place in Valhalla, and also in fear of their wrath. The gods have to be an element in the game but I don't think they should actually appear, but rather be that unspoken topic between characters and something everyone agrees upon.

On to the combat. It will be incredible to seamlessly land my longship on English shores and lead raids. Double bladed axes, Carolingian swords, shields, huge battles...maybe the game will include the Great Heathen Army too. There will of course be shield walls, guerrilla warfare, and other unconventional tactics that Vikings actually used in warfare. Some people may disagree, but in my opinion this Vikings game should remove fantasy abilities and stick to realistic, dirty combat.

I know Ubisoft can make the setting look wonderful and accurately portray Scandinavia and England as they looked during the Viking Age. If they stay true to how it actually was, it'll be barren, untamed wilderness outside of towns, and they can add in plenty of exploration areas. I want the world to be similar to the frontier in AC3. I loved running through the forest, over creeks, swimming through rivers, and jumping through trees. You can't forget hunting, which was a vital part of life at that time for survival. There are many of the same animals from AC3 and Black Flag hunting both on land and at sea, and maybe they will change up the hunting system to be more spontaneous and less repetitive.

I hope they add in the seasons system that they introduced in AC3 back in 2012, with new technology and graphics capabilities. I can only imagine the potential of the Ragnarok world with current technology. It will definitely be vastly larger, more eventful and full of life. If AC3's open world was as good as it was, Ragnarok's wilderness will be quite an experience. Ubisoft can add dynamic weather too, like freak storms at sea that sinks some of your raiding fleet or whiteout blizzards. There is limitless potential for the Vikings period and I truly hope Ubisoft delivers on an awesome open world.

Thanks for reading, I'd love to hear your thoughts and features you would like to see in the next Assassin's Creed game.

I think it will be amazing, everyone will have guns and you only CQC weapons so this will make the game a very stealth focused concept

Unity - A weird narrative with potential and BEAUTIFUL endings (that it didn't deserve)

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 10:53 PM PST

I got a brand new PS4 Pro and the first game I popped in was AC Unity. I dropped the game earlier when I played it on a base PS4, and had never really got past the initial sequences. I was really eager to experience the game as it was meant to be : smooth, seamless, tense and fun.

I had a brilliant time with the heavy combat, superb equipments and the really dark, dirty rendition of Paris.

The first third of the story was great, it seemed like it all centered around the simple De La Serre murder, except it wasn't simple at all, and a web of conspiracy soon began unraveling, with Arno and the Brotherhood at the helm.

But then the narrative suddenly lets go of the handlebars. There's no one specific moment, but when you're tasked with tracking Mirabeau's killer, and Bellec is the moustache-twirling, ideal-quoting traitor, it somehow felt...unwarranted. Maybe it could have been a good story beat provided it got ample build-up, the tension in the Brotherhood was palpable and it could go on to significantly alter whatever would come after, but no. Instead it's a weird midway point with Arno killing Bellec and going back to things exactly the way the were, regardless of both Mirabeau's and Bellec's deaths.

What then followed was an setup being pried apart mission after mission, with none of the elegance that the first third of the story possessed. The conspiracy built up in the first third becomes muddled and starts lacking any direction, with Germain, the centerpiece, being strangely underdeveloped.

The ending though, is, despite everything, poignant. Arno carries Elise's broken, burnt body away without a clichéd emotional breakdown. His final speech is strangely sad, like a man who was earnest in whatever he did, but at the end of the day, as a much wiser man, realises that earnestness maybe wasn't the best thing after all.

It's a delicate, subtle ending that didn't need punch or grandeur, and would have been perfect if the rest of the narrative had actually supported it.

That's one of the endings. Dead Kings picked up immediately after, and WHAT an atmosphere. After the muddle of the main story, it felt like Dead Kings was cohesive, and had direction. There is urgency, there is sorrow in Arno, like a fresh wound that hasn't started healing yet.

Leon is a wonderful character, enabling a sort of commentary on Arno from a third-person perspective. I especially loved the segment where Leon is angry and confused as to why a beast of a fighter like Arno is sulking around not saving France. It's such an innocent, childish question and completely rubs Arno the wrong way at first, when he shouts something to the effect of 'You wouldn't understand.'

The sequence with Arno finding the Piece of Eden and walking out slowly was incredible. Combat is difficult throughout the game, and watching hordes and hordes of enemies come at you while you just hold out the piece and destroy everyone, all while a epic choir wails and swells in the background was an awesome piece of direction.

In the end, we realize that Leon is the one who breaks Arno out of his reverie. That simple childish question makes Arno realize his true calling, and again, in a touch of beautiful writing this commentary is delivered by De Sade, while you simply watch a soundless video of Arno reconciling. It was a brilliant ending to a tale (Dead Kings) that was too short to really warrant it, and only really feels good because you know this is the last time you'll see Arno Dorian in an Assassin's Creed game.

Ultimately it's a narrative I'll remember for having amazing, beautiful endings, but feeling a little empty in getting there.

Phew, thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Idea for an AC: Judea 1st century A. D.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 08:47 PM PST

So obviously we play as a hidden one in Judea (can be Roman or Jew) I would rather have a roman Assassin that wants to stop the proto Templar order in Judea.

Map: all of Judea, with some missions in Rome or another parts of the empire.

Gameplay: like Origins with no super human abilities, maybe the builds and separate parts for armour from Odyssey are good, but no choices, and more cutscenes (I really missed them in Odyssey)

Story: The proto templars are in search for a very powerful piece of eden, the ark of the covenant, they realize that there is a lot of self-claimed Messiahs in Judea so they see that as an opportunity to create a new religion that would unite the whole empire under one Religion so they can controle it in an easier way, (exactly what Constantine did centuries after) so they found a young man from Nazareth that can be used as a puppet, so they give him an apple of eden so he can perform miracles, later on they realize the young man is actually a good guy and cares for the people, so they order them to kill him, later on the young man followers revive him with another piece of Eden, that does end with the start of a new religion but not the one the proto templars wanted. The assassins bureau from Rome hears about the proto templars plan and send one to Judea, that way you will go and meet Jesus and his followers, even tho he doesn't like that you kill but you defend the innocent so you are friends with him, after they killed him you begin with your revenge, meanwhile, you continue defending the ark of the covenant in the Jewish Temple, so you found a Assassin Bureau there, during that you found out why the ark is so important, inside of it is kind of a portal to the Isu world (that's why Moses came back older and older every time). At the end of the game you kill all the proto templars and you reunite with Jesus, he says that he is disappointed at you for killing yet he forgives you because, well he's Jesus. At the end you return to Rome knowing that the ark is safe (Untill the sack and destruction of the temple 40 years later, but that's another story)

Dlc: the first one could be about the Assassins moving to Masyaf, founding a big bureau there, (connecting the hidden ones with the Assassins of Altair a great way to explain why they are there in AC1, I know that's not the historical reason but this could be cool) The second Dlc would be you going to the portal in the ark going to an actual Isu city, no simulations like Odyssey but a real Isu city, so the portal is actually a wormhole that let's you timetravel.

What do you guys think about it, would you like it? Would you change something?

Target assassinations should be different than killing a normal NPC

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 01:35 PM PST

Killing main targets shouldn't feel as similar as killing a normal NPC. They need to feel unique and contain heavy cinematic elements.

Remember how Assassin's Creed Unity handled Bellic's assassination? A multiple stage boss battle with different phases and cinematic cut scenes. now compare this to killing the crocodile in Assassin's Creed Origins. Yes there was an interrogation cutscene but the fight itself was the same thing you do throughout the entire game.

This is not a criticising post towards the last two games but in Odyssey, if i'm not wrong there were about 42 targets. neither are memorable since almost non of them has any specific cut scene or memorable location, dialogue etc. . Killing them felt exactly like killing a normal enemy... . Not gonna say we need to return to the way of the older games but the older titles handled these aspects much better.

I wish the new game returns to the roots of the franchise by putting more focus on the said stuff.

How is Layla able to relieve Kassandra's memories?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 10:09 PM PST

So I may have missed something since Kassandra is considered the canon character and as far as I know Layla isn't her descendant. So how is Layla able to live Kassandra's memories if Kassandra was still alive? I've googled it and I can't seem to find an answer it just says she relives her memories after finding the spear with the help of Victoria.

AC3 Remastered: are there no collectibles or reasons to explore?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 09:19 PM PST

I played Black Flag on PC and loved it so much. My favorite thing to do was to just run around, explore, find loot chests, find shanties, happen upon thieves to chase down, sail around and explore islands, find buried treasures, do assassination contracts, kill people, etc.

But I got Assassin's Creed III for the Nintendo Switch and there seems to be nothing to do outside of the missions or killing people or animals. I've synchronized most points on the map and I don't see any icons for anything to do. It doesn't help that I am not finding the main story very compelling so the main missions are boring me a bit. Will there every be more to the map or is this the whole game?

For reference, I just finished Sequence 3: The Braddock Expedition.

Assassin Creed unity has the worst writing ever in any Assassin creed game other than syndicate

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 04:44 PM PST

at least syndicate didn't took itself seriously...

co op are open from the start, infact most missions are open from the start. so let's ignore the cluttered with garbage map (another bad design) since everything is open it's also confusing, there is no time progression. I had to actually find a timeline quest order someone made, and suddenly doing main campaign alongside co op and a couple of other missions like murder mystery made sense. they give us a game inside a world in the middle of hunger, war and a lot of hate. and then they give us Arno and Elise with almost zero connection to all of it. every co op mission (those were kinda half decent actually) should have been inside the main campaign, and Arno and Elise should have been a major/important part of it all.

nothing in this game matters, the real world effects are next to non existence. Unity has the weakest writing in terms of main plot that I've ever seen! Germain or whatever his name was is an awful villain and none of the side characters except Bellec are memorable.

plot has the worst writing ever made, below is my own far better plot that the people getting paid to write, couldn't achieve, for some weird reason...

make Arno run for his life from the brotherhood because they want to kill him instead of banishing a dude who knows everything about them and have been nothing but a problem (their choice to just kick him out was stupid) and join Elise who is now a grand master after taking back control in recent years, slowly advancing herself in ranks and then killing that nonsense of a villain Germain herself to take his place. make her the main villain after Arno starts to fight her despite the love he has for her, going back from Templar to assassin again because he doesn't believe Elise can make the templars better than before like she promised him. forming his own brotherhood and fighting her because the old one he had has fallen to Elise templars who killed the old assassin leaders. make us give a damn about the entire plot! this game had nothing to offer me but a generic dumb action movie. where is my Assassin creed III writing? what was the point in killing Bellec? how about Arno sees that Elise killed the old brotherhood that wanted him dead (as a way to keep Arno safe) and was like "oh damn.. Bellec was right, we were to weak". training people that he helps along the way to become assassins, we see the years go by. Arno and Elise meet a couple of times and fight it out, no winner. sometimes they even meet together to fight someone else, templars and assassins working together because the leaders still love each other despite it all until like 10-20 years they battle it out one last time, and in the game you can build dens and improve them, put assassin leaders, defend them, take over Elise bases. remember how fun AC brotherhood was? (this could be done by removing all the nonsense clutter and repetitive missions no one cares about. this was bad design, it had nothing to do with time or money)

don't tell me the plot above wouldn't have made Unity into a god damn masterpiece story that people could talk about for years. because right now I can't remember a god damn thing about Unity main questline, it didn't matter at all.

    p.s.

love or hate the game, that ending was dog shit and you know it. all because someone wanted a cliche garbage ending. left a bad taste in my mouth, even when finishing copy paste AC4 that Rogue was I still told myself "well damn at least the story was interesting and important" (Unity isn't important to any of the other AC games in any way. it's like Arno is a filler main character)

What's your favorite type of Assassins Creed game?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 10:08 AM PST

    Ex.

    1-ezio trilogy

    3-Rogue/Black Flag

    Unity-Syndicate

    Origins-Osyessey

To clarify, what I mean is that I've notice that Ubisoft has done assassins creed games differently, but a few of them are the same. Like 3 and 4 are similar to each other, just like unity and syndicate are. But 3 isn't like Unity etc.
