One Big Reason Why Valhalla’s Parkour Feels Worse Than Previous Entries (or Short Drop Can’t Be Stopped)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 03:10 AM PDT

I wanted to bring up something I noticed on my playthrough of Valhalla that I haven't seen anybody else mention before, and I think it's a big reason why the parkour in the game feels so much more frustrating than Origins or Odyssey even though those games share so much of the same mechanical core.

Everybody knows that Eivor is a bit more sluggish than Bayek or Kassandra so I won't get into that too much. Both moving around on the ground and climbing is a little slower, especially the mantling animation. There's nothing inherently wrong with this but the way it fits into the rest of the system makes it more annoying.

The physical assets in the game are also much sloppier overall, see my post about climbing trees for some forest jank, but the abundant and jagged ruins that fill England can also give players a hard time. These are just more complex than many of the assets found in Origins or Odyssey, or especially AC2 where so much in that game was very square, so more time was needed to smooth them all out.

But what I REALLY want to bring up is the short drop move that occurs when a player brings Bayek, Kassandra, or Eivor up to an edge that has a surface a safe distance below it. If you push forward the character will simply drop down.

However, in Origins and Odyssey, this move can be canceled if you release the control stick, or it can be overridden by pressing A to transform it into a jump. This cancellation and/or transformation is completely absent in Valhalla, to my knowledge. What this means is that as soon as you initiate a short drop, the entire animation will play and you can't stop it. When you're trying to chase flying papers and you accidentally reach the edge before you press A you will drop down instead of continuing your parkour route. I think this is part of why people found those collectibles annoying in this game.

There's really no good reason for this change. Honestly I think it's an oversight. Maybe they can patch it in.

If I've made some huge mistake and it is possible please let me know, I'd love to see it.

Odyssey is a beautiful, if ultimately flawed, entry in the franchise

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:09 PM PDT

Returning to my third full playthrough of Odyssey and am really taking my time to stop and smell the roses. This game looks GORGEOUS when your screen is properly calibrated, and the attention to detail in the world (even when it's clearly procedurally generated) is just wonderful.

I'm really connecting with the story this time and allowing myself to get distracted along the way. Kassandra elevates that experience through the voice acting and presence of her character in the world.

Each little area feels more unique then it did the first few times, with their own mini-dramas and a life that continues outside of your agency as the player. Like rediscovering The Dagger plot makes it feel like this poor island has lived in that state for months or years and Kassandra is stumbling into the middle of it.

I never got that feeling from Valhalla. It always felt like Eivor started and ended the drama at all times.

Though far from my favourite AC game, I can't help but respect the lofty heights Odyssey tries to achieve. Sure the same flaws are still there, but a part of me still thinks "it's pretty crazy this game actually exists" when you think about the gigantic scope of it compared to earlier entries - for better or worse.

Also, I can't speak to how much more authentic this game feels when you dress your character as an Assassin through transmog. Even that visual change makes it feel more in-line with Origins and the former games in the franchise.

Assassin's Creed Origins is alot better than I remember

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:35 PM PDT

So Origins doesn't deserve to be lumped into the "not a true Assassin's Creed game" hate bandwagon that the RPG games have somewhat earned/deserve. The parkour is fine with actual vertical environments to use it in. It has solid stealth mechanics/systems, only removing social stealth sadly.

While the idea of leveling up the hidden blade was silly and I'm glad Valhalla finally brought back instant assassinations, it wasn't very hard to level it up and be able to kill targets above your level instantly. And while you don't have alot of tools at your disposal, the inclusion of fire bombs, smoke bombs, and darts are a nice way to add variety to stealth situations.

The grind doesn't feel as bad as Odyssey or Valhalla so you rarely feel like you have to do a ton of side quests to progress to the next main quest.

The world itself is big and has lots to see/do, but never feels TOO big to the point that I feel like I spend more time riding my horse from place to place over actually playing. And of course the story and Bayek are some of the strongest in the series.

I don't understand the Unity obsession as of late

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:58 AM PDT

Played it at launch. Liked specific aspects of it but overall I was "meh" on it because of Arno & the god awful story. Just got done replaying it and I feel the exact same way as I did in 2014 (maybe slightly more positive because it's less buggy). Sure, the graphics, parkour, and atmosphere are great but those can't be the only things that make Assassin's Creed great. I feel like I played a different game from everyone else.

    Edit: Grammar

What your favorite AC setting that will never happen? (SPOILERS FOR VALHALLA)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 07:55 PM PDT

So, i just finished Valhalla and kept thinking about where the series can go next. There have been some speculation, even some quotes from devs, stating that Valhalla was the last chapter of the trilogy the began with Origins. And given what happens to Leyla and Desmond, i believe this will be the case. So..where to go next?

And with that in mind i had this idea of an Assassin's Creed game set in the ancient times. And when i say ancient, i mean really old. I think an AC game set on the Late Bronze Age Collape period would be great.

To those not familiar, the Bronze Age Collape was a short period of time that saw the vanishing of several civilizations around the eastern mediterranean on 11th or 12th Century BCE. Entire empires, such as the Hittite Empire and Mycenean Greece just disappeared with little to none evidence of what happened. Others, such as Egypt and Assyrian survived, but took centuries to recover. The few writing we recover from that time talk about catastrophic clima change (floods followed by drought, messed up rainy seasons), economic collapse and invasion from an unidentified enemy referred only as "the sea people".

Given how Ubisoft brought the Isu storyline back to the front since Origins, i believe this period would be a gold mine. There's enough information to build a realistic-ish world, great cultural diversity, a new geographic region (we had Egypt and Greece, but Mesopotamia would be a first) and one of the biggest mysteries in the history, that would be a great playground for the Isu storyline. The downside is this period is a millennium earlier than the founding of the Hidden Ones and the Order of The Ancient, but i think we can live with that.

Anyway, i have zero hopes this would ever happen, since would be very hard to market this period of time, and a setting in China or Russia would be more welcoming to new players. But, one can dream.

    Valhalla, very underwhelming?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 03:02 AM PDT

Am i right to say Valhallas story was underwhelming? Just finished it and the end just came out of the blue with no good climax and it overall felt rushed.

Combat, outfits, locations, graphics, characters, acting, weapons etc also felt somewhat rushed.

I enjoyed the game good enough im just wondering if anyone share some of my views on it!

    My Idea for Next Assassin's Creed Game(s) - 1920s

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:19 AM PDT

1920 - Major Cities around the World
There is emphasis on foundation of Abstergo.
Also, the game can be played in Noir (or grey-scale) cuz the protagonist would have been colorblind, I hope.
Basim was curious about the hidden one's and jumped into the animus, leading to rediscovery of Altair (remake game) and next assassin's creed
I think that this would be a very effective setting, since it give stage for a great & strong storyline.

But I fear that this has very low chances to happen, since this would bring the game very close to present day, and that has never happened before.

    Any thoughts?

The Orlog Dice minigame feels... not really thought trough. (Assassin‘s Creed Valhalla)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:04 PM PDT

I am going for the Orlog Trophy where i play against players in all places and get their God Favors. And honestly, i have fun playing it... until i tried to be creative with it. After gaining some different Gods, i tried to be someway creative with the favors. Like, trying to mix them up like Vidar with Hel or Freya with Loki and mix ups like that. And the only thing i found out by doing that is that i don't do myself any favors and i fact, make Orlog far more difficult for me. In fact, i then just switched over to just focus on gaining enough Favors to then spam Thor to which it works 8/10 times.

It feels as if Ubisoft was creative with Orlog itself, but messed up right before the finish line. Like, why do you give me all these different gods if the one i had from the beginning is the strongest and easiest one to achieve victory? It would've been so much cooler if you could use 2 god favors at once or even 3 which would led to some of the best and funnest plays! But it does truly feel like the fact you can only use one God at once does make it feel very backfiring trying to be creative when spamming Thor is easier and gives you a better result.

AC Valhalla - Simple Improvement for Challenges

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:33 AM PDT

Simple improvement suggestions - On the Challenges, place the progress of the challenge next to the text that describes the challenge. Don't make the player hit pause and see progress.

    "Do fire damage (197/300)"

It interrupts the players experience having to switch screens.

In game currency transferable (real money)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:31 PM PDT

When will gaming companies make their in game currencies (real money) transferable?

I would be way more interested in spending more money on micro transactions if I knew I could move them to the latest game, or get some credit for them.

It's hard to invest into micro transactions knowing the game will end, especially when the "Ultimate" version is already $120.

I understand that micro transactions are there to boost sales and close cost gaps for creating expansions/seasons/etc.

When I retire a game, even getting 25% of what I spent for in store credit on the new release would make me more relaxed on spending more money on in game currency/cosmetics/weapons etc.

I spend a lot of money on in game currency for games like warfare, destiny 2, etc because I know the game is continuously growing and expanding.

    Thoughts?

Can't find AC Liberation remastered, can someone help?

I bought AC Odyssey gold edition and it stated that the season pass includes AC Liberation. I right-clicked AC3 remastered in my library and nothing popped up. I even installed the game to check again--still nothing. Can someone assist me or is this a bug?

Why do most people not like unity?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 09:35 PM PDT

So as we all know unity is one of the less favored assassins creeds, peoples reasons being not liking the story and arno being a lame character. Just curious why people think this way about the story?

And obviously arno isnt an amazing character like bayek for example, but i don't see why people dislike him so much

What was the significance of Connor’s Mohawk and war paint?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:30 PM PDT

During the final sequence of Assassin's Creed 3 we see Connor shave his hair into a Mohawk and put on some face paint. I'm wondering what the significance of that is in that moment. Is it because he saw his hunt for Lee coming to an end or he was expecting a big final fight?
