[Minor Spoilers] Why Assassin’s Creed Infinite will be in the Mongolian Empire

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 09:00 AM PDT

With Ubisoft recently teasing at Valhalla Year 2 and the release of multiple new expansions with it, many people seemed to have missed Jason Schreier's message on ResetEra where he implied the next big game will have an "infinite" scope.

    AC Infinite Confirmed???

While the "infinite scope" is surely just a bit cheeky, Ubisoft has been making their games bigger and bigger throughout every new iteration. Valhalla had more landmass at launch than Odyssey, and the DLC is continuing to add to that. This new second year also seems to fit with AC becoming a live-service multi-year event that will grow and expand exponentially, rather than focusing on a single city or region. The Mongolian Empire fits that perfectly.

    AC China Concept Art

About a year ago I wrote this post detailing why a future game will be set in Yuan Dynasty China. I've previously speculated on the very next game being set in Black Plague France during the 100 Years War, which makes sense due to references to the plague in the past few games and asset reuse, plus it making sense with a few lore connections such as connecting Saint George, Templars, and the Order of the Garter while adding an extra layer to the 100 Years War. Jason Schreier has said he thinks AC Infinite is a few years out, so this could still happen. More importantly, this setting ties in well to the setting of AC Infinite, as the prevailing theory (regardless of veracity) is that the Black Plague came to Europe from the Mongols. Beyond this, in Valhalla, the Brigandine armor was actually introduced to Europeans by Mongols, and the character Ljufvina was a real-life Mongolian Princess who married a Norse Jarl to help inspire trade between the two. That's ignoring the elephant in the room of the concept art and multiple leaks and rumors referencing a Montreal Studio working on a game set in China.

While many people have brought up 2018 interviews saying that multiple time periods are a thought Ubi has, the issue here is that it disrupts the single unified fantasy of being a Viking, misthios, or Mongolian Assassin. It is far easier and cheaper to combine time periods into a uchronia and focus on the fantasy over historical authenticity. While this may be ringing alarm bells in your heads, this is exactly what Odyssey and Valhalla have done. Furthermore, the key to the success of both games, while selling well, was truly in their microtransactions. By having a game that continually has new content and is infinitely playable, Ubi creates value for the player and increases the likelihood of regular players buying MTX. Furthermore, while a release may generate 10 million sales, Ubi really only sees half of that, and then a good portion of that revenue is eaten up by costs and the return on investment. Microtransactions and DLC are far cheaper to release, and Ubi keeps a higher percentage of the profits from both, even if only 10-15% of players are buying the DLC, they'll still make a ton of money. So it seems very likely that we'll see a live service game last for several years, constantly adding new areas and content to create a single contiguous experience that makes MTX feel worthwhile.

The Mongol Empire at its greatest extent

So how would a game set in the Yuan Dynasty China actually be "Infinite"? Well, look at the map. In 1279 Kublai Khan finished conquering the Southern Song Dynasty, taking all of China, and formally beginning the Yuan Dynasty. At this point, the Mongolian Empire was as large as the above map but was in the midst of a Civil War that would eventually split the Empire into 4 major khanates that would exist for hundreds of years. So let's take a little trip through the Empire's history.

Mongolia is situated north of China, and in 1206 when Genghis Khan became the Emperor and first Great Khan of the Mongolian Empire, he started by attacking Northern China which was currently in a civil war between various small dynasties and the Southern Song Dynasty. By the time of his death in 1227, or assassination by Darim and Qulan Gal, he had taken much of Northern China and central Asia. Ogedei was the third son of Genghis and after his regent ruled for 2 years, took the mantle himself and with his brother, Chagatai ravaged and captured the land around the Caspian Sea. Following his death, his wife ruled as regent for a few years until his eldest son, Guyuk became Khan and his biggest accomplishment was raiding much of Goryeo (Korea) and forcing them into becoming a de facto vassal. His wife briefly ruled as regent until Mongke from the Toulid line was elected as Khan, and his 8 years' time saw him conquer Georgia and Persia while in lore sack Masyaf as an act of revenge. By this time, the Horde had already moved across Siberia and captured Kyiv and Moscow, turning Novgorod into a de-facto vassal as well and allegedly allowing the city of Kitezh to disappear. Furthermore, Tibet and Kashmir were taken by the Mongols, and Mongolian influence in Tibet would eventually lead to the creation of the Dali Lama as a way to legitimize Tibetan independence from the Ming Dynasty. When Mongke died in 1259, his son Ariq claimed the throne as the son of Mongke and grandson of Genghis. His brothers Kublai and Hulagu came back from abroad and claimed the throne for themselves. After a several-year civil war, Kublai Khan became the great Khan and spent the next decade conquering the remains of the Song Dynasty in Southern China.

Despite the Mongol Empire reaching its greatest extent at this point in 1279, they continued to try to go further. In 1221, and 1254 the Mongols attempted to invade the Delhi Sultanate that controlled northern India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The Delhi Sultan eventually allied with Mongke and later Hulagu to help him keep Delhi Safe, and Mongol soldiers entered India, helped govern provinces, and aided in battle to expand the Delhi Sultanate. The Chagatai Khanate of central Asia would then attempt multiple invasions throughout the 14th century.

Throughout the 13th century, South East mainland Asia was dominated by the competing Khmer and Pagan Empires. The Khmer had largely taken Champa, which is Southern Vietnam and Laos. Thus when the Mongols invaded Pagan, Khmer, and Dai Viet, the kingdoms were unprepared. While the Khmer Empire survived, Pagan was ultimately destroyed, and Dai Viet was partially integrated into the Yuan Dynasty. Kublai Khan also sent Junk Ships to Taiwan, the Philippines, but most notably Java, the center of the Majapahit Empire which also resisted the Mongol Forces. During this time in the late 13th and early 14th century, as the Khmer and Pagan influenced waned along the Straight of Malacca, the Kingdom of Singapura arose as an important trading hub between India, China, and Majapahit.

Japan was no exception to the Khan's desires. In the late 1250s, the Khans sent envoys to Japan, demanding the 'King of Japan' bow to the Khan due to a mandate from Heaven. Japan ignored Mongolia. As a result, Mongolia invaded, first landing as Tsushima and then landing on Kyushu in southern Japan. Within a day though, their fleet of Junks was largely destroyed by a storm, and the soldiers that landed were outnumbered and outclassed by the Samurai force on Kyushu. Not to be outdone, Kublai Khan invaded again a few years later, ending much the same way on Kyushu. Despite the Japanese victories, it depleted the Emperor's reserves, and despite minor wars raging between Daimyos, it came to a head in 1333 with a brief revolt, ending the Kamakura period.

So if Ubisoft wants to make a game and just keep adding onto it and adding more and more areas like an MMO or live service game, the Mongolian Empire has that in spades and all in the same 50 year period. While Ubisoft could try to make it coherent, based on Wrath of the Druids and Valhalla just trying to "feel" like the Viking fantasy, it'd be easy to find a way to fit the "Mongolian" fantasy or hopefully "Mongolian Assassin" fantasy into a bunch of different regions and areas. And just for fun, here are a bunch of rough ideas of what different DLC could be. What other ideas do you have?

Rough Borders for a main game + DLC

    1. Base Game - Eastern China and Mongolia. Include major cities like Shagdu, Dadu, and Wuchang

    Is Arno a Royalist? (Unity)

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 07:27 PM PDT

I'm playing Unity through for the first time (it's the only one I've never finished) and I'm confused by the plot. Is Arno supposed to be a royalist? Various NPC refer to him as such in combat situations, Mirabeau is a monarchist, and Arno has an aristocratic back story. While the Assassins might not support the fact free chaos that the French Revolution devolved into, I doubt that they would be in favor of monarchy either. Especially the kind of absolute monarchy France had in 1791.

Why was Arno allowes back into the Brotherhood?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 10:18 PM PDT

At a certain point in Unity Arno is thrown out of the Brotherhood and with nothing to do with himself he just sits in Versailles and drinks. Then he kills La Touche and is just allowed back into the Brotherhood? But why? He's just done the same thing that got him expelled which is killing a target without talking to the council first. Did I miss something or is it just never explained. (I've played the game and read the novel btw)

    Is Mario Auditore a Sage?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 09:20 PM PDT

I don't know why I've just made this realization, but I have. Mario and the Sage's share a lot of similarities. Not just the eyes (which you could just blame on the scar), but the facial hair and just the way that they look. This doesn't really matter but it's interesting to me. Thoughts?

I went back and played Unity again and ya know… Bellec wasn’t entirely wrong

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 09:06 AM PDT

The assassins have ups and downs and grow weaker as they let their guard down, something we see the creed doing in Unity. Sure it was Elise but any situation like that could turn sour. His motive was right but the way he wanted to go about it was too extreme for it to come to fruition. I honestly struggled having to kill him because of his character, but that's just the plot and what I have to do.

Just completed Assassins Creed Origins - Amazing game!

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 11:00 PM PDT

I've been doing a play-through of all the AC games starting with 1 and I finally made my way to Origins about a month ago. Today I completed the game with all the DLC and I put about 90 hours total. This game was a total blast! Definitely a candidate for my top 3 AC games out of the entire series. I'm a bit saddened now that AC is over, but I am a bit relived to have finished the game. I typically get burnt-out about 75% of the way through AC games, but Origins really kept my interest the entire way through.

I am planning on taking a short break and play another game, and then start AC Odyssey once I get the itch. I'm thinking of starting the Witcher 3, Fenyx Rising or Far Cry Primal. I really don't know lol. I have too many games in my steam library to pick right now and the steam summer sale isn't helping!

If anyone reading this is new to the AC series, AC Origins is definitely one I'd recommend to new players if you don't want to start from the beginning. You don't really need to know any previous back-story to enjoy this game. It really feels like a re-boot of the entire AC series. I still can't decide on if I want to put this as number 1 or 2. Black Flag is in my number 1 spot right now but that may change once I ponder more.

What do you all recommend I start next?

Black Flag Gold Edition is FINALLY available in Europe

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 01:41 PM PDT

I think the Zealots were easily the best fights in Valhalla and we should get some content that lets us fight them again. Maybe a boss rush mode, or an arena mode, even them being added to river raids would be amazing.

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 11:18 AM PDT

Just picture it the zealots become the bosses of all the major military installations in the rivers. Once you loot the installation you have the choice to escape with your supplies or fight them and risk it all for more supplies. Obviously they need to make the supplies more useful to make it worth it but honestly if they were added I would do river raids just to fight them.

[Spoilers] The ending of Assassin's Creed 2 doesn't make much sense to me

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 10:23 PM PDT

I'll start by saying, I like Assassin's Creed 2. I do think it's one of the weaker games in the series but not bad at all. Hot take yeah I know. Now the problem I have with the ending is that Ezio doesn't kill Rodrigo Borgia. It makes no sense why Ezio doesn't kill Rodrigo Borgia. Ezio is pretty much like "I'm above wanting revenge and I'm a better person now" It's the old cliche we've seen a thousand times but it doesn't make sense for it to happen in this situation. I think cliches can be fine if done well but I don't think is done well at all. The main reason this doesn't make sense to me because Ezio is an assassin and assassins always have to kill people so others can live. Take revenge out of the equation, Ezio still should have killed him there since he's the leader of the templars at the time. Also Ezio growing as a person throughout the game would be fine, only if Ezio spares more people after this point to be more consistent with his character but he never spares anyone like Rodrigo Borgia again. Cesare Borgia in brotherhood kills Mario so brotherhood's story has a little bit of revenge in it and Ezio doesn't even think twice and drops off to his death. Now this isn't my only problem with this game but it's my biggest problem with the game. Again I like this game, it's just my opinion

Allow us to skip cutscenes in Mastery Challenges

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 10:19 AM PDT

It takes 12 seconds for the white screen to fade back to the restart screen and then another 30 seconds to slowly go through the opening graphic again. This is nearly an entire minute just to reload the exact same tiny area that was already loaded.

Fuck off. When I die, allow me to skip to where I can restart IMMEDIATELY. Then allow me to skip the intro and begin playing IMMEDIATELY. It's pointless and fucking stupid.

Help with controls on AC Syndicate

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 01:43 PM PDT

I can buy the game now since its on promo and i looked to controls settings on official site it says i can change the buttons anytime. My PS4 controller has issues on R2 button, i got another with all buttons working but analogic there work really bad so its "unplayable" for me, i finished Origins using it and my characters walked bad the entire game!

I would like to know if on Syndicate i can finish game without issues not using light attack or L1? Is it possible and doable? I would change my buttons because the R2 also drop body and object so i would put this on my L1 button and light attack on R2 and wouldnt use light attack.

Listen to all of Washington’s Conversations

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 06:29 PM PDT

So I'm Playing AC3R for the first time, and I've come to the frontier challenges set that says to listen to all of Washington's conversations. I have completed Sequence 10 and have yet to start Sequence 11, and I know that two of the conversations are found in Sequence 9, Memory 1, and the other one can be done in New York post-game. I'm one of those players that likes to get as many side activities done before finishing the game as I can, and with the handful of glitches and bugs I've encountered and/or heard of, I want to know: could I jump into S9-M1 and get the two there first, then finish up with the one in New York post-game, or do I have to finish the game and do the New York one first, then get the two from S9-M1? I realize this question might sound insignificant, but I have heard about one player that was stuck at 99% because he initiated one of the conversation before he was given the task, and as such, it didn't count, so I just want to make sure.

Can you replay missions after the game is complete?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 08:24 AM PDT

I'm talking about AC3. I tried to get full synchronization the first few missions, but it became jarring to the immersion and I didn't like it. So I'm wondering if, after the game is complete (as in we enter the open world after the last mission which I'm assuming there is), can we go back to try and full synch the earlier missions, or do I have to replay the whole game again?
