I spent 5 hours completing all River Raids....the rewards suck and so does the Jomsviking system

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 05:50 PM PST

The main reward (Saint George's Armor) is just a lazy repaint of the Thegn Armor. At least the colors are nice (red with a white cape) but it is ridiculous that Ubisoft is doing these 20 USD armor sets while giving us lazy repaints.

The cosmetic rewards are basically 1 boring ship skin and 1 set of boring tattoos. That's it. The only other use of the foreign supplies is to upgrade your ship...so it can carry more foreign supplies and to upgrade your Jomsviking hut (which is useless but more on that later). What a joke.

The river raids get extremely boring and repetitive after only a few minutes. Think of Nioh's The Abyss or Shadow of War's fortress invasions only that remove all randomness and fun.

You'll be spending more time sailing than actually killing the extremely weak enemies (even in Drenger) that pose no challenge whatsoever.

The only different raid is the one at the final castle where you battle a miniboss to get Saint George's Longsword. Other than that, they're all the same town, barrack, and monastery from the base game. 0 creativity, 0 challenge.

The risk/reward element of losing all loot if you die is stupid since it's IMPOSSIBLE to die. There are rations everywhere and the enemies will never surround you since you have a crew of 8 to bully them.

The increase in the reinforcement level is barely noticeable so that's another irrelevant gameplay element to consider. They should have at least send mercenaries or mini-bosses after you at least.

Finally, the new Jomsviking system...oh boy, where do I start.

Only your Jomsviking can rank up (you rank up after completing all raids in 1 map, mine is currently rank 3) and you cannot create more, you can only recruit Jomsviking created by other players. Ranks are, however, irrelevant since the Jomsvikings themselves are irrelevant. They truly are.

You can literally skip the Jomsviking system and just go raiding with a rental crew. That's how irrelevant the Jomsviking system is. They're only good for opening doors and chests since Eivor is so OP that he can kill all enemies w/o help.

Ever since Odyssey's Mercenaries, Ubisoft has tried to copy Shadow of War's Nemesis system but they simply don't understand what made the Nemesis system great in the first place.

TLDR; skip this sh** mode. If you only want the Saint George's armor, wait for a Youtuber to upload a video telling you where the clues and armor pieces are so you can skip 4 hours of senseless grind. With a guide I'm sure you can get all of the gear in under 60 mins or so.

And yes, I'm aware it's free. I'm also aware that it is a lazy and trash mode.

I drew Petra (AC: Valhalla) in Children's book style!

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 05:42 AM PST

Exactly as I expected. River Raids is more for Ubisoft than the players.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 04:18 PM PST

In what seems like a celebration of Norse culture touting "Yule Season", Ubisoft designed a gameplay model that benefits them while giving players watered down ideas.

River Raids explores more of the same land and makes the player grind the same tasks in order to receive awards. This looks like a console roguelike feature in the form of a free update, but it's more akin to a mobile free-to-play idea. After their recent financial reports, it's very clear to me that this update is to test its userbase for the near future.

Ubisoft plans to lean into MTX and F2P games with premium features. After Assassin's Creed Valhalla being the fastest selling launch game in the series and the best selling game in the series, Ubisoft has that entire player base to be guineas. There's no doubt they are collecting every data they need from us to see how long players will grind for basic items, their play style, etc.

It's a free update with free content and gear. There should be no complaints right? To me raiding is one of the most tedious and boring aspects of Valhalla (since I stealth raids until I need to open chests anyway), and the idea of raiding back-to-back for items you are only chanced to get with no guarantees, is very much a freemium experience waiting to happen in the future. And if it only happens on mobile then who cares, go make that money. But it's been worse in the main big releases the past few years and Valhalla's no exception.

This update is fine. It's free and I will play it some more. It makes sense in the world of vikings and its player to go on raids. I get it. It's a welcomed addition. It's just very easy to see through what it truly is. Ireland and Paris better deliver.

Valhalla inventories badly need renovation and sorting options

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 02:41 PM PST

    As per title.

I've got a bunch of weapons all in one inventory, no way to sort them by upgrade level, damage, alphabetical.

Same for armours, same for goods, same for runes!

Having the trade menu confined to a thin scrolling window doesn't help at all. It's infuriating to use with mouse + kb.

They give us cool looking white colour armour and then turn it into freakin' gold colour on Mythical level, Sigh

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 11:45 PM PST

Yeah I am talking about St. George Set from the river raid expansion. Man it was looking so good and then when I saw on YT that it becomes gold on upgrading I have decided I will not upgrade it.

    ACSisterhood's Logo Design Process

    ACSisterhood's Logo Design Process

I don't think I have ever posted on here, so I'm making my first AC Reddit contribution a meaningful one!
This is a gif showing the progress made during the design of the Assassin's Creed Sisterhood logo.

The idea came from a very inspired brainstorming session in the Mentors Guild group, and it was proposed by Mentor Kulpreet, original founder of the movement, who didn't really have any doubt about what she wanted: a tribute to Amunet. I started from the original Assassin insignia (as you can see from the initial lineart), some references from AC2, Origins, and I took it from there. The logo is a combination of the snake in Amunet's original concept art/statue in Auditore's vault, in Monteriggioni, and a revisited, more minimalistic version of the logo featured on her belt.
It all came to be pretty naturally, except, maybe, the coloring part. The most complicated moment was in fact picking the right colors and materials. At first I wanted to make a flat design, like a modern, corporate brand, but as I started painting I had flashbacks of AC Origins: I remember picturing the bright, shiny gold of the top of the pyramids, of the game's logo itself, and at that point I knew it had to be gold.
I wanted the background to have a meaning, so I decided to pick my mother's favorite color which also happens to be just the perfect choice to represent gender equality.

I won't lie, I'm here because I have seen some very preoccupying claims that I stole the logo from a tumblr artist and other defamatory accusations about the people leading this movement. Don't let anyone fool you.

There's a reason for everything, we're not just angry people screaming "female protagonists at all costs". There's awful things that have happened and people who were hurt, it's not just about women on screen but also about women behind them, both in the community and in the industry.
Having concerns is natural. Ask, discuss with us, look things up. Is there something that doesn't quite convince you? Shoot your questions, give us the chance to explain.
But keep hostility out of the door.

    Sebastian

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: River Raids Free Update

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 09:02 AM PST

Credits go out to "The brother's code" at Youtube

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 07:54 AM PST

What do y’all think of the new update as a whole?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 03:23 PM PST

For me, it's disappointment, Ubisoft has their priorities.

Don't get me wrong, I love this update, River Raids is a fun game mode. The rewards, however, not so much. The set is just a reskin of the Theign armor or whatever it's called. It was the same case for the Yuletide set as well, both reskins. I find it really sad how Ubisoft can seem to make new armor sets to sell, but can't make any new ones for the base game. A little bit goes along way. Now I don't expect them to change it, (although I would personally enjoy it if they changed), but if Ubisoft could stop doing this in the future, that would be nice.

Origins’ relatively short length gives it incredible replayability — something that’s missing from Odyssey and Valhalla.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 07:51 AM PST

I love the new ACs, but I think we can all agree that they're very big. I've put over 500 hours into Odyssey (across a few saves) and still haven't completed NG+ because I keep getting burned out. I've put down Valhalla for now after 170 hours because I want to avoid that same issue.

Origins, on the other hand, is much more accessible in terms of completing a playthrough in a reasonable amount of time. I've completed the story three times since I got it in Sept. 2018, most recently in October 2020, and I've been hankering for another attempt. Why? Because with a full work week, I know I can come home and get something done. I can start a new game and make it to Alexandria in only a couple of hours, a stark contrast to my six-hour introduction to Valhalla.

In Odyssey, it's hard to prioritize story missions because there's always some time-consuming activity that needs to be done — assassinating Cultists, the lengthy traversal to get to a viewpoint to unlock fast travel points, sailing and invariably battling pirates. I love the game, but I just don't have the time to do everything that's necessary to progress efficiently.

Of course, I haven't even attempted to replay Valhalla because it's pointless without NG+. Even when it does come out, I know I'll still have to wait a while to able to enjoy it without getting burned out, if my first 150-hour playthrough and experience with Odyssey is anything to go by.

In conclusion, Origins' length is ideal and something I wish the devs would've taken notes on for the newer titles. The new ACs have great stories, but I think Origins tells its the best because it's easier to complete in a reasonable amount of time.

(Spoilers) River Raids Map and what could be done with it.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 11:17 AM PST

So, I was playing the whole evening AC Valhalla new River Raids, which adds 2 new buildings and at least 3 new "mini-maps" to the game.

I got surprised when after talking to the new settler, Vagn I think the name is, and selected a river raid for the second time, a small map with The British Isles, the coasts of Norway, Frankia and possibly Magna Frisia.

There's right now only 3 settlements, but given the size of the Raids Map, It would be stupid not to use it, maybe adding every month a couple raid locations with new gear and opportunities, they could introduce new resources for new things, maybe have the new places full of metals you use for upgrading weapons and armors, who knows.

The best way of implementing this maybe would be with Irish River Raids to get a taste of Ireland before Wrath of the Druids comes out, and the same with the Siege of Paris and Frankish/Frisian River Raids. This locations not only would be interesting to explore by themselves, but also to convince people to buy the season pass or the dlcs.

All in all I see River Raids full of potential for implementation of new places, weapons and opportunities. What do you people think?

Does anybody know how to do this spin move onto a pole in AC Revelations?

For a deus vult experience, leave St George at default, upgrade the shield to mythical.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 11:48 PM PST

For a deus vult experience, leave St George at default, upgrade the shield to mythical.

St George default model and skin is reminiscent of a great helm (sort of) and a templar tunic. More you upgrade the gear, more it aesthetically sucks.

Leavi it as it is, take only the shield to mythical. And DEUS VULT people.

About the River Raids reward... (spoilers)

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 04:12 PM PST

Note: This is just complaining about style. The Saint George's set slaps in terms of style. But this is just a rant about the mythical cape.

The Saint George's armor is really good imo. Especially the cape. The superior/red and flawless/blue are what I'd recommend if you're like me and don't care about stats. The mythical stuff also doesn't look to bad except for the cape. I would not recommend upgrading it to mythical. Doing so will make you lose the white/red look of the previous levels, and replace it with red/gold. So unless you want your cape to look like the colors of Gryffindor, I'd recommend just leaving it at either flawless or superior.

However, if you'd like to see for yourself, here's a tactic to get back to what you were at before. Quick save before upgrading, then after looking, if you'd like to go back. Load up your quick save from before you upgraded. That's what I did. So now I'm back at superior/red.

That's my rant. Again, if you're a style over stats player like me, then I wouldn't recommend the mythical cape. But if you're about stats over style, then I'm not sure this will be of much use to you.

We need to highlight the broken detection rate in this game.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 09:09 AM PST

Doing stealth in this game is sometimes so disappointing. You get detected so fast that it feels like doesn't lets you want to do stealth. But that definitely is not the case all camps and forts have good level design. Enemies are placed like if you use the rights abilities and skills you will be able to take them out stealthily.

The problem is speed of detection bar going to red too soon from yellow.

In distrust zones, the meter going from white to yellow speed is decent but the speed of yellow to red is too fast and wrong.

In restricted zones, the meter going from white to yellow is too soon and it doesn't even gives you time to hide. I get it when the detection meter goes from yellow to red almost instantly in a restricted zone though.

They sometimes even detect you wrongly while you are in the bush(though I do think when this happened it was little of my mistake too) or through walls(happened with me twice only).

At least they don't know your location and don't follow you to your hiding places.

Appreciation post: Thank you, Ubisoft, for not penalizing respeccing characters!

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 09:23 AM PST

I am just dipping my toe into the waters of AC Odyssey (level 17, just got to Athens), and the ability to respec my loadout and skills, for free, and even mid-fight is a truly incredible, but simple, game-changer. It makes the game so replayable and flexible.

I just looked it up and it appears AC Valhalla (which I am so psyched about playing as soon as I get my gaming TV set up) also has the same system, allowing for a single point respec or a full respec, at any time, for free. Every game with a skill tree ought to adopt this method. It only makes games better and more fun.

Why is Unity so anti-French Revolution?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 07:36 AM PST

In AC3, you just played through the American Revolution. The revolutionaries were good and the British were bad. But in Unity, it's basically the opposite.

The marketing made it seem like you would be on the side of the revolution, but you spend most of the game killing "extremists". One of the assassination targets psychologically tortures some general while singing a revolutionary song, Clockwork Orange style. The database entries mostly paint the revolution in a bad light. One especially ridiculous one mentions how the Sans Culottes put the mayor in a ditch, tortured him for 2 hours, and executed him, and it says they did it symbolically. It doesn't mention how that mayor actually ordered soldiers to shoot at unarmed protesters beforehand.

    It's just so weird.

AC unity would’ve done much better if the assassins were the ones who wanted a violent revolution

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 01:37 PM PST

There are many things they could've done if they simply made it so that the assassins wanted violence. They could've pointed out the hypocrisy of the creed, opened up new gameplay opportunities, and told a much better story. Now killing some guards and generating 50 peasants to storm a castle is a good way to turn last gen consoles into airplanes.

Which is why I'm making this post now when next gen consoles are already out and games can start increasing their potential. It is time to give assassins creed unity a complete and utter remake. If AC unity gets a remake giving it an actual revolution, more of the parkour elements we miss, and a good story I believe that it will become the best AC game to this day.

Why do enemies instantly detect the player in the river raids?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 01:08 PM PST

Even on Apprentice (easy) difficulty, enemies detect you instantly in the river raid maps. Like, I know this isn't a stealth game like Hitman or Assassin's Creed, but we should definitely take a look at some mechanics from those franchises, specially the latter, which has a similar "going to the past" theme. Look at their latest game (I think it was Assassin's Creed Unity or Syndicate, I can't remember, it's been a while) and look how well done their stealth is. Why can't we have that?
