Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a must play for old fans of the series

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 10:53 AM PST

I know that some people didn't like origins and especially odyssey, but Valhalla is different.

I know on the surface it seems the same rpg stuff, but hear me out.

Not to spoil anything, but I've been smiling non stop at the many references and hidden ones moments in the game.

It feels very familiar, and it gives me that Ac2 vibes.

So if you are not decided yet, do yourself a favor and get this game

I've got my cosplay ready for launch day. See you in Valhalla!

Through all the beta testing Valhalla went through before release, has nobody mentioned how bad the hit box is when hitting boxes and obsidian stones?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 02:38 PM PST

It's really bad. I'm standing directly in front of a stone or crate and it just won't register a hit until I keep move moving around enough to get a lucky angle to finally hit it.

Camera too zoomed out during fight

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 06:37 AM PST

I only have one complaint so far and it is that the camera is too zoomed out in combat you cant really see whats going on its not that big of a problem just trying to see if anyone else agrees?

Really looking forward to Valhalla. Here’s an Eivor illustrated by me.

So happy the world actually FEELS large!

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 12:58 PM PST

Just climbed my first mountain to get to an observation point and from the ground it looked daunting as hell. I figured it would be just like Odyssey where the distant mountains and stuff LOOK huge but as you approach them and start climbing it's almost like the sense of scale decreased. Well, I'm happy to say that isn't the case with Valhalla. It took me a solid 10 mins to climb and I kept looking down in amazement at just how massive and high it felt. Gave me Breath of the Wild feelings. Fucking bravo devs and God bless each and every one of you.

[Spoilers Valhalla] Eivor is super likeable and the side quests are genuinely fun because of it

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 04:50 PM PST

Still hopping around Norway but two of the sidequests have really stood out to me so far.

The old guy that wants you to throw all his shit off a cliff so that it goes with him to the afterlife, then proceeds to jump off of said cliff

The couple in town that want you to burn their house down while they fuck.

Both times Eivor is just like, aight, cool. I really dig it.

    Tired of looking for caves

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 04:35 PM PST

Just a headache rant. There's way too many loot chests underground with 0 sense of how to reach them using Odin's sight/ Raven. Great they're 60m below me and not a cave in sight.

this is just sad. we have gotten to a point where you can't have a character with traits.

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 07:32 PM PST

There are way too many Wealth items underground, we are not given enough information on HOW to get underground too often

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 03:55 PM PST

Stairs aren't always visible on the map, through the crow. I've found myself wandering around a town/chapel for faaar too long just looking for a way to get underground.

    Really frustrating.

In case you didn't remember from Origins, this works in Valhalla

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 12:57 PM PST

Fire arrows are available all the time. Just drop your torch on the ground, prepare to fire an arrow, and then aim it into the fire. You can also ignite your arrows by shooting them through fire, like the standing torches, wall sconces, or hanging fires. If you're really quick, you can throw a torch up into an encampment, and then shoot an arrow through it before it hits the ground to ignite it. Perfect for blowing up those oil jars and setting the place ablaze in a hurry when you can't throw the torch far enough.

You can also use your torch to burn down those wicker-type fences surrounding camps. You can throw it at them, or it can be as easy as walking along the fence with the torch up against it.

    Have fun!

The voice actor in Skyrim is in this game

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 05:23 AM PST

Im in the opening sequence and one of the Viking guys I overheard talking, it took me a minute to figure out where I recognized the voice from. It's the same guy who voices the town guards in Skyrim

Pretty cool hearing his voice again it's making me feel nostalgic

FYI -The game gets SIGNIFICANTLY better after the prologue. Don't be put off by it.

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 09:49 PM PST

The prologue is not AC at all. Teleports you around the map in between quests. No stealth. Honestly I was worried.

Don't be put off by that though. Once the game opens up it's a significantly different experience and much better for it.

Haven’t played AC in over a decade, been watching Valhalla clips and I think it’s finally time. Anyway, here’s an amateur drawing I did back in high school when the series was a bit different

A few Orlog (Dice Game) beginner tips [NO SPOILERS]

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 02:34 PM PST

At first, when it was revealed in trailers, I was like "meh I'll probably do it just once" but when I finally got to play it I was instantly hooked. Sure, it isn't Gwent or that addictive FF8 card game but Orlog sure is a very interesting strategy game.

On a first impression, you might think that rolling 6 attack squares is more than enough to win all matches but that's very far from the strategy behind Orlog.

The core strategy is to use your God's favor to completely wreck your opponent; direct "battle" is good but your aim is to roll for the "dotted line" pieces to gain God's favors as well as the hand roll that steals favors from your opponent.

At the start of the game you only have Thor (direct damage at the end of the turn) but then you gain new Gods as you defeat more players, each with their own priority (some are before resolution, others after, some during, etc...) and effect (healing, deleting shields, etc...). You can equip up to 3 different God's favors per match.

My foolproof strategy is the following:

Round 1: roll for dotted lines squares no matter the symbol. Only confirm those with dotted lines and re-roll the rest.

Round 2: do the same and depending on how many God's favor totems you got, activate Thor's tier 2 or 3 ability.

IMPORTANT: if your opponent has any hand squares, do the math in your head before you commit to a God's favor; if the opponent steals favor totems from you, your Tier 3 or Tier 2 special won't downgrade to the previous one, it just won't activate at all.

Round 3: play defensively with the aim of protecting yourself from damage (helmet and shield squares) as well as gaining God's favor. If you have less than 4 health totems, use Freya's God favor (you can win it by playing against the first Orlog dude in Norway) to heal yourself. If not, save it for round 4.

Round 4: Go all out with max attack and finish with Thor's tier 2 or tier 3 God favor.

I have yet to lose a single match using this strategy.

Valhalla’s combat seems to be clunkier than Odyssey’s

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 01:37 PM PST

I feel so slow in this game. Even when I use the two light axes, theres a .8 second delay from when you press the button and Eivor actually attacks. Its like he revs up his light attacks with every swing. What the hell lol. Idk, this is coming from someone whose main weapon was the dagger in Odyssey, but I feel like even the swords in odyssey swung with more speed.

Aside from that, this new stamina thing I'm not liking. A game thats huge on war, raiding and vikings and my guy gets winded after a few swings.

    These are my initial thoughts

This game gets so much right (ACV)

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 03:04 PM PST

    • much less bs to collect

    • The stuff you do collect and the missions you get are pretty good. I love the short blue activities. They are pretty funny and require a bit of thinking. Compared to Odyssey which had a billion quests that were all "go here and kill X" this is way better.

    • Upgrading gear feels pretty fair. In Odyssey it costed a fortune to upgrade all your gear and being even a few levels behind would be a pain. This game is much more fair. Go do a raid and you can come back with enough stuff to upgrade a good bit of gear. Remember to get the small chests too! They actually contain a ton of stuff even compared to the big ones.

    • Being an assassin is so much better! We have one hit kills again! Sneaking around is really fun too. I wanted to get to a chest inside a house without alerting the guards in there, so I set the roof on fire and they actually ran out! I love when the game rewards you for thinking a bit and getting creative.

    • Game world is much more manageable. It doesn't feel too large and its easy to traverse since the terrain is pretty even.

    • I like the story. With fewer characters and a much more one track storyline its a lot easier to understand everything.

Audio is terrible in AC valhalla

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 01:47 PM PST

The whole game sounds "crunchy" and muffled. When people are speaking the main character sounds really loud and harsh while the other characters sound really far away even when they are right next to each other. Is there any fix.

Gold Edition is a terrible deal.

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 08:30 PM PST

I was torn on ordering the standard or Gold Steelbook edition of Valhalla and ended up going for the standard after I did the math.

Typically when games do "deluxe" or "gold" or whatever editions that include the season pass, they usually save the customer $10 or so dollars or include a bit more - but not Valhalla.

When you do the math, the game is $59.99 and the season pass is $39.99 and when bought separately equal to $99.98. Whereas the Gold edition is $99.99?? It's actually "cheaper" to purchase the content separately... One cent more sure but still, no savings on investing in the game and its post launch content?

Then you've got the Gold Steelbook at $109.99, an extra $10 for just the Steelbook, when in most cases steelbooks come free as preorder or store bonuses... not to mention the "Ultimate" edition at a ridiculous $119.99... seriously almost $150 for a game and digital content, not even anything physical aside from the Steelbook.

    That is just exploitative. Honestly.

Surely I'll get downvoted to hell and told to buy what I want and not complain even thought I'm enjoying the game and have nothing bad to say about the game itself; but seriously, the fact that gamers are actually paying these ridiculous prices for subpar editions of games is enabling ravenous companies like Ubisoft to overprice and price gouge the hell out of these "exclusive" editions because they know they can.

The combat feels incredibly clunky in Valhalla

    Posted: 10 Nov 2020 10:50 AM PST

I've had a bit of a hiatus from AC - the last one I actually played (and liked - sue me) was Unity.

Was the combat in Origins and Odyssey as bad as it is in Valhalla? It looks cool but it is so incredibly clunky - it feels like it's not even finished, there are bugs and strange behavior all over the place. Just wondering if I should have expected this.
