Are people really upset by de-sync penalty for killing civilians?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 09:23 PM PDT

I've seen a few videos mocking this fact on YouTube and a good number of comments also seemingly very upset by the fact that killing civvies will result in a de-sync. I mean, this is an Assassin's Creed game so it's been in every game since the beginning and I understand Odyssey was the exception but they had a genuinely acceptable reason for that, but even without it it's hardly a deal breaker imo.

The arguments I see for it being in the game is that it's vikings and they're barbarians so why can't they kill regular Englishmen. But I don't think Ubisoft is going in that direction for a very good reason. First of all the Hidden Ones have already been formed so the tenants would have already been made to not kill innocents, but I think Ubisoft is creating a narrative where the vikings aren't the brutish, bloodthirsty seafarers that we know them as today, but rather refugees fighting for a home.

I am a big fan of Isu/Pieces of Eden lore so here is my analysis/recap. of Odyssey/Atlantis lore [Various Spoilers]

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:35 PM PDT

Warning : Long post ahead! Also, if there are Odyssey haters who just want to bash and be disrespectful please go away I'm looking for a constructive discussion. By haters, I do not mean simply disliking Odyssey, I mean disrespecting others and pushing their own opinions/preferences as facts.

The Isu lore is something that I usually feel not too many people are into. I have played all main AC games since the very first one came out and honestly, nothing in the series fascinates me more than the First civilization. Yet, I always thought they were not explored and expanded meaningfully enough. After AC2 and the glyphs, I thought they would and the glyphs hinted that many myths and legends were Isu-based. We got a few stuff until AC3 but after that, the Isu plot kinda died with pointless build up of Juno and sages (screw the people who choosed to finish this plot in a freakin' comic!!!).

With Origins, I expected so much Isu stuff with the Egyptian setting but nope, only some cryptic messages with little purpose, at least for now. The mythology was handled with a drug dream and Curse of the Pharaoh turned into a simple « Apple did it » with no real lore.

Darby even revealed that Origins could have had more Isu lore with Juno being linked to Osiris, Sekhmet, etc (12 at total) and that the writters were quite excited about it: https://twitter.com/DarbyMcDevitt/status/1318678030169100290

I was so disappointed, but then came Odyssey, it realized my dream of wielding a piece of Eden from start to finish, a dream that I had since we could use the apple at the start of Brotherhood. It was such a refreshing turn for combat that it became my favorite combat in the series! It also added so much Isu lore, I was thrilled! The bashing of Odyssey thought, makes me scared that the Isu lore might be put on the backseat again in Valhalla, but I have hope after seeing Excalibur in the deep dive trailer, and Darby's interview where he says that the Order of the ancients has this name because its members worship the Isu.

I've seen people say that Atlantis/Odyssey's Isu lore is « bad »… But I honestly find the lore pretty amazing, here is an recap./analysis of what we got overall :

    1. We got new pieces of Eden with various abilities :

-First the staff of Hermes which might me the most powerful POE we've ever seen. Some say it's OP but that's the point, it would not be so important to the story otherwise.

-Deimos sword of Damocles which acts as his piece of Eden, just like Kassandra has her spear.

-And I actually liked the Spear of Leonidas which was a good replacement for the Secret/Hidden blade to me in this period when only Darius should have one. It enhances its user's strenght, speed and reflexes, give temporary invisibility and revitalize the body with a few extras (powering arrows, shockwave). Some say it's OP and has too many abilities except Kassandra is a hybrid (30-50% DNA I guess?) which makes her more potent with a POE, even sages only have 5-6%. Also, I don't get why some say that since we have not seen such abilites before then it's lore breaking… the Apple always had more than one abilitie (brainwashing, illusions, super speed, invisibility,…) and seeing other POE having many powers now and not before doesn't mean they did not exist before. If you use that « logic » then next time a scientist find a new function to a known protein for example, tell them their discovery is impossible because they should have had learned about it before… same flawed of logic.

-Also some say the apples don't transform humans into monsters, first, see my former paragraph plus, they were relics of Eden, shaped like apples maybe but it's obviously not apples, they are devices made to react to human DNA and trigger a programmed mutation.

    2. New Isu realms/architecture and members :

-So we learn that 3 Isu territories called the Sister Realms existed, ruled my Hades, Persephone and Poseidon. Some say that Odyssey's Isu Architecture doesn't make sense with the previous ones in other games, except all isu sites have been pretty different from one another and it makes no sense to expect every Isu cities to have the same type of architecture, they ain't some extreme hardcore communists. The underworld and Elysium were twisted into greek mythology to help Kassandra's acclimatation to the staff, they did not actually look like that. Atlantis was mostly accurate building wise but still was twisted in some places like the boats. Also, it is hinted in the codex that the sister realms are at odds with the Isu authority in Eden which may add to the why the architecture is special : they want to show their difference.

-Now, some say the Isu are not like the previous ones, once again Persephone, Hekates and Hades are twisted into greek myths for Kassandra's sake, but their core personnalities have been preserved : Hekates was deceitful, Persophone obsessed with control and Hades was kinda anarchic to the point he was almost happy to learn their civilization was close to destruction. It's also nonsensical to expect all Isu to be the same, humans are all different people with different personalities, same for the Isu. It's foolish to base our knowledge on Minerva who is based on the goddess of Wisdom which fits her more mysterious cryptic vibe. She was special among the Isu.

We also have Aletheia, some say she gives too much info and all that for an Isu but she is precisely said to be a special case and she is based on the goddess of truth (Veritas in roman), it thus seems fitting that she gives so much info and exposition while also acknowledging the mistakes of her kind. Poseidon was a surprise to me because he was a lot nicer than I expected, maybe due to Aletheia's influence.

-I also don't get why some people are shocked to learn Aita and Hades are different Isu, thinking that ALL of them were the same « god » among at least 3 pantheons was nothing but assumption. It's the case for Minerva and Juno, maybe Jupiter but we can't be sure Jupiter and Zeus are the same since Jupiter seemed like a chill old man while Zeus is described as the worst piece of tr*sh and is hated by Poseidon to the point he might have destroyed Atlantis once to erase all traces of his last visit in the City. Then again, Juno did not look that bad at first, so who knows. In the end, it's just that some Isu are common to at least 2 pantheons and some aren't, simple as that. Finding your hypothesis to be inaccurate or wrong is common in scientific research, nothing weird to see it in fiction.

I'd say, I honestly find the newly introduced Isu very interesting and quite like I imagined : flawed just like their creations, humans. Which is one of the thing Aletheia wanted to show Kassandra and Layla.

    3. Project Olympos : Now, the dreaded « mythological monsters », touchy subject it seems. I actually liked them, I liked how they explainded the « survival » of Medusa, the sphinx and the Minotaur from their myths by the fact that other humans got transformed by touching the artefact. I found that creating abhorrent creatures and thus, showing no respect for life was very Isu. We know after all they created humans from primates just for them to be their slaves. Now about the debate of the why, the idea is that Juno wanted a project that would scare humans enough. Why scare humans when they could be controlled by the POE? Well, it is likely that Juno might have feared the rise of an hybrid, that, combined with the fact Poseidon and Aletheia had more respect for humans, this might have triggered Juno to creating a new plan based on fear in case the apples would not be enough. After all, enough human rebels could be very dangerous despite the POE as shown later by the Human-Isu war. Also, let's not forget Aita who's 100% a mad scientist and it's thus, not exclude that he might have wanted that project also for « science ». It was ironic, and maybe purposely symbolic, for them to abduct humans from a city that tried to give humans more rights. Now some can say, it was just to have mythology, well… that is not necessarly a bad thing because liking this or not is subjective so it's fine if it fits wih the isu lore. But why is it made to look like myth in the lore? The thing is that the myth in-universe would be based on them not the reverse so that question is invalid, and even so, what if Juno based them on creatures she knew humans were scared of? Maybe they had stories about them already in this case. But if they are weapons, why would the sphinx ask riddles? Actually, there are many possibilities : madness from Aita, purpuseful for Juno if based on human stories… or unwanted secundary effect, nothing says the creatures aren't just failures. The project has been stopped by Poseidon and Aletheia in its course after all. Some would say that it was not a good move to make them close to the myth for the writters by making those creatures « real » but that is subjective, in my case it actually subverted my expectations to find illusions and instead tied in with my disgust towards the Isu for manipulating life without ethic.

    4. Project Anthropos and various Isu codex entries : https://assassinscreed.fandom.com/wiki/Isu_codex#2

-I found those entries really interesting, first, shoutout to « The failed experiment » which strikes me an easter egg to Plato's cave. Also, considering Plato spread the ideas about Atlantis existence and made the allegory of the cave… could he have been a Sage?

-I found the I.A.O.P to be nice to show that Isu were really blind to the danger of Solar instabilities. It then makes even more sense that they failed to do anything significant about it during the human-Isu war since they were still not caring much about it before.

-Personal logs : the most interesting part of this is that Poseidon cast wolfes out of the cities… I mentionned that Aita and Juno might have made Project Olympos creatures knowing what beast scared humans. There is no wolf among them, but could all the creatures be indeed based on human fears by design? Wait, I say no wolf, but a woman was turned into a wolf by Aita in Altantis simulation… seeing a pattern here...

-Poseidon logs : There is a mention of the wolf-like creature and more info on Aita mentionning he got banned from Atlantis due to his experiment.

-Various : A bunch of stuff, about Consus, about Poseidon exiling Juno et Aita for experimenting on humans in his city, and a weird note of Hades mentionning Cerberos death. Not sure this last one was supposed to make into the dlc because it's the only non-lore note since it mentions the keeper and thus follows the simulation story instead of actual Isu history.

-Phanes messages : The most interesting entries in my opinion. We have a name for Eve's father : Phanes. In Eden, he was the first Isu scientist to succesfully create a human but failed to make them obedient… until he managed to implant them with neural controls which seems to be the name Isu gave to the neurotransmitters of AC2 (glyphs). Now how can he implant a neurotransmitter in all humans? Genetic modifications maybe? Anyway, it allowed the POE to control their minds. But he fell in love with a female human and released her from the neurotransmitter (seems like Isu could remove neurotransmitters through surgery, that kind of technology would be crazy in real life) before escaping with her. Him and his lover, pregnant with Eve, found refuge in Atlantis. Could Juno and Aita have learned about Eve… and thus maybe the hybrid references in the simulation? In the simulation the hybrid is Kassandra, but maybe if Aita's hybrid experiments from the simulation had a real inpiration, it might be because of Eve. I theorized earlier that Juno could have been scared about humans rebelling despite the POE to control them because she learned about Eve existence and the danger that a hybrid could be.

    5. Story in summary : I find all that lore quite interesting, so the story overall is that Phanes created humans, engineered the neurotransmitters to control them, fell in love with one of his creation who was Eve's mother and they fled to Atlantis were they lived at least for a moment. In Atlantis, Poseidon and Aletheia as his Dikastes considered humans to be valuable, not just slaves and advocate for more rights for them. Poseidon exiled Juno and Aita because they obviously did not share his view, while also casting out everything that could scare them like wolves for example. Juno and Aita managed to sneak back into the city, helped by anti-human Isu from Atlantis. Juno may or may not have learned about Eve, at least she may have studied the potential of a hybrid and realized its danger. Aita and her abducted humans to experiment and started project Olympos to build both an army and a rebellion-deterrence force to overthrow Poseidon and destroy this « human have rights » mentality. Ultimately, Aletheia and Poseidon prevented it somehow (impossible to say if Aletheia actually dealt with the Hecatoncheires as Kassandra did in the simulation). Juno and Aita got captured but Poseidon refused to execute them. If he did then Desmond might still be alive… unless just activating the device killed him and not releasing Juno… not sure… But it would have saved us Juno's wasted plotline let's be real.

Juno and Aita got exiled again and probably fled to Saturn's arm. Juno still won though, since Atlantis, a city that were supposed to be an example of how to live with humans for Poseidon and Aletheia, got tainted by Project Olympos. They evacuated the city and made it fall to the ocean.

Ultimately, Juno's fears about hybrids (maybe) and humans were right since Eve, once adult ended up stealing and Apple from Eden with Adam and started the ultimate human rebellion…

For Kassandra, she succeeds at controlling the staff (contrary to someone in the modern day, right Layla?) and Aletheia explains her that she wanted to show that the gods are just flawed Isu, that free will can lead to chaos and total control is hardly better, hinting that balance between Assassins and Templars might be the only way to achieve harmony. Phoibe, Brasidas and Elpenor were nothing but Kassandra's thought and wishes projected, but Aletheia tells her that they are real because their memory matters and she wants her to make peace with loss before going for her long long life...

    6. Mysteries left/lack of information :

-Why did the devices from the 4 remaining creatures of Atlantis ended up being the keys to unlock it? Would Aletheia have chosen Aita's experiment for that? Kinda hypocrite if true… This is the only thing that might look like a plot hole in this story to me but all it needs would be an explanation to fix that unless it's a mystery on purpose like various other things it seems.

-Following that, how did she manage to get her consciousness into the staff? She might have found Consus notes at some point… maybe.

-Why did Juno and Aita attacked Poseidon in his thrown room where he probably had the technological advantage (and he did)? Honestly that could just indeed be put on Juno's well known arrogance.

-How did Juno manage to end on the Capitoline Triad despite being a criminal? Well, her crime is to have experimented on humans to prevent a rebellion which is something few Isu would care about outside of Atlantis I guess.

Anyway, sorry for the long post but I had fun analyzing this. Now, In case some would say « you are analyzing too much » or « the writters did not think about all that actually » I would say maybe to the first one but nitpicking everything about Odyssey is also overanalyzing things then. For the second, I think that's arrogant to always pretend writters don't know what they're doing when you don't like the writting.

I've been waiting for Isu lore for a long time and I'm overall happy with it. If some want to just say « no it's bad » and other bashing things, I'm not interested to discuss that because there is no actual lore breaking and the rest is up to what you like and don't like, it's subjective. I've seen too many circular arguments about Odyssey, I just wanted to know if some people enjoy this lore like me and do a recap of the Atlantis lore. Yet, it's true, I did feel like I had to detail stuff because for some reason all hell break loose when you like Odyssey and it's quite painful to see that in the fandom. Trying to say it's bad writting because you did not like does not make it bad, it's just that you don't like it. You expected something else and it's fine but I also expected different things in some of the other AC games and yet I still appreciate them. The developpers are people too, yes some Ubi employees don't care but many do care and are passionate about their work. Darby is not alone to work on AC with passion. And Ubisoft Québec also works with passion on their games wether you appreciate Syndicate and Odyssey or not, they deserve respect, not to be insulted.

Ultimately, there is no such things as « true AC fans », we are all fans interested in different part of the franchise. I was kinda burned out with AC until Origins came in and I loved Odyssey because the new style is refreshing to me and I wanted a story about the Isu. It was unconventional but interesting and I never doubted they would return to more concrete Assassins in the next game. Let me tell you, Hidden One/Assassin-lore fans, it was just a special AC game and they never intended to never return to explore the Assassins, rejoice now because it seems Darby and his colleagues got you covered on that lore in Valhalla!!

Ps : Sorry for Alexios fans, I said Kassandra only to simplify the text.

    Theory about the Ireland dlc.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Danu is also an Irish goddess and in ac lore, likely an important female Isu. The Tuatha Dé Danann of legend must have been the Isu culture that lived in Ireland tens of thousands of years ago and are likely related to the Isu who made the sword of Eden/exalibur next door in Britain. We see there were different cultures of Isu in expanded media too, Greek and Roman Isu were the same, Hindu god Isu. And the nordic and celtic Isu inhabited western and Northern Europe.

I finished Odyssey's main stories today ENTIRELY fueled by my hype to play Valhalla

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:13 PM PDT

Okay, maybe I wanted a bit to see how the story would play out. Odyssey, despite being a lot of fun, is definitely my second least favorite AC game, just because it feels too much like quantity over quality.

Also, I'm on the side that doesn't really like the direction the series started to take with this current trilogy. BUT, Valhalla has been growing immensely on me ever since the reveal trailer came out. Now, with the expansions trailer, it just won me over completely and I'm thrilled. I sat down yesterday and today almost all day to finish the first civ and cultists storylines, and I must say it pleased the hell out of me.

I absolutely loved to see Kassandra on modern day though, and just imagining all she did between a Ancient Greece and today is thrilling. Can't help but hope that we will see her again as a cameo on a different setting.

Tomorrow I will begin the DLC's. Any suggestions?

A defense for Assassins Creed and it’s General direction as a Franchise

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 01:13 AM PDT

As we all know all too well the gaming industry has been taking a turn for the worst in recent years. Most people have seen a video or two talking about how games are being way over hyped, then released way too early, and then being fixed later. And sometimes those fixes come as paid DLC's, which is the worst. But if you haven't seen a video on it then if you play video games(especially for a long time) you have most likely experienced it, anything from the dumpster fire of the once beloved Bethesda and Fallout Franchise, to games like Far Cry: New Dawn, and countless other examples. Amidst all of these lies I believe that Assassins creed is well on its way to being the most reliable franchise in the industry. Ever since the massive fail of AC Unity launch the dev team has been working on making their games fun, complete, and honest to what they promised. Although many people did not like Syndicate it was a massive improvement on Unity and was a good move for the franchise overall, you could clearly tell Ubi tried their hardest to make the characters engaging and improved on the combat system from Unity. Then cane Origins which in my opinion is the best AC game yet, it had a well polished combat system, a fun and engaging story, a mysterious world, a likable protagonist, and much more. Then was Odyssey which many people dislike because "it's not a real Assassins creed game" but it was still another game where Ubisoft kept that standard from Origins and created another fun and engaging game. Odyssey, Origins, and Syndicate all had paid DLC but all of it was a large addition to the game and well made, not just cut content added later. We'll have to see how Valhalla turns out and if it continues to withhold the standard and continue to improve.

Do you agree that both the Assassins and Templars are right to a certain extent?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:17 AM PDT

When it comes to the Templars, I can agree that there needs to be order, just not to the point where you tell people how to live their lives and take away the ability to make their own decisions. When it comes to the Assassins, I believe that it's right to fight for your freedom and to live your life as you see fit, however you shouldn't entirely eliminate order since the world would be in chaos if that happened.

I've just been thinking about this topic a lot since I just got the Ezio trilogy and I've been playing through all the games for the first time.

I'm never one to tear up while playing games, but AC Black Flag got me crying

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 02:52 AM PDT

What a journey Black Flag is. From Edward's character development, to the amazing scenery of the Caribbean. This game is truly beautiful in every way, shape and form. The one thing that brings it all together is that wonderful ending.

I was just sitting there patiently, waiting for the Abstergo Interlude to end and get back into the Animus to continue hearing my crew singing their shanties, the waves crashing the boat. But instead I was brought to a cutscene. I'm not one to really get cry in games, however this really got me. As the boat pulls up to dock and Anne starts singing, the tears were rolling down my cheek. Seeing my friends sitting there at the table, smiling back at me, the tears were pouring out.

After hearing about other people's opinions about the games after Black Flag, I'm very worried as to if I will ever feel the same way as I did with this one. I guess I will have to see.

Unity a gem of assassins creed or a flop

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 02:21 PM PDT

AC Unity, underrated and the black sheep?

Hey guys so recently I got AC Unity for cheap and started playing, and holy shit the game is so much better than everyone was making it out to be! The story can be a bit cheesy and off beat at times, but the parkour is the best in the series. The stealth is fast paced with cool and stylish animations. The world is built for those elements of parkour filled with a somewhat lively world, and separates the class of citizens by slums and mansions a block away from each other. Enhancing the revolution in the fore ground. Combat is wanky at points but sometimes turn into a test of reflexes like how an assassin would fight. The multiplayer when it runs properly which for me is often is awesome seeing four assassins move in the shadows together! In my opinion AC Unity is the black sheep of the series.

A theory on Assassins Creed Valhalla's New World

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 07:04 AM PDT

As someone who is really interested in the history and prehistory of the New World, I was stoked to see Vineland have its' place in Valhalla. My dream game is an Assassins Creed game set in Mesoamerica at the contact period between the Aztec and Spanish empires. That got me thinking of a theory: The Viking's trip to Vineland will explain how the brotherhood reached the new world. And in 500 years it will have found its way to the kingdoms and empires of Mesoamerica, maybe even the cities of South America. This would open the possibility of an Aztec or mesoamerican themed game in the future. I want nothing more than to walk the streets of the imperial city of Tenochtitlan, or see the huge urban centers of the Purepecha empire.

What is the smoothest AC in your opinion?

Mainly as far as parkour goes. I played Origins, then Odyssey first, and now I'm starting from the beginning. It's obviously a lot different.

Ubisoft surveys may reveal future Assassin's Creed locations...

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:54 AM PDT

This post and its links got me thinking about where the next Assassin's Creed game will take place. Which of these locations from the 2012 & 2017 Ubisoft surveys do you think is most likely?

2012 Ubisoft survey for AC locations included:

    1. The violent conflicts of the Imperial Dynasties in Medieval China

    2. The advent of the mighty British Empire during Victorian England

    3. The culmination of the Pharaoh Reign in Ancient Egypt

    4. The invasion of the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors

    5. The confrontation between British colonists and native Americans during The American Revolution

    6. The overthrow of the Tsar Empire by the Communists during the Russian Revolution

    7. The Warlord Battles in Feudal Japan

    8. The rise of Cesar's Empire in Ancient Rome

2017 Ubisoft survey for AC locations included:

    1. Genghis Khan and the Mongol invasions

    2. The invasion of the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors (2nd appearance)

    3. Joan of Arc's battles and rise of the Black Death during the Hundred Years War

    4. The Spanish Inquisition (setting of the Assassin's Creed movie)

    5. The Warlord Battles in Feudal Japan (2nd appearance)

    6. The Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta in Classical Greece

    7. William the Conqueror and the invasion of England

    8. Viking invasions and their great army

    9. The violent conflicts of the Imperial Dynasties in Medieval China (2nd appearance)

    10. Hannibal's invasion of Rome

    11. The Dark Ages and Historical King Arthur

    12. The rise of the Roman Empire in the Mediterranean Basin (2nd appearance)

    13. The conquests of Alexander the Great

    14. The overthrow of the Tsar Empire by the Communists during the Russian Revolution (2nd appearance)

The linked posts makes me think China is either next in line, or will be after another Rome/Europe installment. What do you think?
