Origins is one of, if not the best assassins creed game ever

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 09:28 AM PDT

Just completed the entire game (first playthrough, finished every quest and explored everything with the exception of a few (may be 2) sidequests and papiry, and I honestly think this is the best that was ever made.

*** Also, I finished this after I played odyssey so I think I might be a little too impressed after that experience but I think my point still stands

Character: Assassins are supposed to be the masters of disguise, deft, charming and extremely skillful. In terms of only these as quantifiers, I would definitely rate bayek below Ezio, Arno and Edward. But Bayek has something that made him my favorite: His passion for doing what is good. In every inch of the story, we not only see a father thirsting for a revenge, but also an egyptian trying to help his land and a medjay protecting his people. His emotion was so well expressed, every player will definitely put themselves in his shoes. Yes, we might not be as smooth as Ezio or Arno or Edward, but I believe everyone has something they loved as much as Bayek did, and that alone I think helps us relate to him very well.

World: When I first started playing, I came from unity. And when I saw there was hardly any parkour (compared to unity), I was disappointed. But it did not last long. Though there no longer are insane parkour stunts, there is an even bigger world and that world is awesome. I never thought there can be that much in a country that is mostly a desert. The temples, people, animals, tombs, the culture in different parts of Egypt, everything is so well made. Not even one thing felt out of place and even the individual areas are very well designed. There might not be a parkour stage of paris but there is a sprawling book of Egypt before us.

Quests: Of course, not every quest is unique (this is common in every assassins's creed). But the side quests are still fun, they did not feel like I am doing them to just grind some levels. The side objectives (like star gazing, elephant hunts, visiting temples, solving puzzles) are all worth doing and also give us an understanding of those days.

Finally, DLCs: Both dlcs are extremely good. Though the curse of Pharos was towards the fantasy side, it still is a great ride. Not gonna lie, I do think they went too deep into the fantasy part, but still I did enjoy it and I think it is fine since they somehow brought another artifact and all. Hidden ones tho, is a beauty. Tho the quest is nothing new (very similar to the main quest but I did not expect more, because in the end thats what assassins creed boils down to: Hunt the templars, in this case the templars are not some major character) but the implications and the conclusion are exceptional. Also, the area designs in Hidden ones are very nice, a lot of free running was gifted to us.

Overall, ASO did not just show us how the creed came to be, but also showed us how it's tenets were formed, how the man behind all of this was, until the end, truly a good man and strived for the greater good while not sacrificing anyone. A truly great story for our protectors in the shadows and how they came to be.

Just finished Syndicate. Compared to Unity, It felt like a cartoon.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:36 AM PDT

Syndicate was fun to play, but it seemed bizarrely immature when played right after Unity. Not sure if it was just the tone of the characters/setting or how easy it was to beat or what. Is this a common view?

    Super stoked for Origins, though!

France has the perfect setting for more stories

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 03:21 PM PDT

Finished playing 'Unity' and this is just a personal thought. Besides the fact that there's clearly 'Unity' which is already set on the French Revolution, I personally think there's far more stories that can be a perfect setting for the franchise; similar to the first entries of the Ezio Trilogy based on the Italian Renaissance.

The 100 Years War, French Wars of Religion, Black Death events, The Napoleonic Wars, and even more. We just saw a glimpse of the Revolution, it was nice and I appreciate it but France has a massive ton of stories that I would personally love to see, just a single entry on the franchise isn't enough on my opinion.

I really loved 'Unity' and the French setting is one of my favorites, besides Assassin's Creed I would love more games with the same aesthetic and environment.

The cane sword is incredibly dope

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 08:11 PM PDT

Anyone else really miss the cane sword? IDK if it was how fluid the cane sword felt or how cool the finishers and multi kills were with it, but I love it and miss it.

But I have seriously no idea how they'd bring it back

    That is all.

So Basim looks almost a decade older in the concept art than in the story trailer... could it be that we get to see him grow old in the game?

The Assassins in Valhalla possible [spoilers]

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 05:22 AM PDT

In the newest trailer for Valhalla, we got a look at a new Assassin, Basim. It seems clear that Basim doesn't like Eivor at first and also when his brother gives him the hidden blade in the trailer and I think I know why. In the first trailer for Valhalla, the cinematic trailer, Eivor wears the hidden blade on top of his hand instead of under (this is also seen in the new poster) but, in the poster for Basim, he wears the hidden blade on his wrist as all other assassin's do. (other than Darius). I'm guessing that Basim might tell Eivor to cut his finger off and Eivor will just be like "why don't you just flip it over" and Basim will probably think that's disrespectful.

Which AC Game had the best starting scene?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2020 12:07 AM PDT

For me, it was Origins. I got into Origins a month ago. I was skeptical since it was completely different from other games in the series(except Odyssey). But man was I impressed! The starting scene, the 'sleep' dialogue, wow!

The starting scene in Origins is goddamn chills. For those who have not seen it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1xDgqnx8QM. Watch it, its about 2 minutes long and doesn't spoil the story.

Was there any other AC game that had such an awesome starting scene? Been some time since I played the others, so go on refresh my mind!

So with AC: Ming Storm novel getting a French Translation later this year according to Access the Animus, how long do we have to wait for a English translation?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 07:17 PM PDT

So unless your aware, the Assassin's Creed novel Ming Storm, which is a novelization of Shao Jun's story in the first Chronicles game that was released last year in China, is getting a French translation later this year, according to Access the Animus. With that in mind, how long do we have to wait before a English translation comes? A extra year? Perhaps a few months?

He was trying to mess with me by not going to the point where the mission ends and throwing poison bombs. So I started killing myself and forcing him to go through loading screens. Been at it for about 15 mins lmao

He's too stubborn to quit/kick me and I'm too stubborn to quit myself. Shows how some people have dedication to being assholes (myself included hahaha)

Playing Syndicate, used Eagle Vision and heard weird, creepy voices talking about serving a "Grandmaster." Did I miss something?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 09:28 AM PDT

So I'm doing a Templar Hunt down in Lambeth, I go to take out a sniper and afterwards I turn on Eagle Vision to scope out the area. I heard these creepy-ass children talking to what sounded like a schoolteacher, about serving a grandmaster. I looked around but didn't see anything. This is my first AC game, (I played some AC 2 but didn't really like it,) so I was wondering if this is related to the plot, or if its a secret cult hidden underground or something. I did some googling but all I found was forum posts about audio bugs.

Oh, follow up question, should I try and find all the Music Boxes now to get the treasure, or wait until I've cleared each area? (No spoilers about what the treasure is please.)

    Thanks for any help!

Just started a new playthrough of ACIV after finishing it 6 years ago, and after replaying ACIII

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:57 PM PDT

Man they are such different games. IV is so much more polished and player-friendly, it's unreal: viewpoints becoming fast travel points, the seamless weapon wheel, and then there's the bright colourful world and how the land and sea stuff fit together so well (not that I've gotten the Jackdaw yet, I forgot how much time you spend with the Templars at the beginning)... No wonder IV is such a fan-favourite. It feels weird to walk around the Ubisoft Abstergo Entertainment offices though, for ovious reasons.

(also, don't mean to be rude, but when posting I got white text in white boxes, makes it kinda hard to see what I'm typing... Is it just me?)

Isu tech and the afterlife (Spoilers)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 02:43 PM PDT

So I've been replaying The Fate of Atlantis and it once again got me thinking about how real the events of it and CotP are. It seems to me that the "afterlife realms" we see in both are very similar to the Grey that Juno resided in; a digital world.

If anybody has seen Doctor Who, it made me think of the Nethersphere. Basically, if you die within the vicinity of the "hard drive", your consciousness gets uploaded. The Isu seem capable of this, and thus it would mean that it actually was Phoibe, Brasidas, Elpenor etc. in the Underworld - the real them. Though I imagine the Isu we see are merely digital constructs given their lack of awareness of the solar flare or the outside world.

Given that when you die in Elysium or the Underworld, you seemingly reawaken in the prison Tartaros, that kind of makes it the recycle bin, funnily enough.

Also explained is Juno saying that Desmond and Clay are inside the Grey. There must be Isu afterlife servers all over the world. Question is: why didn't the Isu all go into one to avoid the cataclysm?

Just wondering because I'm having a rough as hell time trying to find it and I can't find ANYONE online at all who's actually found it. Starting to think that it was never actually added into the game.

[Spoilers] A Condensed History of The British Isles - Common Setting Discussions

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 09:00 AM PDT

A common trait Assassin's Creed groups have is the constant theorizing about future settings, because historical tourism is one of the best parts of the series. This series of posts will act as a counter to my Mildly Obscure setting discussions, but rather than looking at a single point, I will be taking a broad setting that is popular and looking at several potential settings to explore within it. Today's setting is the condensed history of the British Isles.

    King Arthur

The British Isles were initially ruled by Celtic Tribes, namely the Britons but eventually became merged with the Romans in the 1st-century BCE. The Romans would eventually withdraw from Britain in the early 5th century, leaving behind only a handful of stragglers and potentially the King of Britain, who was both Roman and Briton. Ambrosius Aurelianus may have been the real Arthur, alive in the late 5th and early 6th centuries. With the decline of the Western Roman Empire, the migratory phase began and the groups of the Angles and Saxons began invading England. Arthur was either a king or General (Perhaps the General or cousin of Ambrosius) who helped lead Briton victory at the battle of Badon Hill, likely in the modern county of Wiltshire. Some reports said that Arthur alone killed 900 men that day using his sword, which according to lore was a sword of Eden, pulled from a stone. Many stories include Arthur's rule from Camelot and the creation of the Knights of the Round Table. This is very likely just fantasy not in line with an actual historical Arthur but seems to be played up in AC Lore, as Arthur did in fact belong to the Order of the Ancients. According to Alan Rikkin, he held very idealistic views. It is possible that Arthur founded the British Rite of the Order of the Ancients (the Knights of the round table), and worshipped Mithras, as it appears they do in AC Valhalla.

Nearly 20 years after Baden, Arthur battled with a Roman in Britain, during which his cousin Mordred came south, took his throne, and married his wife. Arthur met Mordred at the Battle of Camlann, likely near Camboglanna on Hadrian's Wall where both were killed. Arthur's body was then taken to the island of Avalon. Back in the early medieval period, far more of England was actually swamp and alluvium, leading some to believe that Glastonbury Tor is Avalon, and was surrounded by water 1500 years ago. Today there remains next to no evidence of Camelot or Avalon, though some Latin inscriptions lead some people to think Tintagel is the site of Camelot before being turned into the 11-century castle that stands in ruins today.

Unfortunately, this setting probably won't come soon due to the recent news of a game codenamed Avalon that was like Monster Hunter in Arthurian England being canceled by Serge Hascoet because of his misgivings about fantasy. Ironic. Serge has since left Ubisoft amidst multiple allegations and investigations, but most of the team for that project has left or moved to other projects as well.

    The Norman Invasion

The Angles and Saxons did eventually succeed in conquering Britain, forming the heptarchy, and controlling Britain for about 600 years. During this period, the Viking age began with the sacking of Lindisfarne in 793, and they quickly became a scourge throughout Europe, especially in France wherein 911 the Viking Rollo formed the Duchy of Normandy. The Dukes of Normandy would maintain good relations with the Angle and Saxon kingdoms and intermarry. Around this time, Macbeth, grandson of Malcolm II of Scotland, made a claim against Duncan I and killed him in Battle in 1040. Macbeth ruled Alba for 17 years total, though in 1054 Edward the Confessor allied with Malcolm III to depose Macbeth, and in 1057, killed Macbeth Battle of Lumphanan. In 1060, Edward the Confessor died childless, and his cousin William of Normandy claimed the throne. At that time he did not yet have the support from Normandy, and Harold Godwinson, an earl took the throne. It took 6 years to consolidate power before he could invade England.

On January 1st, 1066, William finally was able to prepare to conquer England. At the same time, Harald Hadrada, successor and claimant of Cnut the Great's empire, who had briefly controlled the English Crown, laid claim to the throne of England. He invaded just before William could, and met Harold in battle on the 20th of September near York. 5 days later, Harald Hadrada was killed at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. At that time, William was landing in southern England, and on the 14th of October, met Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings where Harold died. William immediately marched North and captured London where he was able to subdue remaining forces. On the 25th of December, William had Conquered England and was crowned as King. Danes would attempt to raid and reclaim the land, but they would never again hold it, ending the Viking Age. William and the Normans would attempt to conquer all of Britain, during which time they began building castles, including the Tower of London. Prior to this, there were no stone castles in England, only fortresses and ruins left from the Romans. The House of Normandy would only last about 100 years before Matilda, daughter of King Henry I, married into House Plantagagent from Anjou, and the House of Anjou reigned until the Plantagagents could reclaim their titles 50 years later.

Honestly, I would love to see this as a DLC for Valhalla, repurposing the main map of England and giving a new self-contained story.

    First War of Scottish Independence

In 1286, the King of Scotland died, and his successor, a young girl, became deathly ill just a few years later. By 1290 multiple families were laying claim to the throne, and Edward I of England was brought in to arbitrate. Just prior to this, Edward had led a crusade in the holy land, and then followed it up by conquering Wales. Robert the Bruce and John Balliol were the two with the strongest claims, and Edward chose John who was an extremely weak king, handing over power to Edward I despite protests of the Scottish people. Edward would go on to assert his power for 6 more years.

In 1297, after refusing to support the English at the battle of Dunbar, John was deposed by John Comyn III leading to the rise of Andrew de Moray who helped lead at Dunbar. Within a year, he joined forces with the knight William Wallace where they fought at Stirling Bridge and Falkirk. At some point between the two battles, Andrew died in a battle. After another 5 years of fighting, William Wallace was captured at Robroyston near Glasgow in 1305. He was taken to London and executed with a limb being placed on a spike in several major cities. In 1306, Robert the Bruce worked out a deal with John Comyn III and Edward I. After realizing he was betrayed, he killed Comyn and claimed himself, king of Scotland, in 1307. Bruce maintained the War for Independence for another 21 years, leading a series of campaigns across Scotland and Northern England. In 1314 his brother invaded Ireland, only to die in 1318. In 1320 the Pope formally recognized the Kingdom of Scotland while England did not. Edward II died in 1327, and Edward III finally recognized Scottish independence in 1328.

    War of the Roses

Did you like Game of Thrones before it went to shit? Of course you did, literally, everyone did. A Song of Ice and Fire/ A Game of Thrones is actually (loosely) based on this period, the War of the Roses. Honestly, there could be a whole post discussing the politics and back and forth of the War of the Roses. But basically, the house of Plantagenet had 2 cadet houses, the Lancasters and Yorks and the King, Henry VI was very mentally ill and had no heir. So the Lancasters and Yorks tried to figure out who should succeed him; Edward Beaufort the Duke of Somerset and a Lancaster, or Richard of York. Richard named himself Lord Protector and imprisoned Henry VI after his wife became pregnant, in 1453 leading to the outbreak of conflict. Henry regained some sanity and entered rebellion against the Yorkists who won the First Battle of St Albans, recapturing and imprisoning King Henry VI. The war would go back and forth for literally decades with the Yorkists retreating to Calais, retaking London, losing important battles, and so forth. Both sides were nearly exterminated by 1485 when Henry Tudor, a distant Lancaster relation, took power. He married Elizabeth of York, trying to bring peace to the houses, though would officially end the war with the Battle of Stoke Field in 1487. Some uprisings would continue until 1497, but Henry VII officially became king, securing the Tudor Dynasty. Shakespeare would write that the houses voted for the next king using a white or red rose, but in reality, both houses wore the crest of a rose; red for Lancaster, and white for York. There's not much Lore from this time but we know Templars attempted to influence Henry VII until assassins under command of Ezio ended the plot in 1503 and he allied himself with the Assassins.

    Tudor England

The Tudors continued to rule England for while, and the most famous of the monarchs was Elizabeth I. She came to power in 1558 after her sister Mary Tudor died, but some Catholics in the north were concerned about her claim and in 1569 began a rebellion in the north to make Mary Queen of the Scots become queen. In Lore, Elizabeth was in control of an apple and an ally of the assassins. The issue was that she just abdicated the throne and fled Scotland and was currently imprisoned in England… This in turn, though, caused more Catholics to turn against her and the Pope excommunicated her. The rebellion was subdued within a few months though, which was good because then Ireland entered an open Rebellion in 1569 called the Desmond Rebellions. The Desmond dynasty of Southern Ireland desired to maintain control as the crown was gaining power, and as a result, started a rebellion. Between 1569 and 1573 the rebellion was squashed with the leader, James FitzGerald giving his son to the crown as a hostage and prostrating himself. He went to mainland Europe and Morocco and returned to Ireland in 1579 with the intent to invade it, laying siege to several forts and cities. He was executed in 1580 with his body placed on a pike and the next 3 years were spent hunting down associates across Ireland.
At this point, Elizabeth already had several Catholics who despised her Protestant rule attempt to assassinate her, most notably during the Ridolfi Plot in 1571 formed by an international banker (sounds like an easy Templar Target); and the Throckmorton Plot in 1583. In 1586 the Babington Plot was uncovered, and Mary Queen of the Scots was executed for her participation a year later. Phillip of Spain was angered by this as a Protestant killed a Catholic, and due to that and desiring land, sent a massive armada to invade England, only for it to be destroyed in 1588. He tried again in 1597 and failed again. Shakespeare and Francis Bacon were enjoying some fame at this point and in 1599 the Globe theatre was opened officially in London. In 1601, several members of Elizabeth's court opened into rebellion to gain more court power but were executed within a month. However, several of her dear friends died in 1602 leading her to become extremely depressed, and in 1603 die. While she is often called the "virgin queen" she was anything but, likely secretly having several illegitimate children; but with no legitimate heir, her cousin, James I of Scotland became King, ending the Tudor Dynasty. Her apple was recovered and sent to Paris according to Lore. In 1605 Robert Catesby led a plot to blow up the House of Lord in London on the 5th of November in an attempt to kill King James I. This could make a solid post-game sequence, ending, or DLC.

    English Civil Wars

James I son Charles I became King of Scotland, Ireland, and England in 1625 and began to make reforms to the church of England to the dismay of Puritans and the Kirk of Scotland. In 1638 this came to a boiling point resulting in the Bishops Wars between 1638 and 1640, with the rebels winning. The result was the beginning of the destabilization of England, Ireland, and Scotland. Protestants fleeing to the Plantation of Ulster in Northern Ireland began to upset the Irish Catholic, leading to the Irish Rebellion of 1641, which was quickly put down but erupted into a broader conflict of the Irish Confederate Wars between the Catholic Irish and the Protestant Scots and English in Ireland. Scotland exploded into a civil war in 1644 between the Covenanters who controlled Scotland since the 1639 rebellion and backed the English parliament, and the Royalists who supported Charles I.

In 1642, Charles I entered into armed conflict with Parliament, led by Robert Devereux, Thomas Fairfax, and Oliver Cromwell. After 7 years, the parliament had taken control and executed Charles I, and beginning the Commonwealth of England. After the Covenanters of Scotland won their civil war in 1645, they supported Charles II to be their King and supported him to be the King of England and Ireland as well. Oliver Cromwell, however, went to war with Charles II and in 1651 after the Battle of Worcester Charles II fled to mainland Europe. Oliver Cromwell invaded Ireland next and completely conquered it by 1553, and with that, the Rump Parliament was dissolved to create the Protectorate with Oliver Cromwell named Lord Protector. In 1558, Oliver died leading his son Richard to be Lord Protector. Richard's inability to control parliament and the military-led to the dissolution of the Protectorate and military which was then seized by George Munck to hold until the king could return. Charles II returned from France and met with the parliament, having the deceased Oliver Cromwell dug, decapitated, and in 1561 Charles II was restored as King of England, Ireland, and Scotland. Not much lore exists for these figures, but it'd be an easy move to make Cromwell a Templar.

Something I really hope AC Valhalla improves on from the last two installments is much better HUD management.

I actually think these games look 100x less "arcade" like and much more immersive when you remove the HUD, which in odyssey and origins you can do, BUT, they have extremely extravagant divisions, going from an medium amount of hud which is still to much, to literally non existent, making finding your way to the next waypoint more of a chore than a journey.

By this generation it should be much more applicable, having the option to turn on and off whichever peice you choose, it can help with frame rates and clutter and, overall, tailor make your experience, something the AC franchise is heavily leaning towards in the current game style

Odyssey ending...definitely feels like they planned more DLC for it

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 12:11 PM PDT

With over 130 hours into Odyssey, I just finished all the DLC. The last episode of Atlantis was....underwhelming. No real conclusion, no epilogue for Kass/Alexios, though I suppose you could consider handing over the staff to Layla as that. It definitely felt like they were planning on more DLC at some point. No indication of whether Layla "redeemed" herself or what became of Aleathia (sp?). Plus, with all the subtle references to Zeus and Olympus, I suspect that may have been the original target for the DLC.

I don't know, it just "feels" like there was supposed to be more and it never happened. Odyssey's world is definitely full of opportunity for more, but I wonder if Ubi cancelled it in favor of shifting resources to Valhalla. It's a bit of a shame, really. Such a great game and it "ends" on almost little more than a whimper.

How do I unlock the time hack in AC3 Remastered?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2020 06:53 AM PDT

I finished the story and got the Altair outfit. I tried checking the setting menu, all of them are available except the time hack.
