AC should have a Mayan game, definitely not an Aztec one

Aztecs and conquistadors was a setting on a survey Ubisoft sent out a few years ago for potential game locations. I think it's likely that this will actually happen. I'm dying for a Mayan game. But I believe the game should absolutely not be Aztec. (Actually, both would be great. But if there's only one, it should be Mayan.)

First, it's simply a more interesting setting. The Classic Mayan Collapse around the 8th century would be the most interesting period of Mesoamerican history for an AC game. There was a huge network of independent city-states with amazing architecture going far beyond Aztec architecture in my opinion. Certainly, this was the period with the largest cities, including the largest pre-colonization city, Teotihuacan, a city-state which interacted with the Maya. A Maya setting would be vastly more engaging as an AC, parkour-heavy game. And the theme of a civiliation collapsing, not from any outside aggressor, but due to its own failures, is epic and relevant to present times.

Second, it's deeply depressing that involving conquistadors is the first instinct for us westerners. Having the colonization dynamic as part of the game would seriously derail the focus on the Mesoamerican civilization. We should be able to be fully immersed in this pre-columbian culture, its politics, conflicts, and everyday life. That would be extremely groundbreaking. Compare that to a narrative centered on "oh shit, Europeans are invading." That's so much more typical, so much more expected, so much less educational and less of a really different, unique gaming experience.

Third, the impact is much more profound and beautiful to make a game around the Maya, since the Maya people still exist. Unlike the Aztecs, which was pretty much just a political unit, the Maya are an ethnic group that still exist today. Many people in Central America identify as Maya, and personally identify with the historic civilization. Imagine how you would feel if you're a Mayan and you get to play this game. I should also mention that the Mayan people are not exactly the most privileged group of people in Mexico and other Central American countries. Their culture deserves more large-scale appreciation.

Fourth and finally, it would be very interesting to examine Mesoamerican organizations philosophically similar to the Assassins and Templars, like how Odyssey approached it. I don't really have any particular attachment to the specific Assassin and Templar organizations, and I would be happy seeing similar new world organizations and their interaction with Isu artifacts left in the Americas. Since this would be in pre-contact America's, this would be a different look at Isu influence distinct from the assassin/templar conflict of Eurasia. Yet since that conflict has universal themes, and since one of the apples of Eden was likely left in the America's anyway, we would explore the universality of secret societies and conflicting ideologies even in a unique and highly developed culture. Mesoamericans should not be treated as if they didn't have their own major historical dramas until the Europeans arrived and brought the Assassins and Templars with them. Assassin/Templar style groups in Mesoamerica would be just as powerful and just as interesting.

I'm going to be politically blunt now and I hope this doesn't rub certain people the wrong way. The only real reason I could see for Ubisoft going with Aztecs is that it could have European characters, and the studio has so far shown a distinct Eurocentric bias in their choice of settings. I would hope that the excitement of having a huge Mesoamerican open world game would greatly outweigh whatever benefit to sales that would come with including a Conquistador on the box art, or whatever. I think it would. Regardless, I wrote this post because I really, really don't want Ubisoft to release a game like this only to water down the deep engagement with Mesoamerican society by focussing half of the story on European characters. I hope you all would agree.

EDIT: I've been thinking about this a bit more, and I think a Mayan game followed immediately by an Aztec game would be perfect. The Mayan game would have all the hype of the first Mesoamerican game. Then the Aztec game could shift the focus to the Spanish Conquista. The Aztec main character would learn to become an Assassin by uncovering the (by that point ancient) lost knowledge of the Mayan protagonist from the first game. I think the narrative continuity and thematic shifts could also be great from a business point of view.

Character design for a game I’d love to see

I am a few hours into odyssey and i am getting annoyed that you cannot use shields

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:05 AM PDT

it makes no sense especially in the big battles when a shield was pretty much the only thing keeping soldiers alive at that point not to mention to fight in formation they needed them even though the game throws formation out the window but its getting annoying i get killed and think if i only had a fucking shield instead of this stupid prey shit so what do you think

The Food Mechanic might keep me from Valhalla

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 05:26 PM PDT

There's a lot that I'm not sold on about Valhalla (stealth hood, stamina bar, raiding parties to name a few) but the food mechanic might break me. I can't think of a more miserable task in a fantasy game than scavenging for food before a battle. If it were a different game or franchise, sure, but coming off the game where you're basically a demigod it just seems so out of place and so unnecessarily grind-y in a game where the appeal is mostly running around and absolutely wrecking people.

Do you think Arno deserves a sequel?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:13 PM PDT

Personally I think a sequel for arno is a must, I want him to do something remarkable in the parisian brotherhood of assassins and hopefully get his sense of humor back plus I really like unity's parkour and setting

Were Vikings what we want them to be?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 02:42 PM PDT

Very interesting article from a professor of medieval History clarifying common conceptions his students had about Vikings.

Conception #1: The Vikings Had an Egalitarian Society

Conception #2: Vikings were the Toughest, Most Violent Warriors in the Middle Ages

Conception #3: Vikings were More Skilled Fighters and Seafarers

Conception #4: Viking Age Society was Democratic

When you play assassins creed, do you imagine it from the view that everything you do is canon, or from the view that you are in the animus?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:05 AM PDT

I know the animus is canon and that you are the modern day character playing as someone else, and that whatever you do doesn't have to happened, for example using a certain weapon as Bayak doesn't have to have happened because the outcome is the same etc.

I just wondered what people think since I know that people do imagine that everything they do is canon.

    Obvious Missed Opportunity in Odyssey

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:11 PM PDT

No details have been made about Valhalla DLC but the recent comic info mentioned some goings on in Asgard which reminded me of a painfully obvious missed opportunity in Odyssey. There was no Mount Olympus. How you can have a game about ancient Greece and it's mythology without this is nuts to me. It's not even on the map as some kind of easter egg. I would have really enjoyed it if they had replaced LOTFB with a Mount Olympus story. It would give a great excuse to show more gods as Isu and provide more MD story. It could have fit in nicely with the Fate of Atlantis too.

Who’s descendants would you like to see?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 10:42 AM PDT

I was thinking about what Jacob and Evie's descendants are doing during the modern day and it got me wondering, if you could choose to see any of the Assassin's Creed protagonists descendants during any period of time (for example, Connor's great-great-great-whatever, or a descendant of Arno's getting his disco groove on during the 1970s) who would it be?

I personally think a descendant way after Ezio but way before Desmond would be cool, seeing them uncover the incredible legacy of their great-great-great(so on so forth) grandfather.

Will the next gen consoles version of this game be a significant Step Up?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 09:01 PM PDT

Have the resolutions and frame rates for current-gen and or next-gen been confirmed? I'm assuming the PS4 and Xbox One, and their enhanced versions, will be approximately the same as Origins and odyssey.

Has there ever been an AC game where you could set traps to aid your stealth gameplay? Traps or tripwires of any kind? TIA for any insights.

How do u get the “Impress Warren Vidic” achievement in 2020 with the Ezio Collection?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:12 PM PDT

I've owned the collection since 2018, so if there's a patch i need to remove to bring the glitch. Just plz give me instructions on how. It would be even greater if u would make it into a vid, IF u r able to. If not, just a normal Reddit answer should be fine. I play on a PS4 btw.

How many of you will be playing Valhalla on a next gen console?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:07 AM PDT

Just as the title says how many of you plan to play the new assassins creed on a next gen console? What edition do you plan on getting?

I'm on this boat as well, I sold my old console and now I'm just waiting. And I'm a little sad I didn't order the collectors edition of Valhalla before they sold out...

New to the series, just completed AS2 and absolutely loved it!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:04 AM PDT

Man I can't believe I waited more than 10 years to play this game! I had so much fun and I'm definitely intrigued by the story and how it ended.

I am slightly concerned as the general consensus seems to be that the Ezio trilogy are the best games in the series so I'm wondering if it will all be downhill from here..

Im going to play them in order but I am particularly looking forward to Odyssey and Origins
