    Ubisoft and the hype train

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:16 AM PDT

As much as I'm excited for this game, the fact that Ubisoft:

    • did an 8 hour stream of designing a graphic to tease the cinematic trailer
    • released a short cinematic trailer to announce the game
    • hyped up a "gameplay" trailer only to release an edited in-game cinematic that teases actual gameplay

What is the marketing purpose of this? To keep assassins creed in the news cycle? Call me old fashioned but these teasers are a waste of time for everyone, from game devs to fans to journalists. This makes me nervous that it may be an odyssey re-skin and they're banking on hyping up the Viking setting for it to sell.

[SPOILERS] A thorough Gameplay Teaser Screenshot Analysis

    Posted: 07 May 2020 01:46 PM PDT

After a week of anticipation, we have finally seen the gameplay teaser for Valhalla to mixed reviews. Despite some obvious backlash, we did get some really great screenshots, and I wanted to break down what some of that meant. I'm going to start off with the very simple stuff first. All Links for screenshots will be to Access the Animus on Facebook.

    Information Confirmation

We initially see Eivor standing in a house and potentially customizing his tattoos, as the next shot of him we see does have a number of tattoos present. We also see a Norse Feast likely in a mead hall of some sort.

After a few more shots we see confirmation of the hidden blade again, and is once again being worn on top of the forearm, and is encrusted with jewels and gold. The Norse were known to dress well, so it's not overly surprising to see this. We also soon see Eivor throwing axes which is a confirmed skill that we can learn. These axes also look far more historically accurate than previous shots indicated and even the house behind seems more historically authentic. Then another confirmation of our pet raven which will be part of our Odin Sight (the rebranded version of Eagle Vision from origins and Odyssey).

    Gameplay and Story Speculation

After a brief moment of sailing, we see Eivor blowing a horn as a raid begins on some sort of small fortification. We briefly see Eivor running through what appears to be a small Anglo-Saxon village that has era-appropriate architecture being about 1 story tall, thatch roof, and wattle and daub walls, though we do see some stone foundations which is a bit anachronistic. Stone was primarily used in bigger cities where it could be easily looted from Roman ruins. We also see the town engulfed in flames, which suggests this is either an important story moment or perhaps we'll see some dynamic destruction during raids which were hinted at by some previous screenshots. Eivor then punches the man from a running leap, which hopefully is a hint at one-hit kills coming back.

Several shots in a row appear to be setting up for a large battle where we see multiple Anglo-Saxon guards lining up at what appears a city gate, and a man clothed in a dark green tunic stepping out of the shadows. I have a few ideas where this could be that I'll discuss in the setting speculation. I have a feeling the man may be a Saxon Templar, but nothing definitive.

A few frames in the trailer show a stave church and a man praying to a large cross next to a hole in the wall, suggesting religion will likely play a bit of a role in this game, likely similar to how origins handled it. We also see a large statue of a Norse god. Due to the hammer in the hand which is similar to Thor's famous Mjolnir, and the lightning in the background, I'm inclined to believe this statue is meant to be Thor. Odin does seem to be a major god Eivor will worship, but Odin traditionally carried the spear Gungnir.

Next, we have a Siege on this massive fortress. I have a feeling this is in Wessex if not Sussex due to flag design being the four birds, though it's clearly using roman ruins to be built up a bit by using Anglo Saxon wood designs. Especially since there's no keep like other things we've seen, this looks far more realistic for what would be available at the time. We do see some Ballistas on the fort from origins, which were pretty out of use by 873ce, but considering it's a revived roman fort, I think it at least makes sense. In the back of the fort, we can see some 2 story buildings that appear to have wattle and daub walls, timber framing, and a thatch roof. Going towards the gate is a battering ram (the name of which Norse take way too seriously) that loses part of its top before getting to the gate. I believe this is one of the Assaults Darby had mentioned previously which may task us with protecting siege engines (yes this is historically accurate btw) during a massive assault on a keep, while the burning village we saw with Eivor blowing a horn is just a smaller raid. I'm hoping this means that raids will be more like a conquest battle in a city or town and assaults will be large sieges like Shadow of War's Fortress Sieges where some tactics and preparation have to be made and certain objectives are taken to complete the assault.

Finally, we have several shots of large trees and Celtic stone circles. Stone circles were a decent side quest in Origins and I have a feeling they will be playing an important part to play here too. This tree, in particular, made me think it might be Yggdrasil and how we could visit Valhalla. Or perhaps we go on spiritual journeys as Connor does at these stone circles.

    Setting Speculation

We have a few easy locations right off the bat in this teaser. The first is Stonehenge which is in modern-day Wiltshire England, about 2 hours west of London and around the border of Wessex and Mercia. Honestly, these classic English Hills and ancient stones look amazing. The stave church we see is clearly somewhere in Norway, and the scene where our Drakkar leaves port appears to be showing our original hometown, which has a similar design to the CGI trailer. Following that we see a large watchtower in the mountains surrounding a Fjord in Norway. I'm having trouble finding info on this and appears to be pretty historically inaccurate. I have a feeling it's meant to be some sort of watchtower.

During the scenes with guards lining up outside, we see a bit of what's around them to find large stone walls and 2-3 story houses, implying this is a larger city for the time. It's not clear where they are, but the largest cities attacked during the Great Heathen Army's invasion after 873 were Wareham, Gloucester, and Chippenham where Alfred was defeated during Christmas and forced to hide in the swamps.

We also have this beautiful shot of the English hills with the sun to the west, behind some mountains and clouds and snowy mountains to the north. In the middle, we have a stone circle with a large stone in the center. I believed this is Mercia, as some previous speculation was making me think the snow was for Scotland or Northern Northumbria, and a large mountain range separates Mercia and Wales on Mercia's western border so that all makes sense. I looked into stone circles a bit and could only find one after about an hour of searching that had a single stone in the center like that, and it's Barbrook One. This stone circle is in the hilly area of the "peak district" just outside of modern Sheffield, which is in England and where Northern Mercia was, and not far from Northumbria. The location works well, and Ubi usually tries to be somewhat accurate with world design, so I think Barbrook One is a really good guess for this location.

Now here's where we get a little conspiratorial with locations. To start off with I've been looking at the flags and see a few that have been used a lot. The first flag we see has golden birds with a cross on it. The bird's design was originally used by the kingdom of Sussex but Wessex conquered Sussex in 829, and likely incorporated the flag. We do see several other flags of Wessex, including dragons, which I'll explain in a moment. This has made me think that when we see this Flag with the birds and the cross, it's likely a reference to Sussex. Thus the aforementioned fortress that has the flag will likely be in Sussex, or at least Wessex as a whole. It looks like there may be water in the background, and with the high cliffs nearby one thought I had was that this could be near Dover (Kent) or Hastings (Sussex).

The dragon flags are where we see some interesting debate around how accurate Assassin's Creed is. See an old story from Historia Brittonum (written by Britons around 828ce) details the story of how a castle was built every day and destroyed every night for some reason until the king ordered the ground excavated which showed two dragons fighting each other, one red and one white, and soon the white dragon killed the red dragon. This white dragon was used as a metaphor for the Anglo Saxons who have invaded England and nearly killed the Romano-Britons. As a result, the remaining Britons and celts who remained in Wales would take up the Red Dragon as their Flag. The Anglo-Saxons would often use a white dragon, and most flags of Wessex were the dragon of Wessex, which was a gold dragon on a red background.

The easiest screenshot is when Eivor tackles a man. As they're about to hit the ground we see stone walls, a single-story anglo Saxon home, and a red flag with a gold imprint. It's difficult to make out what it is, but I believe it's either wings or a dragon. If it's a dragon it could be anywhere in Wessex. The wings were a specific crest for the area known as Somerset which is in western Wessex just west of Wiltshire and south of Wales separated by the Bristol Channel. The Great Heathen Army passed through this area around 877, so it makes sense that we might see some fallout from that.

The final Screenshot is the trickiest because I think it might be wales, showing a soldier overlooking a castle from atop a hill. So to the left of the image we see a large tower and a few buildings in the trees, which I think might be a church. The Welsh were largely Christian at this time, so that would make sense. Wales is marked by tall mountains on its borders but wetter lands and hills on the interior, which is what we do see with a lake to the left of the soldier and streams and rivers around the castle going out to a possible large body of water like the Bristol Channel. The man is wearing a red gambeson (historically accurate armor) but uses a large kite shield with the double-headed eagle on it. The symbol was popular in Roman times and may have been used by France, but it was a symbol primarily used by Albania. My best guess is that this shield may have been traded to the region from France or Norse traders. The Flag, however, uses a yellowed or off white background with a green bottom and a red flag. This is very similar to the modern flag of wales and as I mentioned earlier the red dragon was a symbol of wales. So I looked at the castle just to the right of this man to see if I could find anything similar. It appears to have a keep in the center with walls around it on a hill which is an island between some rivers or streams, requiring a bridge to cross the water to the main entrance and an outer gate near the entrance to the bridge. Well, that description perfectly matches the ruins of White Castle in Monmouthshire, Wales. It too is on a hill surrounded by water requiring crossing a bridge with an outer gate. And the White Castle in wales is in a swampier area in south Wales, not far from mountains or hills and whose waterways connect into the Bristol Channel, not far from the now capital of Cardiff. Wales does make sense as a location, as Vikings did raid there a bit, including possibly controlling the city or founding Swansea as a trading hub.

That said, this is all still speculation based on pre-release images. Please take it with a grain of salt, and let me know what you think!

A tribute to the all the cinematic trailers

    Posted: 07 May 2020 07:06 PM PDT

Some extra details which haven't "officially" been confirmed yet, but also haven't been talked about.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:35 PM PDT

Yes, you can hide in hay stacks again.

Due to next gen, we can now render blade clumps for grass, similar to how Fifa does it. So short grass is 3-dimensional and moves with the wind.

Tree running akin to AC3 is not returning, but there will be certain instances like in Origins where you can climb a tree.

Weather affects are coming back (as shown in the latest trailer). Rainfall, snowfall, thunder/lightning, etc. Slightly improved lighting effects, but also much better render distance and fog.

Hunting and fishing become proper mechanics, and you can track animals through deep snow.

Flaired as rumour because technically none of you are sure if I'm telling the truth, but that's up to you.

Imagine something like Assassins Creed Unity in 2020

    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:55 AM PDT

Just imagine if something like Assassins Creed Unity was released now and it was never released years ago, people would be going crazy over it. After the release of Odyssey, a lot of fans are now itching for dense cities, hooded assassins, hidden blades, free-running (around interior and exterior of buildings), and co-op etc. This is especially true after the lack of these elements for a few years. If something like Unity was released now, it would probably have more success than when it did in 2014! After almost 6 years, it still is a great part of the franchise but was compared to games released only just before it, it didn't stand out as much as it would stand out now. Just food for thought.

Just got the AC unity art books, it's so sad that the game was the most aesthetic looking out of all the AC games (just my opinion) but the story and bugs didn't do it justice

After a month and a half of playing, I finally finished Origins

    Posted: 07 May 2020 09:43 PM PDT

56 hours and 52 levels later, I've finally completed Origins. What a phenomenal game!

As much as I love the stories of the older games, the gameplay never appealed to me. With Origins, I got to experience an amazing story with (IMO so far. I haven't played Odyssey yet) the best playable setting/historical period in the series. The gameplay is stellar, and I never got sick of it. I'm blown away by the quality of this game.

As of right now, I'm considering this a perfect 10/10 game.

I think multi kill animations should return

    Posted: 07 May 2020 08:25 PM PDT

For me they add so much to a game, when you can get a really cool kill animation it just feels so bad ass, I like the new combat system introduced in Origins but maybe they could let us weaken enemies to a point of vulnerability, similar to in Syndicate, where we can then get a nice multi kill. Also some multi kill assassinations would be sweet too, imagine being able to stab one guard through the neck with an arrow, then bringing your bow up to it, pull it out into the bow and instantly fire it at another guard in the distance, or if theres two guards on a wall next to each other, being able to sneak over with the rope dart equipped and stab the one on your right with the dart, wrap the rope around the guards neck on your left and kick the first one off the wall so when you hold the rope and have your arm around the standing guard, the weight of the other one will choke him to death...I don't know for sure, just some cool looking kills would make it much better for me.

I can't say I'm a big Odyssey fan, but Valhalla better have Odyssey's gear visual system.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 02:39 PM PDT

It was so great being able to make a build completely based on stats, whilst also being able to make it look however I wanted. Valhalla looks great, and I really hope they add this feature.

Assassins Creed Unity had the best visual cloth and material looks from all the games. Eye candy with good feels

I know the game came with bugs but imagine next gen with that muchh ambition to get game items and material to look so physical and real. The outfits looked so sick when customizing

I had no idea that rogue would leave off where unity started.

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:00 PM PDT

So I've been playing the assassins creed games by starting with odyssey then working my way to present day (which probs wasn't the best idea considering this is my first time playing these games). So I just finished killing this dude in rogue as my last mission right, and it was no biggie. You could only imagine the sheer cringe, regret, and surprise on my face when I load up unity and I found out I just assassinated the hell out of Arnos dad. Then he stands there making me feel guilty as hell. It wasn't bad but omg my heart man.

Legendary armor hunt in AC Valhalla would be cool

    Posted: 07 May 2020 10:42 AM PDT

I was going through AC Brotherhood again, after AC II, and I really would like them to bring back those treasure hunt with parkour levels all through the map leading to a final legendary set of armor. Considering the fact they said the loot system had change and each piece of equipment is now unique, it would make sense. I would also like them to do little (or not that little) references to King Arthur and, why not, find his armor or the one of Ragnar Lodbrok. That would be super cool in my opinion. Excalibur would over-do it though. A bit like in AC Unity, when you walked down the streets with the Eden sword, that was a bit odd in my opinion. Anyway, what do you think ?

I'm a black American of creole and Caribbean heritage I really wish there was an assassins creed set in West Africa and the Caribbean that actually follows a black character There so much to explore regarding west African traditions, cultures, kingdoms, the origins of Voodoo, the Atlantic slave trade And so many important historical figures West Africa plays such a large role in history i wish they'd make an assassins creed to reflect that
