Listening to them without the games pulling me away from it really makes me appreciate it a lot more. Honestly some of the best videogame soundtracks I've ever heard.

Why an AC1 remake is more likely in 2021 than ever

    Posted: 15 May 2020 02:11 PM PDT

Yes, yes, it's another AC1 post, but bear with me. A remake of the original Assassin's Creed is a topic that has been discussed here to death in the last 5 or so years and for good reason. It's Assassin's Creed at its purest, and after Odyssey we are dying for a return to the Assassins-Templar conflict that set this whole thing off. It's the one AC game that arguably doesn't hold up to scrutiny on gameplay value, but has the most depth in its story and world. Well for the reasons set out below, I think that the next AC game, whether that's in 2021 or 2022 is much more likely than ever to be the remake we've been longing for, or at least a game set in the same era. Why?

The crux of my argument here is the setting. Assassin's Creed 1 is set in 1191, at the height of the Third Crusade where the Muslims and Christians were fighting over the Holy Land. We are very much in the start of the Medieval era and the setting of AC1 puts us at the heart of the key locations in the war: Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus. It's established fact by this point that where we have a new AC title that represents a big chronological shift in setting or era, the choice of setting in an AC game that FOLLOWS that game is influenced massively by that initial new game. This is because reusing assets, engine, environments, animations is the only way Ubisoft was able to keep to an yearly schedule and keep pumping these games out. If each game required the creation of brand new assets from scratch, there's no way they could have been able to keep up. This is why we got ACB which uses tons of assets from 2. Similarly, AC3, AC4 and AC Rogue are clearly built using the same engine, play very similarly and share a ton of assets. Same thing with Unity, the engine, parkour systems and overall gameplay of which is found also in Syndicate, set roughly only a century later. Then we had Odyssey which felt very similar gameplay and setting-wise (arguably too similar) to Origins, with assets very clearly being used throughout the game. In fact, Odyssey initially turned me off because of how similar it felt to Origins. Notice that in all of these shared asset game bundles, the setting jumps from as little as a few years to a maximum of a century or so before or after the initial game (Odyssey/Origins notwithstanding but those can still be bundled together as ancient world games).

With all of this in mind, we can be very certain that Ubi is well underway on the next AC and they're not going to jump to China, Japan, India or some entirely new setting.. Valhalla is set in northern Europe and represents one of these big chronological jumps and so it stands to reason that the next AC game will be based on the assets, engine, gameplay elements and environments built for ACV, set within at max within a few centuries of 873 AD. Based on the assets they would be building for England, it makes more sense for them to go forward rather than backwards. In ACV, we'll also be doing a lot of raiding and conquering of territory both on land and through the sea. A game set in the Third Crusade could utilize these gameplay elements perfectly. Now we know Altair didn't fight in huge battles, aside from the Battle of Asruf, but we could perhaps follow another Assassin in this era who did, allowing us to fight in the battles of the Crusades to conquer territory in the Holy Land, which changed hands a lot in the span of decades. Maybe it could be a more fleshed out version of AC1, where much like Evie or Aya , we could follow other characters who are more involved in the Crusade.

The game map could include most of the Holy Land and all of its cities and towns, extending from the edge of Egypt, across Palentine and Syria to the edge of Turkey, allowing us to visit all of the towns and settlements in between. We could have battles over this territory a la Odyssey and actually sync these with the story of the Third Crusade. The battles from ACOd/ACV would fit in perfectly here, and the open worlds of modern AC would let us explore the whole region and all of the key locations. Remember Kingdom, the map of AC1 where we have to travel through country to Masyaf? A remake would allow that journey just to be part of the bigger world. The weaponry, building assets, open fields, mountains and valleys, a lot of that from ACV could be used here.

Another reason this might happen is that even though ACV is set a few hundred years prior to the Crusades, we know the Vikings and Muslims had contact and traded extensively. They keep finding tons of artifacts in Viking regions that are from the Arabs and there's a theory there may even have been limited cultural exchange. Hence I think there's also a chance that in the game, we could see the proto-Assassins connect to Eivor, potentially setting up a story seed that could be followed up in a fuller remake of AC1. We see the Hidden Ones that become the Levantine Assassins show up in some form and carry forward that story.

It might also make sense for an AC1 remake to release as the next game because it's going to be the first Assassin's Creed game on the new generation of consoles. We know from Unity that Ubisoft likes to be ambitious and really do something big as their first entry for the new consoles. What better way would there to be to set the tone for the franchise going forward than to go back to the roots of the Assassin-Templar conflict? If what we're hoping for is correct and Darby ends the Layla story in ACV, the next game could let us follow a new character in the modern day that reintroduces AC to a new generation, based on its roots and main principles. With how dishevelled the state of the lore is, I wouldn't even mind a full reboot with Desmond to be honest. In my mind, a game like this would take the best of the new AC formula and combine it with the gameplay roots of the franchise, keeping things like the fully explorable open world, the gears and weapons, the combat and general gameplay of new AC while at the same time focusing more on making cities feel like cities, emphasis on parkour and stealth and assassination. It could be a culmination of everything.

Bonus: Now this one is a longshot but Darby gave us a 'secret code' to decode on Twitter. This could just be Darby teasing us with complete nonsense, but the two 'dates' there correspond with the start of the Third and Sixth Crusades respectively. Could be something, could be nothing.

Now I'm not saying all of this points strongly to an AC1 remake, but that it would make a lot of sense based on where the series is now. I think even if it's NOT AC1, it could be a game set in or around the Crusades (e.g. an Assassin's Creed: Holy Land) or the near Medieval age. Alternatively, if Ubisoft wants to go all-in on the Medieval age, we may see re-use of assets for the Black Plague game Ubi teased in its surveys. Either way, I think this is the direction we're headed in.

Potential Hot Take: I like Conner Kenway more than Desmond

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:15 PM PDT

The PStore Spring Sale had most of the Assassin's Creed series on deep discount. I haven't played since AC2 & now I'm working my way through the entire series available on the PS4. I just finished Black Flag & in the hacking side missions there is a nod to the community dislike of Conner. I actually really like Connor. I like his stoicism but also his flashes of high emotion. I really enjoyed Connor's interaction with Haytham. But I've come to HATE Desmond. I'm so happy he's gone.

Who's your guilty pleasure? If you like Desmond why is that? Maybe I'm missing something about Desmond.

Bought AC Odyssey on sale couple weeks ago, first AC game I've ever played.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 04:01 AM PDT

It was actually one of the best open world RPG's I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing, but god damn, I wasn't ready for the feels train. I played as Kassandra and got the "worst ending", and then played Legacy of the First Blade immediately afterwards and it fucking broke me. I haven't shed a tear at a game in a long time but this one definitely took me on a feels trip I did not ask for. I haven't played Fate of Atlantis yet but I really hope poor Kass gets at least some happiness to end that.

    11/10 would cry again.

Is Origins anything like Odyssey? Been considering getting that as well since it's on sale, just not sure I can handle another heart crushing storyline right now.

Origins and Odyssey have no level design

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:21 AM PDT

So I was thinking again why I prefer the old games over the new ones and I think one of the major reasons is that these games have just no level design.

What I mean is that the missions and locations weren't handcrafted with the gameplay in mind. Instead they crafted a gameplay loop revolving around killing enemies and then pretty much just stuffed the world full of enemies.
Granted, this is not that untypical for RPGs. After all while in other games the diversity in gameplay comes from the varied mission design and locations, in RPG's it's supposed to be the varied weapons and playstyles. And with detailed level design you of course are telling the player how to play which goes against the principle of RPGs.

Nevertheless I prefer the old games cause every mission felt unique. The Black box levels were crafted like a Hitman game where every route and guard placement is carefully considered to achieve optimal balance.
And every mission had some unique gameplay twist or objective to it. You were never in "generic fort nr 234".

In Orgiins you still had at least some level design. I remember that mission where you had to identify your target among many who looked the same. But most of the side missions was just "kill random enemies and listen to dialogue in between".

I hope in Valhalla they bring some of that back with unique and varied missions and locations crafted with the gameplay (especially parkour) in mind.

A game set during the War of 1812

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:28 AM PDT

Think about it you'd get Old Connor, Old Shay, Shay's son and have Arno who is in the Napoleonic wars overseas involved as well.

Shay would be a Fossil at 80 years old but maybe the Templars know some secrets that allow him to be in good health. He'd also be a master Templar and leader of his own Chapter of Templars. His son will be the one out in the field doing a lot of the fighting and who you'd have many battles and encounters with.

Connor would be older and wiser. He'd be a grumpy old man much like Achilles living at the Davenport homestead by himself until the war shows up at his doorstep and our new protagonist after trying very hard forces him back into action.

We'd get to see the Battle of Bladensburg and Washington DC destroyed with the White House getting burned downed by the British. I'm a bit biased because I'm from the area and want to see it in an AC game. The Battle of New Orleans would also be cool. We'd also get to visit Canada.

It's not the most attractive setting but this would also be the perfect way to have closure for Connor, Arno, and Shay's stories.

My opinion about the absence of proper Eagle vision in the last games of the series

    Posted: 16 May 2020 12:09 AM PDT

It's just a way I found to make it "canon":

Basically in the other games we can use the eagle vision non only because the ancestors had this ability, but also because the person experiencing the modern day has it as well (Desmond).

The two Abstergo's workers from AC4 and Rogue and the Initiates from ACU and ACS instead can use the eagle vision because the genetic memories they're living come from blood of subjects that, like their ancestors, had the Eagle vision ability.

In Origins and Odyssey we can't use the Eagle vision not because Bayek and Kassandra didn't have this ability, but because it's Layla that doesn't have it (also the genetic samples used from her for her animus are pieces of dry tissues, not blood, as for the other animi).

P.s. Also sorry for my bad english... I'm italian

I have so much confidence in Ashraf AIsmail. I would be fine having a 3 year cycle with him as the lead.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:49 PM PDT

Between BF, Origins, and all I'm hearing on Valhalla, I cant hello but ooze excitement over the new AC.

He has constantly revolutionized the game each turn he gets with Pirates/Ships, RPG elements, Bringing classic AC elements back to Valhalla.

The news of one hit kills, social stealth, settlement, etc has me so excited.

He just seems to "get it" and understands what the AC fans want.

I know not everyone is a fan of the RPG route. Nonetheless, I'd very much love to give him the reins of a 3 yr dev cycle where he controls the direction of the franchise.

What to do after mastering Assassin's Creed

    Posted: 15 May 2020 04:05 PM PDT

So I have beaten and almost 100% all of the Assassin's Creed games, excluding the DS/psp/ whatever exclusives. I am still intrigued into the series so I need more to do before Valhalla. Should I make an entire document online that contains every known Assassin's Creed lore ever? Should I create a hidden blade? Should I start a cult inspired by Assassin's Creed?

Who has the better tracking skills / who is the better hunter, Connor or Arno?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 02:49 PM PDT

So I've replayed all of Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered and Assassin's Creed Unity during this time in quarantine (I know not many like these two games, but for me, personally, these are honestly my favorite ones after AC2. If you don't like them, that's perfectly fine) and I can't help but notice that both Arno and Connor do quite a bit of hunting throughout their games.

Connor's a native american who was trained to hunt animals since he was a little boy. He can spot the faintest of tracks in the snow, and applies the same techniques to find people too. He has an eye for detail and recognizes various marks left by animals, to determine what animal it is and which way it went. And, again, he's shown to apply these tactics when having to hunt down people too (like when he and Haytham were tracking down Benjamin Church and found the stranded mercenary). However he is a bit too straight forward, just barging into places demanding "Where's [Person's name]?" like he's Batman, regardless of where he is. He also tracked down Captain Kidd's treasure based on indications from Kidd's letters and then based on the descriptions from each piece of the puzzle. In short, riddles.

Arno shows a bit of a detective mind, with a keen eye for detail, able to spot the slightest opportunity before going in on a mission. Not to mention that, if I'm not mistaken, Arno's Eagle Vision is the only one that actually sees through walls too, even if you can't hold it out indefinitely like everyone else's (I don't remember if Jacob and Evie's can see through walls too, I haven't played Syndicate in years). Now of course I know that's probably just a game mechanic, but would it be far fetched to say that Arno's Eagle Vision is in fact more evolved than Connor's or Ezio's? Arno also single handedly solved multiple murder cases throughout Paris, finding the culprits and putting them behind bars (now, of course, the efficiency depends on the player, we can't really just assume that Arno did in fact find every culprit without a single false accusation, so this one's kinda up for debate). And just a lot of Unity's elements revolve around mysteries, and finding clues to solve them. Murder Cases, the Saturnus Nostradamus Enigma, etc. And if Arno did in fact canonically solve all of these on his own, that's honestly quite impressive. I mean yeah Ezio found everything he needed to get the Armor of Altair, the Armor of Brutus and the Armor of Ishak Pasha, but that was mainly just "Go to said tomb, pass through it, get piece.", and most tomb location were always marked at a certain point in the story, as if Ezio knew beforehand where they are (I don't remember exactly, was it the Codex Pages that told him where to go, or...?) whereas for Arno he had to actually follow clues and descriptions and deduce where to find what he needed. In short, riddles again.

But with all that in mind, I can't help but wonder. Who's the better hunter? Arno or Connor? Now of course most people will probably jump right in and say Connor off the start, but, like I mentioned just earlier, Arno had quite a few skills at his disposal and was pretty good at analyzing clues and all that.

So let's make this a hypothetical confrontation between the two. Not a typical "beatdown" or anything, no, more like a race. Who would solve a murder case first?

Let's say that Connor and Arno are both in Florence, Italy. Picking Florence so that it's not an environment familiar to either of them, to make things fair so that neither one has a familiar environment that they already know the inns and outs of while the other doesn't. Putting them in a place unfamiliar to either of them can really test their skills since they can't rely on knowing the area to gain any advantages. So they're both tasked to solve a murder, hunt down the murderer and kill him. But, instead of working together on this, they decide to have a little competition, and they split up to see who can solve the case first. Both in a place they've never been before, having equal chances, using all the skills at their disposal. Who succeeds first?

    --

TL;DR : Arno and Connor are both in an unfamiliar city and have to solve a murder. Who solves it first? Who can hunt down the murderer first? Connor or Arno?

What I think the assassins will be called in Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:15 PM PDT

I have been listening to an audio book called The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell which has now been adapted into a series on Netflix. It is set during the reign of Alfred the Great, which is when Assassin's Creed Valhalla is set, and one of the subplots is that the main protagonist wishes to be an Anglo-Saxon mythical creature called Sceadugengan or commonly referred to as a 'Shadow-Walker, Dark-Walker or Shadow-goer'.

The Sceadugengan were neither alive or dead, they lived in the forests of England and they would be able to shape shift and blend in within their environment.

Now being a big fan of the Assassin's Creed franchise, I automatically made the connection between the Sceadugengan and the assassins. At the moment, I don't know what the assassins will be called in Valhalla but I thought it would be a cool theory to suggest that the assassins will be called the Sceadugengan or the Shadow-Walkers. I know it is a long shot but what do you think?

AC without loading is going to be so amazing

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:08 AM PDT

AC is one the franchises that will benefit the most from the elimination of load times next gen. I've gone back to do some unfinished business in Odyssey and there is a lot of friction, as Ash would put it. A typical session goes like this:

    • Starting up the game (loooong loading).
    • Fast travel close to some quest (loading).
    • Calling the Adrestia (loading). Sail to the correct location.
    • Talk to the quest giver (loading).
    • etc.

So much downtime. Ikaros is an amazing feat, but he doesn't work as smoothly as he could. There are hiccups and mini-loadings all the time.

Imagine all this loading being gone forever. Playing AC on next gen is going to be oh so sweet!

Do you agree? I feel I really wanna jump to next-gen early because of this. Playing Valhalla on current gen is kind of a waste.

History Spoilers: Speculating some events and people that we might see in ACV

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:46 PM PDT

To start, I didn't include every event and I can feel that I am missing some stuff so please let me know.

--Notable events involving Vikings and England (and a little bit of Scotland and Iceland) just prior to the game's start (873 AD)

865 - Great Heathen Army in England. Led by Ivar the Boneless, Halfdan, and Guthrum

867 - Ragnar dies (I personally don't believe he existed but this was the year on Google)

869 - Killed King Edmund and conquered East Anglia

870 - Dublin Vikings take Strathclyde

    870 - Vikings settle Iceland

870s - Great Summer Army in Wessex (this was the Guthrum portion of the "Great Heathen Army" which split from Halfdan)

870s - Ivar the Boneless/Imar active in Northumbria and Ireland (died in 873)

    871 - Alfred becomes king

    ---- Start of Game 873 ---

874 - Vikings conquer Mercia and exile King Burgred. They install a man named Ceolwulf

874ish - The Great Heathen Army splits and Halfdan brings half the army to Northumbria to pillage

874 - Led by the vikings Guthrum, Oscetel, and Anwend the Great Summer Army left Repton in 874 and went to Cambridge.

875 - Great Summer Army attacks Wessex

875-76 - Northumbria conquered and settled

Jan 878 - Guthrum invades Wessex again

May 878 - Guthrum is defeated at the The Battle of Edington, agrees to become a Christian (now called Æthelstan). The Danelaw is formalized with the Treaty of Wedmore.

878 - Potentially deterred by The Battle of Edington, a third great army, "The Great Danish Army" leaves England to pillage the Continent instead.

880s - The Great Danish Army enriches themselves on the treasures of the Continent.

886 - Restoration and occupation of London by Alfred

    890 - Guthrum/Æthelstan dies

892 - The Great Danish Army lands at Appledore (Kent) with 250 ships, smaller viking force lands at Milton (Kent) with 80 ships.

I don't think the game will go into the 90s

899 - Alfred the Great dies

900 - Vikings expelled from Dublin

    911 - Rollo gets Normandy

919 - Ragnald, son of Ivar the Boneless takes York

Alfred was good friends with Pope Marinus (882-884), maybe Marinus was a Templar villain?? Maybe too similar to the Ezio games though, Pope baddie could be a retread.

    ASSASSIN'S CREED ALL PROTAGONISTS' HEIGHTS

    Posted: 15 May 2020 02:10 AM PDT

So, i don't seem to find a lot of info on this subject, so trough lots of research and a bit of speculation, here is what i think all of the protagonist's heights are. Only main games

Desmond, Altair and Ezio are all 1.83. Connor is the tallest at around 1.87. Edward is 1.78. Shay is 1.80. Arno is 1.71(a bit taller than napoleon). Evie and Jacob are between 1.68 and 1.72 (my guess is 1.70. Bayek is 1.73 (a lot of npc are taller than him). Kassandra and Alexios seem to be taller than most npc. I'd say both are 1.85.

What do you say? I want to hear your opinions as well
