Apparently 15 studios working on new Assassin's creed, keep in mind odyssey only has 7 studios, the new game is going to be epic

I really hope we won't have a Alexios/Kassandra situation for the next game

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:08 AM PDT

Female or male protag, I don't really care as long it's a good character. But having the choice in odyssey made the character just lacking in a lot of things. And kassandra almost felt like she was made late in dev yet was made Canon. (I remember some characters calling me Alexios as Kassandra or some text still saying Alexios when playing)

In my view. Choices in general should not exist in AC. But the choice of the protag just hurt the character.

[SPOILERS] A Comprehensive Analysis of the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Reveal Art

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 08:01 PM PDT

Earlier today we had an 8 hour Livestream that revealed the next game would be known as Valhalla. There's a lot of speculation and analyses going around about specific parts of this, and I wanted to add my two cents. Potential Spoilers for the game are below (as with a reference to the Last Descendants books)

If anyone doesn't have the image, the final version is here: https://i.redd.it/4lsdavbmwtv41.jpg

A couple of big things pop up immediately such as obvious Norse and Viking inspiration for the character design, use of furs and silks (accurate) nice hair braiding, and even war paint and tattoos which has been described by multiple sources as being accurate. On the ax we have the new assassin symbol which looks nice. The Hidden Blade is shown on the left arm but worn on top like Darius rather than underneath like Bayek. Maybe the Viking Assassins aren't related to the hidden ones, or there's another reason. To the left, we see a few Viking longships, a raven, and some mountains, while the right has an obvious raid or battle beneath a castle.

The mountains on the left appear to be Norway due to how tall and rugged they are, and Norway is a higher and more rugged country than Sweden. That said we do see the Aurora Borealis above these mountains, and while this can be occasionally seen as far south as England and Denmark, is more commonly visible in northern parts of Norway, Sweden, and Finland, specifically north of Trondheim (the location of a vault in AC). This implies that a large amount of Scandinavia will be shown, not just the more populated southern areas.

Moving to the right the next thing I want to point out are the Viking sails, which use the raven. The Raven is a symbol associated with Odin (the assassins are associated with Odin as well in Last Descendants calling eagle vision "Odin Sight"), however, this was a popular flag to use on raids and was cited to have been seen during the Great Heathen Army's invasion of England by Ragnar's sons (865-879), Cnut the Great (1017), and Harald Hadrada (1066). Dragon heads are also seen on the longship, which was a fairly common animal head used to inspire fear, though we also see a dragon on the broach of the main character, which was commonly used to symbolize destruction, evil, and chaos.

We do see a few women in the image on the left and right and there have been mixed reactions to this saying it's accurate or not. There were many stories of Shield Maidens from the sagas, but these were largely written after the end of the Viking era by Christians. While not a direct source, I don't feel this actively harms the argument for shield maidens. Medieval Christianity was very patriarchal and used as a tool to oppress in some instances, so the fact that Christians were writing that women were performing heroic acts makes me think it wasn't just a falsification. There's also some evidence in burial mounds and sites throughout Europe that men and women were buried together at battles and in graves and done so in a similar manner. Furthermore, women had been largely cited to have the most freedoms of any pre-modern era under the Anglo Saxons and Norse, being able to own land and get divorced for instance. All this in mind, I don't think it'd be unlikely for Ubisoft to include female warriors, nor does it seem out of place for the period, even if it may not have been true.

In the battle we see a typical female Norse raider carrying an ax, shield, and a sword at her hip. Nothing really stands out here. The man next to her is stabbing with a spear of some sort (though it looks fine for the entirety of the Viking era) wearing chain mail, and a red cloak or cape. While the cape may be a little anachronistic for the battlefield, it wasn't uncommon for Saxon men to wear, and the chain mail was the common armor type in the early medieval period, as post Romans people forgot how to make plate armor. The flag above him appears to be a stylized White Wessex Dragon on a red background; Wessex of course being one of the dominant kingdoms of England among the heptarchy and served as the foundation for a unified England. This flag was first used in 450ce during the initial Anglo-Saxon invasions of England and was used by Alfred at the Battle of Edington (878), Aethelstan at the Battle of Brunanburh (937), and Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Stamford Bridge and the Battle of Hastings (1066).

The steep hill on the right implies that, with this being England, we're probably in Northumbria as southern England was far less mountainous and Hilly than northern England, and at the time had very large swamps and low lying land. With this in mind, one possible flag or shield we see in the background has a black cross with a white or yellow outline on a red background. The closest to this I found was the flag of Durham which has a black background, yellow/white outline, and red cross. Durham was officially founded in 995ce after the body of a saint from Lindisfarne was brought through which made the ground holy, but this implies there may have been a settlement there already, and the city name has potential Norse roots. There is a castle in Durham as well (that looks somewhat similar) but was built in 1072, 6 years after the Norman Conquest.

Discussing the castle for a moment, as others have pointed out this castle is far too sophisticated for the time. This is what's known as a Stone Keep castle, where the main castle is a single keep or building made of stone, and usually has a single wall surrounding it. The first Stone Keep in England was the Tower of London, built-in 1067 under William the Conqueror, a year after the end of the Viking era. Even then, Normans traditionally surrounded the entire keep as well, whereas this castle has the keep in the wall/ battlement, which is less secure. It also appears the castle may have machicolations, which is where the crenelated walls are jettied out from the side of a castle or battlement so that there's a hole. This allows defenders to shoot arrows both through the crenelations and directly below them while making the wall harder to scale. This design appears to have become popular around the 13th century, though.

Looking deeper into the castle, during the Livestream we briefly get a look at a number of resources and files used to make this.

    https://www.twitch.tv/videos/605983734

If you go there to 13:38 you can see the artist open up a folder to look at reference images. The first folder they look at is called Cambodia, and the second is called castles. The Cambodia images are clearly from a walkthrough for a scouting group. AC Asia soon(tm)? So there are several unknown Castle images because they're actual photographs from a camera or a phone. The ones we do see are:

    1. Eileen Donan - A castle built in Scotland on the lochs in the 13th century with settlement from the 6th century. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eilean_Donan)
    2. Kwidzyn Castle - Built in the 14th century Poland for the Knights Templars (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwidzyn_Castle)
    3. Chateau de Chambord - a French Mansion built in the 16th century (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Chambord)
    4. Fort Wadsworth - an abandoned fort on Staten Island, New York built in the 17th century (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Wadsworth
    5. And Hogwarts from Harry fucking Potter (Commonly assumed to be in Scotland)
    6. There's also examples of "Neo-Gothic" Architecture, and gothic architecture became popular in France in the 13th century

With that all in mind, it's clear that Ubisoft is taking some historical liberties with their world design, and the existence of a castle I don't think is going to prove a certain year or period. Furthermore, some potentially leaked concept art from a few years ago ( https://trendingnewsbuzz.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/assassins-creed-vikings-scaled.jpg ) shows a verify fantasy styled Viking Village in the background - which is also in line with For Honor's viking Village - shows that Ubisoft may be leaning towards some anachronistic designs and fantastical styles to better suit gameplay. The other castles used as resources may also indicate that they're looking at other locations than just Scandinavia and the British Isles, as some leaks have suggested that Frankia, the Holy Roman Empire, Poland, and Kievan Rus would be in the game, and that might make sense as to why Polish and French castles were being used as potential source material.

Then there's also this tweet, which to me implies that this is the first real invasion of England by the Norse, which implies Ragnar's sons and the Great Heathen Army as the focus. https://twitter.com/UbisoftANZ/status/1255542836285456384?s=19

For those who can't see this, it says "They're landing, and they came to conquer a new land."

For any unaware, the invasion by the Great Army occured between 865 and 879 and ended after the Battle of Edington where Alfred led a decisive comeback victory against Guthrum which lead to Guthrum negotiating for peace, being baptized as a christian, and founding of the Danelaw in England. This also follows up with the potential achievement leak a few weeks ago which implied it took place during the Great Heathen Army and had a setting of Scandinavia, British Isles, France, Holy Roman Empire, Poland, and Kievan Rus. This was also the only leak I know of to accurately say the name was "Assassin's Creed Valhalla". Image is here, please be aware of potential spoilers: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/357184237230882817/694775378434064404/SPOILER_bNINQCQ.png

Lastly, while not part of this image, Darby McDevitt, and Ashraf Ismail having been hinting on twitter they're involved, if not outright saying it. Darby was the lead writer for Revelations and Ac4 and is now Narrative Director. Ashraf was the game director for AC4 and Origins and is now Creative Director. There will be a full trailer released in about 12 hours at 8 am Pacific time, and I'll be sure to make a new post with a full breakdown in similar detail for what we see there as well.

EDIT: Added relevant information about about the "ragnarok" concept art showing a viking village

    EDIT 2:

Upon closer inspection of the lips thanks to a helpful comment by u/AssassinMentorX we can see what appears to be a few scars in the shape of runes.

    • The first on the left appears to be Sowulo which is the Sun, Thunderbolt, and honor.
    • The Second in the middle appears to be Raido which is a horse, ride, journey, and Thor.
    • The third and last on the right appears to be Hagalaz which is hail, storm, and air.

    Bring back the assassination cutscenes

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 08:27 PM PDT

From AC1 all the way through Origins, when we kill an important character in the story we see an intimate cutscene with this dying character saying their last words to their assassin, surrounded by nothing but the "animus loading" background, or the pure blackness in Origins. This was one of the things that kept reminding me I'm playing an Assassin's Creed game, more so than hoodies and hidden blades. That reoccurring, captivating exchange of words between assassin and the target surrounded by nothingness.

Anyone else miss these and have any favorite cutscenes to share?

Unity did change this up by instead giving cutscenes that reveal how that target was involved in the plot, but I found it to be a welcomed one-time change.

Being that Odyssey has 40+ cult members, I didn't expect to see this with all of them but at least with the Sages, to me that was a missed opportunity. All we get is a "Cultist Defeated" thrown up on the screen.

Hopefully this small but significant piece of the series makes a return in the future.

I hope there is at least one dense city similar to Paris.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:00 AM PDT

Obviously not as big as paris but no ac city has felt more fun to explore and run around than paris. There was just this palpable nature to it where it felt so satisfying to run around on its rooftops and dense crowds. I hope at least one city in the next game is at least half as good as paris. It really goes a long way to make you feel like an active part of the historical setting and ground you into the game.

[AC Odyssey] I have collected all cultist bodies in one place for an EPIC family photo!

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 04:03 AM PDT

Some time ago I made a post about how cultist bodies do not de-spawn.

After that post I decided to play NG+ (cause I love the game), and during my gameplay I collected every single body I could and brought them all to a single place.

    Here it is!

    The Cultist family!

I tried to arrange them all just like in the cultist menu (thats me in the middle!)

However, as you can clearly see, not all bodies are collectable. These are the people I was not able to get and this is why:

GODS OF THE AEGEAN SEA: Unfortunately, even if you board cultist ships, kill them and kidnapp them (as I did to all of them), their bodies de-spawn.

    THE SILVER VEIN

Epiktetos the Forthcoming: This is the guy that Deimos bashed in the cultist gathering. He does not leave a body.

    DELIAN LEAGUE

Iobates the Stoic and Kodros the Bull: These 2 guys are standart state leaders, and state leaders de-spawn, unfortunately.

    PELLOPONESIAN LEAGUE

Silanos of Paros: He was a ship captain. Same treatment as Gods of the Aegean Sea I guess.

The Monger: This guy does not leave a body. Even if he did I doubt kassandra could move it, since hes massive.

    Skylax the Fair: State leader.

    WORSHIPPERS OF THE BLOODLINE

Diona: I was very confused about this one, I brought her to a port, called Adrestia, and she was gone. Her body dissapears as soon as you get some distance from it. I dont understand it myself.

    HEROES OF THE CULT

Belos the Beast of Sparta: He is an arena hero. Arena heroes do not leave bodies.

Swordfish: This guy left a body, and he does not dissapear. Unfortunately, you face him in a cave that can only be entered trough an underwater tunnel. It is impossible to get his body out of that cave.

Exekias the Legend: He is a mercenary, and unfortunately, mercenary bodies dissapear.

Ghost of Cosmos: As soon as you kill her in the cultist room, cutscene starts and you are spawned outside the temple afterwards.

Interesting notes: My guess was that the cultists that do not de-spawn are the ones that need a kill confirmation and are not basic characters (state leaders, ship captains, mercenaries), however, Pallas the Silencer also does not need a kill confirmation (you kill him in a conquest battle), but after the battle I was able to find his body in the battlefield. He was the only body I could move!

Podarkes the Cruel: Not only was this guy a state leader, his body was also "Cremated" by Kyra in a cutscene. Despite this, I still found him in the tavern I killed him in.

Lagos the Archon: I was worried about him from the start for 2 reasons. In my first playtrhough I killed him in a safehouse (I killed Monger in the theatre), and you cant get his body out of safehouse). Also, I wanted to get the evidence on Pausinas, so I wanted to spare him. As soon as I got the mission, I tested if his body dissapears or not by killing him outright, and found out it does not. I still decided to spare him, but I found something interesting afterrwards. Despite him being defeated, I could mark him in the cultist menu, even if he was no longer a cultist or a state leader. I found him in a camp and killed him (this also upgraded my Spartan Hero Belt, I had the belt cause I am playing a NG+, but "Defeating him" did not upgrade the belt, only gave me an artifact piece. I had to kill confirm him too). Thanks to this loophole I was able to both get his body and keep Brasidas happy and Pausinas convicted!

Now I will move on to Legacy of the First Blade. If the ancients also do not dissapear, they will join the cult on the hippodrome floor! This was fun!

EDIT: If anyone wants a save file to play with the bodies or check to see if im lying, im happy to share a save file :)

Origins should have ended with Bayek and Aya's farewell on the beach

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 08:13 AM PDT

They should've done a second game with Aya in Rome as the protagonist. They could have given Bayek side missions like Aya had in Origins. It would have been awesome to get a full game of them setting up the order in those cities.

Obviously the fans have wanted ancient Rome for ages so I'm surprised they didn't do something like this.

People talking about shield maidens in comments on twitch

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:53 AM PDT

This serves not to justify those complaining about a women in the trailer, women in the game are cool and awesome in the game I don't mind the idea to choose character even if that leads to minor story issues. That being said the amount of people saying shield maidens existed as a defense to the argument is like a person who had never watched football trying to teach the game.

Starting off, as a history major with a focus in viking and medieval Norse studies, we don't know if shield maidens existed. We have reference in saga's such as Hervor's, but sagas are largely mythological and them being included within them do not prove they existed in reality. The only real evidence we have is from Saxo Grammaticus who talked about women in Denmark who trained like soldiers and had their attitudes more keen forward conflict than love. That was written in the 12th century, Viking age ended in 1066, and he was a Christian outsider who most likely imposed his own biases on the account. Now their are many female burials where they have weapons like axes, spears, and arrows. So to conclude did individual women who fought in battle in the Viking age exist, most likely, shield maidens in communities who would fight, we don't know.

I get some of you don't care but it's annoying when people who know nothing of the history to to claim a romanticized version from tv as the truth in their arguments. I'm fine with them being in the game I love assassins creed even with all it's issues. But please for the love of god do research before you claim things you have no knowledge of. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

Camera Angle leading to how the scale of the world is perceived in AC

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:08 PM PDT

In the last two Assassin's Creed games, but more specifically Odyssey, the camera likes to pan out while traversing the world and it really affects how the world is perceived. Odyssey has some of the biggest structures in the series, but their scale is lost and feel like toy models sometimes due to the camera panning out, instead of remaining behind the main character. In previous games, the camera remained attached to the player, so when running around, the worlds truly felt huge, and walking around and exploring really felt somewhat personal and up close. Now it feels like a drone trailing behind.

When climbing, the new games like to pan out to and show the scale of what you are climbing, and that isn't what I'm referring to as being the issue. The issue is when you are running around the city, the camera moves back and then everyone just looks like toy models in this diorama.

Even though Black Flag had smaller cities, Havana can feel bigger than Athens just because of the camera angle, and thus I felt more attached to the character I was playing as. An option to have a "legacy" camera angle would be great!

The new AC comabt should heavily focus on actually being an Assassin

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:25 PM PDT

The general consensus on this sub, from what I've read, is that the old mechanics were too clunky, but the new mechanics are too distant from the original playstyle.

I think that it should be nearly impossible to take on more than 2/3 people at the same time, forcing the player to scope out the landscape to decide the best plan of action. This would reduce the issue of the new games essentially making you a God, able to easily kill tens of enemies whilst they're all attacking you.

I think 1 hit assassinations should return, but the AI should be much smarter so theres actually a challenge, opposed to stabbing someone and climbing onto the roof over and over.

Eg theres a chance that you don't fully kill someone, so when they are found they can tell the other enemies where you went before they finally die.

Recently picked Odyssey up after having a few years away from the franchise.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:02 AM PDT

OK, so i may get some stick for what I'm about to say.

Recently picked up AC Odyssey after a few years, (Syndicate was the last one i played).

Firstly, this game is REALLY good! i'm enjoying most aspects of the game, especially the visuals.

The last RPG i played was The Witcher 3 around 4 months ago and i can't help but notice the similarities between the two. I'd like to think the creators took inspiration from elements that made TW3 good. Either way, I like how the AC franchise has evolved to this point.

That's all i wanted to say.

    Peace.

Most of you are brutal towards Origins and Odyssey (Apologies for a giant blabbering ahead)

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 05:59 PM PDT

First of all, let's be clear this is just my opinion.

I love these games! I've taken to downloading every single one that I can while in lockdown. My collection goes from AC2, AC Brotherhood, AC Revelations, AC Black Flag, AC3, AC Rogue, AC Unity, AC Syndicate, AC Origins and AC Odyssey. I really love them all, they are all unique, interesting and challenging.

But, some people really rip on Origins and Odyssey because of the direction that was taken re: gameplay and style. I just don't agree. There is so much texture in Origins and Odyssey. But lets look at the obvious comments for hating them.

    1. They are open world games, they take a different path from traditional AC games etc etc.Sure, they do, but if you're going to ancient Egypt and you get a few small square kilometers of area to run around in, or a whole bunch of jump screens from city to city - you'd be disappointed! You miss out on the texture that is Egypt... I mean, Giza? All those amazing sites - that was thrilling and truly incredible.
    2. The gameplay, the fighting was all wrong.Sure, it wasn't hand to hand combat - but I can't be. It's what 49BCE - its swords and shields and headbutting and slashing. It had to be that way. There was far too much to miss out on, had it been a traditional AC game. In my humble opinion.

Now Odyssey was the same. I see the same hate for the gameplay and fighting style. Again, you would miss out on so much of the texture of the game and where it was set if you limited it to a small section of place and time. It was trying to be a little more historically leaning, rather than this well-printed Assassin overlay that is fighting and hiding. And that to me, is ok. Because it gives you that option to just let loose on crazy weapons, before that Assassin's style is added in with more regulation of actions.

If you think to Rogue, all that land that you see as you sail around is nothing really. There are these small ports here and there, and that's it. It kind of wasted. But the idea behind that game was to be more concentrated in the storyline and be specific.

I'm not going to go and compare every game and their pro's and con's but I just wanted to highlight my points a little. I really enjoy having some mindless fighting in Origins and Odyssey to break up the compact style that some AC games can be. I also think that as gamers, your mind wanders to the idea of 'what if'. What if Connor could use shields, and what if Ezio could carry 40 different swords. It's just fun to indulge in the bigger gaming style.

Anyway. Rant over. Am going to smash out some Origins later and go through The Curse of the Pharaohs.

    Peace
