Ubisoft needs to go back to making real assassins creed games

In my personal opinion, Ubisoft needs to go back to making games like ac unity and the ones before, odyssey and origins feel nothing like ac, they feel like the Witcher 3 rip offs, ac unity is a great game despite the bugs, hell it even looks better than odyssey and it's a 5 year old game

I found something interesting while replaying AC Rogue

If you use berserk grenade near a dog, it will go mad and attack NPCs. Don't know if this is common knowledge, found it interesting

"Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a good game if you don't think about it being AC"

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:08 PM PST

I see a lot of people make this argument, and I wanted to talk about it. (Potential Spoilers) (Tl;dr at the end)

Why is Odyssey a good standalone game exactly? Let's look at it from every aspect. I won't talk about the DLCs or the Modern Day, because the modern day of AC died with Desmond.

    Story:

The story of the game begun as intriguing. The whole Elpenor plot, finding the protagonist's mother, father, discovering Deimos was quite interesting and made me want to keep playing to find out about it. But that's all there is. The story didn't go anywhere and was very predictable. Seeing a 150 year old Pythagoras in front of the gates to atlantis was just hilarious because of how ridiculous it is. Pythagoras, as established in the Da Vinci disappearance, was indeed aware of the first civ, and had found the coordinates for the grand temple. He wouldn't have to live for decades in a first civ temple to do that, since studying the apple could give him information about the future, like it did to Altair, Ezio, Leonardo and Desmond. The way Pythagoras was made was dumb. In conclusion, the story was very simple with little depth to it, everything was straight forward, and a lot of things were just stupid, like how Myrrine refused to tell Kassandra her father's name solely because they wanted to make the EPIC reveal that it's Pythagoras.

    Protagonist:

I will talk for Kassandra for the sake of convenience, this applies to both.

Kassandra is barely a character. Throughout the game, she has no development because of the dialogue choices. You can make her be good or bad, and that's all there is. Furthermore, your choices dont influence future dialogue, so it is possible to make your character literally schizophrenic. I remember the voice actress literally said that the hardest part in their role was trying not to make Kassandra schizophrenic.

    Side characters:

Some side characters were decent, but most of them were overshadowed by bad animations and poor voice acting. The animations during cutscenes were ridiculous, unrealistic, unecessary and silly. Voice acting had basically NPC level dialogue. Hearing the gang members in grove street in Gta SA was basically similar to a lot of the characters talking.

    Gameplay:

First of all, combat. The superpowers in the game really are a downgrade for an AC experience. And no, it's not because of the Isu artifact or the bloodline, because every mercenary had powers in the game, a lot of npcs had flaming swords and every spartan could use spartan kick. It's like due to the fact that Quebec evidently doesn't understand games, thought that since most successful RPGs have fantasy stuff, odyssey had to be fantasy based, for no good reason. Not only that, but making enemies damage sponges didn't help to the whole thing. The whole combat is tedious and looks ridiculous.

Stealth: Worse than origins. It basically took the flaws of origins and amplified them, while getting rid of the pros in origins. One hit kills from stealth are not a thing most of the time, unless you go for regular soldiers. Critical assassinate is just dumb and it should be the default assassinate. You cant use hiding spots either.

    Parkour:

Basically just having the analog stick forward does it. Everything is climbable, which in some cases can be useful, but then again it takes away the depth to the system. Having no fall damage only adds to it.

    Open World:

The map is a huge area of nothing. There are Caves, Tombs that are no different from one another, and restricted areas where you kill captains and loot chests. That's all there is. PS3 games like the last of us (2014) had better graphics than this, because of how unpolished the game is. The big cities are dead and the NPCs are brainlessly roaming around.

Missions (and side missions since they are indistinguishable)

The structure of them was really uninspired, boring and repetitive. You do the same things you do in the open world as main missions, which is fetching things and assassinating people in forts. People say AC1 is bad because it's repetitive, but Odyssey is arguably more repetitive. In AC1 the assassination missions at least were different to each other.

    Cultist system:

This had some potential to be made good, but those targets were basically pixels on screen. You didn't have any side stories for most of them, you just looted chests until you got one on your map and then stabbed them. Assassination contracts from the Ezio games had the same depth as this very core system of the game. The Mercenary system was basically a worse version of this, so it's not even worth mentioning.

    Naval:

It's just discount Black Flag. That's all there is. It has absolutely nothing better than Black Flag. It's simply a worse version.

How are people defending these things as a "Good rpg" but "Not an AC game"? I havent played RPG games, but if this is what a good rpg looks like , does this mean all RPGs are just trash? I really doubt that since they are so popular.

I really want to see the other prespective from those who like the game. Usually they either refuse to elaborate and just come off as offensive, or they flat out lie about game aspects to make it seem good.

Tl;dr: Interesting at first story that leads to nowhere, bad main character and side characters of same level as GTA citizens, tedious gameplay, unpolished open world, repetitive missions. No depth to anyhing. A lazy made game.

Help me understand how anyone could defend this.

Is there a block feature in AC Odyssey?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:27 PM PST

So I've played AC2 and AC Origins, both of which had a handy blocking mechanic. I've recently started playing Odyssey, and couldn't figure out the block, only parrying and dodging. The button that was used to block in Origins is now special moves. Is there blocking?

[AC Odyssey] Can you play the side quests that become unavailable?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 04:26 PM PST

    Hi!

Sorry if this has been asked, but a quick google search got me no answers.

I'm referring to the quests that throughout the game become unavailable due to either actions or simply advancing through the main story. Can you ever play them or do you have to create another character? By the way, are they needed for any achievement?

About the Latin pronunciation in AC Origins

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:06 AM PST

I love everything about this game and now that I have a great system that can run it smoothly as butter I decided to finally play both Origins and Odyssey. From the locations to the acting and the historical research that went behind it all: I am crazy about it.
But there is a small thing I can't shrug it off, which is the Latin pronunciation of the Roman soldiers. They sound... well, they sound like how other language speakers try to mock the Italian way of speaking (as a "Peppereppeppe" to be clear ) which apart from being completely a stereotype (and doesn't hold ground in any way considering we have dialects that may have prompted this views on our language, but that's not the point) the pronunciation of Latin is also pretty different from modern Italian. The pronunciation in the game is wrong on both the accents and the cadence of the words.

I know, I know, it's a side, small thing, that does not ruin the game, but I just wanted to point it out to all the people that do not know what Ancient Latin sounded like (both the Vulgar Latin, spoke by the common people and the Classical Latin spoke by the highest social class). Don't take the game as proof, because it sounds a bit "Italian Stereotypized". You can find many videos on youtube that will tell you the difference between the various kinds of Latin and how even modern Latin (the ecclesiastic one) also differs from its precursor.

From a chronological and story point of view, how should I tackle high level areas and the final missions of AC Origins?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 12:29 PM PST

I try to do things in the right order to the point where I've mostly kept to area levels below the story missions to try and keep things right. From what I've read though I'm now in the final part of the game and yet almost half the map is unexplored because of level recommendation, which I'm far above. From a story only point of view, should I finish the story before exploring these areas and doing the sidequests there or after? For example, will quests I haven't finished mention events that should've happened before the final mission?

    If only this setting happened

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:19 PM PST

Sorry if this is a repost, but I remember how excited I was for an Asian setting when I first stumbled upon Xu Chaoyuan's work depicting what appears to be a Japan-based AC game.
    https://www.neogaf.com/threads/incredible-assassins-creed-fan-art-makes-me-hope-the-next-entry-goes-to-china.507024/

Ubisoft unfortunately all but admitted they would never do this, not sure why, but it seems Suckerpunch wants to do it for them.

Thoughts on this sort of setting and differentiating it from becoming just another "ninja" game (not that we have an abundance of those).

Unable to beat naval conquest in AC OD

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 08:14 PM PST

Can't for the life in me beat one of these, it's not that I'm dying but rather the enemy ships always leave the battle boundaries.

Sad they still haven't fixed this.

    AC Odyssey Engraving DPS Question

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 01:21 PM PST

Hi all, I was wondering if the engravings you have on your weapon are accounted for when you look at it's DPS. For example, I am running Poseidon's Trident, and I have engraved +27% Damage with spears (this engraving is also on my boots), but I noticed my sword which has fire engravings and is of equal level has the same exact DPS.

    Thanks

In AC Odyssey the Melaina horse skin makes my horse take no fall damage, is this a glitch?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:21 AM PST

So I got the horse skin that was free that's called Melaina from the store and I noticed that when using the skin I was able to ride off absurdly high cliffs and stuff and just keep on riding my horse like nothing happened but then I tested the same height jump with the default skin and the horse died. Is this because the Melaina skin has wings or is it a glitch with the skin? What other cosmetics give an advantage?

    Caterina Sforza blighted Ezio?

AC Odyssey Heir of Memories questline - is that it?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 09:07 AM PST

Hey guys, I picked up the Odyssey vanilla game but on installing it hadalso bundled in the Lost Tales of Greece quests and the Heir of Memories questline. I've just completed all three but the ending of the Atlantis/HoM questline, once I've found the three symbols, is a bit ambiguous and suggests I'm not finished. It ends with Layla in present day saying she'll dive back in to the animus shortly. Is there anything else to do here, included with the base game? Or is it at this point I have to buy the full Atlantis DLC to continue?

Edit: Thanks for clarifying guys, much appreciated!!

Why does ACs animation after Unity look so ugly?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:21 PM PST

I get that the 90s Dark Souls-gameplay became all the new rage amongst the younger, edgy teenie generation of gamers, who hadn't experienced that shitty gameplay during the 90s and thought it was "challenging" when in reality it was just outdated, clunky shit, but... whatever man, to each their own. However, this game isn't even on par with that and it ditched ACs absolutely stunning perfectly balanced, motion-capped gameplay for this!? And reviewers love it !? what the fuck!? I bet Patrick Dessilets cries at night every time he sees what they've done to his beloved franchise...

Edit: I'm referring to the newer ACs and by that I mean Origins and Odyssey. The motions look clunky af. I'm ok with Ubisoft trying to innovate and I get that the gameplay was getting stale but instead of innovating they just cloned Dark Souls along with the clunky 4-direction movement and I absolutely hate spongy enemies, it is fucking gross.

    AC: Odyssey is definitely masterpiece

    Posted: 31 Jan 2020 03:27 AM PST

The RPG mechanic and loot system was well implemented so that you could completely focus on your playstyle. In addition, the leveling system is endless so that you can still keep leveling up your skills after the ability tree has been filled. The gameplay was kept as relaxing as possible. For example, collecting loots happen automatically with single button and you can climb freely to any mountain. Compared to RDR2, this game's gameplay doesn't feel too heavy and is accessible for every people, regardless of their gaming preferences. The world is massive and beautiful, I believe that no other game has such beautiful landscapes. So much variety, from volcanic areas to clean white beaches and turquoise water. The mercenary system is funny addition and can keep the things chaotic in the game world. The cult system was like a detective subquest which replaces the one in Unity in good way. The story was quite good and had some mysterical vibes in its plot. The sidequests were also very well crafted, my favorite side character is Diona that I definitely recommend to visit at some point. The modern world was kept as minimal as possible so that it doesn't interrupt much of your game flow. The main characters are well written and can be both hilarious and serious according to the events in the game. Odyssey also takes some piece from Black Flag by including naval battles that were enjoyful for most people. There is so much to do in Odyssey. The world is filled lots of activities so you always have something to do. The developers have added so much new content after the game's release so the post-game development is maybe the biggest I have seen for a single-player game. For example, lots of QoL changes like modifying armor to look like anything you want. Then there are also the Lost tale of Greece for free. Some OP combos were balances little bit to keep gameplay more fresh. Discovery tour is nice plus for anyone who loves to study more history of Ancient Greece. Furthermore, the DLCs add new beautiful playable worlds. I love this game. The game is simply perfect 10/10 and I don't really see a reason for hate-circlejerking it.
