After years of restriction to the franchise, I finally bought and completed my first ever AC game—Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Here are my thoughts.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:27 AM PST

After 369 hours in game I got all 93 achievements, completed all possible quests (excluding player-made ones), completed all map objectives, solved all ainigmata ostrakas, surpassed level 99, and acquired all the armor pieces and weapons I could without spending real money. Huzzah!

The following is the story of my restriction to the franchise and eventual purchase of Odyssey.

When I was around 12 years old, I had my first taste of the franchise with AC3. I was at a friends house and played for no more than 20 minutes before my mother told me to stop. At the time, she didn't want her 12 year old son playing a game called "Assassin's creed." I don't blame her; the games are violent.

However, even with such a small amount of gameplay, I was hooked on playing more. Unfortunately, the only gaming platforms I had were a PS2, a Wii, and a 2008 Macintosh desktop with no graphics card (lol n00b). So basically, RIP me. The Wii U came along and that was great. Smash bros and Xenoblade Chronicles X were my jam. But then, from the thick of darkness, LO AND BEHOLD ASSASSIN'S CREED BLAG FLAG! ON THE WII U?!??!?! The stars definitely aligned. With all the persuasive prowess I could muster, I asked my mom if I could buy the game. But alas, I received the big fat "no." It was the largest mental kick to the groin I experienced up to that point in my life.

Ok not actually but it REALLY sucked.

Several years passed and I eventually gave up on playing the games. I got into Dota 2, Overwatch, and Warframe, occasionally playing singleplayer games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Skyrim, and BOTW. I was perfectly content with my gaming situation. Later, during the middle of my first term of college, I saw an add saying, "Assassin's Creed Odyssey, out now." It was at that moment I was hit with a fat nostalgia bomb. Despite my remembrance of the glorious 20 minutes of AC3, I was hesitant to get the game. I was busy with college and content with the games I was already playing. I thought, "do I really need this game? Are AC games even that good?" I did some research and eventually found that the game was set in Ancient Greece.

Now, before discovering the game's setting, the supposed elements of the game were already appealing: A solid combat system, an open world, a beautiful OST, and a well designed and thought out environment. But here's the thing: I am Greek, my family is Greek, and I have lived in Greece. The moment I observed the game's setting, any hesitation toward buying the game vanished and immediately I whipped out the credit card and punched some numbers.

So began one of the most memorable gaming experiences of my life.

Personally, the first hours of a game are always the most enjoyable—especially in open world games. The feeling of knowing absolutely nothing and being cast into a world that is meant for you to explore without limitations is just the best. Also, strange as this may sound, being weak is one of my favorite parts of games. Starting off as a puny warrior and ascending all the way to godly levels of power is one of the most satisfying feelings for me. Transitioning from getting absolutely bodied by Talos the Stone Fist on Kephallonia to swimming up to mercenary ships, climbing up the side and annihilating everyone is THE BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD! In all seriousness, there were several elements that made this game magical for me.

Freedom: The freedom I felt with this game was unparalleled to anything I ever played (the only exceptions being Xenoblade Chronicles X and BOTW, and even that I'm debating). I truly felt as though I could go anywhere and do anything I wanted. In open world games freedom is a keystone element and one ACO handles very well.

Atmosphere/environment: I don't even know where to begin. The game's atmosphere and environment are simply immaculate. It's difficult pointing to anything in particular because it all meshes together to form one beautiful, interesting, and immersive world. Nature in both above-water and underwater settings greatly surprised me. The colors in each contrast beautifully, and everywhere I go felt like someplace new. This was one of the few games I've played where wandering through nature to get to locations wasn't just a commute, and often times I would intentionally wander around and soak in what I saw. The diversity of urban areas is also impressive. Similar to nature, the colors in urban areas contrasted effectively to set a particular mood. Settlements had good layouts and interesting structures. Everything from small farm houses to large temples and akropolis's aid in the wonderful atmosphere of the game. The last part of atmosphere I'd like to bring up is music and sound. The music in this game is genuinely quite good. Recognizable and pleasant sounds / songs were all over the game, many of which had an incredible impact on my in-game experience. The first time I heard the loud, deep pitched sound that indicates a nearby mercenary I jumped in my chair. Hundreds of hours later, every time I hear the horn I immediately use Ikaros to look around. Certain verses that occur while traversing the world make me very relaxed, and I've developed some favorites among them. Every time I synchronized, I would lean far back in my chair, mesmerized by the view and almost hypnotized by the tunes. The accumulation of the small things like this raise the game above many others.

NPCs: Not once in my playthrough did I feel as though an NPC was unnecessary. Every NPC in the game belongs there. You see fathers teaching their children sparring techniques, men wrestling, several citizens playing that bizarre soccer/hockey game with small wooden hockey sticks, people walking slowly while hanging their head, soldiers and mercenaries running through streets, and ordinary townsfolk making conversation... in Greek! The large variety of behavior in NPCs helps bring the world to life and immerse the player. If you kill civilians in a street, many citizens will run, some will hide, but a small handful will pick up weapons and take matters into their own hands (unless you're in Sparta in which case every citizen decides to fight). The range of behaviors like this took the game to the next level. I also want to briefly mention the more familiar NPCs, like Sokrates, Barnabas, family members, etc. I really like all these characters but am only attached to a few. The majority of important NPCs have well made characters; I just like some more than others.

Combat/Stealth: The combat system in Odyssey is very clean and well polished. As mentioned above, I love the progression of power from a general mercenary to a demigod. The opportunity to use different builds and tactics is an important combat feature in RPGs and one this game handles well. Ocean warfare is also really cool and could honestly be a game in and of itself.

One of my favorite moments in the game is when you leave Kephallonia and you see the game title. I thought, "Wait, I just played for over 24 hours and I just now finish the introduction?" Another one of my favorite elements of the game was recognizing locations in-game that I've been to in person. Having lived in Greece, there were many locations with which I was familiar, and exploring them in game was a very unique experience.

TLDR: This game is phenomenal. The anticipation of finally playing an Assassin's Creed game was overwhelming, and this game surpassed anything I hoped for.

Now that I'm done with Odyssey and its DLC, I'm on my way to Origins to pickup where I was left off!

The accents in odyssey are bad

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:13 PM PST

in no other game AC have i noticed the accent break through the acting so prominantly. I can hear the north american accents of the actors. More to the point, sometimes the actors sound russian, which is hillarious. It may be something about the greek language that is hard to imitate or hard to hide your natural accent behind it, who knows, im just saying its bad.

The potential for more Assassin's Creed games on the Nintendo Switch

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:31 AM PST

Now that Black Flag and Rogue have been released for the Switch in the form of the Rebel Collection, what are the chances of Unity and Syndicate coming to the Switch, either individually or part of a third Switch collection? Since they are the first Assassin's Creed games to be solely on the current generation of Xbox and Playstation consoles, are they too demanding for the Switch's hardware?

The Arena in Ac odyssey is surprisingly a big downgrade from AC Origins

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 04:41 AM PST

So i just fought in the arena for the first time, and i gotta say, i'm not impressed, the way each arena champion is presented is just bad, unlike origins which displayed a little cutscene to show you just how dangerous they are, AND they had their own fighting style, the ones in odyssey just feel like regular enemies (Disclaimer: i haven't progressed much through the arena but these are just my first impressions) also the whole arena feels like a fight club more than an actual arena, i expected something more grand and beautiful, but nope, fighters in the arena just feel like regular enemies, nothing special really. this was just my opinion and thank you for reading :)

The Viking Age setting is my dream come true.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:53 AM PST

I remember reading a discussion one to two years ago about how perfect a game set during the Viking Age would be. It made perfect sense with the naval system that has been perfected since Assassin's Creed 3. The seamless transition from sea to land, or ship to ship combat, all of it fits like a glove for the Viking Age. The seamless landing of viking longships on English shores with a raiding party just sounds so epic to me. My mind is racing thinking of all the major battles of the early Viking age, and whether they'll include Ragnar Lothbrok, the Norse gods, or the Great Heathen Army.

I'm on a quest to find out who made the first prediction about this. Whoever they are I can only imagine how excited they are. When I first read about the Vikings suggestion (well before these leaks) I knew it would be an awesome place to have as an AC game location. As a giant nerd for Viking history and the Vikings TV series, the idea of having a Viking shield and Carolingian sword (or going as a berserker with a vicious double-bladed axe), locked in shield walls or single combat makes me tremble with excitement. My only wish would be that they tone down the magical abilities and just keep the combat gritty and realistic like the roots of Assassin's Creed.

Some of you may not remember this, but Assassin's Creed Rogue had tons of easter eggs for vikings. The Templar Otso Berg found out he had a Viking ancestor who was a part of the raid on Lindisfarne in 793. I don't know if Ubisoft was actually thinking that far ahead in the production process, but it would be absolutely insane if they planned this out all the way back then. I know they have been going with a focus on mythology since Origins and Odyssey, so it makes perfect sense if they do Norse mythology next. AC: Ragnarok is going to revitalize Assassin's Creed for me.

I never would have guessed when I first played AC: Rogue that the neat little stories about Vikings could have been a nod (intentional or otherwise) towards a future game built on a new engine with beautiful graphics, setting, new combat and story. The Viking Age is my dream come true for an Assassin's Creed setting. This is what I have waited so long to have from an AC game. Thank you so much Ubisoft. I absolutely cannot wait to roam Scandinavia, England, and the Norwegian/North Sea in the Early Middle Ages.

Assassins creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:07 PM PST

How did you all feel about this DLC. I haven't researched really any fan feedback but I really love it!!! Outside of some (who am I kidding quite a lot actually) of what seems to be audio bugs, or just extremely awkward conversation, the story itself if great! I feel like it is a great "coming of age" story for Alexios/Kassandra and, especially in the third act, gives real purpose and meaning to the whole story wrapping it up very nicely

    Assassin's Creed Syndicate unconscious bobby.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 09:47 AM PST

I forgot where it is, but if you look somewhere on the map near the edge of the map, in an empty alleyway parallel to a street, there's this cop lying on the floor with a glowing yellow aura as though you're able to kill him. However, when you aim at it, it can't be shot. You can't kill it. The game ignores it. Anybody know what this is?

Need some help with AC1 combat

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:22 PM PST

I am stuck on the sequence where u have to assassinate robert through fighting him with other ten men. Ive tried so many times(yes 3 hour passed already) so i went on youtube searching for tutorials and walkthroughs. However, this fighting sequence in their walkthrough the soldiers just form a circle and let Altair 1v1 one of the soldiers, which is super easy, even without hp dropping. BUT IN MY GAME they attack at the SAME time, i cannot defend myself during fight(kinda like combat in odyssey, but i dont have fancy aoe abilities or more weapon choices). And if i did, my attack speed wont catch up and blocked/dragged by one of the soldiers. Did ubisoft change the combat settings these years? Have you guys ever been through this i found this annoying and now i start to hate this game. Btw I do have exprerience of AC combat... Ive played AC2 and Odyssey... and i gotta say AC2 combat is waaaay easy compare to this...

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 07:49 PM PST

So pretty much I went to go kill Talos, I got the XP and the loot to prove it but he won't die...? Like he's just laying on the ground, blood covering him, and it just doesn't say defeated in the mercenaries tab. Anyone else experience this? Anyway to fix it?

Is this possible after how Syndicate ended? [Spoiler]

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:56 AM PST

I finished Syndicate a while ago and I was thinking about the ending. I was going to spoiler the text, but the title should have been enough to not click lmao.

So, at the end the templar doctor/scientist, Alvaro, reveals with the shroud he's going to rebuild the body of an Isu (for Juno to be more precise). I know in the comics he manages to get her a body growing (and working) thanks to one key ingredient, Elijah. Desmond's son. Do you think that he could be brought into the series in the future?

Also my original question was about regenerating Desmond's body, but I realised he'd need his concious up in some kind of "cloud" to be put into it.. although an animus could store his last known consciousness too right?

I have thoroughly confused myself now. 🤔

The upcoming audio drama Assassin's Creed Gold should be a live action series instead

    Posted: 06 Dec 2019 05:42 PM PST

Nothing against audio dramas but.. Just look at the cast of Gold. It's p a c k e d. Riz Ahmed. Anthony Head. Danny Wallace. Tamara Lawrence.

A female protagonist also, finally. More modern day focus.

I get live action tv series are expensive but looking at that cast and the thematic relevance of the philosophies or AC, it seems like a logical thing to adapt AC into TV and have success with it. The movie largely failed because the universe is too big, lore wise, for a two hour movie.

I think it would also be easier to explore the themes of AC in a tv series, slow, methodical approaches to both order purposes, absent of the concerns of a video game, focusing instead just on story.
