Announcing the 2019 Assassin's Creed Marathon!

    Posted: 12 Sep 2019 09:02 AM PDT

The Assassin's Creed Marathon is back!

Hello again, Assassins! We're glad to announce that the annual Assassin's Creed Marathon is back for a sixth time. This means it's our five-year anniversary doing this.
The 2019 Assassin's Creed Marathon will begin on October 10th. Over the course of 72 days, we will replay many of the games in the Assassin's Creed series, roughly one sequence at a time, leading up to December 21st, Assassin's Creed Day!
To make the Marathon happen in this shorter than usual time span, the list of games to be played was trimmed down slightly, but also expanded with requests from the last few years.

NEW HERE? HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

As always, a little paragraph for those who are unfamiliar. The Assassin's Creed Marathon is a yearly event on r/AssassinsCreed where the community gets together to replay games in the Assassin's Creed series, one sequence a day (sorta). We start on October 10th, with the first Memory Blocks of the first Assassin's Creed, and 72 days later, we will have replayed all of the games up through Rogue (and some DLCs), just in time for Assassin's Creed Day!

A discussion thread is posted every day, including fan art, live streams, wallpapers and more! Here's a short list of things you can expect from this year's Assassin's Creed Marathon:

    DISCUSSION

Once you've played the sequence of that particular day, you can jump into discussions on Reddit and share your thoughts and experiences. Like last year, discussions during the 2019 Marathon will be entirely open to the players, so you can freely give your thoughts on every sequence and engage in conversation with others.

As ALWAYS, active and loyal participants of this year's Marathon will be eligible for an official giveaway, with a chance to win some cool Assassin's Creed swagger. We are still working out the specifics of the giveaway, and all will be revealed at a later time.

    LIVE STREAMS AND VIDEOS

Unable to play certain sequences? No problem! Every day there will be a team of AC Marathon live streamers broadcasting their playthroughs at different times, so you'll always be up to speed. Streamers who prefer to play and record ahead of time will have links to their pre-recorded sequences featured as well.

Interested in becoming a streamer? We've made it easier than ever to join the team as a streamer. Join the Assassin's Creed Marathon Discord Server and become a part of the Marathon team! Here's some stuff to keep in mind:

    • Schedule. There isn't a specific timetable which you have to follow! You just let us know the days that you will be able to live stream and at what time (in EST) your stream will begin.
    • Streaming daily is not required. The list of streamers will be changing daily based on streamers' availability, so you can tell us the exact days on which you will be streaming!
    • Play/record ahead of time. If your schedule isn't ideal for live stream, you can record your playthroughs ahead of time and we will feature the links to your recordings instead.
    • Commentating is recommended. If you are able to add your commentary over your stream/video, it would be advised, as it would be more interesting for viewers to watch and it will create opportunities for interaction with the chat.

    SCHEDULE

As we've mentioned, the 2019 Assassin's Creed Marathon starts on October 10th, and this is the schedule we will be following:

    October 10th - Assassin's Creed
    October 15th - Assassin's Creed II
    October 27th - Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
    November 5th - Assassin's Creed: Revelations
    November 13th - Assassin's Creed III
November 23rd - Assassin's Creed III: The Tyranny of King Washington
    November 26th - Assassin's Creed III: Liberation
December 2nd - Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
December 13th - Assassin's Creed IV: Freedom Cry
    December 15th - Assassin's Creed Rogue
    December 21st - Assassin's Creed Day

Some days and sequences have been altered and/or merged for a better experience. To view the full schedule and division of days, visit the 2019 Schedule spreadsheet.

    SEE YOU ON OCTOBER 10th!

We look forward to you guys participating in this year's Marathon. We hope to see both familiar faces and new players!

If you have any questions, feel free to let us know in the comments and we will be sure to answer them.

The strange alienation of playing AC3 as a non-American

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 02:38 PM PDT

Playing AC3 really makes you realise how much this series is made with the assumption that the player is American. With every other game, settings and events and characters are explained in depth, there's a lot of exposition around it all. The historical figures you meet are the kind of ones that EVERYONE has heard of - Charles Dickens, Leonardo Da Vinci, Napoleon, Blackbeard, etc. And when they're not big names, the games go to great length to explain them.

AC3 is kind of the exception to this rule. Just like the other games, it's made with an American player in mind. But because it's set in the US, in a time period Americans are raised to know a lot about, and features historical figures which are familiar to Americans, it never really explains anything. It just kind of acts like you should really know why these events are important, or who these people are - even the obscure ones. But unless a Non-American has a specific interest in US history, all but the most famous events and figures are going to go over their head (as they did with mine when I first played this game at the ripe age of 14). Most non-Americans will know a small handful of the main names like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, and that's probably it. They won't have heard of things like the Stamp Tax, or even a lot of the battles.

So when the game introduces someone like Paul Revere or Samuel Adams, you can tell it's treating this like a big deal, like it's a mic drop moment or something, but since you have no clue who the fuck these guys are, you really just feel kind of left out. Because to you, this is just some guy, but you can tell that the game is expecting you to understand. It's easy to play through events like the Boston Massacre or Bunker Hill without realising that they even happened in real life, let alone that they were significant, because the game just expects you to know that, so it never does anything to highlight it. Even the signing of the Declaration of Independence falls completely flat unless you know about the event and the people involved. This is the only game where I've felt like I needed to read the Database entries just to understand the context that the game wasn't giving me, because it expected me to already know it. And SO MUCH of this game's worldbuilding is like this. Half of the characters and most of the events lose their significance if you don't have prior knowledge of them. Where AC2's goal was 'Let us teach you about Italian history', AC3's is 'Let us show you the nuances and complexities that your school education of US history never covered'. The end result is a strange sense of alienation which I haven't felt with any of the other games.

I'm curious if anyone else had this feeling, and whether this is exclusive to AC3 (being the only game set in the US), or whether people felt a bit alienated by other games in the series.

[SPOILERS] What I love about Assassin’s Creed

    Posted: 20 Sep 2019 12:01 AM PDT

In 2008 I had saved up $200 and used it to buy myself an Xbox 360 off Craigslist. Fortunately, the seller was also giving away 4 games with it. While my intention was to play Halo 3, the seller wasn't throwing that in with the Xbox, instead, including a title I never heard of, Assassin's Creed. While I was interested in the other games included, which would have to hold me off until I had $30 for Halo, curiosity got the best of me, and the first game I put into the Xbox was this Assassin's Creed.

The initial loading screen was interesting. The DNA motifs across the white background while opening to church bells as we get to see Altair. There was save data already since I didn't yet realize I had to set up a new profile (being used to that being done in-game on the og Xbox and GameCube), so I started a new game and was greeted by a shaking camera and prostitutes surrounding me. I nearly put it down until the voices began. Curious I played on for a moment before the white light and Desmond shooting up "Bastards!".

That is what hooked me on Assassin's Creed. What I thought would be like Prince of Persia turned into a larger sci-fi adventure across time. I loved it. The modern day was always the most interesting part for me, being the glue to the series. What kept me interested was the mystery behind it all. Who was Abstergo really? What is the end of the world Minerva spoke of? Who were those who came before? Why is Desmond's son important? Who's the mother? Who's Eve? Why did Desmond kill Lucy? What do all the symbols mean?

After finishing AC1 the first time, I immediately restarted it on a new profile. I wanted to replay the story. See what I missed. I joined the Ubi forums to discuss the ending, and what all the symbols could mean, working with other community members to decide everything. AC became my first real video game community and I loved everything about it.

Even without the MD, I loved replaying the first few games on repeat, and still make time to replay them at least once a year. The writing was pretty good, and over the years, I've only become fonder of games like AC1 that, despite the slower pace and repetitiveness, have amazing writing. The unique blend of philosophy and politics, the subtlety of character growth and real dimensions in some games is outstanding, and make AC1 a joy to replay. Even as the series progressed and began to lose some of the more mature plots, the games and writing are just fun. Like Cesare might be a fairly black and white bad guy and not be 100% historically accurate, it was fun to work with Machiavelli and dismantle the corrupt papal influence and toss Cesare off the ramparts.

That's really because AC is so unique. Many games hold similar gameplay pillars of stealth, combat, and movement, but AC took the basic formula and enhanced it. You use social stealth to be a blade in the crowd, parkour to leap across buildings and balconies over the heads of civilians, and combat in those times where you just want to be a stylish badass and not care about 100% sync. It's a truly unique blend of gameplay elements and stories/locations. What other game series allows you to parkour over the rooftops of Venice and learn to kill well from Leonardo Da Vinci? Or be a Caribbean Pirate looking for a cause while fighting alongside Blackbeard?

The historical tourism and uniqueness were always a huge draw leading to AC3 and 4 selling 14 million units because you get to fight in the American Revolution alongside George Washington or clearing decks with Charles Vane and Edward Thatch. It wasn't just the characters that sold the experience, but the setting too, allowing you to witness pivotal moments. "History is our playground".

AC has begun to stray away from this, though. Marketable characters are becoming more important important it seems, and while the settings were unique, Odyssey worryingly focused more on mythology than history, creating a Greece that feels fantastical rather than grounded in historical authenticity. The gameplay has been reduced down to play more like other games like the Witcher 3. A shame, as it hurts the core gameplay and loop as I've discussed before. Writing has continually gone downhill in most fans opinions, and even better games like Origins still suffer from bad pacing. The harder-hitting philosophical discussions are nearly gone too, with their main location (animus confession rooms) being removed from Odyssey as well. Not even mystery remains, having settled the most interesting plots in comics, forgetting others exist, and building up a wildly inconsistent main character with no clear plan on her journey, leading her to crack a joke about crippling a man while holding the body of a friend she killed in cold blood that she largely ignored until that point.

Assassin's Creed seems to be a shadow of its former self these days, much to the chagrin of many older fans such as myself. Because I know that some Ubisoft employees do read this reddit some times, I beg to you, please let the next game fulfill the desire for a real Assassin's Creed again, even if you largely cater to the new fans.

I know a common sentiment in the community currently is that if the old fans don't like the new AC, we should move to a new franchise. While I don't wish to dwell on this long so as to not anger the mods, I feel it's appropriate to address this. There are no other Assassin's Creeds besides what Ubisoft gives us. No other series has captured the gameplay, story, or setting elements as AC has. For those of us left of the diehard fans of the old series, leaving doesn't feel like an option. So instead we discuss on forums that Ubi does read our current displeasures as feedback and iterate accordingly in the future. I'd also like you to ask yourself how you'd feel if your favorite franchise changed genres and gameplay to cater to a new audience?

"Laa shay'a waqi'un moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine". Using the phrase in a real life perspective.

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 02:08 AM PDT

This phrase, "nothing is true, everything is permitted" is more than just a good franchise tag line. It's a great way to view life.

While it could be viewed at face value, leading people to believe they can do whatever they want with no repercussions, the phrase means something a lot more.

To say nothing is true means that nothing is absolute. There is no single, linear path in life and that there are a thousand possibilities. You may think something in the future or present may be set to have happened, or you are destined to lead a certain life, but there is always a chance, no matter how small the percentage, that it can be changed. Nothing is true.

Everything is permitted does not mean we can run around stealing, robbing, hurting others etc with no backlash. To say everything is permitted is to acknowledge that you can do whatever you want in life, but you yourself must be ready to face the consequences of your actions. You must own everything that you do and the result will be yours alone. The phrase asks us to think of our actions deeply and ask ourselves if we are truly ready to deal with the outcome. Everything is permitted.

I know this is touched upon in the games a lot, but I wanted to express how the phrase, once adapted to a life outside of the fiction of the franchise, makes me view life in a new perspective.

Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

What does the phrase mean to you?

So I just finished the Atlantis Dlc and the cringe was unbearable (SPOILERS)

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 09:33 PM PDT

At the end of the Dlc in the present when we are with Layla and then she looked at the camera and said, I have some people to say goodbye to, damn it was so cringy, did they really wanted to pull the Geralt breaking the fourth wall trick with Layla, I mean come on Ubi, most of us don't like her, and now you pretend to feel like she is as cool as Geralt, nope, I hope that if the rumors are true and we have a Vikings game, we play as Otso in the present day, even on a wheelchair he's way cooler than Layla. (btw why the hell did they make the dumb decision of doing that to Otso!!)

You think there is still a chance of a game in Babylon with Alexander the great??

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 09:47 PM PDT

It would be super epic to see that setting, and the architecture would be very different, colorful and amazing, Babylon was one of the most beautiful cities in the ancient world, and Alexander is one of the most important person who ever lived. And of course it would connect AC Odyssey with Origins, it would be perfect, if Assassins Creed is really going to go to the dark ages in the next game I think they wasted two amazing ancient settings, Babylon and the Roman empire.

Alexander the Great linked to the Cult of Kosmos

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 05:12 PM PDT

So, in my World History class, we finished the Greek History unit, and then it dawned on me. Alexander the Great's early years would have lined up with the Cult's goals. For those unfamiliar with Greek History, Odyssey takes place in the Peloponnesian War. Sparta won that war, defeating Athens, but at a price, the whole Greek Region was weakened because of it. Alexander the Great used this to conquer/unify Greece. The Cult could have easily been working towards this, and I think that this could be a potential intention from early in development of Odyssey, but was scrapped for unknown reasons by Ubisoft, what do you guys think

    Starting the series with Odyssey?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 05:07 PM PDT

Recently a friend gifted me keys for Odyssey and Origins. Problem is, i haven't played an AC game since like 3 at the latest and the only thing i can actually remember is jumping into hay piles and rebuilding a town once?

So i'm wondering how is the experience for new/returning players dropping in on these latest games? I'm worried if not being knowledgeable about and invested in the continuity could badly hollow the experience. I could start with Origins if that would be better, but the greater RPG focus in Odyssey appeals to me.

I made a complete playlist on Spotify with every game's soundtrack

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 02:18 AM PDT

As the title says, every track available on Spotify (Minus the shanties) is in this playlist. It also includes the DLCs', for a total of over 22 hours.

I really wanted to add Bloodlines and Chronicles' soundtracks but they seem to be unavailable, not here at least! That's why I made it collaborative, feel free to add more if you want, obviously if it belongs to the series haha

    Enjoy! :)

What other animal/bird can role in place of Senu and Ikaros in future AC games?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 03:37 AM PDT

Till we seen both are eagles, which helps protoganist to study the surrounding, track enemies and collectibles

In odyssey, we seen where Layla loves to pet monkeys where they're common in India, but there's land animals and they can climb trees and can distract or attack the enemies, what else you can imagine as pet animal to feature in future AC games?

The Audio of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Episode 3 - Character sound

I really hope they will make the guild system again but more fleshed out

    Posted: 19 Sep 2019 03:38 PM PDT

I just had a discussion with my friends and just wanted to share my thoughts. Am a bit drunk and on mobile so sorry for any mistakes. To me the absolute best part of Brotherhood and Revelation was, that you were building up the guild. I am imagining the next generation of it using some kind of nemesis system, where you habe your assassins and the templar agents in a constant battle. You build up your bases and level up the assassins so that you slowly drive the templars out. The Assassins could recruit others to join the cause and act autonomously as long as you don't give them a mission. All of this would happen in real time and not like in mordor where time only moves every time you wait. It should be of a kind, where it is not neccessary to develope the guild to have fun with the story but there should be an incentive to build it up at least a bit. Maybe some kind of patrols on the streets (disguised of course) which come to your aid if you want it. Like this the assassins wouldn't have to misteriously appear in haystacks but they just come from wherever they are standing. Thnak you for listening to my ted talk
