Unity’s parkour isn’t as good as everyone says

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:23 PM PDT

I haven't seen many people here say this; most people praise it for being "smooth" and looking great and feeling good.

But my experience has been completely different.

I haven't been playing too long, but it just feels terrible, even compared to 4's which is also not the best, at least you know about what you're going to do in 4, where in unity nothing is consistent

Sometimes, you need to hold free run up to start climbing, but other times, you don't. Sometimes you need to hold it to continue going up a tower, but other times you just leap up.

The jumping is painfully inconsistent and the animations are the same. Why am I able to make some of these jumps? Fuck if I know, my character just gets propelled forward at the speed of light when I want to jump to something far. Sometimes you hop a foot forward, sometimes 10 feet.

The direction you move is based on the camera, but only sometimes. If my camera is tilted to the right, and I'm holding up, the character will climb up and to the right, despite me only holding up. Sometimes, holding up will actually make you go up. It's not consistent. Similarly to this, if I'm climbing up something the wrong way and move the opposite way to compensate, you sometimes randomly leap to the closest thing.

The animations are baffling. Why do I swing my feel up a steep roof instead of just finishing climbing up? It's certainly slower, and you're locked into the animation.

Other random problems: you can't back eject if you hold the button, even if you're sitting still, you need to tap, and even then it only works half the time.

Maybe it's because I haven't played with it enough, but I just don't get how anyone can find this remotely satisfying. Half the time I'm running on a roof I end up gliding from chimney to chimney because the games jump is so inconsistent it just pushes you to whatever it decides at the moment you should reach, it's terrible, and worse, it's inconsistent.

Please someone explain why you enjoy it so much, because it's just painful to me, it makes me want to stop playing when I'm trying to climb on a light fixture and end up swinging off it because the game is inconsistent.

Can Valhalla return the "true Assassin's Creed" Flavor once more?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 11:35 PM PDT

I think the biggest thing long time AC fans are looking forward in Valhalla is whether it can deliver on the iconic Assassin's Creed spirit that (seemingly) got a lot distorted in Ubisoft's RPG overdose on the linear, stealth experience the series was known for. Yes, Valhalla is also an Action RPG first and foremost - but the team at Ubisoft are bringing some classic tropes of the series back, like the return of Social Stealth - and are promising a more dedicated handling of the series AC lore. We did get to see a lot of AC Valhalla footage in the Ubisoft Forward event - along with the numerous subsequent interviews of developers and various hands-on impressions of many players. So, what do you people think, based on all the things we saw, does Assassin's Creed Valhalla shaping up to be the return home formula for the series, or is it treading the same path as its (in)famous predecessor Odyssey?

Do you want the ending credits back in Valhalla??

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 07:54 PM PDT

As far as I know, AC Origins and AC Odyssey didn't have ending credits and I don't know the reason why. I really missed having an ending credit followed by a beautiful soundtrack or song, it gives a closure or something like that. I know AC games are known for long ending credits that it became a meme or so and I find those funny because I can relate.

I didn't like the way the character just stand there and levelling up and stuff after the game has 'ended'. I really hope they bring the ending credits back and maybe just make them creative or tolerable to watch like good soundtrack plus scenery in the game, or maybe something like picture or flashback of your journey or maybe, something like you control your character then just walk around and stuff, or etc.

    My Favorite Moment in Odyssey

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 05:30 AM PDT

I've been finally working on finishing this game. Ran into this quest in Messara, Flowers For the Dead, and it left me with a lot to think about.

For those that don't know and don't mind spoilers, the quest sees you running into a dying old man who has lost his wife. He regrets not showing her the view from the summit of Mt Ida, and asks you to pick a red flower so that he can take it with him to hades in the afterlife, so that he may give it to her. Sadly, upon returning you find him dead with his daughter lamenting his loss.

It was a short and simple quest, yet profound and worthwhile. It reminded me that it's easy to lose sight of the things we want to do, the people who are important and the memories we need to work for to create. I took a break after the quest to show my affection towards my girlfriend, as shes someone worth working for.

What is a moment in Assassin's Creed (or furthermore any game) that has left a marked impact on you?

The writing in AC Odyssey was embarrassing, I really hope AC Valhalla is better here

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 09:57 PM PDT

AC Odyssey came out in the same year as RDR2, GoW, Kingdom Come deliverance and Spider-Man and had an atrocious story and shitty voice acting/dialogue compared to all of them.

And hell no need to compare it to them, just compare it with previous AC games like the Ezio Trilogy, Black Flag or even Origins (Bayek was at least well done, the story was messy)

How excited are you guys for the Valhalla game

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 08:07 AM PDT

Personally I'm pretty excited. I've played all of them and have loved them all to a degree. I feel like they were on the right track with origins. But with odyssey, though gameplay was pretty good, I feel the story strayed away from the traditional lore. With Valhalla I have high hopes. The demo looked pretty good even though it needs a bit of polish. I am a little worried that it will suffer due to the release date being so close to cyberpunk. Just wanted to hear u guys' opinion on the game

Question: can I skip Assassins Creed Unity?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:18 PM PDT

So since the announcement of Valhalla, I've been 100 percenting most of the past games. Sadly had to start with Black Flag (good game) due to not having my old copies of the other games. I've finally made it to Unity but after putting 5 hours into the game I remembered how much I hate this game. So I was curious if I can just skip the game, the only problem is I don't really remember the story beside the stupid romance problems. I know that it's my choice, but is there anything story wise I'd miss out on. I remember the story to most of the others but this one just got wiped from my memory.

Please just chill and wait for the game to come out

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 12:25 AM PDT

You haven't played the game. You likely haven't seen more than an hour or 2 of gameplay. Just chill until the game comes out in november. Have discussions and debates but there is no point to hate on a game that wont come out for several months (and will receive updates after that). When the game comes out and you experience it then go ahead and hate if you dont like it. Hating on it now just creates arguments and fosters negativity.

What's your favourite part of the franchise?

    Posted: 20 Jul 2020 12:11 AM PDT

For me its still the Ezio Trilogy. I'm still more invested in Ezio than any other AC protagonist (his arc from naive womanizer to experienced Assassin is great) and I really loved the setting, focus on Assassins vs Templars and soundtrack of those games.

The Kenway Era did come close (AC3+BF are great) but Rogue was kind of weak. After that its been mostly medicore games in my opinion that either waste all their potential (Unity, Syndicate) or don't even feel like they are part of the franchise (origins, Odyssey)

Literally no one: ... Me: Arno is a character who I enjoy because he’s unlikable (spoilers)

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:37 PM PDT

I don't have any friends who've played Unity, so this is to get the thought out of my head. TL;DR at the bottom.

One thing that intrigued me about Arno's motives is his selfishness. His fixation on redemption/Elise leads him to do what he wants, and walk a fine line with the Brotherhood (until exile, which I agreed with). He's serious and static. But blind love/revenge makes people completely whack. I see him as Elise's puppet, but because his rose tinted glasses are so strong, of course he didn't see it. Which was slightly infuriating, but also I've done similar things in my own life that also resulted in consequences. Which leads to the fact I really liked the sequence of his exile in Versailles.

However, underneath all the revenge craze, I was pleasantly surprised at the little dialogue moments which highlighted the humor that was so prominent in the beginning. What instantly comes to mind is when they show up at the apothecary, and when he walks away from the grounded air balloon. Those scenes and his musings was just enough of his awkward humor to keep me from completely hating his character.

I was ecstatic that his less tense personality somewhat returned in Dead Kings. Leon was a nice addition; independent enough to not drive Arno (and myself) crazy and a reminder that wallowing in one's own misery all the time is just idiotic. For lack of a better word.

In conclusion, I think the fact that Arno's story and his character are quite flawed give him that added human aspect. It might've been writing mistake to not give him external overarching goals (Edward comes to mind,) but I am okay with that. Because life really is just a cycle of damned if we do, and damned if we don't.

TL;DR: Arno is a selfish character that I liked because he's not a standard pristine protagonist.

Does anyone know if Valhalla features a movement slider option for kb/m users ?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 03:36 PM PDT

    Mainly to lurking DEVS.

Q: Does Valhalla feature a movement speed adjuster setting like Odyssey's exploration mode ?

I really like slow-walking and it really gives players the opportunity to pay attention to details they wouldnt otherwise.

I want to share something with you regarding this request of mine, Imagine cruising slowly in the rivers of england while hearing the stories of your raiders or listening to your bard, taking in the sight OR walking/riding in a city(except distrust areas) seeing, hearing, feeling the world around you..

I own a bad controller which most games dont even detect and as a kb/m user who likes to slow-walk but doesnt want to give away the smooth camera and combat control i believe this would make a good addition to Valhalla for people like me to enjoy it.

How were you introduced to the series? What's your story?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 06:42 AM PDT

For me, I remember watching my cousin play AC1 probably 12 or so years ago, just free roaming Jerusalem and he even let me play some. I was enthralled by the simple idea of climbing buildings in an ancient city and being able to go around stabbing guards with the hidden blade (ethics aside lol). I was enamored with the game and resented that I couldn't have it myself (didn't have a new enough console at the time and wasn't allowed to own M-rated games, I was like ten at the time lol).

A couple years later I was again watching my cousin play through the beginning of AC2. This time I was even more intrigued. Renaissance Italy? A new, charismatic protagonist? It wasn't long before I finally got the game for myself and played through, and of course had the time of my life. 2 remains my favorite game of all time to this day. Ironically, by this point it was late 2011 and Revelations was being promoted HEAVILY. I wanted to play the shiny new AC so badly that I skipped over Brotherhood entirely and just read a synopsis or something. (Big mistake, I know, I was a stupid 13-year-old at the time who didn't understand or appreciate long-form storytelling.) Anyway, Revelations took my breath away and I immediately went back and played Brotherhood right after. And like that, the Ezio trilogy changed my life. The story, the characters, the modern day, everything to do with the Ones Who Came Before and the ancient conspiracy stuff, the animus, all of it.

Needless to say when I saw the first trailer for AC3 my hype levels exceeded their maximum. I had literally just taken a US history class, and the series that I had just come to love was now visiting it in what was marketed, at the time, as the epic conclusion to the series. Basically, it felt like this game was being tailor-made just for me. Although the game was controversial in the fanbase, I loved it and still do.

Black Flag really felt like too much of a departure for me and I was disappointed by the reveal. I never cared all that much for pirates to begin with, and it felt like that was all Ubi was going for. Although today I appreciate the game for what it was, and it's definitely fun, I still point back to it as the beginning of when Ubi shifted their priority from pleasing fans to pleasing the mainstream. And that trend is what led us to Odyssey. I loved Unity as it was a return to the old form while also making the gameplay more fluid than ever. Syndicate was more of the same but less inspired. I kinda hated Origins at first, but after finishing it I could say that Bayek alone justifies the game's existence, and he is my second favorite main protagonist behind Ezio. Odyssey... well... let's just not get into it. The topic has been covered enough on this sub, but I'll just say I do not approve of the direction that game took the series.

Looking ahead to Valhalla, I still don't know what to feel. In some ways, I feel cautiously optimistic based on what has been said in interviews about putting deliberate effort into making it an actual AC. At the same time, the gameplay and overall tone shown last week looked way too frighteningly close to Odyssey for me. I will still wait and see, as I know the early marketing tends to try and appease the mainstream first, with hardcore fans being a lower priority. Only time will tell.

Regarding the Raider Outfit in Assassin's Creed® Unity: Dead Kings

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 10:00 AM PDT

First of all, I would like to apologize if people already knew about this, I tried to look it up but didn't really find any results similar to what I found out while playing.

Ever since the Dead Kings dlc came out, people were slightly upset that you couldn't start with the outfit presented in the trailer and the only way to acquire it would be to open an initiate chest in some catacombs that would become available during the 5th memory, towards the end of said dlc.

After my 100% Unity run, I started Dead Kings and while doing some of the newly unlocked side stuff after the 2nd memory, I stumbled upon a Story of Franciade called "A Royal Hide" which took me through the same catacombs that you would first set foot in during the 5th memory, thus allowing me to unlock the Raider Outfit a bit sooner. Just wanted to leave this here in case somebody new to the franchise decides to start Dead Kings or one of you might do another playthrough.

TLDR: You can acquire the Raider Outfit for Arno as soon as you complete the 2nd memory by starting the side mission "A Royal Hide".

Ubisoft should add achievements for AC I, II and Brotherhood on PC.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:56 PM PDT

I've been feeling nostalgic about these games and with the recent sale i decided to purchase the Ezio Collection on Uplay - unfortunately, for my surprise, i realized that there's no achievements in AC II and Brotherhood. I can't speak for the majority of the players, but i imagine that achievements in those games can be a major fun factor for some. Since there are so many collectables and side events to do, achievements can be a good way to incourage players to complete them and, therefore, they create a reason to revisit older titles in the franchise.
